Kitschy, Growing your hair long is like living. We don't say we are gettting too old to live we are actually getting better, really. Besides you have such beautiful hair that has yet to be fully realized. This is all apart of you. And you are growing with it. People want to cut us off in so many area's of our life. I don't know if I have asked you before but do you trim to keep such a nice hemline or is it natural. I am dealing with natural layers from the shed and damage and just hoping for a hemline like yours one day natural without scissors.

I trim about 1/2" every 3 or 4 months. I'm still getting rid of some layers. But I do think I like the light layering I have left - probably the last 4" have the residual of layering. I love your hair and length - so inspiring! And the way your write?...simply moving!

Kitschy, I just want to add to the love for your curls and your length. Your hair looks fantastic!
I'm due for a trim in a week or so, I took my 'before' shot yesterday:

Tailbone for me is about where the four seams meet, I think. I'm not sure I want to go all the way there, though - for now I'm aiming to get halfway there from where I am now. It's weird to think my goal length is so close! (And slightly annoying, because while I don't want my hair to be much longer than this, I still want a longer braid, heh.)

My hair is just above tailbone. One inch would put it at tailbone. It hasn't grown since March. But I'm just glad It grew as long as it has. Some women can't get it that long. So I feel blessed.

Hello people :)
Great hair is to be seen here! I love it, please keep posting pictures :)
I'm at 91cm now... quite close to tailbone, too, if my hair keep growing this fast (more than 2cm per month lately), I'll be there soon.
Here's a picture of today

and yes, I had some color in it. I needed a change and this feels right. It still looks good with my skin and eyecolor, so it's nice.
The shine is all camera-flashlight ;)

Aren't we all so lucky to be able to come here and see such different hair types but all with their individual beauty, wavy, curly, straight, colours, shine, thicknesses - no two the same at all. It's amazing when you think about it. I just admire everybody's hair on here. When I am feeling bad about my hair I remind myself that maybe there are people who would like my hair. And those who for whatever reason have no hair.
Guess I'm feeling philosophical today. And a bit sad. Don't know why.

I guess I should join this thread now. Tailbone is my next goal (though I don't see myself maintaining at TB, I'll be excited when I get there). I posted this picture on the LHC length picture thread, but for reference on how close/far I am:

Forgive how bad my hair looks, it was half-dried in the picture because that's the only time it's not kinked by braids/buns. Tailbone is probably a bit above the top of the pockets. Knowing my hair, it'll probably be this time next year when I finally get there.

My original goal was to stay here til I have TBL curly. Well my texture is most likely dictating that I have to be knee length for that. I have layers and my longest is 1/2 inch from Classic but still only hangs to just below BCL even after being wet and after an over night braid. My next layer is 1/2 inch from lower TBL and my center rear canopy is about 1 inch below BCL. My front sides are just at hip. After alot of years, and many set backs I am officially calling TAILBONE Length. YEAH!!! The next thread is perfect for me now TBL to CLassic. I will also remain on this thread to remind me that I have a alot of work to do to reach full TBL stretched or curly.
This photo show the longest layer from a braid loosed.

This photo is of the next layer from a braid loosed. Its just at middle TBL .
http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd465/vintagecoilylocks/latesummerandFall2012A062.jpg
This is a sample of my canopy and why it will have to be knee length to hang to TBL.
http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd465/vintagecoilylocks/latesummerandFall2012A006.jpg
oh well, I am happy to have gotten this far. FTP Length is about 2 inches above knee on me and may be a good place to maintain for a spell for the other layers to catch up. that or do micro trimms. I haven't trimmed in years. That will be strange cutting my hair other than S&D. So I wil see if I have the strength at that time.
For now on to Full TBL and Classic

Kitschy, thank you. I am not bragging but you are right. Also given the time period I was raised and the standard hair care practise i was taught it took a huge paradim shift for me to acheive this. Always wanting long hair but was clueless. Now it is becoming common place for my type hair to acheive longer lengths. Having said that I believe many of the different type's have had to relearn better hair care and a understanding of what we want and reject what is common and mainstream to acheive the long lengths we see on this website.
Neko_kawaii, you are too kind. Alass I have this thinking that until I reach full Classic it still seems short. But I really appreciate the compliment.

Thankyou every one for the very nice compliments.
I actually usually keep a small portion of the very front part shorter, to avoid the pulling at the hairline that long hair creates. The V cut layers also help with this. The last time my hair grew this long (about 8-9 years ago), it was one length and I got headaches all the time. Now, my hair doesn't give me headaches and I'm going towards my longest length ever!
Thank you for your nice comments. Yours is beautiful. Keep protecting it, it will get there:)

I love the pics in this thread!
Think I've hit the point where I need a silk pillow case and alternative sleep/wear around the house styles. It just tangles soo much, lint is usually the cause :/ also my standard cinnabun on top of head to sleep in, secured with a spin pin, is now getting heavy and pulling at the roots making my scalp very sore. If I do a looser bun, then it just pulls on a few isolated strands which also hurts and possibly results in those falling out. I think I may try out sock bunning again, if not then idk some kind of twisted braid and a sleep cap? I use damp bunning as primary means of styling, not really a fan of braidwaves or nonuniform curls on myself, so a lot of buns and braids wont work. Perhaps pony curls, rag curls or foam rods?

