After biting the bullet in Febuary and getting my hip length chopped back up to about waist length to get rid of old damage, I'm going for hip/tailbone by Christmas. Got a ways to go yet, annoyingly.

I arrived at hip not too long ago, and I'm hoping to be at tailbone around December! If I get there before the end of the year, even better :)

cute hair, btw im not even sure the chair thing is true. I tried it and it was inches below tailbone. Then i thought about it and realized if you have 'padding' in the butt/thigh area then surely that would add inches between your tailbone and the chair. idk maybe some people sit weird and it works. I measured from front hairline to chair and it was an inch or so from classic length standing.
your hair looks to be brushing bcl
Hahahah..! Then that must be it! I sure have 'padding' over there :P. Anyways, I'll just wait to call it tailbone since I'm mantaining for a while to grow out of some bleaching damage so I'm not really in a hurry and probably would prefer to have a thicker tailbone than to have it sooner. But yeah...that ******n padding surely adds some inches :p

I agree, I bet it would be BCL without the waves (how are they so even? you're so lucky, my waves have a distinct "slept in a bush" quality to them )
I've just hit "can I call this hip" when my hair is wet yay! I was hoping to be brushing classic by the end of the year but I had to trim a few inches and had a stall (and a shed :( ), so I'm hoping for BCL at least by new years.
Also, Dorothy, I don't think you need to cut back as far as waist, my ends looked very similar to yours at the beginning of the year and a 2" trim turned them blunt. I wish I had your pretty copper colour, it's gorgeous!
Well thanks, but mine don't have an even pattern at all, at least not naturally, and that's something I've complained about a couple of times here/to relatives and such, if I want it to be relatively calm I bun it for almost the whole day, say from 7am until it's afternoon and it stays almost straight, also, braiding after oiling a bit...specially if you braid it as soon as it's dry/for sleep it will be more manageable and have a more defined pattern

 Hi fellow longhairs!
I've spent the better part of an hour trying to locate the article showing the "Hair Length Milestones" to no avail. I don't know what length to call my hair, lol. It's past hip but not quite to the crack in my butt. Can any of you help me? Can anyone give me a link to the article? Thanks in advance ;)

Well I'd call the hair on your pic waist. a couple inches longer would be hip...
and the only advice to know if it's tailbone I've received is that it would brush the surface of the chair if you were seated...if you have some junk in the...well, that, like me it would add extra inches...so maybe a bit shorter...
I don't even know where classic is...my butt is quite big so I still have some time before it reaches the part where my butt meets my thigh :P

BCL is where your, ahem...butt crack starts. Your tailbone is generally about an inch or so past where your crack starts. Classic (I believe) is when the length of you hair is longer than your actual rear end, so between your butt and upper thigh.

Aw, thank you! I just got lucky in the genetic lottery. Now if only the waves would clump properly and not separate into individual hairs that floated off in individual directions! Oh well, one day I'll figure out that, too.

My longest strands I think hit waist, hopefully I will be here soon. I'm giving the Mane 'N Tale Deep Moisturizing Conditioner, hopefully My pregnancy will boost my hair growth too, if I could get to 32" by October when the baby arrives that would be awesome. I've been so-so about putting my hair up, but I have decided not to trim but only S&D until the baby comes too.

Hey, thanks for the tip on my clickable photo, I used photobucket this time instead of image code and that is nice. Although you can see all my greys wandering around. In fact everything that is red is henna'd white hair. It's much darker underneath.
I loved the red curls too. I'm going to be at fingertip when my hair touches the chair, I think, given how tall my butt is. I prefer to think of it as "tall".

Ooow. I wish you lots of aloe. I mentioned that I'm going to be buying a new car recently and someone said, "You should get a convertible!" I looked at them like they were crazy, because obviously they were. Pale skin and convertibles don't get along, especially in the desert. I got cheated out of the beautiful red hair though, and just got the skin and freckles.

In reference to the "where is tailbone?" business a few posts back, I thought that tailbone length referred to the hair reaching down to the end of the tailbone, but I have also heard of the sitting-and-hair-reaches-floor definition, as well as some others. Would a few more of you beloveds chime in on your definition of tailbone?
I am sure that this has been discussed countless times in past threads, but it is difficult to find for some reason! :(

As the tailbone may be a bit differently situated from person to person and you can't really see or feel it, I gave up this length mark :p Even when I hurt my tailbone badly about a year ago, I still wasn't sure what hair length matches it, even though it hurt like hell! So, I'm just past hip bone length and heading to classic :D

I must be an evolutionary throwback. While I don't have a tail, I definitely CAN feel my tailbone. It is about 1 1/2" below BCL for me. I have a rather long pelvis and short torso, so classic will be a long time coming.

