Gorgeous colour, Mononoke. Is that hip or waist? It seems past waist, but maybe a little above hip... I can't tell if your hands are at hip or above. It falls so straight and neat. Wow. (And I like your jeans.)
May I share something?
I am feeling ridiculously happy with my hair right now. I wore it down and curly on Wednesday and was complimented by five different people. A friend of mine proposed marriage to my hair but was shot down. ^^ She and another friend love my hair and can't seem to get enough of it when it's down. It's not surprising anymore, but sweet and flattering. However the next three comments were surprising -- a girl I barely know with a lovely wave pattern admired the length, mentioned straightening and totally understood when I explained how annoying flatirons are to me! A guy, sort of a "casual" friend who is so fixated on the girl he has a crush on I'm surprised he even notices what I look like greeted me with, "Hi! Your hair like this really suits you" and the last guy, who's just barely an acquaintance but rather friendly, said in a completely casual, offhand way: "It's so magnificent." Boy, is that a compliment. :)
Just wanted to share my joy. It's not even that I'm getting a big head about it all -- all these people were nice, but so many at school are bullies that I have no risk of becoming conceited -- but it makes me glad that people go out of their way to make sincere comments about something that matters to me, especially people who I'm not close to.
LHC has taught me to appreciate my hair. I never used to downright hate it, but it was just one of those things that I never really thought about (or took care of). Now I adore it.

I think I did 2-3 full applications, but on my hair the color tends to fade to a brownish shade, or so it did before I stopped with SLS (I hennaed two weeks ago, so I think the red is more prominent).

When I decided to grow my hair out again it was about sholder length, honestly it has taken a good ten years to get tb, but I do ten to trim 5 to 6 inches a year just to get rid of whispies. I have tried many routines with my hair, buying the organix at 6.99 a bottle was probably the wildest. Recently I have started making my own poo less shampoo and conditioner, adding sage to the conditioner has erradicated the greay hairs. Over the last two months I have started to let the bangs grow outand have moved the middle part.. omgosh :) Bangs are a little below the jawline now, and no more dies! We shall see how it goes, My hopes are knee length eventually :)

I read an old post in this thread about a girl having tbl at 31"... Gosh it sucks to be kinda tall! 31" was waist on me, currently hovering at hip/butt dimple 34" and tbl would be at least 4-6 inches depending on the 'trueness'. It's weird ow looking at the pic of their 31" hair looks long and yet my longer hair looks short to me. The only upside is that i plan to hover at 3 inches time, let it grow 2 inches them trim them off, rinse repeat indefinitely. It'll be so great to trim on a regular schedule, not having to baby for length gains. I've stopped even heatfree curls since the mechanical damage from detangling them is counter to length progress atm.
I'm in the microtrim and maintain for 2013, but instead of cutting half inch per month, i might only do 1/2 cm every 3/4 weeks. Perhaps I shouldn't trim at all and race down a few inches and then trim heavily. Frikk I really dont know, all I know is I want bcl for summer and i have a couple inches i really hate. What would you guys do?
Ocelan
February 17th, 2013, 10:50 AM
goldloli, I'm quite in the same spot as you and would really like to get more length by summer but I really dislike my heavily layered ends and have been trimming them off, basically been cutting all the growth for a few months now. I would really like to just let it grow but the ends bother me so much that I keep cutting. I hope my growth rate picks up a bit so that I could get rid of my raggedy ends soon and start the actual growing! :)
I see that you (and I) have three options to choose from: 1) Keep trimming off the bad bits slowly by stalling at your current length or gaining very little length until you are happy with your ends, 2) not cutting at all, possibly being sad about your ends for the whole time and once you get to your goal you have to cut the annoying ends anyway, either all at once putting you far back again, or maintaining at that length or 3) cutting off the bad inches right away, which ofc would mean going shorter for a while but also it would mean you would stop hating your ends immediately. So you will have to think about your priorities here, length or health? I have currently chosen option 1 but am toying with both 2 and 3 once in a while. Just remember the 2 week rule if you plan to cut anything. Good luck!
goldloli
February 17th, 2013, 12:35 PM
Yes indeed, I've seen you in the microtrim thread, you joined this one around the same time as me and I saw your post about hitting hip/butt dimples the same time as i did! It seems we have similar growth rates, lengths and hair issues, although I believe you're layers were at bsl? Mine start just above waist now and there is no way I'm cutting back there. Everytime I get close to the next goal I tell myself I'll stall there, but once there I can't cut back and don't have patience to maintain in the same spot for more than a few months... So it never quite happens. With this being my last goal, like legit goal that wont be extended as is the lhc way, I'll be maintaining there forever, so it shouldn't really matter if i race ahead.
I guess I'm just complaining  I shall grow for a month or 2 then trim for a month! So as not to get discouraged with trimming at the same place every month

Tailbone for me is 35"...I've been a SOLID 29" for three weeks without even a centimeter of growth. Sigh. I was at 31" at one point but my hair felt so horrible and damaged I finally just lopped off two inches. I regret doing it but I do think it made my hair about ten times healthier instantly. The tangling and crunchiness reduced, and with my new oilthecrapoutofit routine it's silky and shiny. So at least it looks great, even if the stupid hair won't just grow.

What would you guys do?
Not have a length goal :)
I loathe and despise detangling with the passion of a fine haired person. My hair can get into 8 hour detangling session messes with very little provocation WHEN MY HAIR IS LESS THAN BSL. The more split ends and other broken or damaged hairs I have, the worse the detangling sessions get. So for me it isn't really a length over health question. I will freaking shave my head if I ever do another 8 hour detangling session. So the splits and damage must be kept down to the kind of dull roar that doesn't leave me hunting for a razor.
What has been working for me is having a monthly scissors appointment with myself. It's ok to cut out tangles any time, but otherwise, there is no touching of the scissors except on the first day of the month. Not even for search and destroy. Then if I think I need some work, I can do it. If my hair hasn't been bothering me, I don't. I find it's a lot easier to microtrim and get a fast and comfortable 5-15mm trim done on an as needed basis rather than spend hours fussing over trying to find individual splits. And keeping the issue of whether to trim as a 12 times a year thing definitely ensures that I don't trim too often. IIRC last year was around 6 or 7 trims, so my growth wasn't super fast. This year, I'm not expecting to trim as much, tho I'm definitely trimming some.
I'm also not one for a razor sharp hem, so that definitely plays into it. The more I stick with the once a month schedule, the more my hair seems to shift into a more naturalistic kind of blunt that is easy to style, but looks a bit layered.