I'm 4 inches to TB & have noticed like others that I have tons of ends sticking out from braids or buns. But I have some sideswept fringe growing out at around chin length & a few BSL layers growing as well. Looking forward to having a thicker hemline once the growth evens out. I'm beginning to like the idea of fairytale ends more & more.

I have the same issue! Will stick around here and hope for some suggestions. :)
I do use satin pillow cases though, and I find that it really works. But I don't want to wear it loose to bed, and just like you my cinnabun is starting to hurt. I also use damp bunning and cinnamons to style it, and I really really want the look it gives my hair. If I sleep in braids I get beautiful waves - but only the hair on top and not on the ends. I believe it's the damage that makes it hard to keep a form. Anyway it looks a mess because the shorter layers are wavy and the longer are pin straight...
I will stay updated on this!

Checking back in after a years absence..I am still at waist. My growth journey is very frustrating because my hair is thin and fine, and I have a massive taper. I haven't had a hair cut in ~3 years now, and started at ~BSL. I have been around waist for a year or so now..I feel my hair just stopped growing. I am afraid I am at terminal length, since I have the taper and my hemline around waist does not seem fuller after one year at all.
I never wear my hair down because it simply looks bad, but I still have some damage. I keep my hair braided at night, and I think I will try to find a satin pillowcase. Anyone else with a similar issue in this thread?

I was going to say, Two inches isn't so much, take courage! ... but then I remembered that I have less than that to get to hip and it seems like ages away. So instead I'll say, good luck. :p
I've been thinking about trimming my hair... And by trim I mean two inches. Honestly I don't want to. I don't have many split ends, and the ones I do are further up than the very ends, scattered through my layers. S&D is probably best for them. But I am getting really sick of my layers and hate how thin my ends are. It looks fine when curly (funny when you think that they were originally cut in back when my hair was still straight!), but my hair was straightened once this summer and I had two-three inches of drastically see-through ends. I know the only way to get rid of my layers is to cut them off. I was thinking of maintaining at hip for a while (as in a year --') for the rest of my hair to catch up, but now I'm not so sure I want to wait until then. Looking at my braid, cutting off two inches would get rid of the majority of the taper (three would probably get rid of it all). That would set me back at just barely waist when straight, probably APL to BSL curly. I would hate that, which is why I haven't done it yet, but I really am getting annoyed about my ends.
I'm not going to do it, but it's nice to think about it. :p

Sorry for the extremely horrible picture. I marked where the top of my head is & where the top of my pants are. I don't normally take pictures of my hair & my camera doesn't have a self timer on it so I had to use my crappy webcam. Anyways, can you tell if I have waist length hair? It's kind of hard to tell where waist is when we can't really see your body... Waist is the narrowest part of your torso.

To those who asked about sleep styles as your hair gets further into this length category: I really recommend a silk sleep cap used with a silk pillowcase. It keeps my hair contained at night and relatively tangle-free (a little finger-combing is enough in the morning, sometimes not even that). With the pillowcase the cap/bonnet stays on better and in case it comes off you have a backup lol. I finally caved and bought one when my top-of-the-head bun started pulling and hurting. Occasionally though I just push it up over my silk pillowcase and sleep with it loose...

Hello, all! Looks like I'm just one more on the journey from waist to TBL. With luck it will be a quick-ish journey...I trim my hair by about half an inch to an inch (if it really needs it) every three months or so to keep the ends of my hair nice and blunt, and in between I S&D and try to keep the length nice.

If you don't have much of a waist, use your elbows as a marker. On most of us, waist and elbow length are very similar. Those of us with really long torsos may have a narrow bit that extends well past the elbows (me! me! me!) but it's no big deal if waist is a long milestone. It's not like thigh is exactly a small milestone after all ;).
Anyway, hip is a somewhat tricky milestone, since it can mean anything from "hits the top edge of the waistband on my hiphugger jeans" to "the fullest part of my body is covered". BCL is just horribly inelegant. Some folks think tailbone isn't much better (I disagree, but I'm perhaps biased since I love the word coccyx). After that, most of the body part milestones sound pretty good. So chances are you won't want to talk about most of the next few milestones a lot except with really hair obsessed folks.

Haha, I always have an issue describing the length I want to my friends at the hair club over an other forum because of that
"you're shooting for what length?"
"BCL"
"what's that stand for?"
"erm..... bottom crack length" (note that the term butt isn't allowed)
"oh... I see..."
I think that's why I always imagine my lengths from the front rather than the back. From the front it's about right where my thighs start (looking at the edge of my body) or right around wrist-length.

If you don't have much of a waist, use your elbows as a marker. On most of us, waist and elbow length are very similar. Those of us with really long torsos may have a narrow bit that extends well past the elbows (me! me! me!) but it's no big deal if waist is a long milestone.
Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest, too. For most people, elbow length and waist seem to be about the same! :)
I think I have about five inches to tailbone at this point, and I'm aiming for a little shorter than that. I can definitely tell that my growth is slowing down a bit now, though - after my trim a few weeks ago my hair didn't look all that much longer than it did after my last trim in September, sigh.

