I decided to start using cones and SLS again. My hair got extremely dry from SLS- and conefree products. Now I clarified and used a coney conditioner and my hair is like BOOM, haha :p

I've found coney conditioners to be the most effective, especially in winter. They seal like nobody's business.

I'm making my own conditioner RIGHT NOW in my kitchen! I bought behentrimonium methosulfate/cetearyl alcohol flakes on eBay, and now I'm waiting for repairmen to leave so that I can try it out in the shower! I think I made it kind of runny, but that's how I like my conditioner anyway.

I'm jealous of LHCers who use cones, I wish I could make them work for me! It seems counter intuitive that my damaged ends get dry and unhappy the second I use a coney conditioner... persnickety strands.

My hair gets drier in winter and cones make them drier, I guess. It suddenly got really cold inhere so probably that's the reason my hair became so dry! :p

Is anyone else in the same "have to maintain soon" boat?
There's just so much damage and damage related thinning from BSL down... I know that it's only going to get worse if I just keep growing, but I really don't like the idea of maintaining or even slowly growing! I told myself I'd maintain at TBL, and I'm really going to try! I'd love advice on how to stay strong, especially because it's going to take at least a year and a half...
If any of you have ever maintained, how did you stay strong?

I am! I was originally going to grow to TBL and maintain there indefinitely, as it is my final length goal. I'm currently at "can I call this hip" and will probably be solidly at hip by March. I have a feeling I'll maintain there for the rest of 2014...I also have damage and damage related thinning from BSL down, and it's really starting to bug me. I would rather enjoy how my hair looks and feels than sacrifice both of those for length...which is why its taken me so long to grow.

I will also be maintaining for a good six months once I get to tb I plan on cutting alot of old heat damage out and still be tb length but I'm sick of dots and splits what I've found to be working right now is to go back to co washing it seems to keep the damaged bits moisturised and do a pre oiling day before every wash. I've also been s &d'ing weekly may seem a bit much but it's keeping the splits at bay and since I've been doing that I'm not getting as many if I leave it I get so many it's disheartening and this way I think I'm retaining more length.

Looks beautiful, Johanna! :)

It sounds like we're in the same boat, maskedrose and bunzfan. We can keep each other strong and keep company as we visually stall for some time. I'm so not looking forward to maintaining... I've even canceled my last two trim dates to keep extra length! I'm telling myself that I HAVE to stop at TBL for awhile or no more hair toys!

I should start doing more overnight oilings and DTs, too. I've recently fallen in love with catnip tea in the form of a spritz for dry hair, I'm hoping that it will continue to make my hair shiny and smooth, and I'm hoping that reduced splits will come with long term use.

Wow, everyone's hair looks great! I'm joining this thread, while still remaining in the "BSL to waist" thread for a bit, as I'm going to be maintaining right at waist for a while. I've not stopped and maintained and cut out the layers (despite saying I was going to do so at shoulder, APL, and BSL!), and the ends are quite scraggly and need trimming up!

I havent a new length photo. My latest is from last summer. I need to take a new one!

ETA: I got this one with a self timer. Despite their trim, my ends still look blah. Oh, well.

Gorgeous Johannah!

I'm going to be doing a cassia treatment tomorrow...I haven't done one in years, and I'm hoping it helps. I figure I'll do one every week or two for awhile, to see if I can get the full benefit of its accumulated strengthening properties. I'm also bemoaning my layers right now. They were beneficial for keeping a decent shape until about waist, I feel, but now they are driving me bonkers. My type hovers between 2B and 2C, and I feel like hip is about the length where one length starts to look really nice with my hair type...the only problem is that I now have layers from APL down that need to be grown out :( That is my other major reason for maintaining at hip...I really want to let the hemline thicken up before moving downwards. Blergh.

This has been such a long journey for me. I reached waist for the first time almost 5 years ago, and have been struggling to gain length ever since. I've always been a super aggressive trimmer, but only because I always felt like my hair really needed it. I used to get partial highlights once a year, which I think contributed to a lot of this. I last highlighted my hair in July of 2012, so to about shoulder is virgin and feels amazing, but I feel like a have a lot of breakage from shoulders down. Live and learn though, eh? For me though, I think the key to healthy hair at TBL will be staying away from any sort of chemical damage. My natural color is so pretty, I don't know why I always thought it needed "brightening". You can't really even see the difference between the virgin and highlighted parts, it just feels and acts totally different.

I haven't been around in awhile as I got sick, then I scalped myself with a dremel (and cried and sobbed and wailed).