WSL, I think the length you're at now has a decent amount of possible updos. Have you gained in wear-downability?
So, I had a great hair day, that turned into a good day in general, and I feel like sharing it with you all. :p Here's a picture of today's curls after I washed them last night. Definitely creeping up to hip.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4274&d=1368121816
I wore it down for most of the day, and we went to a fair. Went on a few rides, and wow my throat is still hoarse from yelling. My hair was brushing my elbows all day as I walked and I really felt like it was long, which was nice. And then... I found a stand where they were selling this little gem:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4273&d=1368121594
So of course I bought it, because I've never seen a hairstick for sale before anywhere except online, unless you count the plastic supermarket things which I don't, and this one was cheap for such a lovely thing (5 euro, when I paid my beloved hair forks three times that at another fair (I can never seem to find decent hairtoys anywhere else)).
Then further along I found a stand with a woman from Vietnam selling things. She was adorable, chatted to my father in Vietnamese for a bit while I looked around. Of course my eyes were immediately drawn to the chopsticks (they were gorgeous and would have made amazing hairsticks), and right above the chopsticks I found this:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4272&d=1368121576
A Kenyan woman from the next stand over came up to me and pulled my hair back into this bun (I have no idea what it is, but it holds well and my mother loves it), weaved the stick through (I've never had anyone touch my hair so gently) and when I asked my mother: "So, does it look good?" she said "Yes, you're keeping it, see, I've already paid, you can't say no, no way are you leaving this behind."
So, my first two hairsticks, one wooden and one made of horn, both much cheaper than I ever thought I'd pay for a hair toy. I'm thrilled. They're somewhat thinner than I thought would be ideal, but the one I have on right now is holding really well so I think it'll be fine.
I'm having fuzzy "I love my hair" feels right now, please forgive the long post. :p I promise it won't become a regular occurence.
I've been thinking of a trim -- maybe something like two inches --, but I'm not sure yet, and looking at that picture above I can't help but think "Nooo." I have many splits. But, really, I'm enjoying the length way too much.

I might join this thread cause I have been at waist for a while now.. I have been lurking here long but just haven't posted, and there's so many beautiful inspirational photos in this thread! :applause
My hair is still heavily layered, kind of V-shape although I'm trying to gradually trim it more like U-shape.. It just has to grow more first :P I'm a little confused now because I'm not sure what exactly is considered hip length or how much I still have to get there.. I know that solid hip for me takes ages cause the shortest layers are at BSL length. In this picture my pants are slightly above tailbone. I apologize the awkward photo with pixelating and too little clothing, just wanted to find my waist! :f

I haven't felt much like photo's lately. My second layer is just touching my chair. Another month or so should be officially tailbone. My canopy layer had a growth spurt and is only 1 1/2 inches from TBL. I still have my little square at the top of my head which is just at waist, the front sides which are grazing bcl and my fringe which is just at waist. At least now all my layers are waist and below. Still a ways to go for full TBL.

hime...I think I count hip a bit differently than others here, I go by my actual hip bones, the little knobby things that protrude in front, rather than the rounded fleshy part on the sides, mainly because, depending on my current weight, the "fleshy" hip can change quite a bit on me. By my definition you still have a couple inches to go. But I think it is up to personal interpretation a bit.

Hi all! I haven't checked in here in a while. WSL! What a chop! I'm glad you're much happier with more manageability. It looks great :D. I was at hip for a couple days a few weeks ago. A few of you probably may still consider me at hip.. but I don't.. Anyway, I took a length shot and did not like what I saw. My V hem was WAY too V for me. It made my hair look thin.. imco (in my crazy opinion) so I chopped off two inches, doing a softer V and am very happy with it now (especially after taking a new length shot). Bad news is... I'm two inches further away from TBL! Ahhh. Oh well. Still truckin' along...

Sounds like you're much happier. I'm glad, coz you've been sounding pretty miserable.
As far as updos go, I think our length is fairly similar, and if I'm doing a bun, it's a Celtic knot or some kind of braided bun. Braided cinnabun, ovalbun, and various infinity variants like Bweeta's buns or Casey's romantic braided updo all work. Dunno how much that will help tho since buns definitely aren't my first pick, and usually I go for braids and I know you're the opposite.
WaitingSoLong
May 11th, 2013, 07:10 AM
What kind of braids do you like torrilin?
torrilin
May 11th, 2013, 08:26 AM
I usually do plain ones. English is the default, tho I do make a point of using the T part shape that gets the braid to lie closer to my head. I've been working on doing Dutch direction braids tho, since options are good. Current braid is a real Dutch braid, not just Dutch direction. On me actual Dutch braids are the slithery ones, and French doesn't slither.
Single looks better to me, twin is easier to do updos with. I think a lot of that is that folded braids just don't want to stay folded on me. It *should* in theory be a perfectly good updo, and in practice... total escape artist scene. Tucked French braids do better, but I've pretty solidly outgrown them at this length. Stuff that's based on twin braids tends to be pretty flexible about how long the braids can get and there's usually a way to use U shaped pins to kind of "sew" the style together.
Plain braids are least likely to have issues where a strand of hair is tighter than the rest and pulling (for me... mileage varies on this). Lace braids are next best, and full on French or Dutch are most likely to have pulling issues. But I wear braids so much of the time that I just don't have this problem pop up a lot. I have no idea how many times I've braided my hair, but it's a lot (I learned to braid my own hair in high school, and it's been a favorite style ever since) and I don't really have to think about keeping the tension even. I'm sure all that practice has helped.

Of course, when I get to tailbone I'm just going to be wondering "When will I hit Classic?" but for right now I'm pretty stoked to be at hip.

Beautiful hair, everyone! All your lovely pictures make me ashamed to post my own photo...
I've been in this thread for a year now since I reached waist and been hovering around hip since November, but cutting off nearly all the growth since then in my attempt to get rid of my layers. I took a length shot today to see how much long do I have until BCL which is my next mini goal. TBL is an inch or two below that, but as many have noticed, it's hard to determine. This picture shows that there's still a few inches to go until BCL. I might be able to get there by the end of the year if I didn't trim, but as you can see there's still a lot of layers to get rid of and I need those trims. The evil frizz on the bottom half appeared because of desperately trying to brush my hair straight with some leave-in after it had been braided for the day... note to self, don't do that again... My hair doesn't feel that frizzy and it's actually quite soft. An SMT probably wouldn't hurt though. I'll do that tomorrow.
I am also tempted to cut a few inches off in a few months so that I would be able to grow again without constant monthly small trims where I don't seem to gain any length but don't seem to get much improvement in the layers department either. My ends don't feel as thin as they look on the photo, but I guess they are (here's a photo (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4094&d=1366993287) of my monthly trims, hair against different color shirt). I didn't quite choose the right color top as my hair in the shade looks almost exactly the same color as it does. This photo does not make me very happy about my hair and I've been feeling a little bummed about the thinness of the ends for a few months now. Even though I'd hate having shorter hair than hip length again I think I would like having fresh more blunt ends. I wouldn't want to go shorter than waist length though. We will have a photoshoot where I'm playing a mermaid sometime in June or July so I've been postponing the cut. I would like to have as long hair as possible for the photoshoot.
Anyway, I'm rambling. Here's the photo. Opinions would be highly appreciated. :)

Going by your other pics I don't think your hair is as thin on the ends as it seems in the photo above. I really think it is ok, how short are the layers still left? I cannot see them.

I think most of them in the back are about BSL/waist down, but on the sides (or what used to be face framing layers) there's increasing layers that go all the way from APL and down creating the V or U hemline appearance. Those shortest face framing layers used to be cheek length a year and a half ago. So basically there's no layers shorter than APL. At BSL the hair is pretty much what I would call non-layered.
And I think you're right and I should probably take a photo with something else on so that the thinness wouldn't look as bad as I kind of know it's not, but when I look at that photo it looks kind of sad. Maybe another photo would make me feel a bit better.

Oclean, I think you have mermaid hair. I think the frizziness is making the ends look thinner than they actually are. Micro-trimming feels like a thankless task, but it does work. It just takes longer. If the ends are healthy, I wouldn't worry about cutting a whole lot off. Even if a little bit of fairy-tale ends isn't what you're going for (I have them a bit and it's not what I want, but I'm micro-trimming until the length thickens up), it still looks really nice if it's healthy, especially on below-waist-length hair. If the layers are a pain and you want to get rid of them, then go ahead and cut, but don't let your hair bum you out. It looks pretty! And mermaid-ish!

:agree: I agree that your hair looks completely different in the other photos. I think it's a good idea that you are taking photos when you microtrim because eventually you'll see progress.

Thanks for your comments, girls! Since my last trim last month where I cut off 0.7 inches (1.8 cm) I've actually felt that my ends thickened up a bit. The ends are no longer just some strands, they actually form a tiny somewhat blunt tassel when I braid. I've only microtrimmed 1.7 inches (4.4 cm) since November but I guess when I compare to what it was before I started trimming. I guess I was just that picture that made me think my hair was in worse condition than it was.
I think I figured out what to do now. I will not do my monthly trims before the pictures are taken and then I'll cut some amount off, but not shoter than to hip hopefully. I will see about that when the time comes. That way I get to grow longer for the picture and then I won't have to cut my hair too short after it. Since my hair isn't actually in bad condition so that I would need trims, I don't need to do them right now. I can wait a few months. It's just all in my head.
So thanks for the consolation you all. I now feel a bit better and I guess there's no other way than up. :)

I think you should leave your hair alone for a while. I am also growing out layers. I have noticed that my hair sort of goes in cycles. It will gain and stall gain and stall. Then I started noticing the shedding cycle affected my gains. It was frustrating but by the years end I had gained 5 inches in most area's. Be patient and only trim your splits if you have them. Maybe limit working on layers, if you must, to once or no more than twice a year. You may get surprises. My layers really have shown me how erratic my growth can be but over all making good annual gains.

Soooo.... Basically, I was not thinking about my hair much lately, and last night I was at the Nights of Museum fest, so this picture of me was taken (that's at the Video games of 80's installation), and I realized that maybe I don't have so much to wait until I get to TB!

Thanks for your advice and I think you might be right. I'll not trim for a few months and just keep S&Ding it if it starts to feel nasty to me. Atleast that way I get to gain length and The absolute worst thinness from my hair has already gone thanks to half a year of monthly trimming. Now there's just... normal layers left.

I have arrived~! :happydance:
I'm now at WL and I feel like I've finally reached my first actually long milestone.
I'm starting to see more and more the difficulties in taming very fine long hair so you don't have an aura of little strands being carried around by the slightest movement of air but I'm also really happy with the condition my hair's in. I S&D really thoroughly every other day but I've only found 2 tiny splits in the last 6 months I've been doing it so I'm going to press on and head for hip and TBL.
I can't wait.
I trust everyone else is doing well on their journey to TBL in this thread

Congrats! I'm actually finding that my fine hair behaves much better the longer it is. Once it started getting past waist, it was so much easier to handle. I still get a few escapee wispy strands, but at least they're no longer going up my nose or in my mouth anymore, they just kind of float around my elbows.
Also, that's awesome on the condition of your hair! I don't know if I'll ever go 6 months with only 2 splits, but you give me hope!

Wearing hear down in breezey conditions is becoming problematic. A gust of wind blew all my hair forward and to the side, i went to brush it away and out of my face but the ends wrapped around my arm. Other times my hair will blow out to the sides, a good foot and a half flying around.

I have an appointment for a trim tomorrow... I've been considering it for nearly a month, so the two-week rule has definitely been respected, and yet I'm still uneasy about it. I just like my hair too much.
The first problem is that I haven't had my hair cut by someone else since October 2011... The last two times I went to a salon was to buy a DT, and to have my hair "done" (read: blown out) for a wedding. I don't have previous experience with this hairdresser, though she cuts the hair of my entire family and she's very pleasant and polite (also a bit handsy). I'm thinking she'll wash it and attack it with a fine-tooth comb and I hate fine-tooth combs because yes, my hair gets tangly and yeeouch.
Then there's the length. I'm thinking of getting two inches off (because of previous damage, tangly ends, and annoying splits), but I don't know if I'll go through with it or chicken out and ask for less. I guess it will depend on how much of a sweet-talker the stylist is. Currently I am still not hip when dry. :p
Also, it will have to be blow-dried (and I never blow dry) because about an hour after the appointment I have to be somewhere, with dry hair, which is definitely not going to happen naturally. Ever.
Yeah, just needed to share that because my family will think I'm really weird if I tell them how much thought I've put into this. :D
goldloli, about the wind => It can be annoying, and I always know I'll end up with tangles and messy hair (wind messes up the curls), but sometimes I don't care because I like the feeling of my hair whipping around me. We set up our old trampoline in the neighbor's back yard a while ago and jumping on a trampoline with your hair flying up and down? Best feeling ever. It was so much fun.
I'm sure your hair looks amazing in the wind. ^^

May 24th, 2013, 04:01 PM
Haha i was just on my trampoline doing flips, cursing the fact my hair was getting in the way, although i do like how it bounces to its own beat on there.
I saw the most recent pic you posted, was actually rather jealous that your curl pattern has remained in tact despite being longer. Your ends looked thick and healthy although if they are splitting and tangling then yeah you should trim. Maybe 1 and a half inches if you're scared of 2? You may get there and express how much you want to retain length and have the hair stylist say you dont need a full 2 inches... that totes happened to me with less awesome ends so who knows?
I'm still loving my trimmed hair, i should be back at the same length next month. Just 2ish more inches till i can maintain at bcl, hopefully by july. tbl is only an inch longer than bcl since ive recently lost weight, meaning the stretch from hip to bcl got longer but bcl to tbl got shorter.
anyway enough details all i wanted to say is yay trim and yay final goal soon, will grow to solid tbl but for now i just wanna trim asap when i get to bcl.

Thanks guys. I wear my hair up every day because I work in a lab and I try to alternate styles to avoid damage so I guess that helps protect my hair.
Granted I would wear my hair down more often outside work if my hair wasn't so frustrating easily carried around at the mere suggestion of a breeze.
Vrindi I hope one day my hair will reach a length where I can say that I have "wispy strands" and not just look like a cat is attacking my face :p

Here's another update! :p As you can see by the photo taken of me on May 21, 2013, I was desperately in need of a trim. And SCARED to death to actually have shears put to hair. I've never had a hairdresser trim the amount I asked. They always took way too much for my liking. Somewhere on the boards, someone suggested going to a BARBER for cuts. So, I called around. One wanted $48.00 to cut a straight line 1" above the bottom of my length! (No wash, style or blowdry). One said he'd never cut a woman's hair before and sounded scared, as if women's hair is made of some different material than men's hair, lol. Finally, in desperation I just walked into the 3rd place (West Side Barber Shop Mechanicsburg, PA). Danielle, the owner did exactly as I asked. She gladly used my Tangle Teaser, was gently with my hair and cut NO MORE than an inch off! The price? $13.00! YAY!!! I am so thrilled to find someone to trim my hair that I can trust. She also said my hair is in very good condition and was thrilled with my length. She will be seeing me for regular trims now to keep a healthy and blunt hemline as I grow towards Tailbone. :D

Alright, I've decided to join this thread since I am definitely waist when pulled straight, but I think I'll wait until July or so to take a picture so it can be full waist. Generally my hair goals are to be anything past waist, but I'd like to see how long it can get and if I'll be comfortable with it.
I have a long way to go! Waist is 26.5" and tailbone is 35"! So I'll be here for at least a year and a half. Oh well, I'm enjoying the journey now that I feel like my hair is getting longer. Also, because it's summer and so hot, I have finally gotten good at putting my hair up most of the time. I usually like the waves that putting my hair in a messy cinnabun gives me. :)

Awesome :). And yeah, that's the kind of barber you want. Just keep looking until you find one that quotes a ridiculously cheap seeming price and actually listens, and tip lavishly when you find them. At least for me, asking my dad or my partner has always been a reasonable way to find a barber of that sort.
(also, I grew up in Hummelstown and used to work in Mechanicsburg, so I think I know where your barber is :D)

http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/y306/fernl2008/6b5be8e8-1222-4d67-8ade-1cfee518f303_zps09756995.jpg (http://s1024.photobucket.com/user/fernl2008/media/6b5be8e8-1222-4d67-8ade-1cfee518f303_zps09756995.jpg.html)
My goal is to get to hip by the end of the year (where my hands are is where I think hip is). I measured all by myself so I am not 100% sure if I got the numbers right, but if I did I have about 2-3 inches until hip at 33", and tail bone length I think is at 39" so I should be here for at least until December of 2014, probably longer though. Happy Growing everyone! I look forward to watching and reading about the progress made!

I'm so damn close its frustrating but one thing i'm glad about is my ends look ok here , yesterday they looked wispy and see through then i remembered i braided it wet which always resorts in thin frzzy ends.

Haven't posted since I joined the thread about 2 months ago, I'm making progress that's for sure. I've got to be close to hip but I can always call it better on others. Though I feel I have another inch or two to go. My hair hasn't grown much in inches, however I think that like a flower, the summer sun is causing me to stand up tall & strong ;) better posture = better length photos.
:agape:holy effing cheese, I don't think I've ever seen anyone's hair grow that fast!

