View Full Version : Up-do challenge!

dancedancedance
August 20th, 2010, 11:08 AM
This one's going to be tricky.

The point is to wear a different up-do (any style; buns, braids, etc.) everyday for sixty days. Post pictures or tutorials on fun styles your wearing to give ideas to others looking for new styles!

I'm starting it off with a simple ponytail (no picture necessary).

Let's go! :cheese::cheese::cheese:

Ah, then you'd love taking a look at this thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=102). It's right down that exact alley. :)

Similar, thank you for showing me that thread. However, one difference is that in my thread, you're not allowed to repeat styles.

Oh, yeah I'm almost 1000 days doing the updo ;)

Not repeating styles for 60 days will be VERY difficult. I'm not sure that there ARE 60 different updo styles :hmm:

Oh ho! A stipulation! There's another thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=43675) like that, but it's no repeating styles in a week, doing the challenge as long as you want. A lot of people don't have as vast a repetoire of things they can successfully do for 60 days. I sure don't. Haha. Well, I could finagle minor variations.

I'm just Nautilus bound most of the time. Good luck with your challenge! If anything, I guess I've pointed you toward places for style ideas.

*wanders back to his very small roulette wheel of styles!*

Whoah. 2 months of different styles every day??
I'm not sure I could manage 2 weeks!

I'll have to come up with a list to see if I can even come up with 1 month...
:p

EDIT:
Wow. I actually came up with a list of 60 things...
However, I'm not sure if I can do some of the things on the list.. Hmm...

I know 60 styles. My hair, however will not do 60 styles at this length. Unless you count variations on the same style; say - a cinnabun and then a cinnabun with accent braids? I tend to stick with the same (let me count....:hmm: ) six styles.

Hey people win things all the time based on technicalities! Roll with it! ;)

How about letting the hairtoy also distinguish between styles? So a cinnabun done with pins, or a fork, or a hair stick, or a ficcare all are considered "different" updos?

To be fair, they do tend to look different.

It'd also give some people an extra excuse to cycle between their hairtoys. :)

60 styles?!

When my hair was all one length at waist, with a fair bit of taper (no major cuts in two years), I had a list of 26 everyday styles I knew and thought were plausible at my length. I remember trawling through the articles here and everything looking for new styles, too! I could do 20 of them at that length.

August 20th, 2010, 09:30 PM
Yeah, I just don't see how you could do this challenge without relying on "technicalities" as Gumball said. I know I couldn't do it.

kittensoupnrice
August 20th, 2010, 09:33 PM
I managed to come up with 60 styles. Of course, some of them are "doubles" as in, regular cinnabun, and braided cinnabun, but I was surprised at how many I could come up with.

I could post my list if anybody likes. :)

I'm thinking about trying this out, but not sure if I have the time to do some of the more intricate styles during the work week...

Actually I had a similar idea some times ago, a challenge with myself of trying to to 365 different hairstyles, with this criteria:

- Different hairtoys does not make different hairstyles
- Variation (or combination of different elements) on a hairstyle makes different hairstyle (eg. Braided Cinnabun different from plain Cinnabun, or other variations)

I have a blog of this personal challenge, unfortunately is in italian, but post titles/hairstyles name are in english and there are pictures for everyone.

I think, for me ...

Fishbone Braid(s)
Rope Braid(s)
Butterfly Braid(s)
Five Strang Braid
Hypno Bun

Hehe. Good luck w/ your growth! I actually tried for half an hour last night practicing figure 8's and infinities, 'cause I wanted to do that today, and my hair just wouldn't cooperate. :(

On a happier note, I can now do the 4-strand box braid w/out a starting hairtie, since my first attempt this morning fell out around lunch time and I got some additional practice trying to put it back in. :p

Oh, oh, oh! You mean, if I wore a different hair item every day it would create a "different hairdo?"

