Tolkien fans...what hairstyles do you consider to be "elven?" I have included some illustrated elves (including my avatar) to get things started. :)

I'm not even a major Tolkien fan, but those images are lovely! I may have to appropriate a look or two for myself.

I am going to give the first one a try, however, I need to go gather some leaves to fashion the head piece :) I shall return with pictures in a couple of days!

Gorgeous! I'd love to see some of this re-created by our board members! I'd like to try either of the last 2, but I don't have the length yet, and I'm not sure how I'd do them.

Anything from 1a-2c hair, in a V-hemline, pinned up the sides with leaves and flowers is pretty elven to me.

Then again, this IS a challange for the curlies to prove me wrong.

By the way, all of the characters depicted here are male. In order from top to bottom they are:

Thranduil
Glorfindel
Glorfindel
Thranduil
Legolas
Fingon
Celegorm

Pretty much every half-up, flowers or leaves are optional.

I´d also love to see pics if any members give it a go. Maybe I´ll try something with autumn leaves soon...:)

I think various types of fishtail braids are Elven, although that could be because I'm being influenced by the LOTR movies. :) I know several members on here have done the 9-strand (was it 9 strands?) Arwen braid.

Half-ups with braids, and possibly some decorative elements like leaves, that's what I'd consider the most elfenlike. ;) Gosh, so pretty.

I definitely think the half-up fishtail 'looks elven'

Here was one I did a while a go with a leather oak leaf slide:

I'm in love with that Fingon drawing. Really, where can I find a man who looks like that?!?!

I haven't felt for a cartoon since I was 7 and cried to be Miss Super Mouse .. oh.. :(
As for the thread, I'd say almost every half up (and according to those drawings, some face framing layers too!) and braids, small braids
Oh, pointy ears are always a plus! I'd love to see pics if someone tries! I'd do it on myself right now but with my length is just... depressing

Oh, super mouse *sobs*

To me, anything wispy and soft, but neat at the same time. Also, intricate - I can easily imagine one elf reciting epic poetry aloud while a group of them braided each other's hair. ;)

I squealed when I saw this thread. And oh my, those pics are very pretty! I think I recognize some of the artists as well. The movies have definitely influenced me into thinking that half ups/loose waves with optional leafy/flowery adornments are more "elvish." I'm going to have try some of those styles, and keep an eye out for more pictures to use as inspiration! Will post a picture when I get around to playing with the styles.

Ok I am gonna try some of these!
I wanted to last time I watched LOTR. :o I am such a geek, but, proud of that!
Such a great hair movie! I love that all the Elf hair is right here at my fumbling hands to try! Awsome post!
Dont get mad if I come back cussing that my arms hurt and I just cant figure the braids out!

I love all those hair styles! I wonder if you need quite thick hair for some of those or if it needs to be real long. Not all of the pictures are quite clear what the hair style is like.

Fantastic styles! I love to see long hair on guys, even if they are fantasy guys!

The first one (half-up with a braid) is easy to do on my hair and I do it quite often because it protects the canopy while showing off the healthier hair underneath. Just need some fantastic hairtoys (and my fringe to grow out - some elvish magic would come in handy there!).

August 24th, 2010, 03:17 AM
Lovely pictures! :)

Elven seems to be almost any half-up (or at least some strands taken from the face to the back of your head), small braids and leafy decoration optional, as well as circlets.
I think a tapered, V or strong U hemline is more elven/fairy-like than blunt-cut because it looks softer, but feel free to prove me wrong ;)

OK, dark, coarse, curly hair is probably the most un-Elvish thing on Arda, but I'm already trying new hair-dos today, so... :eyebrows:

This is a try at the first drawing you posted, the Thranduil sketch, made with the materials I had on hand (ie, no leaves, no fancy tiaras): a butterfly headband and a dragonfly barrette, in a herringbone braid half-up, with two tendrils of hair pulled next to the face. Sorry if it sucks, herringbone braids are the bane of my existence!

My take on OP´s pic #3: front (http://www.forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=798&pictureid=80328), slightly from the side (http://www.forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=798&pictureid=80327)

My strands aren´t as defined as in the pic. Maybe product might help with this? But on the other hand, I´m trying to imitate cartoon hair, so...

