Congrats Kittybird! Your hair looks amazing :)

Warning: incoming wall of text >_<

I went to the hairdresser today, and I really need to vent... I feel like I've been bottling it up all day, because I went with a close friend who was really excited to go together and have a girls' day out (we both have 2 year olds and don't get out much). She was really, really happy with her hair and had a great time, and I couldn't let myself be a downer for her.

I should say straight off that this is not an 'I asked for a half inch off and ended up with a BOB!' horror story - they did exactly what I wanted, and it looks good... an inch off, and three subtle blue streaks put in the side for fun. But the girl who cut my hair (who was an 18 year old trainee) had clearly never, ever had to deal with hair that was as long and as fine as mine before and EVERYTHING SHE DID WAS SO PAINFUL. I find it really hard to be confrontational, ever, I always try to just grin and bear it - I don't know why, I should have said something, but I could only bring myself to be super-subtle: "ah, I haven't been to the hairdresser for so long, I guess my scalp just isn't used to it!", "hmm I would probably just use a comb, those brushes are really hard to get through my hair", "ooh sorry yes my hair tangles pretty easily"... that is Jomo speak for "OH MY GOD I AM DYING".

She was constantly pulling my hair from the ends in sharp motions while she applied the colour, and when she washed it I felt like she had gripped all my hair in both hands and was just wrenching at it. Combing was worse; even though she did use a wide-toothed comb, she started combing really high up and it just went rrrrrip-tug-tug all the way down. Then she tried to blow dry my hair using a round boar-bristle brush, pulling the lengths outwards and up to... I don't know, volumise? Pull it straight? She would get the brush halfway along my hair and it would literally get stuck... so she'd pull it back, still with the stuck hair entwined in it, and try to brush through another section. OWWW. I had to step in then and say something because it was so painful I felt sick. I didn't even WANT a blow-dry, but I didn't want to make a deal of it, because...

the salon owner was so patronising and belittling about me having long hair in the first place, and was really dismissive every time I would say something like "oh yeah I only want about an inch off" or "I'm trying to be super gentle with it because I'm growing it out". She said in a laughing, pseudo-joking way that I was mad, that long hair made people look short, that I should 'do something' with it, etc etc. I felt embarrassed and self-conscious, and it made me even more unwilling to speak up when this girl was actively hurting me the whole time because I felt like I was already coming across overly precious or something? And I wasn't! She just made me feel that way, which was unfair... but at the time I didn't want to make more of a fuss or ruin the trip for my friend.

So yes, tl;dr, I got a trim and the hairdresser was super rough. My scalp is still tender 8 hours later, and I've had a headache since I left. And I'm really scared that more is going to fall out, like when you re-pot a plant and then a few days later it decides it couldn't handle the strain and dies... lol :/ Please tell me I am legitimately being crazy now!

Jomo -- I'm so sorry! The salon I went to in my last town was like that. I had to brace myself for Helga's House of Pain every time I went there. The salon experience is supposed to be luxurious and relaxing. I found it painful, terrifying, and - yes - belittling. I don't go to salon's anymore (its been about a year) because of this bad experience.

A one-time rough go at your hair won't destroy your hair. Hopefully it will be easier to let the experience go when your scalp stops hurting.

In the meantime, hugs! :grouphug:

Oh Jomo, that's awful! :grouphug:

I'm sure your hair isn't horribly damaged, but maybe you'll find some time to do a nice long S&D and a deep conditioning treatment to make up to your poor hair a little! :flower:

Jomo, that sounds a lot like the visit I had last August. The girl was really rough, and ripped right through every stroke. She didn't listen to anything. I didn't lose a lot of hair afterwards, so I hope you won't, either. I have a great stylist I found since then, but I'm still not wanting to pay for someone else to do my hair anymore. I think I can trim it myself from now on. Sorry you had such a painful experience. :grouphug:

Jomo you are not being crazy and definitely not 'precious' with your hair, although you have every right to be as precious as you want!

I do go to a salon for colour every 6-8 weeks, and they now no longer ask me when I'm going to trim it as I've already told them when I'm ready I'll let them know, otherwise no trims!

The girl who shampoos my hair (and she does do a good job, doesn't pile it up into a tangly mess and does give me a nice head massage) tried to comb it out once using a fine-toothed comb (I have thick, medium to coarse hair!)!

I no longer get it combed out and explained that the only time I comb my hair is when I'm in the shower with conditioner. I don't even let them towel dry it anymore because they squeeze and rub the hair in the towel.

I also had the same treatment, she literally ripped[you could hear it] my hair while combing it, and it hurt so bad ,I spoke up to tell her I would do it instead. That didn't go over well ..now no more salons for me,my crea clip or hubbie cut my hair.A lot of stylists seem to have no idea how to treat, comb or brush very long hair .

Seriously, I went to the salon with a friend (she was getting a trim) a while ago and the stylist was soo harsh and rough with her hair. I remember growing up and when my mom would detangle my hair as a kid she was always super gentle. I've always figured that would fall under common sense of hair care, but I guess not.