Do braid waves eat up much length of your hair?
When I was at 94cm I took a picture with braid waves. Now I have 94,5cm and it feels so much longer. So I took a picture without braid waves and...
http://imageshack.us/a/img812/1843/fllae.jpghttp://1.1.1.4/bmi/imageshack.us/a/img441/6757/faststeiefeb.jpg
and WOOOSH, it looks so much closer to tailbone. Yay. I love braid waves anyways but not for that effect. Well.
But yay, only 1,5cm more and I'll have reached tailbone and will go for classic :D

Updated length shot, from just a few days ago:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2894&d=1361858407
Just a couple inches (if that) off hip when the flippy ends are straight. I'll call hip when it touches my belt.
This part of the journey, for me, is going to be all about minimizing mechanical damage. As a very fine-haired wurly, any handling is going to cause problems. For the last couple years I've been detangling after washing and combing into a bun, and with a couple re-combings and re-wraps it dries straight - and I barely have to touch it for the next four days. I'm wondering about detangling after washing and then leaving it alone to dry down. Pros: less combing. Cons: It's down and rubbing on stuff, and the curls get super tangled and make awful knots, and I might have to do just as much combing to get them out before the next wash. What does everyone think? For now, I've decided to eliminate the fine-tooth combs and do basically the same thing I've been doing, only using just the wide-tooth comb.

This really could be the best thread on LHC LOL
Oh, I don't know... the classic to knee thread really is something. :p
But yeah, the hair in this thread is gorgeous.
My mother commented on how nice my second-day hair was. I like it when she likes my hair (because she so often used to not) so I've been wearing it down for two days straight, which I never do.
I just realised it's March now! That means it's been pretty much three months since I trimmed an inch off (January 4th), so I figured it must have grown back by now and I could maybe see a little progress. It's also been three months since I took a real length picture, so I decided to have a little fun with that. I've promised myself not to obsess too much over the length this year, but... Picture time! I apologise in advance for taking up so much space. Three pictures to make up for three months, hehe.
Hands are at hip in all photos and I'm excited to see how close I look! But of course, curls mean it will take ages to get there. I was already very close in January. ^^ I'm so ready to claim this milestone.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2951&d=1362231846
With my "curly" striped shirt (official length pic for March, hehe):
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2952&d=1362231849
I'm there stretched/wet/straight (but that's nothing new):
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2953&d=1362231851
Seeing these pictures make me want to trim again, to get closer to having one-length hair (except for my bangs which will probably only catch up to the rest ten years from now). I really hate how thin my hair looks, but I promised myself I'd wait 'til summer to get near scissors again.
I really wonder whether my hair will be as curly if it's all one length. :X

March 2nd, 2013, 08:01 AM
Darkcurls, your hair is so great! It looks so long. You ask if your hair will look as curly if it is all one length and not layered. I have found that my hair appears less curly when it is long and unlayered. It is still just as curly, but the curls get elongated like a stretched out spring. I often wonder if I should sacrifice length for curl, or curl for length.

March 2nd, 2013, 08:07 AM
Thank you kitschy!
That's what I figured, too... I'm a bit worried. I'm not there yet, but I love my curls so much I would hate to have to choose between them and length. I want my hair all one length (or as close to it as possible) because I braid my hair a lot and I don't like my taper much, but I think once I get there I'll realise I like my hair down better when it's layered... Ah well. I'll decide when it's time. I want to experience blunt ends at least once.
But your hair is amazing looks great one length. I gape at your curls every time I see them on the forums.

Darkcurls- I've always loved your hair! I think waiting until you get there is a great idea :) I do know lots of curly girls with very long layers, pretty much just one or two right at the bottom to add "movement" but I like the look of hair all one length.

It isn't much progress at all, it seems I've been in a bit of a stall. I think it's the cold weather, because I haven't even had to trim my bangs lately, and in the summer I was going every couple of weeks.
Any advice on getting it going again?

Darkcurls- I've always loved your hair!
Good, because looking at your straight-straight-straight hair is giving me serious envy right now. I love my curls, but sleek hair always impresses me.
How much growth do you usually get? Because if this is only a month's growth and you've had a trim, I'd think it was normal not to see much growth, unless you have really fast-growing hair...
Then again, I don't have straight hair, so a month is never enough to see growth.
It's normal for it to be slower in colder months, as you said.
EDIT: Oh, thank you, bunzfan! *beaming*

Bunz, mine gets frizzy too, at one point I was using dryer sheets to get rid of the frizz! but now it's nicer since I've stopped using harsh shampoo :p and pantene ice shine! You're a bit curlier than me though (I'm a 1c/2a , I think using cones makes it heavy too) I can't belive how long everyone's hair has gotten since I joined! It's so fun watching us all grow together <3
^-^ thank you so much! :crush: (it's actually wavy wet but when it dries it goes limp :( I'd love to have pretty beach waves)
I guess it's just the other side of the fence, I've been trying for weeks to get bouncey pretty curls :3
I haven't ever actually measured my growth. Usually I just go by how often I have to trim my bangs. Maybe she just trimmed off more than I was expecting (I didn't look at the floor, it always makes me cry inside)

my hair is past BSL by a few inches. I haven't trimmed or cut my hair in over a year, close to 2 years! I just decided to really go after waist and beyond. I'm working on growing out my layers too so that will take time. I will probably maintain waist length for a little while so my layers can catch up.

Oh i took this yesterday i thought with that much growth i must be close to hip by now. I realized depressed though that its not 29 like i thought it was but 30.5 oh well i'll get there eventually .

I'm slowly creeping downward. This year I'm being super hysterical about my hair so I can avoid any chops. Since joining LHC I've had to chop about 20 cm off due to old damage and not micro-trimming. If I had those 20 cm today, I'd be well past hip at almost BCL.

I guess I'm in this group atm :D measured my hair yesterday after my mini-milestone, and because I'm not so good at it I got a range of 83-85 cm (32.5-33") :)
oh and my hair (obviously it's longer than it is on the picture :D)

The first photo is after layers cut in, (the second photo is the "before" picture). You can see that I now have a deep U shape with the layers going up higher that waist. I thought I might get back some of my curl that has been weighed down since I've grown past BSL, but it didn't really make a difference. Now I think I'm back to growing out to one length.

This is me, I think it's brushing waist. I was pleasantly surprised at the length as I took 2 inches off the other week and thought i'd put it back way above waist. So either it was longer than I thought or I didn't take off as much as I thought. Please excuse the quality of the photo and the state of my hair, it's all in braid waves and oiled (I forgot my conditioner when I went to the gym so I just used a lush shampoo bar on the whole length, it's quite soft)

KittyBird, lunalocks, and cranberrymoonz, your remarks are too kind. I had some pictures taken over the weekend with my family at my mother's funeral, and I was alarmed at how wispy and thin my hair looked in front . On a whim, I cut layers (myself) - I was sort of relieved I didn't mess it up too badly.
My hair is thinning at the hair line - I think it's just age/hormone related, but it makes me scared and sad. Maybe I'll post a picture of the front of my hair and get some suggestions on how to style it better.

I've finally reached waist, and is now working my way down to tailbone. This is taken after my first try with henna, over several red chemical dyes. The top 3 inches or so is virgin hair with only one round of henna, hence the colour difference. Hope this works, first time posting pictures. :)

I've been in this category for a few years now. I was at BCL, but I keep trimming to even up the ends, so don't know if I'll ever get to Tailbone. My hair is baby-fine, and breaks very easily, so it is hard. It also tangles terribly, so I end up doing a lot of damage just trying to get the tangles out.

Mandie, it's hard to tell for sure, but I would guess the top of your hipbones might be near where your hands are so I would call that level hip. Try to have a feel for where the bones "stick out" and that's hip for you. :) Doesn't look like you have many inches to go if I say so.

Hi everyone! My hair is at waist now and I'm intending to grow to at least tailbone. I have a history of getting to TBL, neglecting my hair, getting annoyed with the tangles and chopping it all off. Hi everyone! Joining this thread... it's been my dream to make it to tailbone. I always seem to not like to handle and care for my hair after the longest ends reach waist but even if I don't like tailbone after I reach it, I can always cut back to waist. My hair is about 2" from hip at this time! Very excited. Also, I noticed my sleep braid tassel now touches waist on me. I was super-excited to discover that!
Funny story - I did my sleep braid the other night (basic english braid, nothing fancy) and I pull it up over my head and bend at the waist to continue braiding when it gets too far for my arms (as opposed to pulling it to the side to continue braiding). When I finished the braid and tied it off I stood up, flipping the braid over my head at the same time. I got bonked by my braid tassel right above BCL! Now, my braid is nowhere near that length IRL, but somehow the combo of hair flipping and head tilting equaled a braid tassel whacking me *almost* on the behind. I had to laugh, and then had to tilt my head back to see how far I could get my hair to go while tilted. Yup - BCL when tilted back all the way. =] 1" past waist in normal posture.

I thought my growth was ultra slow, like half inch per month then take away all the microtrims = nothing. But yeah I think stretched my hair is an inch from bcl possibly? with gentle/braid waves its at hip, with wurls it's can i call this hip. Which means it's definitely moving on from hip now.
I got the LHC effect, if you remember my old sig it said 'hip wurly ~ tbl stretched???' as final goal except after finding a pic of goal hair http://ha-ir.tumblr.com/post/43078980044 i now want bcl wurly or whatever this girl has! is it gentle u hem with layers?

Maybe a daft question, but how do you measure your lengths? Is it the dry length that most of your hair seems to be at? Wet length? The length pulled straight? Looking at mine dry and not very wavy, I'd say it was hip. Wet, its pretty much at bcl. When its fuzzy and feeling uncooperative its more like waist!

March 17th, 2013, 07:22 PM
Given just how many different methods people use, not a daft question at all. :) Personally, I measure with my hair dry and pulled straight; I find it to be the most consistent. At this length it's really easy for me to put my hand behind my back below my shoulders, and gently pull straight both the measuring tape and my hair, right down the center of my back. I slide my fingers down until I no longer have hair between them, and then I look at the tape where it's pinched between my fingers. Hope that is helpful!

I trimmed a little last night (using Feye's self-trim); will have to ask my bf if it looks okay today, and after that I will try to post pics :) My hair was at a bit past BCL before the trim; now I think it's somewhere between hip and BCL. Will have to check. I guess it wasn't essential for me to trim; but I felt like it - last time was in September sometime - and my ends were getting a bit grabby. Now they're all fresh and happy - and I can still do all the buns I've been doing! That inch or so that I cut off didn't have much of an effect, yay :)

I officially reached waist on New Year's Eve 2013 and have only dusted my hair once since then. In September 2012 I had hoped to reach hip length by graduation on June 9th, but it's looking like that's not going to happen. So I guess I'll just be at Waist+ for graduation ah well  I will take another length pic the next time I wash my hair and see my progress, except this time I won't put it in a braid so I can see what length it is without the braid "waves" of the New Year's pic in my signature.

I joined in Aug 2010, with BSLish hair. By Aug 2011, I technically had waist length hair, but it didn't look like waist, just measured like it. By Aug 2012, I had hair that was obviously waist length even to non-hair-geeks, despite some trimming (so I moved out of BSL to waist and into this thread). I'm an inch or two shy of BCL wet now, tho when dry my hair looks more like almost LHC style hip. My hair is almost never down without braid waves in it, so I get some shrinkage from that.
It's unlikely that I'd make tailbone this year. I'm planning to trim some. I may make tailbone by next year, and it'd be kind of weird if it took me past Aug 2016 to have my hair look like tailbone when down.
Personally tho, I'm *way* more excited that my twin braids touch tip to tip in the back when I wrap them around my head :D. I'm getting closer to my goal of a braid that wraps around my head! I may have my braid elastics touch this year, which would be all kinds of awesome.