I have to admit that I love Anime/Manga hair, especially long-haired male characters. The artists create some very intricate and attractive hairstyles. I also spent rather a lot of the LOTR films fascinated by the Elvish hairstyles and hair jewellery. I've always liked men with long hair, my DH had long, black shoulder-length hair when I first met him, he cut it all off one year, during a very hot summer, and has never grown it back - don't think I've got over the trauma LOL.

I think your hair is very Arwen-like. Your re-creations of the Elvish hairstyles are lovely, and I really admire the Elvish-style hair ornaments :) I'm not sure I'd ever be co-ordinated enough to manage something like that, I've never been able to do very much with my hair.

'Arwen-like'... now there's a compliment! :o Thank you so much! :smooch:

Actually the ornaments are just random pieces I picked here and there, but they were the only ones with a 'nature' theme that would work for an Elf! :p

Ok, I attempted the 3rd one, though it looks more like a cross between the 2nd and 3rd (the styles are very similar, in any case). With these particular anime styles, looser braids at the top is the key. I think I mostly succeeded with that part. It's also nice to have a gentle wave to increase "flowy-ness." Ah, and another important thing is to minimize visible parts lines. Most anime artists (including myself) have a tendency to disregard parts, and characters are drawn with insanely thick hair. :p

Anyways, I simply French braided from the top of the scalp really loosely, adding almost random strands so that it was kind of messy while braiding. For the lock from the center part in the 3rd picture, I randomly picked up a smaller wisp/strand close to the front and added it to my braid when it got near the top of my ear. I actually ended up french braiding over my ear, instead of behind it, but oh well. I can always tuck the braid behind my ear. It took two tries on both sides to get the strands defined enough so that the style could be seen with dim bedroom lighting. I think the right side turned out better, so of course I took a picture from that side. After braiding most of the hair around the ear area, I did a looser standard English braid for the rest of the length.

Oh, and ignore the general state of my hair. I only finger-combed it this morning. :)

Ahaha, it was a mess, by my standards! I was adding strands and dropping random wisps all over the place. Though I suppose you could call it an ordered messiness? My general rule was that if a strand dropped out while I was french braiding, it stayed out. Adds to the general wispy, flowing look.

Okay, pictures for #5! I took them at night, so please excuse the bad quality.

To explain the reason for the tiny English braid on top, hopefully you can see that I sectioned off the very top of my hair. I ended up braiding it, since I didn't have any suitable elastics to tie off the section. In the original picture, the top section is tied off with cord. Ended up combining the top braid with the fishtail/herringbone. Yay, my first herringbone braid! It was time consuming, and the stupid weather decided that today is the hottest day of the summer. I basically made up everything for the back, since the picture didn't show that side. Assuming that the picture is of Legolas (questionable since the guy has bangs) I figured a herringbone using hair from the side of the head would be a good bet. None of my braids, other than the herringbone, are tied off.

Overall: easy style, the herringbone takes the longest amount of time unless you're used to making them. If anyone wants a more thorough breakdown/steps, just ask. I can type that up and draw some diagrams

Alright, poked at my memory and the dragonfly barrette is from Oberon Designs (got it from the Swap Board, but they have the same design in their store) and the butterfly headband I bought in Sfera very recently (there was a brass-coloured one too, I think).

And sunrain, I love your braids. You have the perfect hair for these styles, I'm so jealous! :D

Oooooooooh, those are gorgeous!

I really wish I could justify purchasing something like that, but I wouldn't have any occasion on which to wear it (in the house while hoovering doesn't really seem special enough lol) and my hair is maybe too bushy and not flowy enough for a headdress to look good in it.

@sunrain I really like your elven plaits. I can never get loose plaits in my hair (I don't know if this is because it's still too layered or because it's too thick/bushy with too much of a mind of its own) but I wish my hair sat nice and flowy like yours :)

Fingolphin
August 25th, 2010, 08:17 AM
Sunrain, that picture is indeed Legolas, not because it is necessarily movie-accurate, but because the original artist said it was. If you think about it, I'm sure he would have worn more than just one style sometimes anyway.

sunrain
August 25th, 2010, 12:08 PM
@dfotw Thank you! Though you have certainly proven that curly hair can look elvish! I thought your herringbone was beautiful, and way to accessorize! I'm going to dig up the flower wreath I made for my 7th grade Renaissance Faire, and putter around to look for appropriate hair toys. I might look into getting the dragonfly slide you have as well, hahaha.

