View Full Version : being completely productless made my hair straight :)

... and I mean stick straight, except the very ends where it starts to try to curl. I didn't take a picture, because the webcam wouldn't be able to get much of it, and the pictures it takes are so ridiculously dark that it'd be useless anyways.

But yeah, that's nifty to know for future reference!

I washed it earlier today and did my regular conditioner and leave in and it's back to it's regular waves. I'm sort of sad, I kind of liked it straight, but it was hell to brush without some kind of conditioner.

My hair goes through straight patches. I've noticed it more since I've paid more attention to what my hair is doing.

I'm normally 2b but at the moment it's more like 2a and if I put it in an updo when it's still damp, it pretty much dries straight so that I can actually brush through it.

I was using silicones again (Kerastase mask as a conditioner) and all those silicones made it pretty much straight so that I thought I'd lost my wave altogether. A quick clarify did the job though.

I kind of like having the ability to go curly or straight - if only I could work out exactly how to completely control this it would make things much easier.

Lucky you :) I've never had particularly straight hair. I'll have to test this out further.

I used to have ringlet type waves as a kid - I'll have to post a picture so I can show what I'm terming 'ringlets' - and if I could reattain that I'd be ecstatic. Or even hair that dark, now it's just blah. lol.

I'm the same way in the sense that no matter what styles I do, the waves (if they show at all) won't be there for long, so typically it ends up drying pretty normal. This is the first time it's ever been straight though - you couldn't see any waves at all, it was cool.

I don't think any of the stuff I used help to really enhance anything - it was the coconut and the almond & shea butter Suave conditioners and the sleek & smooth Garnier leave in (which I rarely use, but I couldn't find my other two leave ins) - but now I'm going to have to experiment and find out.

And yes, I think this could be fun. Although I wish I could get it straight without having to not have any conditioners in it... it really was hell to brush.

eta - you don't have curly hair? it looks pretty curly in your signature.

My siggy is basically about the curliest I can get it with scrunching and product. Mostly it's half as curly the first day and then almost straight the second.

Here is my hairtyping pic (airdried no manipulation or leave in)

Here is when my hair went straight (after using heavy slilcone products)

I have to do a bit of scrunching to get it curly like in my siggy. I display it because it's was such a cool pic when everything was working and as a total plus it was Christmas Eve

Ah, good reasoning. And yes, my hair with zilch looked like yours does with silicones. Interesting...

Now if only I could figure out how to stop half of my ends from curling a completely opposite direction from the rest, I'd be thrilled, lol.

Mine goes mostly straight with no product as well.

It was almost straight when I washed with shikakai and oiled with coconut oil.
But after a while it got kind of brittle(maybe from the henna + no conditioner?)
I loved it cuz it was so much easier to deal with - no tangles, easy to put up or wear down, hardly any hair shed. :cloud9: If I didn't worry about my hair breaking from being dry I'd like to do use those all the time. Well, that and I don't want to order it online. (and sometimes I would miss the shampoo/conditioner smell.....)

The only other time it looses a lot of curl is when I co wash which is completely opposite of everyone else who seems to get curlier with it? My hair curls the most when I use cones. :crazyq:

My hair goes curlier with cones initially, but once the build up occurs, it pretty much goes straight. I'm interested to find out what happens when I use shampoo alone although I don't think it's something I could do longterm as moisture is key for my hair to look and feel ok.

OP do you mean you washed your hair with shampoo and didn't use any kind of conditioner, oil, or leave in? I'd love to get my hair straighter. I'm a 1C. But I can't imagine being able to deal with it with no conditioner. I'm fine with no oils or leave ins. If so what kind of product did you use to wash?

I shampoo'd, conditioned and then did the vinegar rinse, but I left the rinse on while I washed my face - and since I'm a little obsessive about my face when I've been outside all day, the rinse was on for a bit. I'm not good with timing, but it was on apparently long enough to eat any conditioner that was left on, because when I got out and tried to brush it, it immediately turned into a rats nest. I had to section it off to try to work through it.

It was regular Suave daily clarifying shampoo (my boyfriend's, but his hair is so short I usually end up using most of the bottle), and a combination of Suave coconut and almond & shea butter. Then just a white vinegar rinse. I've gathered I probably made the vinegar rinse a little stronger than normal, so that might be part of the rats nest issue.

I'm actually thinking it may be the no-product part, as well - once it gets about BSL, I automatically start using leave in conditioners and such, so maybe it's just that it's been so long since I've been product free that it was a surprise. I dunno. But it was cool! (lots of frizz down the entire length of my hair though - much more than normal, lol.)

My hair does straight days too...

Sometimes it'll be so curly I can't do anything, sometimes it'll be straight and beautiful....

I'm pretty sure it does it to annoy me!

Well cool for you! My hair never really changes that much. It's either wavy, or slightly curly. Or straight with enough oils/product.
Cones don't really straighten it, but make the waves less "pretty" and full. I didn't notice too much change in the visible texture when going cone-free, just the fact that the waves were nicer to look at, and softer feeling.