I've stayed strong and not succumbed to trimming addiction. I think I'll be brushing bcl in time for my birthday in may, including 2 microtrims :D Stuck with the updos challenge although I did straighten and wear hair down for st patricks... Seriously though, straightening is lame! I swear my hair is less shiny and silky when styled that way, not to mention tangles and damage even on lowest setting. Much prefer blow drying on cool!
My original goal was to get to tbl then style as i please because i'd be maintaining and able to trim damage frequently. Over time I dropped the heat and now i think i'll be mostly heatless just because i prefer the finish. Its all voluminous and swishy from heatless curling or low heat blowdrying, all gross and matted after straightening.... plus it takes a week to return to normal hydration.
Happy growth and progress everyone!
oh and my bangs are now an inch+ below chin so i might get them styled into face framing.

I joined in 2007 with shoulder length hair, id grown from pixie prior to joining, it had took me 18 months to get to shoulder. Id reached bsl in 2008 and waist in 2009, however around 2009 i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started to shed a lot so i maintained at waist until late last year, hip isnt that far from waist on me as i only have a short body. I reached "can i call this hip length" early this year and have a further 6" until i reach tbl, my first stop will be BCL which is a half way point, so should reach it by September and tbl by this time next year....then onto classic!!!

I do measurements with a tape while damp and pulled straight. I just hit tailbone while wet. Dry and stretched I'm at BCL but mentally I think about my hair as between hip and BCL because that is where it lands dry and unstretched.

Waist is around 30in on me. Looking back at my notes I measured 30 in January 2012, so that is 14 months from 30 to 36 inches. I have pretty average growth (.5 ish) and trimmed about an inch in that time.

I should easily reach tailbone by Christmas. It's been 14 months since I chopped it off to APL, and I'm at waist now. Can't wait to have my long hair back (but hopefully in better condition than the last time I was at tailbone).

It seems like it takes me the same aount of time time to get to a new level these days. My hair is doing this shoot lead hair thing then fills in. Sometimes I am looking at the same numbers for what seems like forever but I started noticing that its more and more hair at that length. So I guess its all good. I just get anxious as to whether or not it will make it to the next inch.

Mind if I ask where exactly tailbone lenght is? Is it the lenght just above buttcrack or the end of spine in the middle of the bottom? I'm confused,I've seen both lengs claimed as "tailbone",but as far as I recall, tail bone is right above your butt ?
Anyway,I think I belong here - I've just discovered when rinsing my hair in the shower it's just about inch and a half shy of the top of my pelvic/hipbones! Quite a shock,as I had a chop in august to just below BSL.

The second one, I believe (others will correct me if I'm wrong).
Butt-crack length goes by... buttcrack length (BCL), not tailbone (TBL). :p

From what I understood, the easiest way to tell is to sit down, and if your hair is long enough to touch the seat then you're at tailbone.

Not really,I have usually gotten about a centimeter a month in the past, but I have had some health issues back then. I believe the growth spurs I get right now are the results of being healthier than I was before.
Thanks for clarification!

My hair is growing depressingly slowly. It was at hip a few years ago but I had to cut it back to waist because it was so damaged. For the past year, I seem to be terminally stuck at waist. It's driving me mental. I feel like just giving up on my goal of having long hair.

Whee, I'm finally getting some growth after over half a year of very slow growth (about 0.2-0.3 inches a month) and this month I had grown 0.7 inches!
I've been microtrimming to get rid of layers and to thicken up my hemline, but this month I didn't cut any. I will next month. So I'm now at about butt dimple length. Still almost 5 inches to go until I reach TBL though.

I think I've managed to creep past waist by the skin of my teeth. Woot woot! I cut back to APL from just below waist on 7/6/2012, so it's taken me just over 9 months to get back here, this time with a mildly blunt hemline and less layers!

Aww shucks! That's such a sweet thing to say. I actually had a bit of confusion over it because people tell me it should be even with my elbows, but it's not... by a lot xD My main issue with the way I'm shaped is that my torso is so short. You'd think my body would compensate by giving me long legs, but no- teeny tiny torso, then weirdly long between waist and the bottom of my bum, then dumpy legs! It's peculiar, but hey, I'm compact and bijoux :eyebrows: Out of curiosity, what's the bun in your avatar? I love!

I think I've finally made it to waist. It's practically tailbone in the shower, so I figure it must be waist when it's dry, though I can never really tell in the mirror. Does it count when it's possibly only waist in the shower?

March 25th, 2013, 09:33 PM
I shall join this thread :). I suppose I'm now at "can I call this hip" - really not good enough for me to call it hip, as I have a V hemline. But about 5 more inches to tailbone, which translates to a good 7 months with a trim or two in there for me. Maybe less. BSL to hip was easy peasy on my short torso.. but now comes the hard part with my long butt! And oh yeah, I consider tailbone as grazing the seat of whatever you're sitting on.
I'll post a pic after my next wash, hopefully in the purdy spring sunlight.
I think tailbone might be the end of the road for me. When I first started this journey, I was thinking classic... but the longer it gets, the more effort it takes to maintain. And I don't know that I'd be up for the major upkeep I hear about that happens once you get past tailbone. Anyway, I'll just have to see. Is TBL the end of the line for any of you? If not, do you worry about the maintenance that comes with the longer lengths? Has anyone been past tailbone before and want to share their experience in the transition?
Happy growing everyone!
P.S. When I lean back in the shower I'm at solid tailbone hehe.

March 25th, 2013, 09:47 PM
I thought tailbone was the spot b'twixt the cheeks where you can feel the actual tailbone... I'm pretty sure that part of me doesn't come close enough to the chair to count when I sit so maybe that's just BCL? What's the difference between the two, just the chair thing? That's discouraging, I am so close to where I thought tailbone was.
Cheele
March 25th, 2013, 10:05 PM
The reason I count it as grazing the seat is because I have a rather flat butt... so my tailbone directly hits the seat. Its excruciatingly painful to do sit ups on hard ground because of this *recalls horrible memories of high school P.E :wail:* Haha anyway.
But if it's easy for you to measure by just feeling your actual tailbone while standing, then, by all means, just do that :)
EDIT: My sitting and grazing the seat is the same for my standing and feeling it out. I suppose it differs for every body.

WOO!!! I finally got some growth for March! I started the month at 29" and I am now at 29.5" Ever closer to truly having 2.5 feet of hair which is my next mini goal. Also my growth seems to come in spurts, nothing new for weeks and then within the last couple of days every month a sneak attack of half an inch or so. I really ought to do a microtrim in April, but perhaps I can hold off until May.....just to have my mini goal of 2.5 feet of hair for a little while at least. Anyways I really ought to update my signature pic and will do so after my next washing and drying so as to get an accurate length shot as now I have fairly tight braidwaves from an eleven strand elf braid that I've just left in my hair for the past 3 days.

Its just a physical difference. But for some reason they are two distinct lengths that people prefer. In the photo the TBL length would be at the base of the Tailbone and Bcl is where you stated or sometime refered to as the top of the verticle smile.

I washed my hair today and I decided to have a look in the mirror while my hair was still sopping wet (well actually I had to look many times), and I realised that I'm just a few inches away from BCL! I stretched my hair and did a(n inaccurate) measurement, and I think the longest bits are about 2,6" away. I may actually reach my goal of having BCL or 'Can I call this BCL' hair by my birthday in the end of August! Hey,
My ends are tangling real bad, I wore it down around the house after brushing and holy frikk! I'm thinking of a 1inch cut, invoking the 2 week rule obviously before I go. Also my bangs are below jaw and shapeless. Eugh I hoped these old ends would hold on till solid BCL but they are just catching and splitting faster than I can s&d. The good news is that my thickness is now approaching hip, even my old face framing is below waist. So I shall get this cut then wear in braids and s&d most of the time, making exceptions for my holiday next month and days out. It's only an inch, just over a months growth! I just hate hip so darned much and wanted to be outta here. should be bcl for sometime in june though, even with cut. hmm maybe I can just hold out till then and microtrim a lil... no there's just too much tangling.

April 6th, 2013, 03:49 AM
Hi :)
One inch off seems to make a lot of difference at the moment, but it's really only a trim. Like you said, it's one or two months of growth, depending on how fast your hair grows. Your hair will be a lot more enjoyable if the ends don't tangle as much. It's probably a good idea.
Braids don't protect the ends, so if yours tend to be fragile watch out. But I suppose you already know that.
Why do you hate hip? :p Just curious. I'm not there yet, so I'm wondering...
goldloli
April 6th, 2013, 10:58 AM
:) oh hey dark curls!
I know it's only an inch but I'm like agonizing over it so much! Hip looks awful on me especially from behind, the ends fluff out and cover my waist (there's some tentacles but also fluffing and tangles), also it's a weird length where it feels neither long nor short. I made a whole hair vent thread about it and promise to just race to BCL then trim. But, my thickness has traveled down so much that theres a definite contrast with the last 2 inches of hair, it's not pretty fairy tales that I could get away with before, it's just obvious wispy patchy ends.
I will go through with this cut since it's for the best. I'm a fond believer of leaving the ends to take damage (monitoring with s&d ofc) instead of frequent cuts that leave the fresh trimmed hair exposed to damage. But yeah I think these ends have taken enough damage, I'm seriously cutting out splits every day yet more appear! It's not scissors, it's hair that is damaged, that snags and splits from gentle finger combing. Hahaha I've written an essay about a 1 inch trim!
I'm incorporating daily dry scalp massages, having head upside down, wearing hair in braids outside or a bun around the house. I'm going to do a probiotic scalp rinse inbetween poo and condition (which came to me as I was replying to the dandruff thread) which should kill off any yeast that may be hindering growth. Eating bananas, kale, lettuce, other silca foods etc and protein! Basically throwing everything at it so that I can cut 1 inch now and 1 inch in summer whilst also reaching solid BCL for summer. I also might resurrect catnip soaks (which had caused hairfall) but I think they'd be fine if soak just ponytail instead.

Hi, goldloli, could you please tell us about the "probiotic scalp rinse"? I am very curious what products you use and how you do it. I think healthy scalp is critical for hair growth, so I definitely want to incorporate this practice.
I've been at waist for a couple months, not in a hurry, but goal is probably tailbone or some manageable length at which I'm not sitting down on my hair yet. :))
One of my biggest concerns is how to self-trim at this length. I've never trimmed my own hair, and hairdressers always disappoint me by cutting off extra and pulling and tearing my hair with low-quality brushes. What are some good self-trim methods / Youtube videos you would recommend a self-trim newbie at waist+ length?
Thank you! :)

Your routine sounds really well thought out, goldloli. :p I'm lazy, I don't do much for my hair except wearing it up. Thanks for sharing all that, it's interesting.
And, meteor... I'm going to sound like a broken record because anyone at LHC can give this advice, but I used Feye's method when I decided I needed a trim in January. If you only want a trim, not a cut, it's great, and at waist+ you should be able do it pretty easily -- that's the length I'm at now. For a first time, just cut less than you ultimately want off and see if you feel like going for a little more.
I use the blunt cut version, but you can use it for V or U hemlines as well.
Habioku has a really helpful video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9Erf49Eyxc).
Written instructions here (http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/).

Hiii there!
For self trim, everyone recommends feyes self trim, which you should look into as it gives directions for different hemlines. I actually just divide my hair in 2, comb straight while pretty damp, pull the ends taught and snip a few mm. There are people tie a pony tail under chin then close the ends in a book instead of pulling ends taught, most methods stem from feyes self trim, whether you skip the first step of cutting hair behind to back or not.
I just dreamt up the probiotic rinse since I cant use oils on my scalp so a tea tree rinse is out. I plan to have room temp water, maybe slightly lukewarm for a good breeding temp, then simple open up a couple cheapish probiotic capsules and sprinkle the contents in. Leave for an hour or 2 so they breed then pour onto scalp and leave for a few minutes between poo and dish.
Once upon a time I had immune system problem and caught infections like wildfire, I was on 4 types of antibiotics which resulted in my 'flora'/yeast/good bacterial balance getting messed up. From this I developed systemic yeast infections of the scalp, throat, mouth etc which resisted even antifungal treatment. Several times I ended up with I.V antifungals in hospital but they would just come back a week later. The reason for that long winded story is so I can point out just how great probiotics are despite their stupid names... I blasted my system with tablet forms and yogurts and those little probiotic drinks, endlessly for 2 weeks and the infections cleared up. I dont believe homeopathy type things but yeast/flora balance is a very real thing as my doctors would tell you. I also don't think those probiotic drinks have benefit over regular yogurt and the tablets! Back then I made a watery paste from the tablets as I wanted mega concentration to apply directly to areas, but I think a rinse for hair would be fine. My scalp is itchy atm so if there is a light infection hindering growth then it should clear it right up. Btw this isnt monistat so wont add growth. Also this isnt a conventional thing done around here like ACV rinses, I did just make it up from my own experience and will report back if my scalp itchies go away.

Thanks a lot for all the useful information, goldloli!
I'm sorry to hear that you had to undergo so many antibiotics treatments. You are absolutely right introducing as many good bacteria as you can! The path is not just to kill bad bacteria and leave that space empty, but also to make sure that the good bacteria are introduced and dominate your system.
Microbiologists showed that a human body has 10 times more bacteria than human cells. So scientists often look at human body as an ecosystem for bacteria (kind of like a tree or a forest are examples of ecosystems for smaller forms of life).
Anyway, I think your probiotic rinses should work, but you probably will need to do them periodically. I know some people successfully apply yogurt for dry, itchy scalp and it's mildly conditioning for hair + ACV (balancing).

Thanks! I just googled 'probiotic scalp rinses' as it turns out i'm not the first to think of this and many are using the paste form as treatment for s. derm and scalp itchies. There are even such things as probiotic shampoos, who would have thought it?!

Today I was at a local long hair meeting and was asked several times if I was not yet on tailbone or rather why or where I define it so far down.
Thats my hair today:

I don't have those healthy problems anymore but good to know! I tried out the rinse, it killed the scalp itchies right away and weirdly had a conditioning effect, like it was acidic, gave a little slip too. I'll probably do one 1x per week for a while.

I used yogurt a couple times specifically for conditioning effect on hair: it seems to give extra shine and slip. Some report slight hair straightening effect from milk products.
It's mildly exfoliating on skin (due to lactic acid).
Great to find a natural product that's good for both scalp issues and hair.

Hi everyone. Just measured yesterday and I'm just barely at waist!
I have a couple of goals for the next two years.
1) Get more than a couple hundred hair at waist AKA solidly waist!
2) Grow to hip length.
3) Maintain at hip length to trim out some layers (my bang are as short as collar bone)
4) Get to TBL!
or alternatively
1) continue not to trim until I hit TBL
2) wack it all the way back to hip and maintain for a while
3) Obtain glorious TBL mane??
We will see :)

I'm doing the same thing, pretty much, I'm just longer. I'm at hip now, thinking of maintaining at tailbone for about a year, then growing to classic. Although, the micro trims are working so well, I might just keep micro trimming to classic and then stop there and maintain until the last of the thickness catches up. I hate growing, then chopping off several inches. I'd rather trim as I go.

I'm not happy with my hair or life atm, I wonder if those are linked. My hair is freaking out, behaving like it's had too much protein even though i've not touched protein for a couple weeks, I think it's the central heating.
Booked my hair appointment for next week, tempted to get a couple inches trimmed instead of just the one. This is probably a rash decision because im depressed and have real bad insomnia. The thickness is just past waist now, the tangles and splits occur up to waist, i should just cut it back to there but i know it'll re-split on its way back down ruining the fresh hair. My hair is almost at at bcl but doesn't look it and I ripped through a few tangles today when i lost patience finger combing... eh.

Goldloli...I think the central heating really did a number on my hair (and skin) this past Winter. It's over now, thankfully, where I live. I have been turning it over in my mind too, like you, about cutting back to waist. But I think I'm just going to keep doing more SMT's, monthly dustings and wearing it up as much as I can stand it. I think I have resigned myself to stalling here via trims til the thickness catches up, which for me is now right about BSL.
I'm so afraid that when it all catches up, I'll have a massive shed again. This might be as good as it gets for me!

Thanks for well wishes vrindi :o my mood has picked up a little, I cut out 100 or so splits and clarified. Poured catnip on the lengths and wearing updos to keep hair at bay. Is it possible for health to affect sebum to the point it makes hair behave erratically? Or is it more likely heating?

Yeah both by skin and hair somehow ends up dehydrated yet greasy after just an evening sitting in the house with heating on... Gross! I'm sorry about your shedding, I've been following emichee's hair stalling progress to overcome sheds and re-thicken up hair, hers looks lovely now. I think with combined knowledge here, any reason for hairfall gets detected quickly, so try not to worry (unless its baby hormones coz i guess there's no stopping that). There does seem to be a length where 'thinning' becomes more apparent, I think I hit it and those ends had to go. Honestly if they weren't tangling then I would have continued to braid and baby them until it grew out, just like you're doing.
But hey I get blunter ends which will look super awesome blown straight. Plus after this trim the last of my reverse v taper will be gone, then its just regular taper
Oh and if anyone is interested, I found out sephora own brand flat iron goes as low as 140f, well below the magic 300f number where real damage starts to occur. I still straighten my bangs and have been on the hunt for one since i dont want them turning to splitcity crud when they grow out like the rest of my hair did.

I am starting to hate the thinning I did at shoulder-blade length. Now that I have so much thickness above the line, it looks bad, even with the curls filling up the negative space. I am so tempted to cut off 2 inches, but I don't want to lose the length now that I'm at waist, which only looks midback. I guess it looks ok curly, but sometimes I want to wear it wavy, and it looks thin when I do. Ah, well--this summer I'll want to wear it up anyway.

Same, same. Okay, I never thinned my hair (it's not thick enough for that!), but it's layered, which gives me thin ends. Hardly visible when my hair curls, but I know my ends are thin because I straightened it once last summer.
I also want to cut (trim?), but I've decided to hold out until this summer (for no particular reason other than it sounds nice). I'm just a little too worried about losing length. Can't help it.
Out of curiosity, how do you wear your hair wavy? Do you brush it out (I'm guessing not), or braid it when wet, or...? Sometimes a change is nice.

I generally wear it down on washday and if I feel like doing a half-up the next day I will oil and brush it out. I can brush it if I'm careful to have oil and/or detangler in it. I get voluminous waves and sometimes the ends will curl up by the end of the day, depending on humidity.

New length picture in my signature, almost to hip! woot!!! I guess to reply more properly to the thread question I should add that just a few months ago I found a routine that finally works to keep my hair happy and healthy! Now I mostly use shampoo bars from Chagrin Valley followed by an ACV rinse and some very light conditioner. This always leaves my hair clean and happy. I wash every other day although I may try and stretch to every third day soon and I alternate between sleeping with my hair drenched in coconut oil on wash day and doing a very long SMT for deep treatments. On occasion I clarify with regular shampoo but only when my hair gets really weighted down which seems to happen only after at least a month of shampoo bars and usually more like two months of straight shampoo bar use. I also use beer rinses and protein treatments when it feels like my hair needs them. Other than that no heat whatsoever, always sleeping in either a bun or a braid and mostly wearing my hair up have been phenomenal for keeping my hair happy thus allowing me to grow fine hair this long. Here's to hoping I can reach tailbone length before 2014!

I think my last post here was a woeful whine about splitting ends and general dissatisfaction. So I tried catnip. I did my usual CWC and then dunked the length in warm tea for about 1 minute, then air dried as usual. Boy, what a difference. Smoother and the ends appear thicker. I have stopped mineral oil and replaced it with NEEM oil, but not on damp hair. Only one drop on the length, mostly ends, at night. No new splits this week. I really am amazed. I think I like my hair again.
Unfortunately, I tried 2 things at once, so don't really know which one is to celebrate, but I am going to stick with this for a while and see what happens.
I am still at 36 inches which, for me, is hip - about 2 inches to go to BCL and 4 (I think) to TB. That is my goal for now, to get there, maintain, and thicken up the ends.
It still doesn't feel really long. I guess this is what I thought waist would be like. It also doesn't feel like I make much progress but in looking through old photos, even when my hair was not quite waist, it looks very long!

That's awesome vintagecoilylocks! I also have grown-out bangs, which turned into face-framing layers, and which grew way too long to be FFL so I now refer to them as my shortest layer. :p They're only around APL curly and BSL straight now, though. Sometimes it feels like it will take ages to catch up!
spirals, I don't think FFL would look weird at any length. bishonenrancher on youtube has (gorgeous) long hair and keeps FFL. I think they're great, they really frame the face when you're wearing updos/braids/ponytails for example and soften the look (it makes it less "strict" somehow). Of course, I'm probably not the best person to contribute as I'm growing mine out. :p But like you, I went through a "debating" stage (feels like every day is a debating stage anyway).

Keep them!
I'm only ever going to let my bangs and ffl grow down into longer bits but they shall always be there, either shorter or longer. I think it's incredibly flattering when you have curly hair like us, to have shorter bits that spring up around the face. If i wanted a more polished and professional look id probs grow them out.
I have a good hairdresser story!!! :D perked up my mood somewhat. So yes I went for my 2 inch trim, planning for an ultra soft U hem and shaping of my now jaw length bangs. The salon owner was endlessly complimenting my hair, telling me not to cut it, 'women look better with long hair' etc. He was promptly told that if women didn't cut they'd be out of a job. The girl washing my hair told me she was trying to grow hers long but it kept breaking, I gave some LHC tips such as coconut oiling and gentle detangling.
For the first time ever my hairdresser decided my ends weren't in terrible thin shape and to cut less than requested. He cut my hem pretty blunt, which at first I hesitated but then saw that my reverse v taper was gone and some old layers at the sides merged in to look like a soft u. My bangs were turned into a brigitte bardot meets surfer type thing, they look soft when curly but will still look modern when straightened. Then some ultra light feathering and I was pretty darn happy!
I'm back at hip, with 2 months to BCL again, this time a lot happier with many aspects of how my hair looks.

April 17th, 2013, 11:00 AM
For me, anything more face framing than my natural wispies is a HELL NO. But 1c is really pretty straight, and it's tough for stylists to cut layers light enough in my fine hair to be softening rather than harshening. Giant thick chunks do not look good... and in fine straight hair it turns into a giant blocky chunk very quickly. The more the layers look like (or are) the result of my natural shed/regrowth cycle, the more likely it is to suit me. And that means a huge tendril is about as thick as a pencil, and most of them are more the size of a mechanical pencil lead.
As my hair grows, I'm (very slowly) getting a natural V shaped hemline. It's nowhere near fairy tale ends really, but it does give a layered effect, and I like it.
In curlier hair, I think layering tends to look pretty good. Curls tend to clump more than my hair tho, and have a much more "broken up" shape. That makes it much easier to get a cut that's scaled to suit your hair's texture.

I debate about bangs, too. If I did cut them, they'd be to my chin in 6 months, anyway.
DarkCurls
April 18th, 2013, 04:58 AM
Hmm... bangs would depend on whether you could pull them off while curly or not. (Assuming you don't want to straighten them, which is also an option, though probably not a popular one). Would you want them straight-across or side-swept? Both can look amazing on curly hair.
I used to have straight-across bangs when my hair was straight, and kept them when it was wavy, but as soon as I realised I had curly hair I started growing them out. :shrugs: Not sure why anymore, but I'm glad I did. I'd had bangs my whole life and it was a change which I found refreshing at the time.
I remember growing them out, and they were to the bottom of my nose when pulled straight, but always boinged back up to above-the-eyes length (AEL :p) when straight. I never used to get them trimmed since they always bounced right back up to the same spot no matter how long they were, until they hit chin. Now they're more like a shorter layer, adding bounce and volume to my hair. And I need as much of that as I can get.
Sometimes hair doesn't curl at the root. In which case you'd end up with straight-ish bangs anyways. That's something to factor in. Is your hair curly from the root (or did it use to be, when it was shorter?).

Every time I cut bangs it turned out I looked plain stupid - thanks to my particular skull shape, huge forehead and hair thinning at the front. So I would say - if bangs suit your features, just go for it :)

I have the typical straight-at-the-root 3a hair. I wouldn't mind pinning them down at night so they'd be straight blunt, or heat-styling. That's a lot less damaging to my hair than coloring. But my mom says my face is too wide for bangs. I do feel it is when I'm retaining water, which is when I clip them diagonally. I basically have side-swept bangs now if I part them on the side, but they fall in my face or puff up.

I'm debating the same thing! I grew out my bangs to almost chin length and I'm thinking of growing out my all over layers and only dusting off the length. I'm thinking for tailbone to have everything the same length in a V-shape and then keep the front pieces at around chin length. My hair is straight though. I think with curly hair it looks pretty to have two curly strands pulled out of the updo that is about chin length. I love the texture of the hair, the way it looks when it's up. Straight hair has all those shorter strands that stick up and out everywhere.