@mneh Thanks! Of course, I would complain that my hair was not sitting quite right that day, hahaha. Silly hot weather, and all. :P Based on your avatar pic, it looks as though you could attempt some of the styles. A lot of artists I know and watch have drawn beautiful styles for shoulder length/bsl hair. I should find some and post the pictures here, haha. I'll draw some as well, and add to our style collection. And as for loose braids in your hair, I would think that it should be easier (and prettier) to pull off a "looser" look with curlier/wavier hair. If you braid it without pulling the strands too tight at the top, I think it could have a really pleasing effect. Pull out a few curls to frame the face, or for the "sideburn locks," and you have an easy, elvish look! Your layers might present a problem, so perhaps you should try some shea braiding creme, or something similar. anaissatin has the recipe on her livejournal account, http://anaissatin.livejournal.com/10922.html. I think you should at least try a simple half up with a few braids, and show it to us!

@Fingolphin Ah, of course the artist would say that it is Legolas. I could tell from the general look, and the blue shirt that he wears under his tunic. Yay for artistic license! :D I would hope he changes his style every once in a while. He only had one hairstyle change in the movie! I remember Arwen and Elrond definitely had more, haha. Where did you get the picture from, anyways? I like to keep tabs on the artists with pretty art, hehe.

@camara Thank very much :) I wish I could see your picture, but I can't, since I'm too new of a member, or something.

Sunrain, did you know there is actually deleted footage of Legolas with his hair all down? It can be briefly glimpsed on the ROTK EE first appendices disc, second section, I believe, about adapting the book to film. Anyway, it looks really cool!

@ Fingolphin Found it! 20:57, "From Book to Script: Forging the Final Chapter." I remember reading about that scene, but I hadn't actually watched it. And OMG, the angelic version of Sauron is too beautiful for words. The artist also only drew angel Sauron with shoulder length hair, haha.

Squee! I am in love with all things elven, so I'm enjoying this thread!

My "special occasion" hairstyle is usually a half-up braid, with a few skinny braids throughout the rest of my hair. I've been told it looks somewhat elven, except when it gets frizzy. Apparently elves are supposed to have perfect frizz-free locks. :p

I wish I could do the herringbone braid! I know how, and I've successfully braided other things (string, rope), just not my own hair. :(

Thread for Ringers. Brilliant.

My favorite elven accessory is hair vines. Anything sort of winding and organic looking is appropriate. There's a shop near me that makes a pearl-embellished comb (http://www.pearlsinternational.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=128) that is super gorgeous and doesn't snag.

So I've got long straight hair perfect for doing elven hair. But I don't have the ears, and that's what I really want. I wish I had deformed ears so I could justify getting this ear surgery. @ restourceful Aha, I figured she must be a member! She has such beautiful hair.

I approximated the style from the Fingon sketch this time. I wish my hair was as thick as these illustrated guys, but oh well. For the part circling the head, I made two smaller braids to bulk up the volume a bit and tied them in a knot before fastening off with an elastic. (Basically, I did the barrette fold (http://www.dressytresses.com/hair/gallery/instruct/barrette-fold/) from dressytresses.com to join the two sides.) Proceeded to make two small braids on the left side, and one small braid on the right. I like the asymmetrical look, but I also didn't part my hair on the right side in a way to have enough hair to make a second small braid.

@ FingolphinAhaha, yes, go ahead and pretend your avatar is really a self portrait when you have enough length! SL, or maybe a tad longer, would be a good length to try it out. Maybe closer to BSL/mid-back, since I personally would have just enough length to fasten the back and leave a decent tail. How long is your hair now, anyways, and what color? *curious*

@sunrain: i find that the side braids are small, tight dutch braids, or that's what i got when i studied legolas for the style years ago.

Great thread, I almost forgot about these styles! I had been wearing half ups and braids quite a lot at the hype of my lotr geek period a few years back when the movies came out :D

They look great, anything with braids and half ups does look elven to me :)

Here's another one:

I will have to try something like this soon, maybe later today if I wash my hair. I am starting to have the length again now to do these styles :)

@ suffer-cait Eh? Which style were you referring to? If you are talking about the pictures where I did "Legolas with bangs," it's just really hard to see the parts and stuff since it was covered by other locks of hair. There's a break down of Legolas' side braids (http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/legolas.htm) on dreamweaverbraiding.com, which I followed. Dutch braids would certainly work, but are much more tedious in a small area. I've also never done a Dutch braid before, hahaha. Shouldn't be too hard, since I'm pretty familiar the English braid. Hmm, that's got me thinking about Dutch braids in future styles...