I think you're a liiiiil bit past waist, like dip of back length, you can see ever so slight contour shadow of the back in that pic. Congrats!
I did a 1cm-ish trim, well less in some areas, a touch more in others to create a nice medium U hem. Followed by a most ruthless S&D. I had neglected hair since end of October due to roadtrips in the states and then holidays. The tangles were causing more damage and breakage, ends were crumbling and looking see through. Really it needs a 1 inch trim but I believe leaving old ends to take damage then trimming them off is better than trimming chunks and those just getting damaged/fine later.
I also invoked the 2 week rule (or rather 2 month) over getting new layers put in. After these hideous velcro ends, i'd like to have easier hair for a while. i do like a wall of hair! Also i dont think my hair will look thick enough till shed hairs catch up in around 1 to 2 years, my end hairstyle probably wouldn't look good until then. So on with the monthly <1cm microtrims and tbl layer free hair for summer!!!!!!

I thought i would be hip by now but i'm not quite there  as i am having a tiny trim at the beginning of January i think i should be there by the end of January or February, i will be be doing a lot less trimming next year as i spent the entire year hovering between waist and hip.

Yeah, I can't remember where I first saw the suggestion, but I was having a period where I was convinced I was FAT, and it helped my sanity a lot.

That must be nice! My torso is really long so waist lasts from about 30-34 or 35". Classic is around 46-50" (not sure how my hair will hang at that length) so tailbone isn't gonna be super fast. I measure roughly annually, so I'm not sure exactly how long my hair is right now beyond "longer".

I'm joining this thread at last! I recently hit hip length and I'm hoping I will get to TBL in 2013, or at least get very close. If I only micro-trim a few times and treat my hair well, I think it should be possible. My very unrealistic dream would be to get to my goal by my birthday in August, but unless I get an extreme growth spurt, I highly doubt that will happen

I can say I've soundly met waist and my next (isn't that the way of LHC?) goal is tailbone. I have found a hair care system that works for me which has mostly involved creating my own products such as 'poo bars and my "ancient chinese secret" oil combination because commercial products just don't do what they promise.
I have a picture and will get it on here.

Okay, so I measured last night. I've been trying to ignore the measuring tape for a little while, but I decided, what the heck, it's the new year. Obviously ignoring the length is what works best, because wow!
My hair was 29" when I joined, it is now 34" at its longest point (stretched). That's five inches of growth in eight months, just a little over the half-inch a month average. This is why it's infuriating to measure month-by-month, but now that I think back to eight months ago, I really feel like it's grown. This puts me at top of pants length when stretched, and EEK! length when wet and cold and dangling down my back.
To celebrate, I should probably get a trim. --'
Now I will try not to measure until my birthday (April) or better yet, my LHC one year anniversary (end of April, that would make it almost four months).

I guess I have a ridiculously short torso, my elbows are definitely at hip-length for me...but now I know an awesome way to judge when I've reached hip! :D
I've just hit waist after a veryyyy slow winter growing season. I have a slight U-shaped hemline (less than an inch difference). Thinking I might let my sides reach waist then trim to even it all out and then grow-grow-grow! :D

To finally reach hip which is a cat's whisker away and if i got to TB that would be soo awesome, now i manged 3 months between trims i want to stretch it to every 5-6 months i realized why i trimmed so much before i am a perfectionist but, once a stylist did it i didn't feel the need to trim ...that may be because her 1/2 is my 2 inch. My goal for 2013: at least BCL, if not tailbone. I *hope* I hit tailbone by the end of 2013. Right now I'm just below the top of my hips. I think it's about 4" to tailbone, so it's not unreasonable, but I'm going to be needing a little trim now and again, to keep the ends good, so it might take a little longer.
I'm sort of pledging to myself to keep it up more. When I'm at home I tend to let it down and of course it rubs on everything, and since I work at home, it ends up being down a lot. I'm going to start learning new buns, and just got a really cool hair sword, so I hope that will help me remember to keep it up and protected!

DarkCurls, yay for growth! Ignoring it really is key. I've decided not to take any pictures that show the length until March before my next trim. Pictures of braidwaves and bunwaves are allowed, since they don't show the true length, but I'll try to resist those, too.
Marcellaa, your hair is looking great!
My tentative goal for 2013 is actually to reach my goal length, which is also little above BCL. If I get the same amount of growth I've had over the past couple of years I should be able to do it, but since it's slowed down lately I'll just have to wait and see. This was my December post-trim picture - the pink line represents my goal, or thereabouts.

My goal will not so much be a certain length, but to get a thicker hemline at my current lenght which is hip (at 82 cm). If I feel like my hemline starts to look good enough before the end of the year, I'll let it grow, but atm I'm only looking at maybe growing an inch to reach my mini goal which is the "butt dimples" (at about 84-85 cm).

Sooo, people on this thread, what are your hair goals for 2013? :)
Keep the splits down to a manageable level. Keep my trim rate and growth rate balanced out so I don't panic chop coz my hair won't stay up. See how much farther around my head my braids creep.
My long term goal is to have a single braid that wraps around my whole head. This is probably a roughly LHC hip length braid, and since my hair is straight, I have braid shrinkage to contend with. I'm guessing I'll need hair somewhere in the tailbone range for that.

