What do you call those sections or “layers” where you take more hair into a French brad?
As in for example, this braid where I took more hair in in 3 “layers”

What do you call that? Sections? Layers?

I can't be of much help as far as hair terminology, but wow, that's a beautiful, thick braid!

Sections is what I'd say.

Now, what do I need to do to get my braid to look like yours?!?! It must be as thick as your wrist!

May 19th, 2008, 05:41 AM
I'd say sections, too.

I call the three existing ones "sections" and the ones I add I call "new strands" and then they are part of the section.

Your braid is incredibly beautiful. Your lack of taper astounds me. :)

I'm just awestruck by your braid. Not only is it one of the thickest I've ever seen but its complete lack of taper is amazing to behold!

There isn't one accepted way to describe this, let alone a single word. You just have to describe it carefully in a sentance.

For what you'd did, I'd probably describe it as "a french braid with a short 'frenched' section, adding hair to the braid six times, three times on each side."

ETA: One of the bigger points of confusion, in describing a french braid, is whether you're counting the number of sections added down one side, or total for both sides. The best you can do is to specify which type of counting you are doing, as there is no standard.

It is also worth noting that one might add hair an odd number of times, total, adding, say, 3 sections on the left and 4 sections on the right.

I find it amusing that you said this, seeing as you're from Canada. My friend insists that I club baby seals, as I'm Canadian, and that's the real reason I've got so much stuff on my keychain, not, as I say, so that I can find it

Igor, your braid is stunning!

I think I'd call them "sections" or maybe "gathers," but I would also say that you gathered hair 3 times on each side.

Oh, and though you've heard it countless times, I've always been in awe at your gloriously thick hair.

I agree with franny on the names. I start with strands and sections are added as the braid progresses. That really is an outstanding braid, Igor. :) Really though if you explain it right to anybody you can give it any name you really feel like. "I started with three strands and added "a thing"/"stuff" to each of them 3 times before I braided the length."

You have got to be kidding me with this braid. I have never seen one that thick all the way down. Uh, what was the question, I dunno. Stunned by braid.

Aw, thank you for all the compliments everyone :flowers: I really didn’t add it for the compliments but only because I didn’t want to use someone else’s picture

But with 10 votes for “sections” that will be the word I’ll use from now on

Thanks again though, you all made my day :crush:
