View Full Version : What if long hair looks bad on you?

Or not as flattering as a shorter style? Do you cut to a length that is better suited to your face shape or do you stick to super long hair?

Maybe you could try some face-framing layers?

The only time I've ever seen long hair look bad on anyone is if it's in really bad condition. Those are the few times I think they should cut if off.

I agree with the suggestions of getting face framing layers, because I understand that long hair can sometimes just hang there. However, everyone should do what they please with their hair, it's what makes you happy! :)

Do you cut on impulse? I like that bold fearlessness(is that even a word).

Yeah I think that too:) It can be tricky if what you like is not exactly what make you look your best but whatever:cool:

I'd go for some face framing layers at first and then see what I feel about it, and if I still thought I looked bad I'd cut, if my hair wasn't too long, like bsl or something. If it was longer I guess I would keep it just because it was finally long :p

I also dont think long hair can look bad on anyone. Its how they style it that counts. Some layers around the face can basically mimic short hair. Creating some volume around the face, in various ways, when doing updos can also help.

I grow my hair for me. It's as much about bodily integrity and enjoying the way it feels as it is about enjoying the way it looks.

I don't really care what other people think. If they don't like the way I look, they can look at something else.

I definitely think some people look better with short hair than long hair. If I thought long hair didn't look good on me no matter how I styled it, I'd definitely cut it. I mean, I'm growing my hair long because I like the way it looks, not just for the sake of having long hair.

Right now I look more adult vs the maybe HS age I looked like with short hair. If at some point there is nothing I can do to make it suit me, time for a cut

If I felt my long hair didnt suit me or looked bad then I would cut it. There is no point in having long hair for the sake of having long hair.

I know shorter hair suits me... I had it for about 15 years now, the last time I had long hair I was about 10 years old (It was classic length) so I am a little worried that long hair wont suit me as an adult! I am currently between SL and APL and I am loving it so far, but if I started hating it I would definitely consider the chop.

By the way I am not aiming for classic again haha waist will do me nicely.

I like long hair because I think it looks good on me. If it doesn't look good I would cut it, what is the point of having long hair if you don't enjoy it and it makes you hate how you look?

I think lustrous, healthy long hair looks beautiful itself, even if it doesn't compliment the persons face as well as a short style could.

And like someone else mentioned, face framing layers can always help.

As long as you enjoy your long hair I would keep it (with updo's you can make it appear short). But if it would really depress me I would defenitly cut it short(er).

August 27th, 2010, 02:38 AM
To be honest I looked my best with chin-length hair. At the time it is just an inch or so short of APL but I am not even considering chopping back. Mainly because it feels better now. I like how it tickles my back, I like that I can touch it and play with it (very gently of course :p), I like that I can set my hair in various ways. I like it because it feels me, if you know what I mean.

I've never had hair this long or longer as an adult and I am in the process of growing out dye and layers so maybe once it is all under control again it will look even better than that short cut. :)

I feel the same way as Bene. I just prefer long hair in general, as a look, for almost everyone.

For myself, I've had long hair before (about TLHC tailbone length), and I know how it looks on me.

I know and have been told that short hair looks best on me. The only reason I am growing is b/c it was pixie for about 12yrs and I wanted/needed a change. My goal is BSL and the journey is interesting. However, if I absolutely hate it once I get to my goal I *will* cut it off again.

Although, I know it will be short again at some point....whether I love it long or not. There's just a certain sassy-ness and spunk that pixie hair has.....and it matches my personality.;)

Or not as flattering as a shorter style? Do you cut to a length that is better suited to your face shape or do you stick to super long hair? Not flattering according to who? Are people telling you that you would look better with short hair or are you looking in your mirror and not liking what you see? Don't be influenced by others if that's the case. Do what YOU want. It's your hair and your body. Please yourself first.

I also dont think long hair can look bad on anyone. Its how they style it that counts. Some layers around the face can basically mimic short hair. Creating some volume around the face, in various ways, when doing updos can also help.I personally feel that long hair can look good on anyone. Long hair with dried, fried, split ends, well no, that's not good. But healthy, well cared for long hair can be good on anyone. There are so many styling options for long hair. You can add face framing wisps, side swept bangs, or long layers for example. There are so many lovely updos. I think a head of long healthy care can make the plainest woman look beautiful.

I grow my hair for me. It's as much about bodily integrity and enjoying the way it feels as it is about enjoying the way it looks.

