That hair should be moisturized before dyeing in order to absorb as much dye as possible? According to my hairstylist this is true.

But.. I've also heard that dry areas absorb the most dye. My ends usually end up lighter than the rest of my hair.

Hmm...

I've never heard anything like that before. I don't see why moisture would make your hair absorb more dye...I doubt it'd affect its porosity. I have heard that clarifying before dyeing increases dye uptake, though.

If the hair is porous, it's good to do a protein treatment before, else the porous parts will absorb more dye. Has happened to me.

I believe it's true.

My hairdresser prefers to color unwashed hair (if it's not REALLY REALLY 'dirty').

Yes, I've heard it too. I've heard that is more likely to hold color.

Porous hair will absorb and release moisture quickly. Here's a link I found: http://keepitsimplesista.blogspot.com/2009/09/porous-hair.html

This article helps find out what's going on with our hair: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=44

The overly simplified way of describing it would be... Pores = holes. The more porous, the more open spaces it has, thus soaking up and losing moisture quicker.
Overly simple and without taking into account other nuances, but you get the picture!
And those are great links, Lianna!

I have heard that too. Moisturizing is adviced before dying not only to protect your hair but also to achieve better colour... It's also true that dry hair (ends...) "catch" the colour better but it also tends to fade really fast there. At least in my mum's case it works this way.