Jomo, so sorry you had such a lousy experience. Just treat your hair really nice and it will recover. I haven't been to a salon in years as the one I went to they didn't seem to understand how to treat long hair.
I use to be like you, grin and bear it but now I don't have to worry about it as I had a couple of rough sessions at salons in the past and sometimes attitudes regarding really long hair are not so good.
Now, I'm extremely protective of my locks and if I ever did enter a salon again, I would be firm at stating what they could do with my hair. As time goes by, I'm less concerned with what others think and what I want when I'm paying for a service. Next time maybe you can go shopping for hair toys. You'll be safe that way!
Im sure there are good salons that cater to long hair but I never found one.
I feel so much better taking care of my own hair and avoiding anyone who might potentially abuse your hair through either sheer stupidity or lack of knowledge regarding proper treatment for long hair and that should be inexcusable for a hair salon! Take care and hope you never have to endure that kind of crap, again. :o

Aww thank you alishaxmarie :) I think my eyes are a bit more bog-standard blue than they look there... I just have a lot of white in them so they pick up the colours I'm wearing. XD
I stretch washes as much as I can, but I have to wash at least twice a week (I am an oil slick after 2.5 days, but I just stick with it an extra day... the oil-slick tendency also means CO was out for me, too. I just get sooo greasy without suds, haha!)
I'm super curious about the aloe gel and SMT, will definitely give it a go! Anything that will help my hair stick together without clumping would help the frizzies calm down, I think. And a trim is DEFINITELY in order. Thanks for the ideas :)

At the risk of terrifying you even further regarding shedding, yeah, it wasn't pretty:

September-ish 2012?

I think I was towards the worse end of the scale but by no means unusually bad... but then, some women get really very little, like maybe 1-2% of their hair volume and that's it. You could be one of the lucky ones!

Did it just grow back by itself? My hairline has looked like the first picture for at least a year, possibly longer. It's my number one appearance-related insecurity. I haven't been pregnant, though. I'm guessing it's like that because I've been underweight for a long time.

Jomo
April 2nd, 2014, 07:52 PM
Yes it did just grow in by itself - once it finally stopped falling out and was at that point in the first picture, it very quickly started to thicken up. Yeah, you probably know how being underweight can play all sorts of havoc with your hormones, which could cause hair loss in the same way it does for women post-partum (when hormones go totally haywire). I wouldn't be surprised if the hair started to grow back in by itself after a little weight gain - but then, I have a binge-eating issue and I know how difficult weight problems can be. All the best for a thicker hairline soon!

Also, thanks for all the commiseration, everyone. :grouphug:
I will definitely not be going back to the hairdresser in the foreseeable future... I can easily do my own trims, this was just supposed to be a little indulgence and a fun day out. At least my scalp isn't sore anymore this morning and I'm enjoying my tiny bit of colour:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/jackthepumpkinhead/jackthepumpkinhead012/a31543b2-d7ef-4e45-9985-2ac6027958c3.jpg

I just got some more haircare bits and pieces for my birthday (seamless comb, knitted hairties, fancy conditioners to try, silk pillow case, coconut oil) so I'm hoping by the end of this year it will all have made a difference in fighting the frizzies and adding length. I probably won't trim again before 2015 (or longer, knowing me >_<).

P.S. Lindenare your hair is glorious! Beautiful colour and so close to tailbone :)

Henna'ing my roots tomorrow... Got almost 5/8" growth in 32 days! WooHoo! I love it when my gray roots get obnoxious. ;) If I don't see 'em I don't think my hair is growing at all....

I have really bad thinning at my hairline so I got some Garnier Fructis Fall Fight stuff. It's got caffeine and biotin but it gunks up my hair. I'm going to use it for a while and see how it works out. I'll treat my hair/scalp the night before I wash so I don't have to be greasy for long. I'm also going to try to wear it up more. It's always down and I don't realize how much stress it gets. Will hopefully help fill it out a bit.

Well hello... I generally don't post very often, simply because i am the lurker type... And posting pictures is kinda hard... But i think this warrants a post here..

Please keep in mind that i am short. 4 ft 11 inches.... Or 150 cmhttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4/b_s_marbid/imagejpg1_zps499269cf.jpg

Hip? My hands are on my hips... Where my pants begin... I rarely ever measure by body markers.. Because i have curly hair and that depends on how i wear my hair... But i usually have my hair in this state from damp buns... Sooooo i decided i would claim milestones like this... Is pretty consistent... And i really wana be able to say i have reached a milestone... Sooo...

I am hip right?
A bit past it?.. My hair is long enough for the very ends to be caught up in my pants...
:)

Ooooo i cant wait for tail bone length... I wager a few more months.. Say 4 months.. And i would be able to claim tail bone in bun waves...

P.s. Just in case you're wondering.. My hair in its standard curl pattern is about an inch past waist. Lol... It seems that as it grows.. It just curls more, i feel like the longer it is, the more is shrinks. Bah. Oh well.

