View Full Version : Ponytails and sex

I'll wait while your mind rolls in the gutter. I deliberately chose that wording for the title.
Ok. The guy next to me at work has hair a little longer than APL, he wears it in a ponytail. Last night, he turned to me and said, "Random question. Why do women with ponytails wear them higher on the head, while men wear ponytails lower (pointing to his, at his neck)?"
I thought about it. I have seen a few women with the holder at the nape, especially older women, but usually we do wear ponytails in the middle of the head or higher, and I've seen one or two men with ponytails higher up, but the vast majority seem to wear them at the neck.
So, where do you wear you ponytail?

I'm female. If I'm goin out while wearing a ponytail, it's usually high up. This is an extremely rare occurrence.
When my hair was shorter, plain ponytails were easier. I wore low side ponytails half of the time, and high ponytails the other half. I've never really liked the look of a plain ponytail on *me,* but they look lovely on other people! :)

I am a girl. I always used to wear mine at the nape, but I now much prefer it higher up on me. This may change as I have been admiring some nape buns recently.
Random extra: DH hadn't heard of the word 'nape' before. He thought I was talking about somewhere rude the first time it came up.

That's what I thought, too :D
My ponytails are usually pretty high up - not on the top of my head, but still pretty high, with my hair slicked back into the tail. If I'm just hanging around the house and want my hair out of the way, though, I leave it parted in the middle and ponytail it at the nape, because it's easier.

I'm female and my ponytail starts high on my head and gradually migrates to the middle of my head. If I wear it on my nape, it makes me look tired or something. I just don't like the way a nape one looks on me and prefer the way a higher one looks.
Dh is male (obviously) and wears his ponytail high on his head because he doesn't like it getting caught on his collar. He says it makes worse tangles if he wears it on his nape. He doesn't care what it looks like as long as it's out of his way when he's working.

Female here, I wear ponytails when I have enough hair to wear one up higher. If I'm going to have a style on my nape it will probably be a braid rather than a ponytail.

I picked cheese, because I don't wear ponytails all that often anymore because they aren't all that comfortable for me to wear anymore. If I wear a ponytail at my nape, I get some nasty tangles that will turn into mats if I ignore my hair. With higher ponytails, I get headaches because of the weight of my hair. Additionally, high ponytails have the tendency to really swish, which is a rather irritating, headache-inducing demonstration of the laws of physics. :p I like the feeling of swishy hair, but not when it makes me feel awful.
Thanks to Torrin Paige and her YouTube channel, I have taken to making braided ponytails. As long as I braid snugly, it won't swing like a ponytail will and won't give me a headache as long as I make the hairstyle in the right place on my head. I usually wear them as high ponytails because braided ponytails worn at the nape make me feel weird. I've noticed that I can braid further down with a braided high ponytail and it makes my hair look somewhat less tapered.
When I wore ponytails, I preferred to make them at the nape, but I like both ways. Higher ponytails/braided ponytails are more suitable for summer, as they keep my hair off of my nape.

*raises hand* Gutter mind here!
I start almost everything at the nape or just above it. I can't stand high up pony tails or buns.
Oh, my brother (obviously male) wears his at the nape. Lower than mine and mine is quite low.

I picked "I'm female, I usually wear mine higher on the head."
I haven't worn a ponytail in years but when I did they were higher up. They used to be at the nape until a friend told me it's better to wear it higher up because it looks cuter.

I can only wear ponytails at the nape. If I try to start them higher, they pull and are uncomfortable, or just slip down to nape level anyway. I rarely wear a ponytail out, but when I do, it's at the nape!

I'm female and I don't often wear ponytails, but if I do, I'm just as likely to wear it high as low. If I wear it high, it's usually braided, but if I wear it low, it's usually loose.

August 22nd, 2010, 02:21 PM
I chose at the nape because I rarely wear a pony higher up, unless it is to bun it. However, I rarely pony at all. Usually, I pony and braid just behind my left ear for a cute side style. I usually only Just do a pony if I'm home cleaning, or something. But, really, even then, it's a bit rare and always at the nape. It gives me a headache if it's too high.

August 22nd, 2010, 02:26 PM
I don't wear many ponytails, because I don't like the way the elastic at the top of my hair tangles it. But when I do, I almost always wear them low, because my hair is heavy and it will pull it down to the nape anyway and then look messy. I pretty much only make high ponytails when they're about to go in an updo.
Edit: Oh, right, duh, I'm female.

For a looped ponytail for just hanging around the house, it's about halfway up the back of the head. Regular ponytail is almost always at the nape, unless I have a specific reason to place it higher - I have to be in just the right mood to rock the cheerleader bounce ;) I prefer my buns placed low too; it suits my face shape better.

Occasionally I'll wear a ponytail a bit above my nape, but usually it's low. My hair is slippery so a high ponytail eventually turns into a low one anyway. DBF always wears low ponytails too.