My goal is to be able to wrap my braid around my neck like a thick, braided scarf. Right now at hip length I can just barely put the tassle over my shoulder, and I'm hoping at tailbone length I would be able to get it all the way round. If not I'll just have to continue growing to classic :D

Sooo, people on this thread, what are your hair goals for 2013? :)
I was trying to let my layers just grow but I have decided to do a series of trims of the layers to help them get closer together this year. My shortest is just grazing hip with a fringe just grazing waist. The longest is at grazing classic. It really makes styling and buns awkward. So my shortest will basically get S&D while my longest will get an actual trim for the first three months of the year. That's my best growth time of the year so I will take advantage and maintain Classic then let it grow. Hope to have the shortest at or below lower TBL. If this works I will repeat next spring with the same trims. Then to work on the goal of classic with m braids/twists or waves.

Good luck with growing out your layers vintagecoilylocks, I can relate.
I am feeling very proud of myself right now. In the light of my growth these past few months, I bit the bullet and trimmed my hair for the first time since October 2011 just a couple minutes ago (whole process took about one minute, why bother with salon visits?). I figured, new year, fresh start, you know? I needed to get over my fear of trims anyway. This was my first self-trim, too -- the good thing about curly hair is that it's very forgiving. I don't know if the hemline is even or not, but it doesn't matter. :D
I was so disappointed to see how healthy the hair (one inch, eyeballing it) I cut off was. It felt soft and I couldn't find any split ends. This is hair that I straightened for years and used to never condition. It should be heat damaged and dry and splitting all over. (Okay, it is a bit dry. All my hair is dry.) I felt a bit sad about cutting it off, but in the end, I'm an inch closer to getting rid of my layers. It was worth it. My ends were so very thin that the actual last inch of hair looked tiny in my palm when I snipped it off.
At the moment hair has been in a braid for two days and is heavily oiled (stretched out, easier to trim than curly), so I don't know what this will give when curly, but in braid waves I was a little past hip before and am now at just hip. I don't feel the difference, so...
What was I scared of, exactly?

Anyone have any idea for styles for thick hair between hip & TBL? I've been wearing my hair in a peacock twist since it was about APL (folded as the length increased), and it's getting to the point where the claw clip can no longer hold over the folded hair. Lazy wrap bun, nautilus, any other ideas?

I have not trimmed in years. I was just so wanting to get to Classic and when I had stalled there was no need. Now that i have come close to classic the annoying layers bug me more then the dislike of trimming. I believe trimming interupts the natural growth and balance so that is why I am only micro trimming and only for the three months when my natural growth is best. If I stall I won't do it again. Lapushka, I really like knot buns, either plain or the celtic (aka slip) knot. I found they were really good at helping me learn the feel of a too tight bun, which is good for me since my hair is really slippery. A too tight knot will let you feel that the hair scales are rubbing against each other, so it was a lot easier to loosen up. My hair is thinner than yours, so I was doing a plain knot at BSLish (~27"), and a Celtic knot comes in for me a smidge before waist (~29" or so). So depending on how tall you are, they may be options.
If you're used to holding buns with a single claw clip, try using 3-5 smaller claw clips around the edges of a knot bun to anchor it to your scalp hair. I use 2 most of the time, but my buns are smaller and lighter than yours would be :). Scunci makes a roughly 1" long claw clip that can darn near hold all my hair's thickness, so maybe go one size up from that? For anchoring this way, you want one side of the clip to grab scalp hair, and the other goes into some of the bun hair, so the clip doesn't need to be as big to provide a secure hold.
Another one I really like is Hypnotica's Artemis bun and Hypno bun. Again, they worked for me around BSLish, so it may be doable at your thickness soon. She shows them with forks and sticks on her Youtube channel, but it's pretty easy to get them to stay up with small claw clips around the edge.

I use sticks sometimes, but they're not great under a bike helmet or in a ballet class, so they're not my favorite. Goody's Modern Updo Pin is basically a medium sized really cheap fork, and it works under a helmet. The instructions that come with it are kinda stupid, and it works a *lot* better if you ignore them and use it like a regular fork. Small claw clips and Goody Spin Pins also fit under bike helmets (mind, I'm talking me-size small... my iii thickness sister and sister in law don't really use claw clips at all, so I don't know how it would work for them). A Ficcare definitely wouldn't fit under a helmet. A Flexi-8 might, but I haven't tested one yet.
If you like braids, I can dig out the Giant Pile of Braid Videos that my sister is working through. There's a lot of cool stuff that can be done with twin braids, and going for 2 means that a iii thickness is a *lot* more manageable for her.

Why not just stall a couple months at waist? i did that and it didnt even feel like a stall because as it thickened up, it gave the illusion it was getting longer, you know because the bulk of hair was moving down. i cut off varying amounts of my growth per month and after 3-4 months it was solid and better hem. i estimate i cut off 2 inches in that time and grew maybe an inch, but it looked wayy longer!
I was too scared to cut off much, so i did once weekly or fortnightly trims of a few mm. anything i cut would have grown back in a week or 2 if i changed my mind and wanted to continue growing. Then i slowed down the trimming to once or twice a month and made my way down to hip by the end of that same year, without an ugly hem and half of the layers are gone :cheese: I also found that my ends were crumbling somewhat so the fresh ends actually helped with growth rate, going from barely half an inch to 3/4ish. Obvi this is just my experience and method that worked for me when i couldn't tolerate shorter hair but wanted layers gone, others may think it too painstaking to trim such small amounts that frequently.
In related waist to tailbone milestone news, i did a cm+ trim into a nice u shape on nye. Yesterday i saw my full hemline reflection and thought it looked good for the first time in 2 years :o

Well done darkcurls before i started micro trimming i was like you hence 10 months between trims but just think how great your hair will look now. I agree with goldloli even though i trimmed quite a bit 1/2 a month it still grew and my hair looks a lot longer than it used to because the trashed ends are gone and the thickness is traveling down but, doing it for 10 months probably wasn't needed now i'm going back to 5-6 months between trims.