:/ freaking out a lil
so i posted here about scalp sunburn http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=97307&page=7&p=2443371&viewfull=1#post2443371
and i noticed my ends look a lil thinner considering i just had them trimmed... i thought whatevs probably just the way my hair clumped or maybe too much S&D and i should really cut of all of the snarly ends. but then in the bath i noticed hairfall. i've also noticed my hair has been mega tangly from loose hairs lately.
so close to my goal now but i think i'm having a shed and i have no idea why. :(
could it be the sunburn? i have been known to have sheds around this time of year, could it be seasonal? if so why does this happen? i experience no increased growth in summer so it seems weird to be shedding. could it be stress? i'm moving countries and getting married in 2 months. i have a virus atm, a weird one causing back pain and fever, could this be the cause?
they are the only factors, i've never had a stress shed before so that's unlikely. i'm pretty sad because my hair was supposed to be at my goal for the big move, now i might have to cut. my hair gave me a sense of control in a time that's so chaotic, meeting my goal synchronized with other life events was very important to me :(

It sounds like you have a lot of factors that could be contributing to a shed. Maybe one of them wouldn't be enough, but the combination might be making you shed more where you normally have a seasonal shed, or it's the combination of stresses that's making you notice more than you normally would.
Seasonal shedding is very likely, especially if you don't notice increased growth over the summer. It doesn't mean it isn't growing, but the hairs that are growing are probably too short to notice, while more of your hair may be in a resting phase? I get seasonal sheds this time of year. Going through one now. Scalp sunburns are just no good for anything, so try to keep your scalp and hair protected from the sun.
Just because you might not reach your hair goal when you expected to doesn't mean you won't reach it. (I'm currently going through this with my weight, but I'm not giving up.) I've found, through years of flipping out because of chaotic events, that the more chaotic things become, the less you should try to force control. Be organized and calm, you'll be able to see things fall into place that way, but trying to force control only leads to more chaos. Things want to fall into their own places, not your idea of where they should go. Much, much easier said than done, I know.
P.S. Congrats on the move and the wedding! I know both are stressful, but both are so exciting too! My hair was not as long as I had hoped it would be for my wedding, but it didn't matter. I still looked beautiful, and I wasn't thinking much about my hair on the day because I was way too excited to be marrying my husband. Every little thing will not go "right" on your wedding. Expect this, and just see it as part of the fun, because it is part of the fun.

Visas are always stressful. (ok, really any circumstance where you're dealing with US Customs or Immigration is)
My wedding had a grand total of 6 people there, including the officiant. Despite that, I was a total wreck beforehand. Sooo much stress. (the only way it could have been smaller legally was if our witnesses hadn't brought their baby boy) Even if you love planning events and things are going really smoothly, a wedding is stressful. The best thing about our wedding is it gave us the courage to say "no, this is OURS" about a lot of stuff afterwards. We would have utterly melted down if we had gone for the wedding of our mothers' dreams. Going for the wedding where we were not totally terrified was 100% the right choice.
And moving is one of the top ten life stresses. It usually shows up around #3.
So given all that, in your position I'd be in total benign neglect mode. It's ok if your hair is being a bit shed prone or stall prone right now. It's still gorgeous, and when your life is calmer and less stressful, it should spring back pretty well. If you're gonna freak out about something, focus on getting healthy meals with lots of veggies.

Lol. Well that's the thing, I am STILL only 29 inches! I really feel like better posture played an illusion. Remeasured at 29. Well. Lol.
I previously estimated hip at 32 inches. I think I'm just going to go off of photo evidence from now on. I've only measured an inch of growth in months and its clearly gotten much longer.

I have failed at measuring length, it always gives diff answers, one time i measured solid waist straight at 34". front and back body markers are great, except they get distorted when you lose weight.
anyway update on hair thickness: I've gone from 4.25" to 3.5", okay that doesn't seem bad because it's still double thickness of some, but it's the fact the longer hairs are the ones shedding, so you can reaaaally notice it on my ends since i had taper and layers anyway. The last 3 inches look see through, I def think im going to have to cut again

Mzbangbang, I'm 5ft 5 and waist is 28-29" ish. Hip is 30.5" and I thought I had a short torso because I have long legs but apparently I have a long torso according to the fiancée, so your measurements could be right... Bunzfan also has similar measurements.

Well now I'm confused by what short torso and long torso means. :D I always equated torso with above waist and lower body was below waist.
Compared to you gals I have a really long length between waist and hip, but does that mean I have a short or long torso?

No one's gonna see it if your hair is up :). Get your butt to a doctor if you haven't had a recent check of vitamin, mineral and hormone levels, because 0.75" suggests you're not having a measuring error. Mine can vary about 0.5" from day to day, from 2.5-3", and I know other posters have reported similar things. Proportionally, you're edging into the range where it could be normal variation or it could be a real thing. So rule out the obvious stuff, and cut out one little source of stress.
And well, if it does wind up being real... fixing the medical problem will make it easier to deal with your other real life stress. (note: not fun. not actually easy.) It's not good for your body to be short on stuff, and with how much stress you're under, you need to give your body all the support you can.