I can easily do a sixty-day different hairtoy, but no way can do a sixty-day different up-do....

kittensoupnrice
August 26th, 2010, 10:29 AM
The OP can clarify, but I'm personally taking it to mean that a cinnabun created with any hairstick counts as one style, but if done with a flexi-8, fork, hair pins, or ficcare, etc, that are not "hairsticks" counts as a new style.

Likewise, doing a french twist with a maximus or a ficcarissimo is the same style, since they are both ficcares, but doing it with pins or a fork would make it a new style. :)

I'm still going to try to be brave and do 60 different updo styles w/out taking sticks/etc into consideration. :hmm: :crazyq: :bounce:

I tried to figure out the description of the Italian braid (I speak Spanish and some of the vocabulary is similar), but couldn't quite do it. It looks like a simple crochet or sewing technique. could you explain it in English?

kittensoupnrice

The Italian braid looks to me like what us girls always called the "cobra belly" when we were doing lanyards back in summer camp. With string, you use 4 strings. Two go inside for stability, and generally aren't seen. The other two strands: The left most strand gets looped loosely behind the two structural strands, the right most gets looped loosely in front of the two structural bands. The two strands are inserted through the looped part of the opposite strands, and both are drawn tight. Repeat. Alternate to keep it from spiraling, which is what it appears she's done.

I think with hair you could probably do it with just 3 strands, two for the design and one for the core, but it boggles my mind how it can be done neatly by yourself. I believe she said she had another girl do it for her? Once the braiding was done, and tied off, it appears she pinned it up for a folded braid look.

I might have to try it out for giggles tomorrow.

The "Italian" Braid was born because I spent all the Art Summer Camp (where I am a teacher) making english/french/dutch braids on little girls, and one of them decided that there must be an Italian braid too! So we tried together (so, it's a four hands work, one taking the central pulled and the other doing the pattern) to do the pattern of scoobiedoo bracelets (as we call it in italy, I think is the same thing you're talking about) with hair.

Your description seems right, I folded it and did a mini bun with the remaining central strand (which ends up really longer) to cover the elastic.

I'm happy you liked it!

It's a lovely looking braid! I just tried it out, and I believe the four hands part. I could get the pattern down but it was a right mess. The zig-zagging of the pattern ATE my length, too! I only managed to do 3 or 4 lines of the pattern before my taper got in the way. :o

Right, here it is. I tried to make this list as non-repetitive as possible, but a lot of these styles will only work for very long hair. Despite my best efforts, more than a third of these styles are buns.

Also, I'm going to modify the challenge a bit; I'm not going to do this in 60 continuous days, because I know that my schedule won't allow for it. My goal is to finish the list by the end of the semester (mid-December). I won't be doing them in order; they'll happen depending on how much time I have in the morning.

ETA: If you see any styles on here that you don't know and I haven't provided links to, ask me and I'll do my best to find the instructions.

I did mini version of this challange:
While at the first fair of the season, I did a different up-do for every day of the fair: 10 days.
Day 1:Nautilus Bun
Day 2:Hawser Braid Bun (which fell down into a hawser braid after the first 8 hours)
Day 3:Rose Bun
Day 4:Sailor Moon Buns (Twin Cinnamon Buns with Tails secured by metal-free fat elastics)
Day 5:Pencil Bun
Day 6:Sock Bun
Day 7:Cinnamon Bun
Day 8:Rope Braid
Day 9:Chinese Bun
Day 10:Figure 8 (more of an Infinity, really) Bun (which I loved, got complimented on and haven't been able to reproduce since :o).

It was fun, and made me get up early to check on tutorials before heading off to work, but it felt great to do something new. The second fair was really stressful, because among other things, I had no LHC access. So, since I just acquired a bunch of Spin Pins, I pretty much did Cinnamon Buns, though I did one day try Sailor Moon Buns, using only Spin Pins to anchor. The result was a softer, rounder-looking bun than I had achieved ever before in that style.