Here is a picture of curls.. Sorry a bit blurry.. But i think its enough to get the idea.. P.s. I should have added more conditioner this day... Had to rewet to brush these out.

Had to rewet to brush these out.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4/b_s_marbid/imagejpg1_zpsf3f92d83.jpg

Definitely past hip, and gorgeous as all get out! :agape: The one aspect of curly hair I don't envy (have I mentioned recently that I have deep, undying curl envy?) is shrinkage, but dang your hair is looking LONG! I like your method of 'stretching' for length checks and milestones because it'll be so much more accurate in terms of actual growth and length (since your hair loves curling so much it just uses the new length for more curls lol).

Ooft, I'm well overdue for an update! Everyones locks are looking just stunning :thud: As for me, I've crept past BCL (hurrah!) and I'm sort of waiting for an arbitrary point that I can call tailbone, because darned if I can feel it! Bothersome bones hiding from me! Nevertheless, here's a (dark, but accurate length-wise!) picture!
http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af104/Sylvestrix/4026c7a9-3599-4e74-b9f5-d09b752383c7_zps48bf1be8.jpg
I can never get my hemline to sit nicely for photos. Le sigh!

Goodness, LOVE that color and shine and length! :crush: I think you're closing in on (if not already at) TBL... and this is kind of gross and TMI, but a good way to know when you're definitely just past TBL is if you've made it to BHL... :tmi: :rollin:

I haven't figured out BHL. :p. Many of us who can't feel our tailbone, consider that they are at TBL when they sit on a hard surface and their hair touches it. That's how I had to do it.

So I took some real length pictures for the first time in months, just for this thread. I think I might be getting close to tailbone after all...? I can't really find my actual tailbone, and my hair won't sit still anyway... Thanks for the tips though, guys, I will check the sitting on a flat surface way next time it's down!

Beautiful, GoldenSilk! It's difficult to say because everyone is shaped differently, but if you aren't already at TBL, you probably only have an inch or so to go! :cheer: I would say a safe place to call tailbone is at the bottom of your shirt in the first picture, and my wrists also line up perfectly with my tailbone, so you could take another shot just for yourself to see if that's true or not.

HTH, and what stunning locks! :thud:

I would say at least 2 inches to go still. I estimate your TB to be the mid-point of your back pockets.

Ocelan

I'd also say that you'd be there in about 2 inches. It looks to me you might be a bit below BCL now, but then again everyone is different. :)

I've come to the conclusion that even though I thought I knew where my TBL ended I am not so sure anymore, so I'll just wing it and call it a bit before I reach 100 cm of hair which should be atleast beyond it.

Wao... It just looks sooo long! I'm envious. When i reach tailbone my hair will only be just past waist on an average ehight woman... By the time i get to your length i will be classic.. Wished my hair looked that long at hip..

On a side note, i say you have about an inch or so left to tailbone. Maybe. Just estimating..

I'm going to measure my tailbone by the hair touching the chair when i sit.. It's about 4 inches away.. No idea where my tailbone really is, but this way i take the guesswork out of it.. Its a great idea..

Enjoy your growth... You have beautiful, healthy and shiny blond hair.

Thank you all for the compliments and the help! :o <3 I won't call tailbone right now, but maybe when it hits the chair when I sit... Which I think might be the fullest part of my hips as well.

Either way, I plan to maintain at approximately tailbone for the forseeable future, so I'll be in this thread a while... I'm starting grad school, and I'm not going to have the time to baby the ends enough to stretch trims.

Fun fact, I just checked and my wrists line up with classic, not tailbone. I have a short torso in proportion to my arms and legs.

And I think it's so neat to see the proportional differences in people.
I know most people have fingertip as a marker in between classic and knee, but my fingertips almost line up exactly with classic. I could be really unusually proportioned, though, because I think my body is 'halved' right at TBL.

Sure you can join us! I'll arrive the party somewhere around the end of this year myself. :)

Oh and now that the dog rolled away to snore next to me, I checked my wrist alignment and it seems my wrist is at about my 100 cm mark which is smack in the middle of TBL and classic (which are both about 1.5 - 2 inches away from it in different directions). Fingertip then again would be maybe 3 inches below classic, which would be nearly mid-thigh but not quite. Now I feel like this (http://www.freakingnews.com/pictures/69500/Christina-Applegate-With-Long-Arms-69697.jpg)...

My wrists are pretty close to classic length too. I'm also going to hover around tailbone. My braids are pencil thin starting about APL. My hair fluffs out nicely but I hate how thin it is. I have a lot of breakage that needs grown out and the updos I've attempted look pretty pathetic (plus I've been watching torrinpaige's YouTube videos and I want her hair!)

I don't know what happened to my hair. Seems like most of my hairline has "fringe" that I never cut! I have about three inches of uniform growth all over the front of my head... Now I know I didn't lose all that hair 6 months ago! Once I'm able to easily post photos, I'll post a pic. It's really disheartening how areas like that won't catch up for YEARS!