@ Fethenwen Show us some pictures of your styles! And lovely picture of Galadriel, I know I've seen that one around.

@ suffer-cait Forgot to mention, I also have the tendency to make the side braids directly behind my ear, rather than a little above. That's probably why you can't see what I did with the side braids. It's not the first time I've made them, but again, I tend to make them too low.

@sunrain thank you for the encouragement :) My shortest layers are about mid-ear length so they tend to stick out of plaits, but I need the practice at trying new hairstyles, so I think I'll have a go. I am not skilled in hair manipulation of any kind so I will need to practice quite a bit, so thank you very much for the advice and tips :) If I manage to produce anything half-decent, I'll post and let you see (eeeeeek!) :)

I have to admit, for years I've envied those Elven hairstyles and never thought I could attempt one, because my hair isn't straight and flowy, but seeing @dfotw's elven styles made me reconsider. Plus quite a few medieval pictures have long-haired ladies with waves of some kind, so hope is certainly not lost :D

@Fingolphin Thanks for the LOTR info and pics, I'm finding it all very interesting. I was happily listening to the film soundtracks yesterday and browsing LHC, it makes a great combination :)

You're welcome, and your approximation to the Fingon sketch is great! And thank you, I hope this encourages more curlies and wavies to try these styles... Galadriel was commonly depicted with very wavy hair, for example!

And the dragonfly slide is gorgeous and so well made, too! And they have more 'Elvish' styles, like feathers, butterflies, etc... :enable, enable: :D

That's right, mneh, we curlies and wavies can also be Elvish! From you avatar, your hair reminds me of one of my fave Mediaeval-ish paintings, 'The Accolade' (http://www.revilo-oliver.com/Kevin-Strom-personal/Art/BlairLeighton_TheAccolade.jpg), so hope is far from lost! :)

I am intently ogling that dragonfly slide; it is going on my wishlist of things to get in the future. I wish I could justify buying it right this minute, but I've just bought some Flexi8 clips and I must try to be good :wail:

Gosh, thanks for the link to that beautiful painting. I would love to have hair like that, the dress is pretty too ;). I keep hoping that as my hair grows longer, its own weight will help to control it and make it more "flowing" - did you find that happened as your hair grew longer?

Yes, the weight of the hair definitely helps to make it more flowing, so that the upper part will be less wavy and smoother, with the tighter curls/waves more confined to the ends (like the painting, for example)... I couldn't wear my hair loose until nearly waist-length, because it quickly became a frizzy mess around my face, which I couldn't stand, but now it lies more or less well until past shoulder-length, where it curls in earnest... weight and length help a lot with that!

Sunrain, I unfortunately (almost on a whim) last month decided I needed a change and cut it off. Instant regrets. It's not about 2-3" :( It's brown in color. There's a picture of the hack on my profile page. All this elvishness REALLY makes me want my hair back.

Gulp, :couch: I went and took a look at the braiding websites that were linked to earlier in the thread and now I feel ever so slightly intimidated. I had no idea that plaits could also be parts of such complex hairstyles.

Although, it is very nice to finally have an answer to how some of the Elven plaits/braids are done, and to know that it is possible for them to be replicated at home, and that they're not just film-magic :)

I'm convinced that some day my DH will come home from work and find me struggling and caught up in a plait-gone-wrong, from which he will have to extricate me and my trapped fingers, and my explanation of, "I was trying to be an Middle-Earth Elf" will probably make him laugh himself silly

@ mneh Are your shortest layers just around your face, or are they all around your head as well? Face framing layers can make a style look softer! And yes, practice makes perfect! I am going to attempt a 5-strand braid for the first time today, and maybe a couple of Dutch braids. There are so many things you can do with braids, as you have mentioned. We'll see how they turn out, haha. "The Accolade" is such a gorgeous painting, and the lady definitely has an elvish look! Notice how just a headdress changed her look. Many of these elvish styles are incredibly simple, though some of them are just time consuming because of all the little braids. :) Length definitely helps weigh down my waves. When I was younger, and the times my hair was shorter, I had huge hair especially in high humidity! Now on some days, between the length/weight and WO, my hair looks really sleek and straight. Though I do have some wavy, loose spirals at the ends. :)

@ dfotw You might want to try Fingon's style on your own head! I think the natural volume of your curly hair will help bulk up those braids a bit. The artist just had to give him these huge, loose side braids, which I will never be able to do on my own hair. Having straighter hair means you have to be neater with your braids, most of the time. Though, as nearly improbable as those thick braids would be in real life, I'm also guilty of drawing characters with impossibly thick hair. :D

I checked out Oberon Designs website when you first mentioned it, and look at all the pretties! I think I'll be doing some saving so I can buy a few in the future, haha.