I'm a guy and was wearing mine low. I started to wear it higher when trying to learn buns and braids since it was easier on my shoulder to work on it when it was higher. I remember undoing one of my 1st successful buns after having it up for a few hours and I really liked the way the tail felt as well as the swing and bounce from the tail being up higher. I can't remember the last time I went with a low ponytail. I also don't remember ever receiving a compliment on the low ponytail but get constant compliments from women of all ages with the higher ponytail. (I also thought this thread was about something else).

I have seen a few women with the holder at the nape, especially older women
That'll be me (older than whom? I'm 48).
I don't wear elastics or scrunchies, I prefer the look of a barrette, as I think it's a bit more polished-looking and those only look right and feel comfortable at the nape IMO.

Oh, ok the title got me too :D In fact I have to re-read it several times because I thought that the OP was asking why during.. well; woman wears the ponytail high and men at the nape and I already had a TMI explanation before I saw it has nothing to do with that :o
I wear my ponytail higher because.. it is like a cuter true ponytail instead of a way to just keep the hair together. And I'll better enjoy it because when my hair gets longer they're all gonna end up at the nape anyway

I'm a female and I always start my pony up high and it will eventually slip down to nape, but I only pony at home. For my work I always bun my hair and that is usually at my nape if my bun is too high then I get a massive headache at work and that makes me cry:mad:

Yep. Yep.
It took me a fair bit more amount of time to figure out what it was -really- about, because my mind wouldn't accept another usage of 'sex'. Yes, I am a dirty pervert.
I've worn mid and low. For a while, I couldn't wear anything but mid--too short. And they're still more comfortable for me that way.
Not that I wear ponytails all that often. Since my hair is so curly it just looks like an explosion behind my head.

RachelRain

Nape. Always. Because if I put it higher, within ten minutes it will drag down and start to yank. It doesn't matter how high I try to put it, it'll still do that, so I gave up and I just do it at the nape. It does create some snarls right there, but not too bad, and as long as I take it out and redo it occasionally I can keep decent control over them.

Female here. Usually halfway between the top of my head and the nape, but when i was younger, on the top of my head.
My son's hair isn't long enough for a ponytail yet, but his female friends who have MUCH shorter hair have been wearing them for ages!
I've seen a few men with high ponytails, but no little boys so i just won't do it. It has to be a caterpillar or cornrows (or loose) right now.

Mirsha
August 23rd, 2010, 07:09 AM
I'll only wear them higher than nape cause it has a tendency of getting extremely tangled at nape. Not even a wide tooth comb could save that!
If my hair feels extra slippery that day I'll get a hairloop and flip the base once.
ChrissieM
August 23rd, 2010, 07:15 AM
My ponytails are almost always at the nape. Even if I make one higher up on the head, my hair is so slippery that it falls down to nape-level. I don't want to use tighter hair ties, so I deal with it. If my hair is a few days post-wash, sometimes a ponytail will hold a bit higher up, though.

Male, nape for me. I have worn a ponytail every day (for at least part of every day) for at least 15 years. At first, they tended to creep upwards to become mid height, but as my hair has grown longer, I have been able to make the ponytail lower, whoch has the advantage of making my hair look longer.

No matter where I put my hairband, within an hour it's slipped down to the nape of my neck, so I don't even bother with high ponytails anymore. Nape ponytails are more comfortable, anyway, even if they do make me look a little androgynous. :p

Im a guy and I usually wear my ponytail around mid height to high, I prefer the way it looks. I would do a low nape ponytail sometimes too though, for example when I use a barrette or simply part my hair and put it in a low ponytail. But it would tend to be mid height mostly for me as it looks slightly more dressed up, plus I have to say I do like the way it moves with you.

Finoriel
August 24th, 2010, 10:02 AM
I mostly wear it at the nape. Not because of the optics, it's pure convenience for me. My hair is far too heavy and slippery for higher ponytails. A ponytail at the nape is the only one I can wear ... :p without getting a headache and a face-lift, I mean.
If I do a high ponytail it usually just serves as a base for a braided bun.
The gender differences in how high men wear a ponytail seems culturally influenced to me. The males I've seen who wear ponytails, wear them at the nape or higher. The only trend I've noticed is that males with mediterranean culture background tend to wear them higher than men from other European areas.

August 26th, 2010, 01:16 AM
I put that I wear it higher than the nape, but I only meant a few inches higher. I would never wear a really high ponytail. I find if I wear it lower it comes undone, which is interesting because some have said the opposite, i.e. if they wear it higher then for them that won't hold.
I think that many men wear a low ponytail to obscure neck hair. Certainly that seems to be a common concern on the Men's Long Hair Hyperboard, that if we tie a ponytail too high up we have all these short curly hairs at the back of the neck on display. Probably most women don't have that kind of problem, as they aren't as hairy just there. OTOH, IME those that are often wear a high ponytail anyway.

