Hi everyone! :waving:

I'm not sure how I found this forum, but I'm glad I did! I never knew that there were long hair communities out there. This is awesome. I love how the internet makes it possible to find people with similar obsessions, even when it comes to hair... :joy:

I'm one of those people who always wanted long hair, but fell into the trap of cutting it every 6-8 weeks. After about a year or two of ridiculously frequent and most of all B-A-D experiences with hairdressers I decided to just leave it. Now I haven't let anyone touch it since June 2008(!) and while my hair is not in perfect shape, at least it's somewhere between APL and BSL at this point.

I recently made a conscious decision to continue growing it, and now I'm dying for some hair advice and support. My hair is extremely dry and sunbleeched i.e orange after a windy, dusty, sunny summer in Egypt... I instantly stopped dying and straightening my hair (serious addictions since I was like 12, that's about 9 years!)... and I can't decide whether I should cut it and "start over" or just go through this phase of really lame hair and do what I can to make it better.

Anyway, I'm sure I will spend lots of time here... I feel like I have a lot to learn. :flower:

Hi Helwa :waving:
I'm a newbie too (after much lurking). I'm the opposite to you though - haven't been in a hairdresser's in about 15 years or so, I just trim the ends when they look too ratty and snip off splitty bits from time to time. I only just discovers that this is called S&D (search and destroy), and that other people do it too!!

I didn't even attempt to deal with it myself yet, but maybe that would be a good idea. It's just that I have a lot of grown out layers and weird things going on in my hair, and for some reason the shorter parts are the most worn out so I'm not sure how to trim it without making it look uneven. How do you do it? :D

There's instructions here (http://community.livejournal.com/feyeselftrim), which is more-or-less the same as how I trim my ends (my hair is wavy so it's not too much of a big deal if it's not cut exactly dead straight).

For the split ends I wrap a lock of hair over a finger and slowly pull it through, snipping off the split ends that pop up as I go. You can also twist a lock of hair and snip off the ends that pop out of the sides but that feels risky when I try it (like I could easily chop the whole twist)

Wow, thanks! That seems simple enough. I think I will give it a try. :)