I don't really care what other people think. If they don't like the way I look, they can look at something else. This :applause I believe if you love having long hair and it feels good and right to you, you will look good with it. It will belong to who you are. I feel confident, feminine and am comfortable with who I am with long hair. With short hair I'd feel old, frumpy and like I had sold out who I am.

Do what feels right for you. If you are a long hair at heart, then go for it and rock it.

I don't believe you can look really bad with long hair (especially since you have the option of layers/bangs), but of course there might be more flattering options for a specific person. I'm convinced my hair will be long for a very long time (speaking of long as can-be-ponytailed-length) just because it's lower maintenance than anything else on my fine hair. And I hope to get that Professor McGonagall-look some day anyway :D
However, if I should discover I hate it some day, or it's really unflattering, I'd surely change my haircut to something more suited to my face shape.

Ursula

A lot depends on your reasons for long hair.

My hair is long in part because I'm too lazy for anything else. If I were to cut my hair short, even intending to keep it short, in a few years it would be long again because I would never get around to keeping up with regular haircuts. The same issue would apply if I were to try "look short" tricks like cutting face-framing layers or bangs.

Of course, if someone finds that they're unhappy with long hair, either how it looks or how it feels, and they have the personality to keep up with haircuts, then short hair is probably the right choice for them.

But "how it looks" is far from the only determining factor in why people choose a hairstyle. My hair is long because I can't be bothered to cut it, and it is generally in a bun because I can't be bothered to take more than ten seconds in the morning to twist it up and fasten with a stick or two.

I agree with the "healthy long hair is a beauty in itself" camp. I also know if it were shorter I wouldnt oil, SMT etc or treat my hair like the famous "old lace" so itd ironicaly be in less good condition as I wouldnt have given up dye.

I have had friends tell me "youd really suit a pixie cut" but I wouldnt as I wouldnt be unhappy with it as it isnt "me". I have also had friends who have adored my long hair too when it was at Waist.

If I wanted a faux pixie I can put my hair in a tight french pleat and let my chin length bangs out.

I can do waterfall braids, giant sock buns, five strand braids and allsorts of fun things so surely at least one will suit me :p Shorter hair would not afford me such freedom.

I could also get a half cap wig to give the illusion of APL hair if I so desired.

So all in all even if different style suit me my personal happiness never goes out of style.

LHC has made me a healthier person all round as I use less chemicals, do natural treatments and even eat better. So basically if others dont like my hair well thats ok, or if I suit something else thats ok too, I have to make me happy first!

I look pretty good in short-short hair, but I can mimic that just by putting my hair up. I think my long hair is in and of itself beautiful, and sometimes I wear it down hoping that people will enjoy seeing my beautiful hair and ignore my ugly old face.

Anje
August 27th, 2010, 09:31 AM
As others have said, it partly matters based on your reasons on having long hair. If it's only to look good, cutting is definitely an option. If there's a balance of looks and personal desire to have long hair, wearing it up when you want to look your best is always an excellent option, and a bun is probably as aesthetically similar to a pixie cut as you can get without all the work/cutting/blowdrying/product that goes into having short hair.

Thankfully, my hair seems to be more flattering for me the longer it gets. So far TB > hip > waist > BSL > APL > shoulder.

StormiDoodle
August 27th, 2010, 09:32 AM
If I thought long hair didn't suit me, I would cut it, but only after giving it considerable thought. I really did not like how my hair looked from shoulder-mid back length, but I didn't cut it because I wanted it to be even longer, and at waist, I'm not sure I'm going to like it longer, but still am going to give it a try, and just likely cut it back to waist length. :-)

If ( I ) didn't like myself with long hair I would cut it :) That is my thought right now never having hair longer then APL or APL for very long, and spending most of my life with chin length hair. I'm excited about the journey of growing my hair as long as it will grow, I have a funny feeling I will feel differently in a year or two sticking with this journey, I think it will be a different relationship with my hair type of experience..

I would never cut my hair for someone else , I don't think that will every change.. :)

Speaking as a hairstylist myself, I totally agree with Kathie. Long hair that is well cared for will suit anyone. Long, lustrous hair has a sexual allure to it, it shows that the person who has that hair is in good health and would be a good potential mate.

With longer hair, you can hide imperfections on your face, and if you have bangs they can actually accentuate your face shape and draw more attention to your eyes.