My hair is now 1" before hip length and on its way to tailbone! I'll have to get a new pic of it soon, though it's thin and wispy due to a large chunk of it being around bra strap length thanks to said Dremel incident..

It just feels like it's taking so long to get to TB. I trimmed 2" off in October so I'd already be there by now. But I think it really needed a trim since nothing I did to help the ends worked. I'm taking supplements again which always increases my growth rate. But then there's the hem line to stress about. It's always something.......

I'm getting a bit paranoid about my ends. My hair is between waist and hip now and my ends have been feeling a little dry and brittle. I wear my hair up for work in a high plaited pony as it's the only way I can do it (I need to wear a hairnet and a mesh hat). This means I have hair elastics (no metal, though!) tied on the same bits of hair every day, and when I get home I get sick of the work updo thing and wear my hair down. I'm wondering if at this length I will start noticing damage and slow growth (as in more breakage, really). I'm not very good at oiling my hair but I suspect this could be a good time to get started and make sure my ends are a bit more hydrated and strengthened. And maybe, juuuust maybe, I should try experimenting with some interesting updos and buns to make up for the work related hatred of having my hair up and under control, ha ha!

Welcome aboard, matey! ;) We have hard tack for chewing on to pass the time... and at some point we may have to fashion a sail from our sheds. :silly:

I'm having trouble with the idea of maintaining for so long because I want to grow so much longer than TB, but I really think this "No new hairtoys until I've maintained for a year" rule is going to help with that. I can't fit a bun under my hat, sadly. I tried once and my hat just hovered a bit on top of my head and then fell off. I work in a kitchen as a dinner lady so I need the hat to really stick. I've tried wearing it loose under the hair net I also have to wear but it just gets too hot then. So far I think the plaited pony is the only way to go when it comes to work. I think I should get some hair sticks etc for when I'm off from work and try and do something with it that's more interesting, though. That might make me hate updos less, ha ha. I've been looking at all the nice Ficcares etc and thinking that, as the magpie I am, I should maybe invest in something super sparkly for updos so I'll feel like it's fun to wear buns etc when I'm off from work.

I'm taking forever to get to tailbone as I keep trimming nasty ends off - however I think I'm firmly at "butt crack length" at last! Only a couple more inches to true tailbone I believe. Once I hit 38", I'll continue to maintain there through the end of the year to get rid of more ends, and then head toward classic in 2015.

maskedrose, do you got a before and after pic? I still don't have the courage to use it! But it looks lovely!!

I don't, unfortunately. If it did make it any more "golden" it's negligible and visible only to me. I mixed my cassia with catnip tea (which I feel really cut down on the dry feeling that cassia can give for a few days after) and left it to dye release for a couple of hours, then left it on my head for another couple of hours.

It's primarily a conditioning treatment, although it can give a slight golden hue to light blond/grey hair. It may have warmed up my blonde slightly, but my natural color is a warm honey blonde, so I didn't expect to see a big difference.

Have you tried a crown braid or using ribbon in your braid to tie it off. I find it much gentler than hairbands. The crown braid is flat to the head so it will fit well under your hat.

I had a dream last night that I chopped to shoulder O.o I woke up so relieved that it was just a dream. There are days where it is really tempting - I would be rid of all my layers, highlight damage and stress-related thinning, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I think I see it as much thinner/more damaged than it actually is, and because I'm stressed out in other areas of my life I'm fixating on my hair. Funny how that works.

I just had to vent, oof.

It's behentrimonium methosulfate/cetearyl alcohol, you can find it online as conditioner base. It comes in flakes kind of like soy wax pellets, and you make it by dissolving the flakes into a larger amount of water. (I'm using 1 cup water and 3 teaspoons flakes right now)
I should take some pictures of how shiny it makes my hair, I'm not used to having any shine at all!

I think I'm back in the group again! My hair was about 1" from hip when I chopped off several inches of damage from years of color and heat. My chop (August 2013) took me back to being right at BSL. Now, at the start of February, I am pretty sure I have reached waist again! No chopping this time, as the last cut removed the last inches of damaged (pre-lhc) hair. I'm currently planning on a trim in March, but we'll see. I can't find any damage or splits (which I could ALWAYS find before) so I may not trim until I see damage starting to appear.

Anyway here is a pic! I took this on February 1st. I'm all tilt-y and weirdly angled, couldn't seem to be straight to the camera that day. Odd.

Odd.

Wow it was certainly worth cutting out past damage it looks so healthy now I plan on doing the same thing at the end of the year.