My wrists are right around my tailbone length, or a bit longer.

Allie, how frustrating! If they're around your face, maybe get them styled into something that suits you and you like? I have a small fringe because I hate my five-head :p

I love torrin paige! I bought a tangle teaser because of her, and I actually really love it. I also love that she makes a lot of her hair toys and shows how simple it can be.

Dovetail, I'll have to get creative but the sad part is that I have a section that goes over an inch into my hairline. I'd have to do a big trim, I think. I don't want to have to cut bangs! It's only really noticeable when I pull my hair back right after I air-dry. I just want to know what caused it! The rest of my head is pretty dense but the sides and front are sparse for some reason.

I just checked and my wrists are more or less TBL for me too! :) My fingertips are approximately 3-4 in below classic, which is above the middle of my thigh by only an inch or two I'd guess... But those are both approximations as I don't have measuring tape or a ruler lol.

Yay, we're going to have quite the party of maintain-ers! :hollie:
I'm not planning to start maintaining until the end of this year, and then I'll be at TBL for several years to get rid of pre-LHC dye, mechanical, and baking soda damage+thinning.

Har, one of the reasons I'm doing some growth experiments and taking all of my supplements so religiously is so that I have as much length past TBL as possible when I cut back up to start maintaining. I want to trim out about 2 feet of hair before I start growing again! (goodness, I'd never calculated the exact amount before... I could be at TBL for 3 or 4 years!)

So with our discussion of where our wrists and fingertips reach, I realized that since my arms (hands really) end at classic, I may not want to grow longer than that. I've always thought that having hair that is longer than my reach would be difficult and not worth the wow-factor of the length. I'm sure I'll try it at some point when I have more time to devote to my hair, but at least this new info makes the years of maintaining at TBL much easier to contemplate because TBL is really only a few inches shorter than what may be my ultimate goal. Plus, then when I do grow past classic, I'll have nice healthy not-super-tangly ends and I can really enjoy the length at it's best.

I really want to get to tailbone within the next year or so, but my ends are really damaged. This is because of constant washing/blowdrying/leaving it down pre LHC, and I've now stopped all of my bad habits, and I'm s and d ing regularly, but I still have tons of split ends. I'm probably just brushing hip right now? Obviously I can't repair damage, so I'm microtrimming once a month, but is there anyway I can help my hair? Or at least make my ends look better?

But honestly I have 6 inches to go. I'm almost at 33 inches and TBL is at 39 inches. So my goal for now is BCL (36 inches) and I believe I will reach it by the end of the year but I'll have to wait a little longer for TBL. :(

I have the same problem, though my longest ends are only just past waist. I'm microtrimming too, but the damage is several inches. It doesn't look toooo bad (I think) and I'm hesitant to do a proper trim. The main problem is that it's dry and tangles so easily. I'm trying to learn nice protective buns and braids to keep them from tangling, but is there anything else I should be doing?

Also, this may be a silly question, but my sister insists split ends travel upwards unless cut out - is this true?

We can keep each other company (and keep each other sane lol)! :)
As tough as it might be to maintain for so long, I think the end result of terrifically healthy TBL hair is going to feel so wonderful, especially after years of having fairly damaged ends.

I'm already preparing myself mentally for the purposeful stall by planning special hair toy celebrations and whatnot (you know, every 6 months I maintain I get a new toy, etc). Once I get to the point where the underlayer is all healthy and I'm just waiting for a few 'layers' of damage to grow out I may start letting it 'grow' at half rate instead of cutting all growth. But these are all just plans, and I know what the universe tend to do with those!

I too shall maintain... But that will be when i get to classic.. At 40 inches... It feels way too short now, i want to get to a point where my hair feels long and smexi before i keep it there for a few years... I might also chop up instead of maintaining.... I wont feel as short if i chop off at classic than chopping off at hip.... But i dunno... Will see how i feel bout it once at classic.... Only have bout two years to go....in the meantime... I have very curly 3b/c hair and when it curls up it eats up the length! Very frustrating! I just cut about an inch from the longest part of the U hemline, which helped to even up the hemline, but sadly, there went two months of growth, right into the trashcan! :( For us curlies, that is a huge deal, since due to the extra weight of that inch that was cut off, it is more like 2-3 inches that just went into the trashbin. :( Well, thanks for this thread! It's nice to know that I am not the only one who is very frustrated with growing from waist to hip/tlb. I am thinking and hoping alot! that I will be at tbl within the next couple of years! ;D Cheers! Happy Growing to all!!! :writer:

I'm 1/2" away from waist, so I refuse to go back to the other thread because of anoverzealouz hairdresser. In a couple of months I shall be truly waist again! (My hair grows sloooowly)

Thank you :D I'm not sure if it's more like 2.25"/2.5" or something, when I got DBF to help me measure he was looking at me so strangely I thought best not to ask him to double check  I think I'll call TBL semi-confidently when my ends touch my chair. How far do you have left to TBL?