If anything, its much harder to make short hair look good. Without any hair to soften up the face, you are left staring at every single harsh feature or imperpection on that face. Only someone who has very good clear skin and symmetrical features can pull off short hair well.

thanks you, Carolyn, you are so right here.

also, I am striving with recurring desire to chop off my hair and reading up on whom suits short hair cut I found out that height and wide shoulders don't go well with short hair - I have both so this sounds like a solid reason to grow.

but some girls with really thin straight hair should better cut it, honestly, those tresses do look bad

I was able to pull off uber short hair when I was younger but now, I think it makes me look my age though having hair that's short is convenient for cycling, running, snowshoeing etc. Long hair suits me just fine and I think makes me look a bit younger than I am :P

I think it depends a lot on the hair style. Personally I prefer my hair at around waist line. That is the ideal length for me. And I always ask the hair dresser to thin it, otherwise they dont look they way I want them to.

i don't think people look ugly at all with long hair... if you have a long face, you fan layer it or so... in fact i think women look more attractive with long hair... and so do men... i think it's a question of preference, i think maybe if you think you look ugly than you know, cut it...but i personally think you should't cut it...

Glad this thread was started because I've been in a quandary about my long straight hair and very round face. I love the length, but the style looks boring. I tie it back when I go out, but it makes me look too child like - not good when the wrinkles are starting to set in.

If I had face framing layers do you think I could get away with keeping the rest unlayered.

I don't look that great with long hair to be honest. It really accentuates my nose and makes my face look kind of "drab". But with bangs and short layers near my face, it looks great. It's just that long , straight-ish hair on me looks a bit too harsh. The face framing layers and bangs fixes that completely for me.

If long hair looked bad on me, I'd cut. Because even though I like long hair, every time I'd look in the mirror, I'd remember that it isn't as great in reality. It'd also have a negative effect on my confidence because - even though I wish that appearances didn't matter, they do immensely - and people would treat me worse than they would if I were looking my best.

Capybara
September 11th, 2010, 02:03 PM
There are so many different styles you can do with long hair to make it flattering - like Igor said, parting it in a different direction, or putting it up in a cute bun or braids, even cutting in some layers or bangs/fringe, or changing the hemline to blunt or u-shaped or a v. I find that I look best with my hair pulled back out of my face - hence my side bangs, where I used to have straight across, blunt bangs. There are a lot of options if you want to have long hair, but think it doesn't always look the best for you.

EtherealOde
September 11th, 2010, 03:01 PM
Very short hair only looks good on women with small faces. Everything else is just a matter of finding the right style in an updo to flatter your features the most if it doesn't look its best when down. There are so many ways to do your hair when it's long that everyone has several individual style options for their particular face shape. The trick lies in creativity. If you just pull your hair straight back into a bun, no matter how good it looks from the back it will pretty much look the same from the front no matter how many different buns you know how to do. Instead, think of different ways to change the profile of your head from different angles. Take a look at some different hairstyles from period paintings/sketches to get ideas.

I think if long hair doesn't "look good" on you, it might be time to analyze why you think that and try to remedy the problem. That is, if you still have the desire to remain a LongHair. Is it that you think your hairline is too severe with it pulled straight back? Try parting it or adding bangs. Is it that it has less volume the longer it gets? Layers can change that. If my 2 cents counts for anything, I suggest you take some time to find a workable solution before you decide to take the plunge and chop. A haircut takes a few seconds, growing it back takes MUCH longer! :)

I think it depends on your priorities and whether or not you care more about the look or the hair or if others are saying it then whether or not you think it looks good is what should matter.

If you get some layers around the face and shoulders as someone mentioned, you can let the long part of the hair lay in the back and pull the short layers forward to give the impression that you have short hair.

This is why I went through a phase--right before I joined LHC--when I considered chopping all my hair off because it's been long since probably 1965--since I was 12 or so. I don't KNOW what my adult self looks like with short hair. Maybe I DO look better with short hair.

But I decided to keep the hair and not find out. I know I looked horrible in a pixie when I was 8.

And there is this woman who photographs events where I work. She is older--maybe my age, maybe younger, but she has older skin (genes? smoking?); anyway, she had beautiful long, long hair which she wore down. Her hair was probably my length, but she's shorter, so it looked longer; you know how that works. Very striking.

At the opening of school events this year, I saw that she had cut it all off. And I'm sure it's convenient for her or something, but she suddenly looked so average. I wonder if she regrets it.

We are "supposed" to cut our hair shorter as we age, but I love the rebelliousness of long hair! I had a friend several years ago with a 90-year-old mother that wore her long white hair in a huge bun on the top of her head, and she was remarkably beautiful. Definitely not average looking!