You should totally try it its even softer when you do wash it out ;) i mostly put it on from ears down and in dark hair you cant see it when it is braided or up i can heavily oil my hair with any oil and by morning its completely absorbed it thats wavy hair i guess and the fact my hair seems to hate winter.

So I kept it in for about 2 days. I used almond oil for the first time. Normally my hair need AT LEAST 2 hours to fully dry. Today I needed only 45 minutes??!! And it looks like I blow dried/straightened my hair. It's a 1a/1b atm :p Great!

Oooh, looking LONG, Bagginslover! Agree with the rest who say you'll be at TBL by the end of the year. :)

In shower length check news; I'm an inch from BCL when wet!!!
It's so weird, but I'm sure some of you can relate: I really can't wear my hair down in winter because of fuzzy sweaters indoors and dry cold air outdoors, so washing my hair has started to be a real luxury experience! It feels so nice to have it draped all around me, so looking forward to spring when I can let it loose again. :)

I will hopefully be there by xmas, I do need a small trim at the moment, but I'm hoping it'll just be maybe one more after that this year. I barely trim anything, just the very ends, so I'll only lose about half an inch over the year :)

Thank you for the lovely compliments :D

Agreed. Winter time is terrible for loose hair. I look forward to the occasional down and free day when it gets warmer. The nice thing is we'll all be surprised by how our hair feels when it's down again in the spring, because it'll be longer. At least I will be, since I have only worn my hair down once in the last year that I can remember. Exciting that you are nearing BCL.

Bolding mine - oh goodness, this! I keep telling myself that my hair is hibernating. Meanwhile, I daydream of the first day where I can wear a sundress, sandals.... and let my hair down and see how long it feels. :)

Congrats on nearly-BCL, veryhairyfairy! We're just about at the same point in our growth journey. How many inches until you get to TBL? I have about 5 inches and hope that maaayyyyyybeeee I'll make it by New Year's 2015. :)

Bolded made me laugh out loud into my chai! That's a perfect analogy!

I'm at pretty much the exact same distance from TBL (how neat!), and I'm going no trim this year to sprint to TBL, we can do it! :cheer:

It's so wrong of me, I'm going to maintain at TBL, but I really want to be at TBL when bunwaved. Maybe I'll just do this whole year with no trims, and see if I reached that length, and maintain there... (Fairy is ALREADY trying to get extra length beyond TBL when she has promised her monster that she'll maintain him at TBL... shame...)

Ha ha! I've worn it up so much, I really don't remember what it feels like. Now it will brush my elbows, which still feels odd and tickly to me... If I ever feel it against my arm like that I think a spider has crawled onto me, and then I realize it's only my hair, much to my relief.

I think I will go back to quarterly microtrims when I make it to TBL, or in January 2015, whichever comes first. I need to get rid of those pesky layers once and for all.

Haha! This is what I've been eating on average:

7.30: whole grain bread with banana on it (sounds strange, but I like it :p)
10.00: nuts, mostly walnuts
12.00: soup with a lot of greens and bread (baguette)/some whole grain bread with fish (salmon or tuna) and yoghurt/pudding
15.00: some citrus fruit (mostly kiwi) and yoghurt/pudding
18.00: mostly meat with potatoes and greens
20.00: a glass of milk

I drink 2 liter of water throughout the day. I eat something unhealthy around twice a week.

Hi, I am sorry that I have not been writing here for a while, it is a lot around me right now, one of the things is that me and my daughter is mooving together with my boyfriend this weekend to the small farm he is renting (no animals there exept 2 cats) and here is a lot to pack and phonecalls to make :P

there is not much to update besides a lenth shot, since I have not done anything else than just clean it :P.

I would say that's hip YumiYume. If it reaches it, it reaches it. :)

I took a new length shot. This is the first time I' looking at my hair from behind since my chop at Christmas and I'm quite pleased it's still looking decent, other than that gap that appears to be in there which is caused by me not having eyes in my back and not brushing the hair straight (grr!)... and the post-wash flyaways I always get. This was the only good shot of my hair otherwise so I'll let it slide. You can imagine them not being there. Oh and my goal length is around the bottom of my top there. Creeping, creeping...