Day 1: Nautilus bun, which I've actually never tried before. It's quite comfy!

No problem, dancedancedance. It was fun finding all of these styles that I've never even thought of doing before.

Day 2: Knotted Braid for Long Hair http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/lhknot.htm

Pretty comfy, but my ends looked a bit thin and straggly for some reason. Also, make sure you pin the knot really tightly or it will slip down the back of your head. I used Spin Pins and they didn't have quite enough hold, so I think I'll do Amish pins next time.

Fantastic lists-with-links, eternallyverdan and Quahatundightu! Thank you for posting them! :)

Some neat pin-curl updos were linked by MissManda on another thread. They're beautiful on their own and seem like a great starting-off point for combo updos as well.

Pin roll half-up (http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2010/01/14/pin-roll-half-up/)

Pin curl flower bun (http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2009/11/04/pin-curl-bun-the-flower-bun/)

Pin roll bun 3 (http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/pin-roll-bun-3/)

Now that I think about it, a lot of fancy wedding-party updos feature pin curls, too.

Ok after posting my list of links I thought... why not give it a try? I am quite boring with styles really.... I need more inspiration in my life :D Usually I fall off the wagon quite easily with things like this, but en if I don't manage to do 60 consecutive days, I wanna wear 60 different hairstyles out and take photos of them :)

Day 3: Inspired by yesterday's updo (see post 60 in the thread, #54 in my updo list), I made a sockbun using my own hair in place of an actual sock. It's kind of lumpy, but it actually worked out pretty well. I just tied my hair into a flat knot with the ends coming from the middle, pinned it into place, and then followed normal sock bun procedure, twisting the rest of my ends around the sock bun a la cinnabun.

After a lot of thinking about, (after all I already have the blog to look after!), I decided to do the challenge too!

I find the idea of the self send email pretty smart, and the foresight of having a prepared list of 60 styles will help me in these days of crazyness (I'm totally into my work, no time to think about creative hairstyles for a while!).

So ladies, I'm in.

And I just have to say, that updo is ADORABLE! If only I had a flexi-8.. maybe I can try without it and just make it a hairbow, hmm. At least this challenge really makes us use some new styles :D

I've taken to scouring the internet for styles the night before, to refresh my memory on what I haven't done yet!

I really like it too! In my version, I wrapped the ponytail around the base of the elastic as well, to eat up some length. I don't have a flexi-8 either, I just used a hairstick and some pins :)

As for pictures ... I should start! Some of these styles *should* be in my albums (I think?), but many of them aren't!

Question: Would it be okay to have (for example) a sock bun one day (extra hair braided), then a sock bun (extra hair wrapped), then a rolled sock bun, then a sock bun with the extra hair left loose? It'd be different than adding an accent braid to a style to change it up. I'm coming close to the end of my 20 day challenge, but ... am tempted to go for longer! :)

Day 14: Wrapped Bun
Day 15: Triple-Coil Bun
Day 16: Sock bun half-up
(which means do a sock bun with all your hair and leave the ends down, in my case :D looks nice and shortens my hair length quite a bit; not really a half-up putting only half of your hair up)

I think basically you make your own rules - this sounds fine to me! Especially if it will help you go for 60 days :D :D You should!!!!!!!! :cheese:

Hehe. I ended up sending myself my list of hairstyles in an email. Every day, I bold-face the style that I've just done in the list, and hit reply!

It may be silly, but hey, it works. :p
good strategy!!

Hi again!
It's not easy to find 60 new styles (that I don't have already did in my blog), but I'm giving a try! I love the idea of doing this challenging thing in company! (I was starting to feel a little lame about it :P)

I've come up with 43 for now... I'll look for something more in the next days, to reach 60.

I still don't know how albums works here (and if I can have one) so I'm giving you the link!