@ Fingolphin Aww, but on the other hand, you hair will be healthy? Also, now you have some more incentive to keep growing! I can't view other people's profiles and picture galleries yet because I don't have 100 posts. I don't remember if I have 60 days by now, but I have some work to do before I get to 100 posts. I'm going to have lots of fun viewing pics after I get there, though! :D

Buhuhu, the thread has been slow today. Must remedy that at some point, but I've been busy myself. I want to try an Elrond-inspired style, but I haven't had enough time. I'm also trying to figure out the darn fingering for the 5-strand braid, grrr. It's also starting to get dark, so I might try that particular style another time. It's hard to take pictures at night when you don't have proper lighting and your camera complains there isn't enough battery to use flash.

@Qwackie Pshaw, try anyways! We are often our own worst critics, and for some reason everyone else seems to think that whatever it is we are doing is absolutely brilliant. If your hair is really sticking out because of your layers, try braiding cream, or aloe vera, or oiling. I did comment on this thread about braiding with layers, and tips on how to make braids smoother. Let us know if you're having trouble, because there's always a way to wrestle braids into shape! There are also ways of incorporating your bangs, though I'm not sure what your bangs look like, so I can't make any suggestions at this time.

@Fingolphin Ahaha, what a generic guy's haircut! I can't help smiling and giggling to myself, because my brother just got a trim a few days ago. He's never been inclined to grow out his hair, and I don't think the idea has occurred to him, sadly. But he's always running around, so whatever. *shrug* There have been a couple of times where it's gotten on the longer side for a boy's cut, but that was simply because my dad didn't take him to the salon for a while. I can't wait to see what your hair will look like!

By frogs I mean the little "loops" or "circles" down his separated pieces of hair, as can barely be seen in these photos.

Yes, my layers are all around my head, as well as at my face. My shortest layers are at the back of my head - I am growing out a heavily razor-cut and layered style; when I wore my hair straightened this type of cut was the only way to remove a lot of the weight and volume from my hair. However, now that I'm wearing my natural texture, I actually WANT all that weight and some of the volume LOL. At any rate, lots of wispy ended layers make it hard to make tidy plaits at the moment. Mind you, as you advise, there is no harm in practising my plaiting so that when I have longer hair I will have built up some muscle memory :)

I hope my hair reacts to length the way yours did and that it sits better, even in humid weather. I wonder how the hairdressers on the LOTR films kept the actors' wigs from reacting to what I would suppose would be fairly regualr humid weather in NZ (I'm guessing that as NZ and Ireland have similar climates, the weather there would be quite like the weather here, and we have a humid climate).

@Fingolphin thanks for the pics of Elrond hair, I could happily look at photos of Elvish hair all day :)

@StormVixen Yeah, Rosie would work well for you! I'm sorry that I can't think of any other suggestions right now, since I'm not sure what your length looks like.

@Morgaine Your hair looks so pretty! The braids still can still pass as herringbone, but I guess you will work on getting smaller sections. Your pictures came out so much clearer than mine, so I have no idea what you're talking about. :) My camera is being weird, it always thinks that there isn't enough battery to take a flash picture, even if I have just replaced the batteries. Back to your hair, I'm envious that you don't have nearly as many frizzies as I do. Your loose locks look so much smoother than mine, and your strands don't clump (though maybe that just means I have to rinse my hair, haha). Your parts also don't show, whereas mine were showing a bit (perhaps because of technique and/or hair volume). Anyways, your braids still look lovely and sleek. Great job!

Pulling hair across the part, huh? I do that too, but I don't always succeed. Do you pull the hair into place while you are working? And that trick doesn't always work for the roots of braids. Thanks for the tips!

@ Fingolphin Haha, I hate navigating that site. Still, it's always good to try and link back to the original artist when you can!

I finished an 'elven'-hair-thingy yesterday, now I need to make a style and get it photographed.