I very rarely wear a ponytail at all, and if I do the position varies from very low at the nape to very high on the head (not on top of the head though :p). Most ponytails I do because a hairstyle requires it, so it's just the base for a bun.

I, too, hoped this would be a discussion regarding the best ways to keep hair out of the way (or safely involved) during "adult playtime.":whip:
Even so, my vote is with the 20-incher Hair Glove... which means a low nape ponytail. Regular ponytails tangle too much, but wrapping the glove on protects amazingly, it still tangles after a full day of wearing and shifting, but overall, it's pretty much as tame as a bun would leave it.:D

For the majority of high school, a high ponytail was the only style I wore. For most of elementary school I wore it in a ponytail at the nape of my neck. (Middle school I was growing out my bangs and it was chaos.)
Now if I do a ponytail, it's usually at the nape of my neck because of the weight. With a soft scrunchie, it's a lot less damaging too.

Female and wearing my pony tail higher up.
But, my dearest boyfriend usually wears his ponytail higher up as well, if he doesn't wear his hair down. It sooths him really well.
I think it is difficult for a man looking masculine wearing a high-up ponytail, unless he has a masculine face shape and/or a (notion of a) beard.

I'm female and I chose cheese because I never ever ever wear my hair in a ponytale. Never. :)

I'm female and wear ponytails both high up and at the nape, depending on whether I secure it with an elastic (high) or a barrette (nape).
My son, who has longer hair than mine, always wears his ponytail at the nape.

I wear mine at the nape since I normally put it in a scrunchie bun, and I've grown into the habit of putting it there as a result. However, when I used to do ponytails on a regular basis, I'd put it pretty high up, since I thought that was the cool thing in middle school! Before that, I normally wore my hair braided.

I don't really like ponies and like pigtails more, but I wear mine at the nape.

I'm female and I wear mine not high on my head but not at the nape either :) In the middle maybe.

If I wore ponytails, they'd be high. Unfortunately I can't--I can't get them not to sag. Even when my hair was much shorter, I couldn't get them not to sag, and I hate the sagging look so much I just decided not to even try. (For one, I can't get the elastic tight enough--because if it'll go over the doubled-up bunch of my hair as I'm putting it in, then it's not tight on the single thickness of the actual ponytail. I need like a bunjii or something that I can pull tight and fasten, not something I can stretch and pull my hair through)
I think I used to wear my hair in low ponytails when it was shorter and ultimately decided I didn't like it...I always felt like I looked like a dead animal was lying on my back or something. I dunno why because I don't feel like that when I see them on other people, but that's how I always felt about them on ME.
I think the reason men wear them low rather than high usually is that high ponytails are associated as being cute and bouncy on women? Though I have a coworker who got dreadlock extensions and he wears them in a high ponytail sometimes and it looks really cute on him.

Female cheesehead here! :cheese:
My ponytails vary in location depending on the look I'm going for. However, I rarely wear it low (on the nape) unless it's braided as well, because it will drag and tangle very badly...

Male, higher. Not a fan of nape-tails because they're so common. Plus they remind me of computer programmers. :D

Female here (last time I checked). And I wear it both at the nape and higher on the head, depending on how it turns out. And what I'm putting up the ponytail with. If it's a barette, I can only put it by the nape, but if it's an ordinary ponytail holder, anything goes. :D

Haha, you are so right! I visited my boyfriend (who always got his tail by the nape) at work, full of programmers, and just about everyone - male and female - wore a ponytail by the nape. XD

I tend to put my ponytail higher on the head because I think it looks much better. I don't know why but it just looks more put together when your ponytail isn't so low. I would say that more people should be putting their ponytails higher up on their head then on the nape.

Haha, yeah that's why I don't wear my hair in a nape ponytail very often... this is the image I get.

I'm female, I use cheese to hold my ponytail.
IF I wear it, which is very rare situation. Now seriously- if I wear it, it's low at the nape of my neck. Otherwise I look bald:D

At the stage I'm at I live pony tail. Always low.
I'm with Thinthondiel (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/member.php?u=22194), a higher pony tail is 'cute'. Cute and me are two things that will never be considered together in the same thought!

Female here. I don't wear ponytails that often anymore, but when I do they're usually somewhat high. I went through a phase years ago when I often wore super-high ponytails, like the stereotypical image of 1950s teenagers.
The DBF wears his hair in a low ponytail.

I'm female and I usually wear my ponytail pretty high. It feels uncomfortable when I wear it at the nape of my neck.

Female, I tend to wear my ponytail around the middle of the back of my head these days. I wore it at nape through elementary school, then high up, and now it's in the middle.
Ancient Japanese men, and even some modern men, will sometimes wear high ponytails. At least in comics, anyways. :p That's the best example I can think of for men with high ponytails. But these days, I think high ponytails are associated with cheerleading, which is associated with girls. Lol.

I'm a guy that wears mine at the nape. I will occasionally and accidentally wear it about an inch above the nape when I'm not paying attention.