I don't know exactly how far I have til TBL, but it feels like about 3", maybe a bit more. Hehe, my backside is too... 'cushioned' to do the seat test properly, so I'm just going to call it when my ends are wrist length.
(Whoo! I just realized that since I'm not trimming I can count pretty well on having TBL hair in 6-7 months!)

Cathair and Veryhairfairy -- it sounds like you both are making great progress! I will definitely not make it by the end of the year. I'm microtrimming each month, so the growth is slow. But I'm really enjoying the process most of the time. I felt more comfortable once I hit waist and could do some styles and enjoy some length. Now I can be (relatively) patient.

I'm signing in. I had hip length couple of weeks ago, but I had to cut off 2 or 3 cm because my hemline looked.... disappointing, now I am somewhere between waist and hip, but I have more even (but still not perfect) hemline. Hope to be BCL in summer. It's seems like I'm in this "between waist and hip" hell forever. Great thread! :)

I need to change the v-hemline since my ends look thin and scraggly but it's the haircut prolly because I just hack at my hair lol. I can't wait for my knock off creaclip to arrive. Same here! I've been here forEVER it seems. I was almost hip last August and then trimmed 4" (which was needed and I don't regret). That trim took me to BSL! Now, I'm about 2" away from hip again (very short torso) and am hoping to be solid hip by September. I've been in the BSL/Hip stage for 2 years now. And my hair STILL feels short.

I never though of wrist length to determine TBL! Guess I need an anatomy lesson. It's an easy way for me to see how much longer I have to go to reach this milestone. Can't wait to get there. Think I have about the same amount as you to get there, so that's not to bad. :)

Yes, I know this feeling, with unstretched hair, at least. I feel like I'm never going to move past waist wurly - been here for months. I feel like some days my hair looks shorter than it looked 6 months ago thanks to the curlier days (and the hair is having curlier days thanks to spring rains, heat and humidity.. maybe that's why I'm stuck at waist :p). Doesn't help that I'm really tall, so it already takes a bit longer to reach milestones in general, haha.

Today, for instance, after washing and brushing out my hair, I'm just barely at waist wurly (bottom yellow line is waist).

I don't know if I still have the picture of how long my hair was in May 2013, but the longest hairs were just above BSL curly, so I threw in a rough estimate of that length to track my growth. Quite pleased with the rate of growth, especially considering I had only started to wear my hair up 2 and a half months ago, so the length hadn't been protected over the past year, but was still retained fairly well.

Stretched, my hair goes down to the top of my belt.

We have very similar hair types, and I feel your pain! I've been hanging out between waist and hip forever. Some days it legitimately feels long and brushes my hips, while on other days it seems to bounce up to above waist. Argh.

Well we did a small sampling (either on this thread or the TBL in 2014 one) and found that many people have wrist length at TBL, Classic, and even Hip! So for me it's great because my wrists are TBL and my fingertips are classic, easy. But some people may not have similar proportions, so a mirror check would be in order.

It definitely takes the guesswork out of TBL for me since I don't really know where it is, but like I said to Komao, all of our body proportions could be different. :)

And my hair STILL feels short.

Same here. Plus, from front it looks like it's waist, so that frustrates me even more. I absolutely hate this trim that I had, since I'm a really slow grower, about 0.5 cm a month, so I didn't cut out 2 or 3 months of growth.... for me it's 4-6. Hate, hate, hate cutting my hair but I really had to, it looked rather... ratty. 10 years it took me to grow out bleaching damage so in the past 10 years it grew from APL to almost hip. I really have patience so it seems.... :D

Everyone's proportions are different. For me, my wrists pretty much line up with TBL. Others may not. I can't actually feel where my tailbone is (perhaps because of some spurs I have on it) so I used the sit down method. When my hair touched the seat of a hard bottomed chair when seated on it, I was at TBL. I saw that my hair also lined up with my wrists at that point. At that point, I was about 2 inches above Classic. I know my hair has grown since even if it doesn't look like it. I
Thought Classic would come quickly after TBL. Not so, lol. Guess I'm being impatient. :p

From what I've understood, hip length is the when your hair reaches the top of your hip bone (the ilium) so if you poke yourself in the side until you find a bone, that's hip height. Personally, I didn't count hip until it reached the top of the iliac crest though (where your hip bone sticks out at the front.)

As for you, I'd say you're either at hip or just a wee bit above, and your hair is gorgeous to boot!

Queenovnight, I'd say you're definitely hip! I think putting your hands on your hip bones in front (ileac crest) is the best way to measure. I love your waves, too. :)

Marron, in that picture, you actually look an inch or two past waist to me. I guess it depends on whether you count smallest waist or natural waist. Anyway, you have beautiful hair! :)

ETA update: I almost trimmed my hair last night... Ends are acting grabby. I think they're caught in a cycle of buildup, needing clarifying, being dry, then getting buildup again when I moisturize them, and they tangle at all of those stages. :( I may still trim... No point in rushing to tailbone at the expense of damage, if I'm just intending to maintain once I get there... Right?