I had my husband take a picture of my hair this morning to post to this thread and SURPRISE! I'm at hip! I had been worrying that my hair looked a lot thinner than it did 6 months ago, but I think it looks pretty good. This is after sleeping in 2 braids, although my hair was pretty wavy after air drying. I'm surprised at how wavy my hair has gotten as it has gotten longer. I'm sticking with my CWC method. I have found that I need to do more SMT's with my hair at this length, and my usual buns are not working as well anymore. I did get 1/2" trimmed last week and am really thankful I didn't trim more than that. I have been keeping a U-shape hemline, but have been thinking about doing a straight hemline...what do you think? I always wear my hair up, and my favorite buns are the lazy wrap, nautilus, and the Gibraltar. I need some new buns to try at this length. I have found that forks work better for me now instead of sticks. I still love my ficcare's too. The next hair toy I want to get is a flexi-8 for 1/2 ups :) I have recently started braiding my hair for sleep, and have found that minimizing tangling. As for buns, have you tried the disc bun? Its one of my favorites!

I've tried that one before and loved it, but had forgotten about it! I think that bun will let me still be able to use my sticks with them holding pretty well, too! Thank you, Crumpet!

Ok I'm in  I've been at waist for a few months. I'm so thankful I have ya'll for inspiration and encouragement to keep growing and to keep my hair healthy! XOXO

Congratulations! Nice surprise!

The boring thing about reaching your goal length is that you don't really have a reason to do length shots anymore. But I went swimming today and took the opportunity to use the sauna time to let my hair soak in conditioner, and my hair is feeling super nice now that it's almost dry (ridiculously soft and slippery), so - a just-because shot! I'd guess I'm about an inch or so from tailbone?

Ack! I feel like I'm stalled at waist. I've been microtrimming so there's good reason for that, but I've only been trimming about 0.25-0.5 in every two months. Maybe my hair isn't growing much in the winter? Or maybe its my waves causing problems? Whatever it is, its making me cranky!

Gorgeous shine and length, nuvola!

It looks like you're almost hip, alishaxmarie, and what a wonderful texture (envious)!

In length news: I took some measurements yesterday and it looks like I only have 3-4" until tailbone! I'm at ~34.5", and TBL is ~37 or 38" (never trust myself with measuring, so all measurements should be taken as estimates). I started drinking protein shakes yesterday, and I'm hoping the extra 40 grams a day will all go to my hair.

Where's everyone at length and measurement wise?

LauraLongLocks
March 9th, 2014, 09:30 AM
I'm at 30.25" which is waist+ for me. Next marker is hip. Sometimes when I measure to see how far I have to go, I get 32" and sometimes 34". That's a big difference!

What do I do for my hemline respectively my hair. Ummmm I comb it when it's wet :p I do a prewash for several hours (mostly oil and sheabutter), wash it twice a week and use shampoo bars every few times. I mostly wear buns, also at night.

I don't measure. I never know what to do with my waves because they are inconsistent in their waviness. I'm bouncing around waist, but I think I can reach hip by the end of the year, even with bi-monthly microtrims. I envy people who can just go for length. My hair seems to love the microtrims. It looks a lot healthier and behaves better now.

Yeah, I have a similar problem, it's why I don't really go by measurements. It's never off by more than an inch, but I almost ALWAYS get consistently different measurements. I only measure once or twice a year just to see what vague area I MAY be in, lol. For me it's all about the visual length, anyway.

Well, I would say in the second picture hip is midway between the dip (smallest part) of your waist and the waistband of your pants. I think here we call hip at the top of the bone that makes your hips swell out. How I found it was to press my fingers into my side right below my waist and just keep going until I hit bone. :)

I'm at ~35.5", which for me is Hip+/almost BCL, BCL is ~36" on me. I have roughly 2.5" to go until TBL, which is around 38" on me.

I was going to wait until I was past hip to trim, but I got fed up with my hemline the other night. I trimmed about an inch and a half from the longest part of my V, and am now slightly past waist again. It's amazing how much better my hemline looks/feels though! Love it. I was planning on trimming once this summer, but we'll see how the hem holds up...I may wait until autumn. I still should be between hip and BCL by the end of the year.

Seriously. I'm waist length, and it looks short to me. Looks no longer than it did when it was shoulder length. So now I've changed from TBL to classic as my goal.

I know this comment was a long time ago, but I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. I used to think waist length hair was SO long, when I first started growing my hair from pixie, and now it feels like it won't truly be "long" until tailbone at least.

OMG! I read this and I was like I totally agree with this , and i'll never go shorter than hip. I'm almost fully at hip but i'm waiting for a thicker hemline and won't call it until it looks right to me. I felt like waist length was sort of a relief when it comes to making updos, but I personally felt limited with styles.... Now that my hair is past waist I can finally do a braided nautilus though! Mind you it's not an impressive size yet but it sure makes it nice to have options. I have a friend who only plans to stick at waist and I was like I'd personally go insane sticking to just one length. Especially, if I can't do my dream bun then i'm gonna keep growing until I can do almost every type of updo. I find that the longer my hair gets the easier my life is when it comes to making updos that lasts all day like a rock (thanks to the help of my Ficcares of course:rolling:). I can just bun and ignore and have pretty hair toys to keep my mind occupied while I just let my hair grow.