IMHO, I think that there are so many more options with long hair in a style that may not be the most flattering than with short hair that is cut in a style that doesn't look good on you. As others have written, with long hair, you change the appearance in front with bangs, layers, parts, etc. I recently re-cut some longish, face framing layers (CBL) to soften my profile. With short hair, I would have to wait for it to grow out & try to get through that awkward grow-out period.

I'm another one who thinks I actually probably look a lot better with short hair.
I still grew my hair from chin-length, because I didn't feel like myself with short hair. I'm longhaired. I love having long hair; and it's not as if I look dreadful with long hair. Strangers admire it and tell me never to cut it - no one ever stopped me to tell me never to grow long when my hair was short! :p
I'd never rule out cutting - we're constantly changing after all. I was happy with short hair, until I wasn't. Right now, and for the foreseeable, I'm longhaired. My long face won't change that!

It depends - if you want long hair and don't mind if others like how you look with it, that's one thing, but if you care more what others think, then it's another. But remember, a lot of people amongst the general public don't understand long hair and therefore say they don't like it.

Now that I'm older, I actually think I look better with longer hair than I did when I was in my 20's and could pull off a pixie better. I second what Carolyn said, I think I'd feel frumpy and older looking with short hair.
My jawline is less defined, my face more round and older looking and getting wrinkles, and the longer hair softens all that.
And I agree with what others said about cutting in a fringe/bangs or face framing layers to mimic a shorter look around the face-if one looks better with shorter hair.

I agree that long hair can't look bad on you if it is in good condition, just need to find face framing ways of wearing it. I have seen people with long beautiful hair but they wear it so flat against their face it looks.. strange and quite unattractive. give it a bit of volume, frame your face with some waves. The most attractive long hair to me is thick and wavy, and I have seen thin hair transformed into voluminous hair, quite beautiful.

I've concluded that its way too soon in my journey to rule out long hair as unflattering to my face. People may say that, but I'm not convinced at the moment. Hair takes forever to grow, but only a second to cut off. I'm going to work on taking care of it and experiment with collarbone-length pieces on the front to break up the length a bit.

Thanks for all the replies...I tend to get sissor happy :)

I was told all my life I should have bangs, that I would look horrible without them. 10 years ago I decided to grow out the bangs. I think it looks way way better on me without bangs. I don't listen to what other people think anymore. If I thought bangs were better, I'd cut them. If I thought short was better, well, first I'd try some different styles for my long hair just to make sure. If I was sure, then I'd cut.

All length long hair is probably not the best choice for my round body, round face.

Oh well.

My round body isn't the best choice either but right now it is what it is.

Oh please, that is not round.

Just my opinion, but I think short hair is more difficult to look good in. Your face has to be a certain kind in order for anyone to pull off super short hair.

If you love long hair, there are ways to experiment with styling , bangs, and parting. I had short hair once and looked soooo bad. Really.

Who is saying you don't look good with long hair? Family member? Friend? Magazine?

I think long hair looks good on every one.

Or not as flattering as a shorter style? Do you cut to a length that is better suited to your face shape or do you stick to super long hair?

This is a very all or nothing question. I do not think there is one right or wrong answer, but rather a plethora of possibilities. To me, it sounds as though you are asking this question to people who wear their long hair down all of the time. I suppose if I were to wear my hair down all the time I would constantly be reminded of how it looked on me, therefore I may, at some point, come to a conclusion that long hair looks "bad" on me as you put it. I honestly do not think hair long, short and anywhere in between, looks "bad" on people. I think hair, itself, can look "bad" if not cared for properly. I do not think long hair would look "bad" on me. Besides, if it did, I don't care. I would not cut to a more suited for my face style because, well... I do not want to. It is all about preference.

I look DEFINATELY better with shorter hair. Not to brag, but bobs and I = match made in some very romantic comedy movie. I look great with bobs! Whereas with long hair, if I wear it up or away (80% of the time) I look..... well, way less purdy. Not even bangs can help that. That is not only my perception, but from those around me too-who only say that when asked, and out of love.

Do I mind? Yes.
Am I going to cut? NO.

I love the feeling of my hair! I want to grow long hair! (not megalong, but waist or hip would be nice.) I don't feel exta feminine with longer hair, but the possibilitie to stuff even more accessories (hairtoys and flowers) in one outfit!