Day 1: fancy regency pony
Day2: dutch braid
Day 3: rope braided bun with rope lace braid accents
Day 4: Half up with a hair thingy: stretchy beads with hair combs on either end...sells on tv
Day 5: Torrin's braided regency
Day 6: half through scrunchie pony bun
Day 7: down with lace braid accents holding the front back.
Day 8: Celtic knot held with hairsticks, with combos holding back hair on either side for volume around face. This is the first time I've ever had hair long enough to get this bun to work!! Yay!!

Day 9: Hmmm...how to explain....it's a tiny English braid from the front to the middle of my head, then into a big french braid...I'm trying to save the traditional French and English braids for days when I have no time.

Day 10: caterpillar frence pony
Day 11: faux Gibson tuck with curly ends piled on top of my head.
Day 12: Twin rope lace braids into a bee butt bun off to the side. With a flower in my hair. cute!
Day 13: oiling day...english braided chinese bun
ETA: Day 14: retro rag curls with front in faux reverse victory rolls

Day 15: infinity bun held with 2 hairsticks; hair not QUITE long enough yet
Day16: down with a headband
Day17: double twistback LOTR look. EASY! not much time to mess with hair today

Day 18: Tried to do twin fishtail braids sort of like Legolas from LOTR. FAIL! TOO MUCH FRIZZ! Resorted to twin French lace braids pulled back into crown like thing...sort of a repeat from day 17 only braided...bit of a cheat.

Day 19: Success!! Rosette bun (cutegirlshairstyles.com also on YouTube). Very Cute. Tied scarf around bun and let it hang down in back. I felt very Audrey Hepburn :-)

Day 20: Peacock twist

Day 21: lazy wrap bun held with little jaw clips

Day 22: rope braided Chinese bun...but one half keeps slipping out of its bobby pin and flopping against my neck...off to find a good hair days pin to really keep that sucker in...this is not my favorite bun.

Day 23: Elling woman bun--just learned how to do this one. sort of interesting looking, but not sure it'll be a regular in the rotation. My texture is a little rough to show off all the different rope braids. They sort of get lost.

And now on to today's style...

I thought about doing the lazy wrap w/ the d20 hairstick, since it seems it would be more fitting... but decided I still wanted to save that style for a hectic day. :o

Day 27: Loepsie’s Ribbon Braid

Day 28: oiling day (missed my last one due to timing issues argh!) Heidi braids clipped up with jaw clips instead of bobby pins. I’m quite fond of this style for hanging out at home and for sleeping with an oily head. It’s very comfy.

Day 29: Plain front (no hair toys) rose bun for setting braid waves

Day 30: Half up rosette bun with pretty braid waves (see www.cutegirlshairstyles.com)

Day 31: Yay! :magic: I’m past the halfway mark!! Halfway french braid with the back left down. Taking advantage of cooler temps and low humidity. Finally!

I need help renaming the "inverted" French braid. Please note that it is not the same as the dutch braid (http://www.flickr.com/photos/7744906@N05/4956773581/in/set-72157624844241187/)!
Any ideas?

Can you describe the difference between the two braids or post a tutorial? Maybe we can help you with it.

Can you describe the difference between the two braids or post a tutorial? Maybe we can help you with it.

Well, in a french braid the strands go "over over over".
A dutch braid goes "under under under".

The "inverted" french braid still goes over over, but instead of gathering hair from the same side as the strand, you reach around and grab it from the other side. So if my strand is on the right, instead of adding gathered hair from the right, you gather it from the left, bringing it under the working area of the braid to the other side, and then add it to the strand.

It makes the braid sit on top of your head like a dutch, but if you'll notice, the chevron pattern of the braid goes in the opposite direction as the dutch. The french/english chevrons point down, and the dutch chevrons point up.

I was thinking of calling it the "Belgian" braid, since Belgium is the tiny country right by the Nederlands, England, and France. But then I was thinking, since it's the English braid "from the other side of the hemisphere and down under", that the Australian braid might be a cute name. :p

Why not name it after you or where you're from? I've never seen directions for this anywhere, maybe you should do a tutorial? I like Belgian and Australian, too, though. Either one would be cute. You're right about the chevron pattern; it is what distinguishes it from a Dutch. Cool! New braid to try! :)

Day 35: front pulled into barrette, then the whole thing ponytailed

Day 36: twin french braids (also called classic french braids, I think)

Day 37: The Maria: named after a college friend who always wore her hair like this for special occasions—a quirky take on the french twist, you twist the hair like you are starting a peacock twist (you’ll need curls for this), but only do enough of a twist so that you can secure the bun. Then you artfully arrange a mass of curls on top of your head and over the twist so all you see are all the ringlets. It’s really cool and pretty and very wearable for everyday.

Day 38: mini clip topknot: this is a front poof with a bee butt bun done right on the top of the head (you could do a cinnabun for a flatter effect). I hold it with mini jaw clips. I like this one because it disperses the weight evenly and doesn’t give me a headace.

Day 39: The Horses’ Mane: I still had pretty curls left over from day 37 so I put half of my hair in a banana clip and left the bottom half down, creating a pretty cascading, mane effect that makes my hair seem really long. Cool!

Day 40: The Triangle Bun: Just a fun style I came up with at about 1 in the morning; You start twisting your hair into a rope off center, bring it straight up into a point just above the center of the back of your head, clip it; then bring it straight down to the second point in the triangle and clip it. Bring it straight over to the third point in the triangle and clip it. You should end up with a triangle shaped bun with a clip at each point. Fun! Boy, it’s getting hard to come up with stuff! 20 more days!!??

Make a ponytail, separate it into 4 sections, and start wrapping all 4 around your head. Uses a LOT of pins! You can search for how to do it on youtube. I really want to try this out braided, at some point, because I saw a pic of the braided vortex bun, and it was stunning!

I want to join this challenge and I want it to be a picture-heavy event, so I've been waiting to get some AAA-batteries for my camera. I've even managed to compile a big list of hairstyles that I probably can do.

I have a tiny bit of extra money left in my bank account so maybe...

56: Braided beehive (didn't particularly like this one)
57: cowrie shell bun (my hair really needed a break from all the braids!
58: Braided vortex bun (similar to the braided beehive but looks neater)
59: 4 strand woven bun (a really nice bun. Easier than I expected! I actually think I like this bun better than the Chinese bun)

Sorry about the lack of pictures. I've been super busy lately. :(
ONE MORE DAY LEFT! :cheese:

Day 60: Arwen's braid
I must say, I will NOT be attempting this braid again any time soon. It took well over an hour, and I finally had to get hubby to help me. >.<

I think I'm bowing out....^graceful curtsy^...just because it feels like work now, instead of fun...MAJOR congrats to those who have made it...I made it about 50 days, and that's long enough for me.

My favorite updos from the challenge:

rose bun, Loepsie's ribbon briad, regency updo, victorian updo, dutch braid, retro styles

I learned a lot of creative ways to add interest to the front of my updos and braids and how to get out of a hair style rut.

Thanks for the experience!!

Oh! Thanks for the idea, eezepeeze. I think as people end the challenge, it would be fun to list which of the new styles they learned they liked best.

I learned *quite* a few new styles, but I must admit that I was surprised at how much I liked the log roll, the 4 strand box-braid, the pencil bun, and Neoma's knot.

I love the texture of the box-braid, and the log roll is great for when my hair is wet.
The pencil bun is almost exactly like the Nautilus bun and the Neoma knot is almost exactly a celtic knot, yet somehow both of them are easier for me to put up in my hair.

Is it too late to join this challenge? I work at a restaurant and have to have my hair up most of the time anyway...I get so bored with just repeating the same styles day in and day out. One of the reasons I joined this community was because there are so many more options I have discovered and tis challenge is the perfect opportunity to try them out! If I can join, I would like to start out today with Isilya's Woven Bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=5502)
so,