Right? Now that I'm finally past waist length, I never (well, hardly ever) miss having genuinely short hair. I don't intend to really cut it ever again (aside from maintenance trims). Yup, I love my long hair. I've had every length from a short pixie (shaved in the back of my head and super short on top) to where I am now, and this is the best so far. I feel, however, that the best is yet to come.

I think having fun hair toys, and knowing lots of various ways to wear long hair makes it fun. If it just hangs there all the time, in the way, then it's not very much fun. It can get boring and annoying. That's how I found LHC... I was looking for long hair styles to give my hair some variety. I found it, and now I know more than 50 styles and probably several variations of each of my styles. It's really enjoyable. When I go to my physical therapy appointments, my PT always notices what style I have it in and compliments me on it. It's so much fun.

I am just starting to brush hip. I've taken a few pictures right after washing, and my hemline is starting to look a little thin.

I spent almost 2 hours doing S&D on Friday. I had a trim in December, but only had 1/2 inch taken off after a full year of no trims. I started catnip rinses about 2 weeks ago, so I'm hoping that it starts to help with my split ends. Do you think I should just bite the bullet and get another small trim?

wildkratt
March 19th, 2014, 08:05 PM
^As painstaking as it sounds, I suggest that you set aside a half hour and manually go through your hair in sections to cut split ends if you want to save length. I do S&Ds at least once a week because I hate having to trim extra hair. BTW your hair looks so smooth and silkyyyyy. :o

Today I blowdried my hair straight for the first time in two months. (Otherwise I do mostly buns and the occasional naturally wurly ponytail or braid.) Everyone at school and even random strangers were completely enamored of it; they wanted to touch my hair and feel its thickness and length. All my friends said they remembered when my hair was shoulder length a little over 2 years ago,and now it's at my butt.:D They all want to know my "secrets" but I honestly think it's just genetics and benign neglect. I'm only 1-2 inches shy of tailbone (which is 39"ish on me). Can't wait!

Count me in the camp of feeling short. I, too, thought that waist length hair was SOO long (though it still looks long to me on other people), but then I reached it and I could still only do a cinnabun. I went through a phase where I felt like my hip length hair was finally 'long', but now I have almost BCL and it feels kind of short!

Hopefully spending 2015 at tailbone length will help me get used to it, and seeing it as long.

Welcome, Tini! :flower: You're definitely brushing waist, one more month and you should be able to call it. And lovely color! Looks like a rich honey brown with hints of chocolate... delicious! :D

Yep, I'm in the same "it feels short" boat. My original goal was hip or rather "butt dimples" length which is just an inch below hip. Well now I'm past that, a bit more than inch from BCL and it still feels short. Yes on others this would be quite long hair but not on me. I can start seeing how it might be longish now, but I don't think it will be properly long until I hit TBL, if even then. Right now my goal is between TBL and classic, but we will see if I'm going to go beyond if my hair lets me. I'll make a good one year stop at my current goal though to get rid of the rest of my layers and dye + dye damage.

Oh man! I'm so glad we're all in the same boat! I'm shooting for TBL and will maintain there before going on to classic.

I'm stuck in the "spring thinking" of wanting layers and a U hemline, I see all those pinterest girls with their beachy waves and shimmering hair and think "I could have that! if only I had layers!" and then I remind myself I'm just now finishing growing OUT layers!

Also, I get my hair trimmed by my auntie, and she does a stellar job, but as I get longer I want to be able to say " just trim to tailbone" but I'm not sure how to explain it, or point it out, if I'm sitting in a chair how will she know where my bum is!

Welcome, Tini! :flower: You're definitely brushing waist, one more month and you should be able to call it. And lovely color! Looks like a rich honey brown with hints of chocolate... delicious! :D Reminds me of a comment one of my friends said on FB after seeing a pic of my hair in a cameo bun. He said it was pretty, but now he was getting hungry for donuts for some reason, lol!

All one length hair is pretty, too. Just go and find pictures like that instead for your inspiration. You may have to stand up to get your trim. On my body, TBL is about wrist length.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one with hair dysmortia I see bsl hair on others and think it's so long compared to mine when it's a inch past hip wavy  Me, too! I see hair that is my length or shorter and think it's so long and pretty, but then I remember that mine is even longer (but not wavy).