I am glad to read I am not the only one, and to be honest I am a bit surprised how many people say they would cut if shorter hair was the nicer option for them. Makes me feel less of a mainstream vain sheep when I have bad hair days and dream of th scissors. :)

whats the difference between a pixie or a bangs plus bunned hair anyways?
i would so love to get my blunt bangs back, they look awesome on me, but im just not willing to let go of my circumference.
i freaking want ALL the hair to fall down my back when i wear it down. beeing tall and having a slim build and face, that gets covered easily when i wear a middle part, the nearest comparison most people can come up with is sadako ( or samara morgan in the american version of the ring movie)... i dont suppose its meant to be a compliment, but then again im weird anyways and i prefer that to any of the common beauty standards of highlighted, layered midback hair.
i mean come on, how many of these girls who cut their hair to compliment their face shape end up buying extensiosns again anyways? so lol, no.

I look great with bobs as well. If cut right, they're nice and thick and not triangly at all - but that's only when it's straightened. Wavy? Not so much. If I would be willing to heavily style, yes, it would look nice. But I'm just not prepared to.

I personally think that very few women look better with short hair than long, with the exception of some black women who look as if they are meant to have short hair a n d look silly in extentions.

However, that's my taste and even not consideting different tastes there are a lot of reasons people may prefer a hairstyle that is not the most flattering on them. Convenience, fitting in to a job culture, some women even prefer to look less attractive than they know they can, because they don't want to attract men for whatever reason (temporarily ) because of a break up, or they are with somebody and don't watch deal with the hassle of being approached by other men, or they are too attractive to be taken seriously without making themselves look severe.

*sigh* and my long hair would be so much nicer if it had some body and be in the 2 family.... With your 2b/2c hair I don't think I'd ever go short, I LOVE long wurlies and curlies and kinks and kroinks. And I'd never straighten it. Ever ever! ...Although, I am sure you look nice with bob, but the straightening, bleeeeegh. :)

Yep, exactly, the straightening - gosh, don't remind me. I was nuts then, I think. This coming from someone who only discovered her wavy hair in her mid to late thirties!

Stories like that have given me false hope for years, you know? That one day, I'd use another shampoo than usual and POOF curly wavy hair like my uncle and dad have! (well, used to have, in case of my dad.) "Sadly" I was raised with a pretty good hair routine, so I'm doomed to be in the 1-family forever. Oh well. But it must have been a lot of work, what you did to your hair, to keep it from being curly until your mid-30s!

Why do I always end up derailing? Sigh.

People say short people shouldn't have long hair. Screw that noise, I'm five feet and it only took me three years to get from a bit past shoulder to hip-length.

I also love braids and half-ups, so my hair doesn't just hang there all the time. And if you don't care about doing things with your hair, that's fine too because this is the Long Hair Community, not the Intricate Updos/Braids community.

Do what you want with your hair. I only have a problem if it looks damaged, but that's more "someone needs conditioning/trimming," not "CUT YOUR HAIR NOW BECAUSE IT LOOKS BAD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD."

Derailing is quite all right. *I* like it.

Anyway, yes, I crimped in my teens and just blew it dry until it was straightish enough. I never owned straighteners until my thirties. Thank goodness.

but some girls with really thin straight hair should better cut it, honestly, those tresses do look bad

Ouch. That's really just mean to a hairtype that has its own beauty.

I have family members who repeatedly and determinedly tell me that I look bad with long hair. And I don't care. It makes me even more determined to have long hair. Longer than I would otherwise, too :) I like it, and it lives on my head! Just wait until they realise I am going to stop dyeing it as well....

I agree, thin straight hair takes a lot of flack and it's lovely! I think of it as silky and ethereal.

I think anyone can look good with long hair, it doesn't have to be all one length though for every face shape. IMO, there are few women who actually look really good with short hair. Examples that come to my mind are Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.

This looks like a very old thread and I haven't read the whole thing, but I'll add my 2 cents:
If you want to emphasize your features (cheekbones, forehead, chin, neck, whatever) without long hair surrounding you and stealing the show, there is absolutely no need to cut hair off, you can always put long hair up! ;)
You can hide all of your hair in a crown braid or a bun, or show off some of your hair and hide the rest in a comet-bun or plaitception or a faux bob. Endless possibilities!
But if the hair is already in a pixie, there isn't much you can change about that quickly without wigs/extensions.

I do look better with short hair, it suits my face, unfortunately due to the way my hair falls it requires straightening ever day to look halfway decent. I prefer longer hair, the only reason I've had it cut back in the past is because I didn't know how to look after it properly and the ends became all dry and split.

Well I feel a lot more attractive with long hair....... short hair made feel avarage in bad way and just plain boring.

Now I do think that somewhere between short hair and super long hair, lets say mainstream long, totally flatters the face a bit more, but that just an opinion.