It would probably take a year or more of maintaining to get rid of my shortest layer (APL-BSL "bangs"). Waist length doesn't feel long to me. I'm too chicken to maintain here when long hair beckons ahead. :p
Thank you for the advice, though. I do think that if my hair was all one length I would feel as if it were longer -- at the moment when hair falls over my shoulders they're my grown-out bangs and hit about APL, the rest stays behind my back. But I've only just gotten over my terror of trims. Maybe if my hair was damaged, I would trim more, but not now. I think I'll trim again in April, or over the summer.
Is your hair straightened in your avatar pic bunzfan? It looks very sleek. The ends are really quite full. :)

DarkCurls I feel the same. My hair has just reached waist but the shortest layers are still BSL and I can't bare to cut it to get rid of them even though I know it will look better if I keep trimming to thicken the hemline. Waist just doesn't seem look enough, it's also unerringly frustrating as with bun curls (I normally have my hair up so any time after the day of washing) it doesn't look waist either so I'm scared even a small trim will send me right back out of this thread (I'm just dipping a toe in at the moment, I will return in a month or two when my hair looks more solidly waist length). My other problem may be that my waist is moving down as I'm trying to lose weight, it may actually reach the level of my belly button at some point but it makes my hair look shorter!

You only need trim when you think its needed and if i had your curl shrinkage i would no doubt feel the same, yeah i straightened it over Xmas and loved how long it looks. Please post a length picture of your hair now i bet it looks lovely and much longer than your picture.

Don't have any pictures on hand, my hair is rarely left to curl happily since I always wear it up or braid it and that seriously messes up the curl. :p My most recent natural picture is from November. Hip is still a good inch or two aways, curly. It doesn't look much longer than in my sig, which was taken back in August. I used to think I didn't get much shrinkage because my curls are very loose, but actually I do. :p Fine by me, I like curls.
It really does look long straightened bunzfan! (Straight lines look longer than wavy/curly?) And it looks like it doesn't thin out at all at the ends.
Hi FireFromWithin. When I joined I was just brushing waist, it took me a few months to be solidly there. Didn't stop me from lurking this thread though.

Bunzfan, your hair is looking really nice. Question, was it your canopy hair or nape or just your front that was the shortest layers. Hair always look longer when the canopy is the longest. I have the reverse water fall thing going on. My canopy is the shortest an even though the lower layers are grazing Classic it just does not translate into long looking. So I am still on this thread until I have a solid canopy and front sides at lower tailbone. I think that will be a while even with my trim plan for this year.

Thank you:) i think the shortest was on top and the sides they are only just waist where as the middle section is nearly hip that was the only way i could do it one length by having a u cut in. But i hate how it makes braids taper so i am slowly having it trimmed out.

My hair is solidly past hip (the first black line in the pic), and my goal is to get to around the second black line. TBH I'm not entirely sure where my tailbone is - it feels like it's around the same as BCL, but is that even possible? *is clueless* Anyway, I'm pretty much brushing BCL now if my hair's straighter, yay. :) Am aiming to grow it to mid-bum or so and then either maintain there or cut back to a bit past hip. I really like my current length.

Veery nice head of hair. An easy test for your TBL is to sit on a flat surface and when your hair touches it is definately TBL.

I think the waist to tailbone length is where I am getting the most tangles and am finding more breakage than before. I'm a little nervous about growing longer than tailbone, think of the damage when your hair gets long enough to sit on it! Maybe it's just me and I'm more lazy to do updos, preferring braids instead. Anyone else? Are you noticing more splits and dryness at the ends than at other lengths?

My split ends have improved due to very regular s&d sessions, however i am experiencing some dryness and tangling. My hair also seems to be changing into a wavier version of itself.. no idea why as far as thats concerned.. but i believe that is contributing to my tangles.

This hair is older so its important to include some type of sealing product in your routine/ and a healthy diet to ensure stronger hair to begin with. I would have never made it to TBL with out it. I currently have no splits or dry ends.

Thanks for the clarification! I always used to think that BCL and tailbone were pretty much the same thing. So that means it's BCL that's about three or four inches away for me, and tailbone would be quite a bit further.
Happy growing for 2013! Hope you make it. :D

I went for a trim today, but I actually lost about 4cm (1.5 inches) due to a lot of splits and dryness. My hemline is now U-shaped, and only the longest bit is still past waist, the majority of the rest is brushing waist and the shortest parts have some growing to do!
Since I've been experiencing a lot of split hairs and tangling lately, plus a super dry scalp, I'm going to try a few new products... I'm going to start with a shampoo and a conditioner from orofluido. I have the hair "oil" allready (silicones, silicones and some more silicones. but it smells good) and it helps with the tangles. Also, no more braids during day time. I think the braid rubs too much against my clothes.
But yeah, I'm back to the length I had in summer, from "brushing hip" to "waist", and according to my calculations, TBL is more than 2 years away. *sigh* Not a very happy hair day.
I have a pic in my blog, but I'm going to do another one in better light for posting in the forums.