GoldenSilk again: I've had these "cut 'em" craving these days, too. I know it's a rather unpopular advice but maybe a few drops of a silicone leave in might help you out? At least, it helped me :)

By the way: My hair is not that thin as it looks in the picture (it was freshly straightened) . This is more accurate although it looks half an inch shorter:

You don't actually want to "rub" exactly. Put about a pea sized amount on a palm and rub your palms and fingers together to warm/spread the coconut oil on both palm sides. Then, starting at the highest point that you want the oil, sandwich a strip of hair between your two palms and slide them down towards the ends. Repeat as necessary. Then comb to distribute if hair is wet/damp, brush if dry (unless you're a wavy/curly ;)).

So last night my daughter asked me to measure her hair, and I did, and she gained some length and was pleased. Then she asked if I wanted her to measure my hair. Well, my official measure-in date is not until May 1st, but I said okay, why not. So, she measured and apparently I lost an inch in the last month. My hair shrunk back to 30". :hmm:

I hope after a proper wash and dry that I will find my hair has not shrunk after all and that instead I have gained some length.

My hair shrunk too! When I first joined, it measured 34" now it hovers around 33.25" I must have screwed it up somehow... I also hate how different camera angles make my hair look shorter....

I find that I've got to measure my hair when it's the tiniest bit damp to get a good reading, because otherwise my hair sproings up into that one S wave, and it's impossible to get an accurate reading once that happens.

Hey guys! I have been neglecting LHC for a few months. I'm not really sure why actually, probably school. So I'd just like to check in. I must say you all have beautiful hair!

As for me, I'm at 30.5 inches. Waist was 29 inches and Hip is 33 inches so I'm 2.5 inches away. 5 more months of the waist to hip abyss.

I've also been remiss in my LHC postings as well! Welcome back!

I think I've officially hit hip, which isn't too far from waist where I chopped back to a few months ago. I would still say I'm about 4-5 inches from tailbone though, so I've still got a ways to go. My ends are feeling kind of rough and I'm not convinced it's your good old fashioned buildup issue. It was yet another rough winter (lookin' at you, polar vortex!) and I'm guessing this is the resulting dryness and damage from that. I'll still try clarifying/chelating and follow it with a heavy duty SMT, but frankly, I'm probably going to need another trim, even though my last one was only three months ago. Joy. Fortunately I have a new hairdresser that only cuts what I tell him, so losing growth won't be a problem. Just wish I didn't have to do another trim so soon.

GoldenSilk again: I've had these "cut 'em" craving these days, too. I know it's a rather unpopular advice but maybe a few drops of a silicone leave in might help you out? At least, it helped me :)

You're probably right! I'm usually cone-free, but I'm not offended or anything. It's more that they make my scalp greasy (and even if just on the ends, leave ins always seem to make it to my scalp somehow), and I haven't found any coney products that I'm not allergic to yet. :( Maybe it's worth experimenting some more, though. Thanks!

It looks like your milestones will be coming fast, by the way! I love how shiny your hair looks in the second picture! :D

I was at physical therapy today and had my hair down because I had just taken a shower and wanted to let it dry as long as possible. So when my physical therapist asked me to turn around so she could see my hips, I asked her, "Since you're back there and my hair is down, is my hair reaching the top of my iliac crest yet?" (She knows I am a long hair enthusiast.) She told me YES, it is indeed to the top of my iliac crest! My official measure and picture day is May 1st, so then I'll get to see for myself. I'm definitely doing a hands-on-hips picture, because I think I've been drawing my line for hip too low all this time.

Hey now! How great is that?! (and how awesome is it that you had someone with medical knowledge to ask instead of a sister who just says "your hips are SOOO big, where are they supposed to start?")

I'm looking forward to seeing your latest length picture with the new ombre, it's looked visually longer to me since you did it so maybe it magically grew your ends! :D

In henna frustration news:
I really think that this weekend I will be doing a single overnight sun-in over coconut oil soak to lighten my henna. I've been mulling it over for months, and I've been doing the oil soaks which have really worked on my roots (I've brought it from red to yellow on the newest inch of hair!), but the oil has done nothing to the length.

I'm hoping the coconut oil will prevent most of the peroxide damage from the sun-in, but I also know I'll be maintaining for a year and then either continuing to maintain (or trimming half my growth) for several more years so it will grow out with the rest of the damage.
I basically figure; if there was ever a time to do a damaging practice, it would be before a whole year of maintaining length.

I'm really excited to get back to the color that I love!

Sarahlabyrinth your hair looks past waist to me. I thought you were already at waist in all your pictures prior to today's. You almost look to be flirting with hip.

Veryhairyfairy I told my PT that she made my day. Tomorrow's my length shot. I am super eager to see and measure! :) I hope you get the color you want without too much damage. And yes, gliding into a maintenance phase is probably the best time.