Lovely manes everyone! See you later :) It's fun to look ahead and dream. Funny how we're all saying our hair isn't long enough, and others who are yet to be this long are dreaming of our length. :)

Sounds like we're all having a grand maintenance party at TBL. What are we bringing? I've got the protein shakes. Who is bringing the peanut butter? How about some chocolate and cheese? :cheese:

I had a moment today during which I nearly trimmed my hair, although I am trying to hold out until May 1. I'm keen to get rid of my layers and they drive me nuts because they take away so much thickness. I wouldn't mind them if they weren't quite so over the top!

Anyway, I bunned up and walked away from the scissors...I'm still a bit tempted though!

Mine bother me, too, but I promised myself no trims until January, so that's what I'm doing. Can't wait to take a whole INCH in January, though! :) I'll be that much closer to ridding myself of those annoying pesky layers.

I'm somewhere between hip and tailbone... and right now the "plan" is to maintain at tailbone until my layers grow out (my shortest layer is somewhere around my waist). However, being that I don't like taking off more than an inch at a time and I don't trim often, if it ends up getting longer than TB, I don't mind.

Count me in on the maintenance party! I'll bring cake pops. :)

Try sectioning your hair and doing your bun with the top half and a cameo braid around it with your bottom half. That way your bun doesn't pull as much, because it's not as heavy. I'm starting to prefer mine sectioned with some styles, too, because I get "hot spots" with certain styles.

I'll bring the home-made, whole wheat, butter coated soft pretzels (my new specialty, I've been proposed to by people eating them lol)! :p

I think after this year of no trims, I may maintain at TBL for at least a year and a half (but maybe as much as 3 years). There's so much health and thickness ALLL the way up at APL/BSL and I've love to have that at my ends someday. It took me 2.5 years (roughly) to get to this length from BSL, and I think I could maintain that long if I was seeing the thickness, wave, shine, and health travel downward.

Your pretzels sound lovely! Also, I was just wondering whether I could grow to TBL (about 4 more inches for me), then maintain there until my layers are grown out - I estimate that would take just under a year at TBL. I was griping to myself about all that time when I could be growing until I found your post. I guess if you can handle three years of maintaining, I can handle one!

Seconding LLL's suggestion. Also, braided buns can be really helpful since the 'balance' the hair out well. I'm wearing a braided nautalis today and wondering why I don't do it more often myself!

LLL - thanks for the support! When I first joined the LHC, I was surprised by all of the people who had a hard time not trimming...and then, as I got increasingly annoyed by my layers, I began to understand...and then experience it myself. I'm trying to make it until at least mid-April (when I have an important event) without any micro-trims. I know its not far away.

Cheese and some of those amazing pretzels will make the wait easier!

Yesterday my head was sore from wearing a too-tight bun for too long, so I put it in a French braid, and later on I put the braid in a lazy wrap. I've never done that before and was quite surprised at how much of a difference it made.

Goodness, I'd love to see my braid taper improve, as well! There's something disconcerting about starting a braid that's 2" around, and ending with one that's 1/2".
I think we should all take before and after maintenance photos, it would be super motivational.

I don't think I'm going to wait at TBL for my APL hairs to fully catch up, but they should work their way down a little further, maybe to MBL or so before I continue growing full speed to classic. Thanks again about the style, and the explanation. <blushing>

I, too, was going to maintain at waist, but then I got onto the no trim 2014 challenge, and well, I'm not trimming this year. So, plans got changed around. One inch is coming off in January, and then I'll evaluate what I want to do next. I'm thinking full speed ahead to TBL and then maintain, or cut half my growth so I can keep growing while making regular improvements in allowing my slower growing hair to catch up and join the hemline party.

Here's where my hair is now -- I'm never sure of the length due to my waves. The waves are less in this picture but my layers have decided to migrate to my right shoulder...I'm not missing hair in that one spot only!

Do you all think I should trim it more aggressively than I have? I don't think it looks terribly great right now.

Crumpet, I don't think your ends looks that thin. I think probably the black shirt is making it look thinner than it is. I know some days my ends look much thinner than yours and others they look thick like they do in my sig, all depending on the way my hair decides to lay that day. Also I noticed that product build up tends to exacerbate the thinness of my ends, cause they clump together instead of fluffing out. but at the end of the day what matter is whether you can live with the way your hair is or not. IMO your ends look nice.