I think the dry scalp massages and scritches are working. Something is working because I'm def growing around an inch per month and i never get spring/summer increased growth. Looks like I'll be back at BCL for july.
I straightened with low heat on friday to see what my new cut looks like straight, man it looks so much better. I wont be straightening with flat irons again for a while since i dont like the finish compared to blow dry low heat, probably going to wear braids or bun curls. It's at the length where it's becoming problematic, an entity of its own that i constantly need to be wary of. I took off my bag and some hairs caught on the detail snagging them. When its windy i get a face full of hair. Curls are better for wearing down since the weight of the clumps means they dont fly around so much.
I consider my ends to be fine now, like i can just forget about them and microtrimming. They should hold up till i reach my BCL curly goal and start maintaining. It's refreshing to feel good about where my hair is at in terms of length and look. Going to try posting less often and not obsessing over hair :o

I trimmed today. :( I took of at least one inch of scraggly split ends, and then S&D'd, and now my hair is soaking in olive oil. My split ends are really eating up my length right now, so I am crossing my fingers that this will work.

I found one split end. Only 1, not 50. I think this means I've cut off most of the most fragile hair, and the good hair care of the last year and a half is beginning to show. Still a couple of years until I cut off all the old dye/bleach, but thanks to regular micro trims and S&D, my ends are much healthier now. For those of you dealing with splitty ends, there is hope! I'm about 2 inches away from BCL. I also feel like this length has something to do with it. Once my hair reached waist and then hips (not too far apart on me— I'm short), it became much easier to deal with. I thought it would be more difficult, but I was wrong. It gets in the way less, and I'm more aware of it and comfortable with it, so keeping it from being damaged is easier.
Trying to convince myself to hit tailbone and stay for at least 6 months before going on to classic.

I have been contemplating these http://691superlonghair.blogspot.com/2013/04/coronet-braid.html type of face framing bangs for several months...my issue is that I would be really bad about making sure the bangs don't get looking too oily. :( Part of me really does not want to get bangs, but another part really wants them!
I haven't had bangs since I was 6 years old so I really don't know how to deal with them! They kind of scare me! Haha :D

kme81, those are adorable! My bangs definitely get oilier faster then my length, probably because of the face oil I put on every night, but it's super easy to lean over the sink in the morning and use a dab of shampoo to wash your bangs under the tap. I do it nearly every morning. And if they don't need washing, I wet them anyway so I can finger comb them into place.

the baby hairs and hairs closest to my skin/temples get oily because i have pretty oily skin. I just put a head band on making sure the oily hairs arent pulled back but the rest is, and wash them when i wash my face, with the same wash too (it's sulphate free foam because my skin is sensitive). Then i blast the hairs on cool with blow dryer for a few seconds otherwise they go curly, then readjust headband so they are with the rest of my hair and bam ultra low effort non greasy bangs.
I know some people use dry shampoo but i dont like the feel of that stuff.

Those bangs are cute!
I've been considering some sort of side swept bangs too. I'm resigned to the fact that I always wear my hair up but I don't really like how my face looks with all my hair pulled back . I'm losing weight now so I'm going to wait and see how my face looks at goal weight.

After my S&D session today I'm envying you so much right now. *g* Holy moley, the amount of splits I found. And I'm not even due for a proper trim until in, like, five weeks. I think I might ask my hairdresser to do some S&D-ing then, too - she shouldn't charge more for that, right?
I was curious about how long I actually have to tailbone, so I thought I'd try the sitting-down thing:

That'd probably be another year and a half of growing, or even two, if I were to go that far.

I'm going through the same dilema! I feel like I look.... weird, when I pull all my hair up. I leave 2 sections in the front out, but even though they were the shortest "layer" when I last got cut, they're still reeeeeeaaaaallly long, so they look kinda funny just hanging there. I keep wanting a side-swept bang, something that I could pin out of the way if I wanted to, but urg, I've NEVER had bangs in my life! I'm too chicken >_<

I measured my hair today and I've grown a good three quarters of an inch this month. And that's with twice weekly s&d sessions to try and deal with my horrible ends. I must have trimmed the end off every hair by now I think! Very pleased by that. My hair has been known to grow an inch and a half in a month but had really slowed down the last couple of years. Hope that means it's getting it's mojo back!
Schweedie your hair is gorgeous! Love the sitting down picture. What a lovely way to show off your hair.

I lost 1/8 inch off my hemline, only because I wanted to do a microtrim. I thinkg chin-length "bangs" can be flattering, and some layers in the front make them look not weird.

Ooooo, that sounds pretty cute! That might be a bit dramatic for me to do at home; my front layer is just past APL. But maybe I'll try to find a stylist to try that out on me, so long as they keep from making it blunt. My hair seems to rebel against blunt cuts.

I got an iphone and had someone take a length shot, my first for a long time. I hope I can get it to post.

This was directly after my once yearly whole head application of henna, normally I'm roots only. I mix a lot of Cassia in too.
Creeping past waist. I'm considering cutting back to waist to get better ends.
Wish I could get the pictures to be bigger, I'm using someplace called postimage.org, I'm thinking I should be able to do better w/the fancy phone.

Well here's mine, it's not the best because of the lightning and all but for length purposes it's fine I guess. I'm not at tailbone (because someone said it had to touch the surface of the chair when you sit and I'm still like a years growth from that) so I'm calling it hip. It is wavy, wavier when freshly washed and straighter when it's been a couple of days or its been bunned for several hours.

cute hair, btw im not even sure the chair thing is true. I tried it and it was inches below tailbone. Then i thought about it and realized if you have 'padding' in the butt/thigh area then surely that would add inches between your tailbone and the chair. idk maybe some people sit weird and it works. I measured from front hairline to chair and it was an inch or so from classic length standing.
your hair looks to be brushing bcl

I agree, I bet it would be BCL without the waves (how are they so even? you're so lucky, my waves have a distinct "slept in a bush" quality to them )
I've just hit "can I call this hip" when my hair is wet yay! I was hoping to be brushing classic by the end of the year but I had to trim a few inches and had a stall (and a shed :( ), so I'm hoping for BCL at least by new years.
Also, Dorothy, I don't think you need to cut back as far as waist, my ends looked very similar to yours at the beginning of the year and a 2" trim turned them blunt. I wish I had your pretty copper colour, it's gorgeous!
