I am continuing my quest to find a cheap conditioner for CO that does not give DBF or me a headache. I was looking in my local Dollar Tree, but after going through all of the products, I can't stop sneezing, so no luck yet.

What I did find were two kinds of hair cutting scissors. One was labeled as "Hair Trimming," while the other was labeled as "Hair Styling." The trimming scissors were about 7" long, while the styling scissors are about 5" long.

Since my hair is in great need of a trim, I've been wanting to get a reasonably-priced pair of hair-cutting scissors. I can't even afford $10 scissors at the moment. Does anyone know if these scissors from Dollar Tree are safe to cut hair with? If they are, which pair should I get?

Should I wait until I have more money so I can get a pair of nicer scissors? I am very concerned about the condition of my ends as they are quite dry and Velcro-like. My last trim was close to a year-and-a-half ago and I feel uncomfortable with going for so long without a trim.

What do you all think? I'd really appreciate your input! :) Thanks!

I think they'd be safe to use if you only use them for hair and they seem sharp when you use them.

I certainly hope so. I can't tell how sharp they are because of the packaging they're in. I am going to guess they're going to be sharp enough seeing as they're labeled for use on hair. If I decide to get them, I'll just make sure to hide them away so none of my roommates use them. :p

How about Whole Foods unscented conditioner? I don't know if you have a WF near you or not. It's really inexpensive. As for the scissors, I don't know about the Dollar Tree scissors but at one time I had a pair of WM cheapies. They worked OK for S & D for a little while. Mine dulled up pretty fast. I replaced them with a pair of Tweezerman scissors which are still good. I think I paid maybe $18 for them at a Trade Secrets salon. Maybe you could find them on sale or at a place like ULTA when they have a coupon.

Unfortunately, there isn't a Whole Foods in my area. :( It would be so lovely to have a WF or a Trader Joe's around here, but alas, it isn't so. I wish one of them would replace Market of Choice. lol

Hmm. Now I'm thinking that since the scissors are only worth $1, they'll dull pretty fast. But I really think my hair needs a trim very soon so I could get the Dollar Tree ones for now and replace them with a nicer pair when I get more money. I think that sounds like a good idea to me.

Now I need to figure out which ones to get...

I'd get the smaller ones if you are mainly going to do S & D. I find I have better control with a smaller pair of scissors.

Yeah, I have very tiny hands, so I think the smaller pair would work best. Longer scissors put me at risk for poking my eyes out. :o

DBF just offered to sharpen any scissors I need because he has a whetstone. I'm still getting the cheap-o scissors first and use them only for S&D/small trims rather than have him sharpen the general use scissors.

You get what you pay for with hair scissors. There is a reason professional hair scissors cost upwards of $500, they're razor sharp and cut the hair cleanly. Cheap scissors aren't going to be nearly as sharp or do as good of a job but in a pinch they'll work for some S&D.

I've had zero luck with that. It wasn't me doing the sharpening. It was done by someone who knew what they were doing. If they get dull and don't seem like they are making nice clean snips on your ends, throw them away and get some new ones. A $1 pair of scissors is not worth trying to save. Save up and get some good ones at Sallys.

Yes, I am quite aware of this, which is why I have been putting off trimming my hair for so long. The scissors I am eying over at Sally's are $45. Someday, someday...

i got them a while back.. looked at the cut hair under a microscope.. totally shredded like when i did the slides that i cut with paper scissors..

they would only hurt your hair.. also they are made of inferior metal so they wont hold an edge.. even after sharpening they would still cause damage

i use 10$ ones from walmart.. under a microscope they leave the hair nice and blunt.. (even after many many trims)

my dad got me the microscope when i was little and i didnt even use it until i joined LHC.. go figure

try cleaning your whole place top to bottom.. ill bet that you will find quite a lot of coins.. thats how i bought my scissors.. 10$ may seem expensive (it does to me at least) but its worth it.. if you trim your hair with the dollar scissors you will have 90% splits a week later.. so check your house and your car and even the bottom of your purse for loose change.. its worth the 10$

eta (mine are the short titanium ones in the beauty aisle at walmart..they come with a little protective holder)

Thanks, everyone. I'll pass on the Dollar Tree scissors, then. I am very glad I asked. I am so used to being frugal with things that sometimes it's hard for me to get over the concept of having to get the more expensive item. But I understand that quality is very important.

I'll see what I can scrounge up. ^^ I think I'd rather wait and baby my ends some more than cut them to find they're in even worse condition.