Veryhairyfairy, I've recently used sun in twice and there isn't any extra damage on my hair. Leaving it in overnight probably won't help much as it's heat activated. I blow dried my hair and it lightened a bit but that on virgin blonde hair so may not be much help. Best of luck

I've felt like my hair was starting to stall this last month so it was a very welcome surprise! Haha, that's awesome, here's to us then! :toast:

I'll borrow (steal ) my mothers camera Friday and rope DBF into helping me with a length shot (the man is easily bribed!). Thanks for the input, I'm glad to know it didn't damage your hair! :) The reason I'm doing the overnight soak is because I don't own any kind of heat appliance lol! 31.5" = waist
35" = hip
37" = BCL
40" = TBL
42.5" = wrist
45" = classic

:grouphug: It's frustrating to feel like your efforts aren't helping the splits!
What I'd suggest is a weekly appointment for S&D so you don't go crazy (make sure those scissors you use are hair scissors that have only been used on hair), and wearing it up in protective styles to give you strands a rest and keep it off your mind.

I started wearing my hair up all day everyday about 8 months ago, and since then my splits have steadily decreased to the point where I find maybe 5 through my whole head now. I think the protective styles help prevent new splits from forming, thus allowing me to cut out the old ones bit by bit.

LLL -- congratulations on reaching hip! I'm very bad at spotting body markers for some reason, but it sounds like there is a consensus for you. I hope to join you in the coming months. Your hair looks gorgeous and I love your henna ombre.

Ocelan -- its always a treat to see your hair. It looks really beautiful. Your reverse ombre is at a lovely stage now. I hope that the growing out dye aspect of your hair journey is now kind of fun. It looks lovely!

I did my microtrim yesterday. Just 0.25 inches, as usual. It feels good to have the fresh ends and slowly thickening up my hemline. My growing is/will be slow but I think microtrimming is the best way forward for my hair. I'm just glad that I can be patient now. I was a bit of a nutter before I got to waist!

Laura, grats on hip! You grow so fast! I think you are gaining on me! :)

Crumpet, thank you! And yes, I think I'm starting to like the stage my "roots" are at now and it will look even more like an actual reverse ombre once I get past this shoulder length stage. It might actually start looking intentional! I was actually surprised it looked not-so-bad when I saw the picture above, not having seen my hair from behind in a while again. I was still under the impression I had less roots and that the demarcation line was more harsh, but this might actually be the time when I'll enjoy my two-toned hair. I might never have it other color than my natural again so let's take everything out of it while it is this way. :)

Mariakatija, thank you. :)

Veryhairyfairy, well I can see how my hair looks lighter now than it did with shorter roots, but I still would call myself blonette instead of blonde. In some lights I even doubt my blonetteness and think my hair is light brown as I have considered myself mostly a dark blonette for a long while now. Maybe this would be blonde in some parts of the world, but not here in Scandinavia. I think most people still would call me a brunette here. Maybe it's also a camera thing since I did use a "proper" camera before and these photos were taken with my camera phone. Oh the joys of hair color changing so drastically with different lighting! One thing I want to do at this length is learn what works for me as far as haircare and products go. I want to figure out a routine that I can live with when my hair grows to longer lengths. I noticed that a lot of the super-lengths don't have very intricate routines. They seem to keep it simple. I think that is wise. If it is too detailed, too many steps, then it won't be enjoyable or low enough maintenance at longer lengths. Some of the things I have tried, I have done it just to see if it worked for me, like the growth rate experiments. So far, the only thing that has impacted my growth rate is my eating habits. Other things I have tried to figure out which way I like it best, like the products and type of hair washing that I want to use. So far CO-washing 3-4 times a week, and diluted shampooing once a month or so seems to be working well for me. Oiling my hair is also working well and only takes a few minutes. Doing deep conditioning treatments aren't as easy for me. I seem to never want to set aside the time, or I can't figure out where they fit in my wash schedule. Same with pre-wash oil soaking. Making it to TBL should take me another year from where I am now. Then I plan to sort of maintain there for 6-12 months, by trimming half or a third of my growth, before moving on to greater lengths. So I'm hoping between now and when my maintenance period is up, I will have figured out what products work, and what routines my hair likes best, and figure out how to fit it all into my life. This has been a novel, by LauraLongLocks.

LLL -- Like you, I am looking forward to a simple routine as I grow. Its pretty simple now: co-wash every other wash/shampoo every other wash; wash once per week; oil most days; deep treatment once per week (this may be too much in summer); protein treatment whenever I can be bothered (highly infrequent!). I expect that once I grow out some damage that I will be able to get by with my co-wash/shampoo wash + oiling as the only normal components of my routine. This will be nice!

Johannah Your hair looks amazing!!!! If i saw you in real life, i would be one of those creepy strangers who want to touch your hair without asking haha So, how much do you plan to cut? I would start with small trims then check hemline and only continue to cut after that because even 1.5cm trim can make a HUGE difference so dont cut to much.