I haven't actually tried them myself yet, so this may not be worth much, but I did try to analyze the styles and give some directions as to how to try it at my website, Imaginary Styles. (http://imaginary-styles.iwarp.com/)

Just click on Fellowship of the Ring on the right and scroll down until you see Elrond. :)

Good luck!

I'm really itching to do some elvish do's, but I just don't think I have the patience. Also, I'm really bad when it comes to braiding my own hair. ;) But, once every fall the local cinema sends a LOTR marathon, so I'll probably do something then. My little attempt at cosplay. ;)

Back when I saw ROTK at the movies (two days before the world premiere, with both Viggo Mortensen and Andy Serkins present, hehehe) I did a Legolas do. :p It looked neat, but was easily beaten with those wearing pretty elfen dresses. ;)

@HikerTrash What techniques were you using? Knotting? Twisting? Braiding? I usually have to make sure my part lines are clean, untangle braid strands regularly, and generally smooth/comb down my hair as I'm styling.

I took the top, middle part of my hair and did a herringbone braid. Then, I took the side parts, and did a smaller herringbone braid on each. Then, I rested my arms for a while! :D I then threaded the side plaits into the hair just on top of the central braid, and twisted them around, over and under it, a couple of times. I tied all three of them at the bottom with a simple elastic at the end.

HTH! :)

Yeah, they do, and it is awesome! :D We have this thing called Cinema Day, where they have lots of special stuff to draw people to the movies. It usually start with a LOTR marathon going from midnight to about 10 am. (You have no idea how hard it is to stay awake in the middle of ROTK. XD).

It would be so much easier to just have someone take the pictures, but my family already thinks I'm nuts in terms of my hair; the picture taking would just give them new material. :D

Also: herringbone braids. Every time I try them they look downright awful. Anyone have any tips? Especially on making smooth herringbones (and braids in general) on curly hair.

@Neddy Haha, I know my sister would probably just outright refuse to take pictures for me since she doesn't like cameras. I might be able to coerce my brother to take pics though, and maybe my roommate when I go back to school. My family is generally aware that I experiment on my hair, lol. I think they at least partially accept it because I'm female, they can all appreciate nice hair, and I have the most temperamental scalp/skin in the family. My sister does nothing fancy with her hair, and it's so pretty after a wash. Talk about hair envy within the family! And my mom still has fantastic, shiny hair even though she's gaining a little more silver. But I'm ranting, haha.

Herringbones: I learned a pretty effective fingering for herringbones on youtube. I was looking for tricks on picking up the next strand of hair, really. The video I watched had a possibly Filipino woman braiding it on herself. She calls the braid a fishtail, so you might want to try searching under both names. The trick with all braids is to keep the tension as even as possible, make sure your strands are even, and try to minimize tangles. I don't know how well this advice works on curly hair, but I tend to refer to dreamweaverbraiding.com. There is a link to tips on making braids smoother in the braiding instruction section. It is a great site for learning to braid!

Eeeeeeeeehhhh!!! I LOVE this thread! I just happened to test drive a simplified version of the 9 strand Arwen braid (http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/Arwen.htm) on my daughter this morning. Her hair's at classic (1b, m, iii) and the whole thing took me about 25 minutes.

It's two french braids secured at the nape of the neck with an elastic. Then I wrapped a small braid around the elastic to hide it. The long braid starts with 9 english braids; then braid those 9 into 3 braids. Finish with braiding the 3 braids into one braid.

I'm in love with this thread!! The other day I totally did my hair all elven-like, but I didn't take any pictures. :( I'll have to recreate it sometime. And maybe use some of these cool ideas.

I think when going for an Elven hairstyles, the basic idea is to leave a couple strips just in front of the ears, braided or not. It also helps to pull back just enough hair so that your ears show. Throw in a couple small braids, (especially fishtail) and you're good to go.

I love all the elven hairstyles I've seen in this thread! I wish my hair was longer and that I was thinner and more elvish looking, it's so pretty. :)

That's great news about The Hobbit, I was worried it would never get made. I really want to see Smaug. :D

Martin Freeman certainly looks like a hobbit, I think it'll be perfect! :D I'm really excited now!