You are not supposed to include your head in your torso length, I don't think. Torso is from top of shoulders to bottom of butt. In other words, not the appendages (arms, legs, head). Now I will look it up to see how wrong I am...
Ok, medical pictures and charts say your torso is from bottom of neck to bottom of spine (but not TBL)HERE (http://www.outdooroutlet.com/infoimages/5/5/orig/torso.jpg)is a random picture that shows it.
My pics make me look a couple inches past waist but I am not. I am about a half inch past waist, having cut back to waist on May 1st at a solid 31". BUT, waist changes with weight. I have lost 5 pounds since May 1st. My point being that taking pics, to me, is very inaccurate. Too many things to throw it off (camera angle, posture, etc.) Measuring is only accurate for people with straight wet hair (how I measure) or if it is wet and pulled straight. Humidity, braid waves, etc. can all make a difference in tape measurements.
When I measure my hair dry, my reading will vary by as much as half an inch if I do it 3 times in a row. Wet...I get consistent spot-on measurements.
This is why I don't put much stock in a lot of claims of growing 2" a month or not getting any growth in a month. JMO. ;)
I am 5'4" and waist is 31" on me, TBL is 38". I cannot recall hip...let me go check...35", measured at the center of the hip bone protrusion in front. That is constant no matter what I weigh.
I think it is just most important to be consistent with yourself. Comparing to other's torso lengths is sort of pointless!

Mine is at waist now and it's only 29 inches. I'm 5'4'', so average, and I was certain waist would be 31 on me. But apparently not :/ And I have a long torso, I'm definitely all body, no leg :p

June 9th, 2013, 07:26 PM
I'm not all legs... But I'm definitely more legs. My collarbone (or whatever you wanna call the area below my neck and right before my chest starts to erm... Stick outwards :p) is about average length. But my rib cage is short... And the meager two inches between my rib cage and hip bone is even worse. I dont want to imagine what this will mean for me if I ever bear a child haha. But then after that its smooth sailing and my legs just gotta make up a few inches to make my five foot six figure. And by legs.. I mean just my thighs. Classic to knee is something I never want to experience haha.
So yeah, waist is 30-31 inches on me (can never measure that accurately). Hip is 32-33 inches. And TBL is 38-39 inches.
In other all about me news.. I just realized I'm past hip... And thinking of trimming again :(.
Could post a frizzy braid wavey pic if anyone is interested.

I had a full medical from gp just last week, he said it was all fine. My diet is pretty solid and that virus went away, leaving stress and seasonal shed as main culprits.
Last week I completed most of my forms and stuff for immigration, booked everything, made lists and it's also the last day of language school today, which I aced :) I'm feeling much better as if stress has been halved already. The shedding has lessened too. I'll feel continued relief when more things are finished up by next week, but still have the stress of buying a house, travelling there, shipping belongings, getting married, learning to drive, getting employment etc. The point where I was at, was perhaps the tipping point of stress that a person can handle, leading to chaos, sleepless nights and hairfall. All these events are huge on their own, things people tackle one by one over a period of years and I'm having to do a whole bunch of them in a few month span. It's no surprised really that it happened, I've also been either pulling hairs out or snapping them off, though in negligible amounts.
I micro trimmed a cm, it's looking better. As more layers get cut away i'm experiencing less tangles, they were very grabby. All splits have been s&d and very few new ones appear. Next month I will go to salon and cut from bcl to butt dimple length. It's not so bad having to cut, I've been admiring fuller blunter hemlines such as cher from clueless or that last pic of meishkamooshka here http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=112826&p=2453247&viewfull=1#post2453247

Currently about 3-4 inches away from tailbone and aiming to be there by Christmas this year! I actually hit TB last year around November (I was at waist-ish in January 2012) but chopped off six inches at Christmas, and another few in February, to deal with the split ends and tapering. (It wasn't actually very taper-y, but I felt like it was, and it's not like it won't grow back! :-p)

Yeah same. Since the shed my ends look awful and stringy, you can really notice what's left of my layers now it's thinner and i think a blunt cut would look best. Trimming a cm today and getting a salon cut in a few weeks. Maintaining between hip+ and BCL till layers are gone. Fortunately my desire for thickness is greater than length atm so i dont feel bad for cutting.

I think this would be the thread for me. 3,5 years ago I got a shoulder lenght haircut and loved it at the time (though now when I look back at pictures I seriously dont know what I was thinking shudder: ) At that time I dyed it, fried it, teased it and hairsprayed it so the quality was very poor and the ends snapped off. Once I reached APL I seriously started to care for it and quit most of the destructive habbits. 1,5 years ago I found TLHC and then stopped with the remaining bad habbits. Now my hair is currently hip lenght and despite the previous abuse, its in pretty nice condition. I mictotrim the ends, S&D and drench it in coconut oil a day or two per week. My ultimate goal is somewhere between tailbone lenght and classic (I havent really made up my mind regarding those two yet- one day I think tailbone would be long enough and the next Im dreaming of classic. I guess IŽll just have to see when I get there).
Enough rambling, I just wanted to say: hi, Im in :)

Finally joining this thread!! I thought I would stay on the maintening thread for a couple of months but the only trim I had made me happy. I WILL microtrim on my way to tailbone, and probably trim (1"?) at hips because my hemline has place for improvement, but I'm officially growing. :)

^I thought your hair is supposed to touch the seat when you're sitting at tailbone length? Am I wrong? o.o

Your tailbone is the end of your vertebral column, specifically the coccyx. Mine does not touch a sitting surface, nowhere near it in fact. The bones that come closest to the sitting surface are the bottom of the hip bones, the part called the ischium.