Ocelan sometimes the hemline flips in all directions especially when freshly cut which can make it hard to tell if theres a difference BUT if you look closely im sure you can see it. I think it looks great and your hair is oh so pretty!

lindsayhv I still feel like that to! I have to check my length in the mirror to make sure that im STILL there haha You are at waist FOR SURE tho! So congrats and welcome to the club!

mariakatija You look to be flirting with hip so maybe by next month until you reach solid? Hmmm.... You should place your hands on your hips then take a photo, it may be easier to tell this way :)

I swore I would stay out of this thread because growing to tailbone sounds so daunting, but I have to de-lurk to compliment you all on the beautiful hair! Such wonderful pictures! Congratulations to everyone hitting hip, I agree it's kind of a tough marker to call on yourself.

Ocelan, as a fellow blonette I can only hope that my colour looks as pretty as yours! Living in Scandinavia as a blonette is a bit disheartening because what would be considered beautifully blonde elsewhere is second-class brunette hair here.

linsayhv, I too can definitely relate to feeling like your hair is BSL when it's in fact waist length. I think it's because at least on me, my back curves inwards after BSL so that my hair doesn't actually brush against my waist and I don't feel the extra length. I had declared hip my ultimate goal earlier, but now I think it'd be nice to feel the ends of my hair brushing against me, which would mean at least BCL.

Count me in as one of the Seekers of a Simple Routine. I'm too lazy to really have ever gone wild with leave-ins and treatments, though, so I'm not sure I can really simplify things beyond what I'm doing now. I should find an opening in my schedule for an SMT every now and then, I'm fairly sure my hair could use the moisture. The sauna would be the perfect place I suppose, but if we have company over I'm too self-conscious to start slathering strange concoctions on my head. :pinktongue:

I am so with you when it comes to simplifying my routine. I like the point you make about how a complicated/time consuming routine would be less enjoyable and more like a chore at longer lengths.
Thankfully I've already done all of my new-to-LHC experimenting, and so now I'm just slowly getting myself to a more simple routine.
Right now it's not too complicated: wash 2x a week with CO one time and diluted scalp-only shampooing the other time, pre-wash overnight oiling if I remember/care, no DTs ever lol! (actually, writing that out made me realize there isn't a whole lot that I need/want to simplify in my routine!)
I do have to take extra special care of my hair below BSL due to damage, and so maybe when I've cut all that out it won't be necessary to S&D so often, or take care to dampen my ends with catnip tea once or twice a day.

Anyway, new henna color=perfect!!! :cheese: (the hydrogen peroxide lightening worked perfectly, and I managed to do an application of the new henna that matched my roots with my ends almost exactly!)
I'll be taking pics next weekend because the henna needs to oxidize (and I have lots of stressful school things this week). I just had to share my joy that I managed to replace my cherry-red henna with orangey Irish setter red!

I'm still in my new to LHC experimenting phase. Weeding out the useless things, or the things that are too much hassle to keep up long term.

I think I've reached hip. It's not too far from my waist. I that upper yellow stripe is my waist so my hip is about 1.5" down from that (about where the dark blue line is on the right.... What do you guys think?). My daughter was impatient so I had to be quick. Hope I'll get a better shot next month. I'm loving my hair in that pic tho! My hair loves coconut oil!

My routine is very simple. Before LHC I washed shampoo only in cold water for shine and didn't use any conditioner because I thought it gunked up my hair needlessly. I washed every other day (and I was a greasy mess by that night). I would blot with towel and not touch it with my brush until it was bone dry. I'd wash at night so it would be air dried, not brushed or conditioned, bed-head every other morning. Not a pretty sight.

My routine now is same washing procedure (cold water, cone-free cheapo dollar store stuff) but then I scrunch with White Rain coconut conditioner (has cones but my hair loves them... Tried some with VO5 without cones and there was no love) and then ignore it (no brush or comb) until it's almost dry. (Comb and loose braid then.) But now I'm able to go 5-6 days. I coconut oil two times between washes and use the coconut condish daily. It gets a little too slick and gunky looking by 4th or 5th day but not bad enough where it's too gross. I tried stretching to a week but that was bad. Limp and greasy.

And my payback is my shiny wonderful hair in the pic above!!!

I'll be here! Funny that you were interested in my cow milking video. Ha! I glork that creamy raw milk goodness down every single day. I love it!

And wearing your hair down for finals, totally do it! Just remember to bring a detangling implement with you so you can keep it looking nice all day, and if you use oils or leave-in conditioners, put some at the nape of your neck to help keep that area from tangling while it is down. And of course you are going to attract attention... BCL hair isn't common. But isn't that the fun of wearing it up all the time? When you DO wear it down, it's like you are suddenly a rock star.

I started micro-trimming (the amount tends to vary so far lol) yet I'm still maintaining/gaining (it's really hard to tell with wurly hair) some length so I think the weather is definitely increasing my growth. I've only trimmed 3 times so far but the first trim was the largest at about an inch and the hair seemed to grow back within a week or two! I think I trim too much off to be micro-trimming so often but I like the blunt ends and growing the thickness down and my hair splits so easily so idk what I intend to do