Also, nov 5 is LOTR marathon here, so now I'm trying to figure out how to do my hair, and how to persuade someone to make me a cloak. XD

I agree about Martin Freeman - I think he could make a good Bilbo :D
I'm also wondering about the hair and the cloak. The hair I think I will manage somehow, I have lots of LotR hair accessories, and I know how to do fishtail braids with a little practice. The cloak, on the other hand, is a problem :p

Hiya neighbour! :D Come come! It's always lots and lots of fun! :D

It is! As long as the seats are occupied by a bunch of geeks (who cheer in all the right places, for instance) and not stupidly loud 14-16 year olds hyped up on energy drinks like last year. I'm crossing my fingers that we don't have to suffer a repeat of that...

Just saw this thread, loved doing my hair up in elvish styles when my hair was long. :) And I had to chime in because my husband is just now flying back from Oslo today! He was there for a week on business. :) Our companies head office is in Oslo.

He said it's already flurrying there!

Btw here is me rocking a dwarf style! :) (with my short hair!) Where is the dwarf lovin!

I tried doing the fishtail braid Legolas sports all the time, but I kinda messed up:

It's the first time I attempted a fishtail braid ever and on myself it's even harder because I can't see what I'm doing. I wish I was as good as some of you....

@Kittee: You rock it! Looks very cool especially with the headband and the piercing look in your eyes

Yay, go Oslo! :D And yes, it's flurrying alright. Just hope we don't get full scale winter just yet :p
/hijack, moving back on topic

The more I read/see in this thread, the more I want to modify my costume plans to go all out on marathon night, but with two weeks to go, I don't think I can manage it. I like the thought of a circlet of some kind though...
The thing is that, being a 11 hour marathon (almost, 10 hours and 40 minutes or something like that. Three movies, plus intermission inbetween), I'm invariably going to end up going into 'comfy mode' at some point :p

PS: Maverick, that's a pretty good attempt for your first fishtail braid ever! It takes a fair bit of practice to get it just right (at least it does for me...and it kills my arms in the process). Keep practicing, and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it :D

Maverick494, that is very good for a first attempt at a herringbone braid! And your hair looks lovely and Elven! :)

Liave Ekeli, a good, cheap, quick, comfy alternative to a circle is a thin metal hairband worn as a circlet... there are some really cute ones out there! ;)

Now, this isn't strictly Elvish per se, but I think if anyone can give me a hand it's you Tolkienites...

I've bought a set of LotR mini-swords to use as hair-sticks, so I want to hear suggestions for Elvish-themed buns... I was planning to do my normal buns with maybe small braids as accents, but can you help me think of something more Elvish?

These are the hair-toys in question (the six came together with the stand, the other one I had bought from the Swap Board before, it's the same one as the one on the far right)...

i love how they styled Legolas' hair in the movies. the little side braid is awesome. :)

dainaleeo2, I'm going to be wearing them this week for the 'Wear all my hair-toys once' challenge, so I'll post pics! And if I saw someone else wearing them, or something similar, I'd totally geek out too! :D

Maverick494, I got them from eBay. I was lucky to find an auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140466007741) for them at a reasonable price, and even luckier that the vendor had a second set available after I was outbid. I'd been looking for something like this for a long time, so I can assure you that if you search long enough, you'll find them! :)

So far, I'm thinking that rope-braid buns are going to look more Elvish than normal or English-braided ones (no herringbone braids so early in the morning, please!), but I'm still looking for inspiration... :eye:

I started with a half up hairstyle, but used an elastic instead of a barrette, and then I did a ponytail flip. I used a tool that's like the Topsy Tail: http://www.amazon.com/TVTimeDirect-Topsy-Tail-Braidmaker/dp/B001Q93XV2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288470380&sr=8-1 Here's a picture diagram of what it would look like if you were flipping your whole ponytail instead of just half your hair (the picture doesn't show using a tool though): http://blog.crystalmood.com/2006/08/25/hair-styling-diy-5/
Once I did the pony flip I just pulled a long piece of hair from underneath the pony tail out of the hair that was still down and wrapped it around the elastic to hide it.:)

I think it would work great on straight hair! Since this hairstyle starts with a hair elastic it should be more secure than if you rolled your hair and tried to secure it with pins.:)

You could do pin curls, at least towards the front for a look that's close to Elijah Wood's hair in the movies. As for the back, I'm not sure. Maybe just toss it in a bun and not worry? Or if you're doing his Lothlorien cloak you could just cover it.