Welcome to Magalo and congrats to you, neko_kawaii :D
So when you guys first got to waist length, did it become harder to do a respectable pencil bun? I now have ends that aren't long enough to wrap around, but at least I can sort of tuck them under. But then I also always have a little bit hanging out at the back like a teeny tiny ponytail :p

I guess I have a long tailbone then? It's very near to sitting surface. From BCL to tailbone is like 3" on me, and then to classic is about 2".

I think at some point there was discussion about where the tailbone is when sitting and we came to the conclusion that on some people it does touch the ground/chair and on some it doesn't. I just tested it myself and my tailbone does not touch the ground, in fact there's about 2 inches of room below it still. But I guess for most people the rule would be that if your hair touches the ground or chair when you sit, you're definitely atleast tailbone. :)

Well, this discussion got me to finally, seriously figure out where my Tailbone is! LOL :p On me, my hair will actually be touching the chair when I sit on it at TB length. It's about 1.5-2" below BCL for me and I'm currently at "Can I call this BCL when wet?" Based on my growth rate, I think I should make TB by years end! :joy: YAY!

My tailbone sits about 1.5"-2" higher than the chair when I sit. Everyone is built differently, as this clearly shows. Body markers will look different IRL than on a paper-person.

Hello All,
I'm new to the LHC forums, but I've been lurking around and reading all your posts for the past 6 months. Since joining LHC, I've been thinking were I would fit and found this thread. This one will probably be my home for a while. I've reached waist length about 4month ago, but trimmed due to some hair shed. After a while obviously am back to waist length and my hair shed is starting up again. So, my question is: Do you notice more hair shed as your hair gets longer? And if you do, any advice on how to reduce the shed caused by increased length? (I know this is not my terminal length cause I grew my hair to hip length twice from chin length bob before)..
Any advice will be GREATLY appreciated...

My sister's hair was between waist and tailbone and had been for years. She got a trim yesterday that ended up in a chop (she IS a cosmetologist, so she measured out how far up she wanted it trimmed, showed the girl, and ended up with an 8 inch cut instead of a 3 inch trim as the lady started in the back...). So, for the first time in 18 years, my hair is longer than hers. It is very very strange.

I used to be at tailbone length, but have done a V shape with the longest at hip length for a couple of years now. I haven't trimmed in a while and now have a majority at waist with some a little longer, and a couple of very small formerly face-framing sections which are about mid-back length. I'm looking for tailbone (I unfortunately know exactly where mine is because it likes to be displaced a lot) for now; I think my ultimate goal is fingertip, maybe knee if I can stand the work? But I'm not too sure just yet.
Hopefully this is a good place to be!
I am intending no trims but plenty of search-and-destroy missions - and lots of gentle updos, which I'm still trying to master doing to my own hair - to get me there. Here's hoping. :D

Hi everyone! Long time no see! I'm going to get the hubby to take a length shot for me today :) It's been a while since I've checked so I'm excited to see how it's grown. My bangs are starting to grow out now too, and I think I'll let them, they get too greasy and I have to wash them too often.

Yeah there's no telling, really. Lots of things can cause shedding, including stress, diet, environment changes, etc.

Well Stress is something I've got, but I'm always stressed so it really shouldn't be that noticeable ...I guess I'll just baby it, with a weekly oiling, multivitamins, and more benign neglect? If the shedding doesn't resolve in 3 weeks or at least show a good reduction, then will start actively looking for solutions. Get going to a dermatologist, check blood work and all that...
If it turns out to be just a seasonal shed, what kind of measures should I take to prevent that from happening next summer?
WaitingSoLong

I don't know that you can do anything about it.
I seem to have a huge shed every 2 years. It last a couple months. My regular shedding is pretty low, though, nowhere near the "average" from what I have read. I am guessing 20-30 hairs a day. I shed more on wash days. I never noticed my huge sheds until I started paying so close attention to my hair when I found this forum. Who knows what is really normal for me, I have been watching it 4 years.
You may try counting the hairs. It could be well within normal shedding. If you are actually developing bald patches I would go to the Dr. asap.
Scalp oiling can cause more shedding at first, if that is something new you have been doing. Some have found new supplements can do the same. Going on or off birth control, there are just so many things. Anything majorly hormonal, like birth or a miscarriage, anything majoryl stressful, like moving, divorce, death in the family, etc. Not everyone gets hair shedding from these things, though.
I would just look for anything really different, if there is nothing, and you feel well, I would just wait it out. I wrote my dates down after my last shed (earlier this year) and was surprised at how long it lasted. 2 months is a long time to have excessive hair shedding! But now my hair is thicker, so it must not have been all that bad!

I think I have a heavy autumn shed, yet my ponytail is always 4" around. Unless you have bald spots, I wouldn't worry.

I am officially BCL now. Tailbone is up next. I'm hoping I'll get there by my school's formal dinner in December. But seriously, I need to take better care of it. If I don't make it nice and healthy, what is the point of growing it?
I just started aloe as a "conditioner" (no worries, I live in Kentucky and TN; all kinds of humidity.) I'll keep doing the shampoo bar and coconut oil. And I'll up the protein so I don't have the same problems as this summer. Now, if I can do all of this consistently, and strike the balance between benign neglect and regular neglect, then I hope it will be nice and pretty when it reaches Tailbone.
Now, to expand my repertoire of hair styles.

Lots of pretty hair here--I feel like an imposter! I didnt have a length goal other than to see where it would go though seeing all these pictures and memory of teen hair makes me think tailbone or classic would be a realistic length to aim for. My hair is cut in long layers and there is new growth from shoulder or apl and above though the longest ends are past waist. I have a long torso so it will take a while, but I will hang out here to see if it helps to have a goal. I dont have proper length picture--this shows the shape and curls but exaggerates the length due to camera angle. Those thin ends support the bigger curls higher up and give movement to hair when worn down without creating frizziness.