I have the deep conditioner from Orofluido. My hairdresser tried to sell me the oil, but I already have a coney "oil" (serum) that I'm trying to use up because I like coconut oil so much better, so I just went with the DC. It contained a cone (I was cone-free at the time), but I've since gone back to cones anyway and haven't needed to use shampoo in months (co-washing). I use the DC once a week and love the scent and texture. I'm sure the conditioner is good -- it must be great for detangling. :p
Trimming feels like a setback, but it will grow back. :) Good luck.

I am running into many more splits than ever before. I've been waiting for it, sure that it's due to pony tail damage of 3 and 4 years ago that has finally reached to the ends - Lots more splits that are multiple along the shaft instead of at the very end. This is occurring on the hairs that would be on the outside of the pony, as the ones that would be on the inside are without splits and there is barely any tapir to the ends. I s and d almost daily, now.

Hi, I'm a bit a of an old, new"waister" (and beyond). I've been in this category since I joined TLHC. I started at waist and it took 6 years to reach TBL with rare trims along the way. What started as a micro-trim before the Winter Solstice 2012 ended with 4" gone, mostly the taper of the fairytails. I was sad to loose the length at first, but now I'm happy with the shape of it and ready to pamper it like crazy and reach TBL again with less fragile ends. That's only 4 inches to go, but that can take me at least a year, so I'll be hanging out here for the journey, for encouragement and inspiration. :waving:

Well, I am technically at waist. I was trying on clothes and caught sight of my backside in the second mirror. I pulled my hair straight, and from what I could see, it hit the narrowest part of my torso. It looks bottom-of-bra-band. I am actually going for BCL straight first, then past classic straight, so that it falls tailbone curly. I just don't like to say butt-crack-length when I tell people. It's embarrassing. I don't usually embarrass easily, but this is a weird phrase.

My trim put me back at just-past-waist curly instead of well past, and about two inches or more from hip, but that's all right. :p I've lived with waist-length hair for almost a year now, I can deal with it a little longer. I actually like this length, even though it's still not "long enough" (or even long). I think I will be staying in this thread for years.
Took a picture this morning on slept-on hair. I liked the way it looked, and it was my first picture of my hair curly since my trim, and I needed a length picture for January to compare next year with. I chose this shirt because it ends exactly at classic, which is possibly my goal -- but I'm not sure yet, I may go for longer. (And I like the stripes. There's no point going for straight stripes anyway because my curls will never bounce up completely evenly. Three more red "stripes" to go until hip! That doesn't seem so far away. But tailbone does seem very far away.

I just hope I won't lose too much curl as it grows. I'm sure it will weigh down the roots as it gains length but I'm hoping that below shoulder, or maybe APL will always curl like this. Though I suppose I'll learn to deal with texture changes as they come -- I've given up on understanding my hair. I know what you mean. My hair has always been naturally beachy-wavy, until I moved to the desert. I can't believe how straight it is now! I've just learned to deal with it and appreciate it instead of mourning my curls. I suspect the dry climate is the culprit, and when I move back to a more humid environment, my curls will return. In the meantime, I'm enjoying sleek and straight!

And here I complain that the midwest is practically a desert... But I grew up in a rain forest, so it's not surprising that everyplace else feels dry to me.
It was really weird tho when I moved straight from rain forest to actual desert. It took a really long time to work out a routine that was even close to what I thought of as normal moisture levels.

But curlier! You'll have to post pictures so us straighties can admire the springs :D.
Since my hair has always been straight and fine, the humidity changes don't do anything really obvious to anyone else. But dry air makes for nastier tangles and even more floating bits. Hot humid days means my hair will pretend to clump and stick together just the teensiest bit more, so it's less like some weird self defense perimeter and more like actual hair in that it doesn't levitate a couple feet in all directions.
If my hair were coarser, it'd probably be more obvious. Instead, it's almost invisibly fine, so the massive halo is usually not visible even to me. Which does not prevent it from tickling people who dare to get close to me when my hair is loose... I have secret ninja attack hair.

A warm hello to all of you :D
I finally reached waist again - for the third time now I suppose, after some trims. Now my ends are okay, so I start growing my hair down to tailbone. There's a newer picture here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=10921&attachmentid=1682).
I have time ;) and will trim regularly in between, so let's see how long the journey goes.

I'm loving this thread so much I've been reading every single page slowly. I have reached waist for the second time now and it is much thicker with a nicer hemline than the first time around and my ultimate goal is tailbone. Tailbone length to me is like ankle length- a far off dream! I have a long torso and I am high waisted so waist is only about 29" on me but hip is more than 34-36" I'm not sure I have to check. So far I noticed that I need to really care for my ends starting at midback. I have had success with monthly microtrims, weekly treatments, oiling, and heavy use of leave ins concentrating on my ends. I have been using a coney deep treatment mask as my daily conditioner and out of the shower I spray a leave in conditioner, use a heavy Shea butter and oil concoction on the ends, and a coney argan oil leave in throughout. Damp bunning after every wash has helped me keep my ends moisturizer as well.

Hi everyone! :waving: There are some really, really beautiful heads of hair in this thread, and I'm excited to be finally following along here, as my most recent trim last month has kept me past waist and there's no more chance of yo-yo-ing above and below WL. I've grown from collarbone to waist in two years with only small trims, so while I expect this part of the journey to require much more care and trimming/maintaining, I have high hopes of reaching TB eventually. Happy growing, everyone! :cheese:

Did we kill this thread? How sad. :p It's been so active lately.
Ah, well. General update: I'm... inordinately happy with my hair at the moment, it feels very soft. I'm currently trying to use up a bottle of leave-in and probably using a lot more than I'm meant to, but damn, that thing works. It was in a braided bun all day but now I unbunned it and am running my fingers over the end of the braid. So soft.
Also, I do think I've managed to convince a friend that shampoo isn't necessary. And introduced her to conditioner. She doesn't seem so freaked out at the idea that I haven't used shampoo in months (... am not feeling the need to clarify yet, though I'll get around to it eventually), and she actually co-washed the other day. Hehe.
I won a secret hair battle recently. This girl, a boarder at school, had thick, black, blunt-cut hip-length hair that was absolutely gorgeous. She cut it back it APL. I suppose she just felt like a change, because it looked so healthy. Ah, well. Now my hair is longer than hers. I need to find a new opponent.
And I'm wondering whether a side part is do-able on my hair.
What's going on with your hair, people?

At the moment I'm quite happy with my hair, too. It's red again after I finally hennaed my roots some time ago. I'm keeping it in a bun most of the time because I'm studying all day and it gets in my way otherwise, but when I take it down in the evenings it's great :)
But I wish winter was over now, because of that dry air I have to fight against electricity sometimes... Another reason to keep it up.

More happy hair here! I have chosen to forever ignore the underlayer/canopy difference. Trimming the underlayer has made no difference. Just trimmed mine to right below hip, so I have about 4" to go to tailbone. I needed to do it, and decided not to wait and risk damage to the good hair by the bad... I'm glad I did it now.
Found some rose scented coconut oil, and I'm about to try it for the first time! Also just got some EO Rose and Chamomile conditioner, can't wait to try it out, and I'm trying shampoo bars for the first time! YAY! Lots of stuff going on. So far the shampoo bar I am trying is working out great.

I am at hip, and suddenly keeping my ends in shape is so much more difficult. Just had a trim a month ago (1/2 inch) to even it up and there were not many splits then. But last week I spent more than an hour snipping splits. Is it the dry cold snap? Is it the new product (Organix coconut condish) that I used for a week that left my hair so silky? Or using a shampoo with cones and no conditioner (once) that totally dried the ends out? (Forgot to take my own stuff with me. OOOps, won't do that again) Or is it the pony tail shredding damage that has, finally, reached the ends? I had splits that were feathers and splits that went 2 inches up. And many. Haven't had this many in over a year and I check frequently. Here is a thought. This time I checked for splits without conditioner and without mineral oil. I wonder if the conditioner and oil kept it all together due to better moisture and when that was gone those hairs exploded.
Sooooo, I am wearing hair up til the middle of March, then another small trim and maybe I will not loose any length. I grow so slowly, as it is.

It took me probably a year and a half to get from waist to hip, but I've been dancing back and forth between hip and tailbone for the past 2 years. The first time I hit tailbone my ends were thin and scraggly. Trimmed up to almost waist, took better care of my hair (more braiding, more BBB brushing) and the next time to tailbone was thicker. Trimmed a few inches again and I'm just now getting back to where I want to be. My ends are at tailbone, and I'm hoping I can get to classic with smooth ends.

neko_kawaii, that is so gorgeous! I love your colour.
I had very fluffy and flyaway hair yesterday after I took it out of its braid. Well, when I'd combed it out for the night I put in a smidge of coconut oil on the length. I rarely oil lightly these days - usually just do a mega-oiling right before washing. But omg, this morning when I woke up and took my lightly oiled hair out of its braid - wow! What a difference! It was so smooth and shiny and lovely. YAY.
Then I hid it away in a braided bun thing because my roots didn't allow for wearing it down today. But still. It was lovely to see how much my hair adored that coconut oil. :)

Lippytoes, I had the same experience with coconut oil. I just got some for the first time about a week ago and I've been putting small amounts in. I like the result.
So far the shampoo bar I got is working out OK... I think this new routine will do me for a while. Now that my hair is past hip, it's just been not as happy with my old routine. I was reluctant to change since that's what has gotten me this far, but my hair was insistent I do something new. My ends were threatening to dry out and that would be no good!

Hm... Still have soft hair. My biggest problem with my hair since I joined LHC (never realised I had a problem before) has been its dryness, but for the past couple weeks it's been like -- Who are you and what have you done with my hair? There's this crazy amazing softness that isn't going away. Makes me feel giddy. I guess I've finally found something that works -- but what that is, I've no idea. Maybe it's all the cones I've been using recently -- I'd cut them out of my routine as an experiment for a few months. Or maybe it's all the leave-in I've been layering in as part of the Use Up Your Stash challenge. Ah well. I'm definitely not complaining. *touches hair*

As the summer abroaches, at some point at least, how do you all protect your hair? Do you have any experience on the commercial leave-in sun block products? I sort of think hair color is a crock ;) but my hair ranges from medium ash brown to platinum blonde and a whole lot of shades in between. The overall look is markedly darker than yours in indoor light, so if forced at gunpoint to pick just one I'd call it ash brown (which I think sounds dreadfully romantic, but apparently a lot of people hate it). Your hair is enough lighter that I'd lean towards blonette or dark ash blonde.
I think I'd lean towards 2a for type. It looks like your wave count is similar to mine, but the more I do curl friendly care, the more it's visible that my wave pattern only hits about 6-7 wavelengths at waist length if you count the extremely subtle waves that start at my scalp. And those waves are some of the easiest ones to pull out of my hair down to about shoulder length... so if I were washing with a method that disturbed 'em, I'd look like I had more like 4 wavelengths at waist. My average wavelength is in the 6-8" range, and pretty much every other person who has responded to wavelength polls has a lot shorter wavelength.

Id call you a dark blonde and a true 2a beautiful is also another way of describing your hair!

I think I'm at hip now (maybe 1 more inch would make me more confident about saying that) but I think I'm going to get an inch off in a week or two :( My ends are just getting more dry no matter what I do and they're all tangley too. Oh well I guess. I'll still be past waist.

Hello! I recently passed Waist and am excited for my journey to hip and beyond. Here's a recent pic -

As you can see, my ends are slightly past waist. Hip on me is about where the bottom of the picture is. I'm hoping to reach hip by the end of the year. My goal is to trim in June and then trim in December if needed.

Agreed. Amazing hair, patienceneeded!
Took this picture today because I felt like it. Some days my hair feels long! I should probably put it up now but I'm loving the feel of it down my back.

Thanks.
Yeah, WO is interesting. I had lovely soft curls when on it (though I only stuck with it for about a month, I wonder what would have happened if I'd tried for longer). It wasn't really curlier, but more defined.
Maybe you had a little product weighing your hair down... If you normally CO or CWC.

Thank you, kitschy! Yes I coloured it some weeks ago. I felt the need to change something after my Grandpa dies, who loved my hair so I didn't want to cut it. It's not so much darker, the light does a lot about it, but a lot of people doen't even notice the change.

Slinks quietly in and pulls up a chair. Hi, folks, I finally belong here. My hair is well below my last rib and almost to the top of my waistband in my skirt. I'll be here awhile, sipping my tea and hopefully quietly growing.

Here's my update!:)
The first pic is my December length shot, and the second one is from today. The top of the jeans is where I classify my hips as hip. :)
I think it looks like my longest layer has grown a bit, but most of the new growth is higher up... Do you think so too?

Welcome, hanne jensen! And I second Vintagecoilylocks - no need to be too quiet. *g*
bunzfan, your hair is looking lovely!
I blogged about this, but thought I'd mention it here, too - Thursday was my three-years-of-growing anniversary. Three years since I cut my hair to shoulder length, and this is where it's gotten me. Fingers are approximately marking BCL, which is my goal:
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k626/growingmyhair/IMG_5569_zps48b47f90.jpg
And apparently my hair looks much fuller and nicer in general before it's completely dried after a shower. Perhaps I should start carrying around a mister bottle!

Their description mentions no teasing.
I think on my hair the effect might wind up a bit patchy the first few times, and since I have a giant head, a lot of elastic headbands are too small. So for me, it's probably not worth the effort of learning. The method for this style looks very similar to headband curls, and it may be worth looking at articles about that. (my head measures 24" around, and most manufacturers assume adult heads are in the 20-22" range)
In general the look seems inspired by a lot of vintage hairstyles, so you might also find threads on vintage hair helpful. It seems particularly 1940s inspired, and my hair tends to find the whole notion of doing 1940s very funny and it tends to get pretty slithery. But I know PiffyAnne has fingertip length fine hair and she can get good results, so it may well be my hair is still too short. (most vintage lovers would say that normally 1940s hair was *really* short by LHC standards, but women with fine hair would often use rats or hairpieces to fill out their fine hair too)
If I want a vintage look, I usually go with La Dolly Vita's Little Black Dress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNcEt-mTVKM) updo for inspiration. The way she shows it would be good for late 1930s to early 1940s because of the side part and asymmetry. If you do a center part, it's more 1920s in feel, and I've seen 1920s hairstyling articles describing this exact style for long hair. Her Rainy Day Tuck and Roll (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r5RO29BKbI&list=PLF328B7C305D1780C&index=5) might help also.

I have an exam tomorrow so of course I'm procrastinating like there's no tomorrow, so I thought I'd post something here. I haven't been around much lately but I'm still working my way slowly towards tailbone. I know I passed waist length a while ago but I'm not really sure where hip length is. I think tailbone is around where my shirt ends in this picture, or possibly a little lower, so hopefully I'll be there by the end of the year.
http://i.imgur.com/jSxre75.jpg
Also I just measured in and I'm around 34 inches, with tailbone being around 38 or 39 inches. I'm not too exactly with my measuring, but I think it gives me a nice idea how much further I have to go.
Edit: sorry for the huge pic