It was all a last minute thing, so I didn't have the time to learn how to do pin curls. XD Ended up with a nautilus bun in the nape, witht he front parts twisted back and wrapped around the bun. And halfway through the bun got annoying so I ended up wearing it loose. ;)

Really wanted a cloak, but couldn't exactly make on in an hour, so I used a dark gray quilt blanket thingy. It looked pretty cool, but no hood though. ;)

I really like those especially 1 and 5. I like the idea with the leaves! Should try that sometime. I love Tolkien's Elves! They're actually one of the reasons I'm growing my hair long lol

I think long (obviously) styles that are very natural either with all the hair loose or in a natural, not too perfect half up are so elven, also the leaves or a simple hair jewel (think Arwen: silver and Celtic looking). And braids/plaits, should be neat but not too perfect either to have that breezy floaty natural look.

WAAAAHHH, you guys have posted some amazing styles since the last time I was on the board! I haven't been experimenting much since school is in session, but I figured I should post some directions for the rope rosette thingy I posted a while back. You can find pictures of the style in my album, if you can't find it in the thread (page 14, post #137). Might add illustrations eventually.

1. Separate top half of hair as though making a normal half-up.
2. Take the top half and divide this section in half horizontally. You might need to start clipping off sections to keep them all separated, so clip/tie off the two sections close to the nape. :)
3. Take the section closest to the front/your face and divide it in the middle as though making a center part. Tie these two sections off.
4. Take the section behind the two parts you just sectioned off and make a rope braid as though you were simply making a roped half-up. Tie it off, if you wish.
5. Roll the rope into a bun starting at the tail end of rope. Pin the bun. It will probably take some tweaking to hide the ends.
6. This section is probably a little confusing. Untie front sections and comb/brush them back so that it is as smooth as possible, but still keep them separate. Take one section and pull it diagonally to the opposite side of the head so that the edge kind of tucks under the top edge of the rose bun. Do the same with the other side, so that the two sections are overlapping. Try to keep the top as smooth as possible if you like that look.
7. Another potentially confusing step. Bring the two sections around the bun and crisscross them under the bottom edge of the bun.
8. Make a rope braid with the two sections. The beginning of the braid should appear as though it came from the same braid that makes up the bun/underneath the bun. Be careful not to pull too hard, as you might mess up the bun. Tie off the rope, and you're done!

I forgot to mention that I left some hair for the locks in front of the ears before crisscrossing those two front sections in step 6. This is optional, lol.

Thanks for sharing these! I think I could manage some of these looks, but I need those pointed ears to really make it work! (o:

Fingolphin, I have the "weird cowlick" too! My mother said I had a double crown? Does that make us double royals, or what?? LOL! Sorry, I am sleep-deprived, and feeling silly!

I really wish we could get better views and backshots of those styles! Know where they can be found?

Loepsie posted another LOTR tutorial! See HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SalqLb7z94).

Anyone tried this??? I'm terrible at fish tail braids, otherwise I might...

I want to see someone post some pictures of this one! :D

Well, part of the reason I chose that pic was because it looks vaguely like me. ;)
I actually thought so too, I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Thanks, Fingolphin! Its just two lace Dutch braids clipped in the back with a claw clip. I'd actually like to try that tutorial posted by TinaDenali, but I don't think I have long enough hair, nor the patience to herringbone braid for so long.

My response to Thranduil: "Oooh, an artichoke! I love arti...oh. It's leaves." I shouldn't look at this stuff while I'm hungry.

I think its safe to say that almost anything with small herringbone braids is Elvin-like, and arm killing!

I love the hair styles in this thread :o Here is my contribution, just a herringbone half up, secured with a flexi 8. And braid waves! What my hair looks like after 3 French braids during the night.
I may need some more practice with the herringbone. :o

Looks great! ;) Aren't elven looks lovely? I can't wait until my hair is long enough again to do those styles.

All of them have pretty hair! I have always been very interested in elfs because they always look so flawless and natural and unique at the same time.

Oh, and The Hobbit starts filming in less than a day! Here's to all the great new hairstyles we'll see, especially the elven ones! :toast:

Also, it appears that the roles of Thror and Thrain have just been cast, presumably for a flashback sequence!

I love these type of hairstyles. I've decided to have a go and make the headdress for the very first picture and try out the hairstyle. It might take a while to make though...

Tolkien's works I would definitely recommend reading in English, because it is absolutely and intrinsically tied to the language. There is not a single word that he didn't pore over and insert for exacting reasons.