@dovetail I actually am a compusive s&d'er. (Especially in church!) However, I usually don't have the right scissors nearby and am probably causing more problems than helping! My husband paid for a trip to a salon about 3 years ago for my birthday and the lady left the bleach on the highlights way too long and destroyed my hair! That is when I joined LHC, swore off salons, and bought some henna! I love my henna hair but the bleached highlight still looked bad, so, I razored them out! Been growing ever since! When I get to tb, I may just start trimming all that damaged hair... maybe...

Or at least it worked well enough for the first time. Now to practice hair taping...

I started using Tsubaki Shining S+H and I love it so far. I might try the Damaged Care.... I had a massive S+D the past two days. My ends are thinning :( but I don't want to do any trims yet. So I hope the ends still look presentable!

Your hair looks lovely, Crumpet :) Ends doesn't look thin at all. Mine is so much tapered it looks pathetically thin. I'm growing out layers, it will take years for all my hairs to be at the same length :(

So as pass waist and keep going I've been able to do more buns and better versions of some of my existing ones. Downside- I've noticed that some of my forks are getting to small! I've never outgrown a hair toy yet. While exciting, the idea of not using them or swapping them is kind of a bummer.

I think your natural taper is really lovely, heartgoesboom, and it looks so long and shiny! Can I ask what kind of hemline you have?

Blegh, I've gotten into the bad habit of checking my length each time I'm washing my hair now... bad fairy! It was just so wonderful to discover that sopping wet I'm BCL... but I have to remember that I won't really be there with dry hair for another few months.

I just need to keep drinking my protein shakes and putting it up. I still have an entire 6 weeks until I'm 'allowed' (by myself) to take a new length shot. *insert impatient Sonic foot tap with folded arms*

Hello everyone!

Tonight I decided to take a few photos and discovered I'm farther along than I thought. Seems that I'm already at waist level. Before tonight I've never really looked at my hair, except when I've checked braid quality in the mirror, etc. and quick checks when I've trimmed the ends. Like some of you have mentioned, I also don't feel like my hair is all that long. So.... I'm going to keep going!

I'm confused on the hip level, but I'm thinking I have about 5" until BCL. Maybe 7" to tbl.

After spending about a week lurking around the boards, I've decided that the best thing I can do for my hair is to do something different with it. Most days I put the front up in a jaw clip. This is causing little hairs to break off on my crown. Also my sides seem to have stunted growth. The longest hair above my ears is about APL (ragged, almost frizzy too). Might be because for many years my objective with braids and ponies were to give myself a face lift in the process. I can do a messy scrunchie bun and be satisfied now :)

*peeks in* Hello!

I used to be a regular in this thread a few years ago, and I was getting so so close to tailbone... but then I got pregnant, and at 7 months along I decided to chop it all back off to APL. I wasn't sure I'd find the time to look after it with a newborn. It turned out to be a good plan, honestly, as my post partum shed was freaking INSANE... I shed a 2 cm strip around my whole hair line and felt like my house was filled with hair even at the length I was. I had tennis-ball-sized hair mats coming out of my brush. So uncool. D:

So now it's been 2 1/2 years since my last trim, and I'm back to the same length I was before the chop, maybe the tiniest bit longer. And this time there will be no excuses: I am going to pass tailbone, dammit! :P I have a trim booked in finally this week and I can't let myself get carried away. Which is a minor challenge, because honestly I've been struggling with my hair recently. It's so hard to get it looking presentable.

I wear a bun every day but it would be fun to have a ponytail once in a while, or go totally crazy with a half up... but I just can't. I have reasonably thick hair (~3.5"), but the hairs themselves are very fine, wavy-but-not-wavy-enough-to-be-waves, floaty and flyaway. The slightest breath of wind and it's a huge, frizzy mess. If I comb it, it transforms into a triangular panel of fluff, but if I don't comb it, it looks messy and tangles really easily. The shed hairs have now grown back into weird, uneven APL/BSL-ish layers (depending on which part of my hairline they're growing from), so even plaits and buns can be pretty messy.

I'm using a lot of the tips and tricks I picked up the first time around here (oiling the length, cold water rinses, CWC, scalp washes, no heat, protective styles etc), and my hair is soft and healthy. But I need some hair-prettifying witchcraft and maybe a specific product recommendation or two so I can show it off once in a while... I'm thinking a good leave in conditioner could help? Are there any mousses around that work for those of us without 'proper' waves?

Thanks so much for having me... and for wading through my little wall of text!

Anyway, here's my 'journey' in pictures:-

You're hair is even prettier and healthier than the first time around! And you have beautiful eyes if you don't mind me saying so (I mean I should be focusing on your hair of course). Honestly, you scared me about having future children just now! hahaha but no really, that shedding sounds awfully scary. A lot of users use aloe vera gel (clear kind, no alcohol) but I'm not really sure how much it can encourage one's waves  You mentioned scalp washes so I'm assuming you try to stretch washes to an extent and CO-washing would be a good way to do that since it gently cleanses and brings out waves according to a heck-of-a-lot of people (it is part of the Curly Girl method afterall). Braid or bun waves and heat-free curling methods could give you the change in texture you're looking for as well(maybe)? If your hair is just dry you could try an SMT (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=128&p=1423&viewfull=1#post1423). If your hair has just been out of whack lately then I would sugest that you clarify your hair. You can get a special clarifying shampoo for this or you can add some baking soda to a handful of your current shampoo. Otherwise, a small trim would probably do the trick without all the other fuss! Fresh ends are always a treat :)

Aww thank you alishaxmarie :) I think my eyes are a bit more bog-standard blue than they look there... I just have a lot of white in them so they pick up the colours I'm wearing. XD
I stretch washes as much as I can, but I have to wash at least twice a week (I am an oil slick after 2.5 days, but I just stick with it an extra day... the oil-slick tendency also means CO was out for me, too. I just get sooo greasy without suds, haha!)
I'm super curious about the aloe gel and SMT, will definitely give it a go! Anything that will help my hair stick together without clumping would help the frizzies calm down, I think. And a trim is DEFINITELY in order. Thanks for the ideas :)

At the risk of terrifying you even further regarding shedding, yeah, it wasn't pretty:

September-ish 2012?

I think I was towards the worse end of the scale but by no means unusually bad... but then, some women get really very little, like maybe 1-2% of their hair volume and that's it. You could be one of the lucky ones!

I'm kicking myself, I don't think I took any photos of my post partum hair loss with baby no.2. I'll have to look...think it was just about as extreme as post partum hair loss gets. With my first I didn't even notice until looking at photos, that I'd receded a cm or so all round.

I also have a ton of frizz now, but I always do! The new growth doesn't help though, I tried an updo that involves a braid around my head yesterday, there was just frizz spiking out everywhere! I was like a jinny-jo! Still, don't let it scare you because it's totally worth it, and mildly entertaining - you've gotta laugh at yourself!

My hair has been growing slowly, but steadily since my tiny trim in January, and I'm at now at tailbone when wet and "can I please call this tailbone" when dry.
Still have quite a bit to go before I'm solid tailbone when dry, but I'm getting there! Hands are placed around mid-butt, the longest bits of hair just reaches my hands.

Welcome, Allie_snowflake, it looks like you are solidly waist! If you think waist length feels short, wait until the LHC-itis catches you off guard and you find yourself dreaming of floor length locks... ;)

Welcome back, Jomo! :) I don't have any advice because I still haven't found a way to wear my hair down and have it look nice for a long time. Honestly, your latest length shot looks better than I can ever hope for!
One thing that's been working extra well for me is catnip tea as my styling spray instead of water. I'm getting more shine and a little bit less frizz (but I never wear my hair down, so who knows?). I can link you to my method if you're interested. :)

I saw your latest length shot, and you are definitely making both length and end-improving progress, bunzfan! :cheer:

Well, I have finally reached jeans-top-hip-ish-length. I have been trimming regularly this year and while my ends look better than ever, I am finding that my length simply hasn't budged. I've been at 33 inches all year. It's growing a tiny amount because I've gotten several half inch trims without losing length, but I'm wondering if it's time to stop trimming for a while. The problem is, I used to never trim and my hair ended up frizzy and terrible looking (see album for details). How many of you trim less than twice a year? Has it helped your growth? I'd provide an updated picture in the album but I fail utterly at taking my own length shots and I never remember when my husband is home.

You all have such beautiful hair! :thud:

I guess count me in for the maintenance party in this thread... I hit TBL a while ago, but was a bit overzealous with trims and am probably more like BCL at the moment. This is roughly my goal length. I'm a little curious about trying for classic again, but I'd rather get rid of the velcro ends first and hopefully get some new growth catching up... Not that I mind taper, as I think it helps my buns stay up better, but it just makes it so hard to find split ends! Plus, I'm about to start grad school, so I figure I should be working on getting my hair to the most benign-neglect-able state possible! :p

Think I will try for a proper length shot soon. I haven't had one since the beginning of last year, when I first hit hip.

I think BCL is unique in that I need nice ends... Because if they're rough, they dig into and irritate my, um, BC...