Hi everyone, I'm new here and this is basically my goal! For some reason my hair hasn't really grown much in the past few months but I'm aiming for tailbone! For me that's about 7 inches of growth but since I'm 'still growing' (as in height) my hair growth can be unpredictable! Who knows when I'll get there :)
Anyway here's a picture of my hair length from about a month or so ago. Sorry about the terrible quality!

I'm solidly at wrist-length! (That is wrist, not waist ;)) I still have a few more inches until tailbone, but it is getting so close!!!
I have always had an issue with split ends, it has gotten better post-LHC, but the fact remains that my up-90%-of-the-time-hair is about 2/3 split ends and/or the feared white dots of death...waaay too many to have the patience for a search and destroy. Why don't I just trim my hair to cut off the splits? I do! But they just keep coming back! So I have decided to try a catnip rinse. I bought some several months ago for drinking purposes and maybe for hair, but I just never got around to the "maybe for hair" part. I will start using catnip tomorrow! Anyone else here use it for split ends?

Why don't I just trim my hair to cut off the splits? I do! But they just keep coming back! So I have decided to try a catnip rinse. I bought some several months ago for drinking purposes and maybe for hair, but I just never got around to the "maybe for hair" part. I will start using catnip tomorrow! Anyone else here use it for split ends?

kme81, check out both the split end and catnip threads. I have been using catnip for rinse and leave in for over 2 months and have had great success in decreasing the splits. You will still have to snip those splits and dots that are already there, but the catnip will prevent more from forming.

Solid is right . What a nice thick head of hair you have. Keep pressing on to TBL.

I cut my hair 6" last night. I am now back to mid-back/waist. I don't know if I'll be back to this thread because after waist my curls are gone, stretched out. Again it is the old dichotomy - long hair vs curls.
I can understand since you have such beautiful curls.

I made better progress than expected. My crowm back hair had a growth spurt this spring and almost caught the middle layer. The middle back is at TBL and the crown is grazing TBL. Even my little square inch of slow growing hair at the top of my head made progress and is approching hip. I will still be trying for my front sides, fringe and little square in rear top to get to TBL, so I will be here for a while longer. JUst slowly growing out the layers :cheese:

I think I have a heavy autumn shed, yet my ponytail is always 4" around. Unless you have bald spots, I wouldn't worry.
Thank God, no bald spots here. I'm grateful for that, but my ponytail at nape is 2.7 inches, while at top its almost 3.7 inches..I kinda refuse to believe that my bangs alone are about 1 inch...
I've actually started counting my hairs shed/day now. According to dermatology books it should be less than a 100 hairs/day. And I'm within that range. Usually within 20-75 hair strands/day. Not sure if they're breakage or actual shedding though.
Oiling and washdays have more shed than regular days. But also, if washdays are reduced to twice a week, than overall shed/week goes up drastically. So, for now I know it's not excessive washing...
Again, thank you so much for all this help and info. It's helping me alot with figuring what to do now. :blossom:

Probably my hair grows faster than I supposed.

I was solidly TB until this weekend, when I trimmed off 5" of wispy, see-through ends. Now I'm at hip when stretched and waist+ when curly. My routine was and still is mostly CO with an occasional S when I think it's necessary. I've been using either conditioner mixed with a few drops of jojoba, or coconut oil as a leave-in. I'm trying harder to protect my ends...they were uneven before mostly because of old layering and previous big sheds, but I would like to keep them in good condition and relatively even as they grow back. That means switching from a sleep braid to a sleep bun and being more vigilant about wearing my hair up. The only other difference is that my hair doesn't get caught in my pants anymore!
ETA that it took about 9 months to grow from waist to TB, with an average growth rate of 0.75"/month and no trims.
I find myself in a similar situation. I am just about TB but same with you I have a lot of wispy hair on the bottom. I should cut it a bit but I am scared.

Clarification time: My tailbone.... if I feel for it (I have quite a large booty) is right at the apex of my rear end if you were looking at me from the side, like halfway to classic from BCL. Am I doing it wrong?

MsBubbles, allycat thank you so much. :flower:
Mallorykay13 I think you are right. For me the “Top of Vertical Smile” is at 36”, classic at 42” and tailbone at 38 œ ”. So that it’s almost halfway.

I am clueless as to where my tailbone is, so I think that when I get there (not for a while yet), I'll just go by "touches floor when sitting," or maybe halfway between BCL and classic. :p
butterfly_dream, your hair is amazing and you are so close to TBL! It looks very healthy, all the way down to the ends.

Everyone's hairs are gorgeous, I'm in awe!
Anyway, it's time for me to join in. Here's my progress so far:

I'm currently 2 1/2" below waist and 1" away from Hip! I just combed my hair so it's kinda puffy and the curls are slightly smoothed out. I actually just dyed my hair reddish-brown but unfortunately the lightings is a bit off so you can't really see it, oh well! My brother's sweet enough to take them for me. :)
Can't wait to see more progress from you all!

I was always under the impression that TBL was the bottom of the tailbone, usually the middle of the butt-ish where the terminal point of the coccyx is?

Yes, it is. The top of it is probably more like BCL.

I have no idea where precisely my tailbone is either :D , so I've decided I'll call TBL when it touches the floor when I sit. Almost there, but not quite!
I was pleased with my hair today, so here's a pic:
