Could someone help me with my hair type?

This is plopped with gel, just to give you an idea of what my hair can do when styled:

This is with day one hair with no product at all (sorry the pic isn't the best):

This is a series of day two hair with no product:

Left-

Right-

As you can see, the right side of my head has significantly more wave than the left. Even when I scrunch/plop, the canopy on the left side will be just kind of limp gelled strings of hair. When I used to curl with heat, it would do the same thing. :(

Can you help me decide on a hair type? I have one selected in my profile, but I was just guessing really. And does anyone else have this weird straight spot in their hair? How do you deal with it?

Thanks!
Vanessa

To determine your hair type exactly, wasn't it key to wash, air dry without product in it? Oh, right... sorry...

:hmm: Looks like 2a, possibly 2b to me.

I'd say about a 2a.

My hair's generally wavier on the right than the left, too

I would say 2a as well.

My hair has similar texture to yours and also I find that one side is curlier than the other. All the hair at the nape of my neck is almost bone straight so that means I don't get any shrinkage which is brilliant. There is also a bit at the back on my head under the canopy that is completely smooth and straight - it feels so nice and it's probably what straight haired people's hair feels like. The rest of my hair is a mix of wirey, straight, wavy and curly hairs. I just let my hair do it's thing and I don't worry about the straight spots.

You will likely find that your hair will respond differently almost every time you wash it and how you treat it after the wash makes a big difference as you can see. Many people would be envious of hair that can be straight one day, wavy the next and curly when you want it to be. 2a/2b hair can be very handy that way.

2a and I have the same type of straighter or curlier areas. It's not easy having multiple textures because what works great for one part won't for another. How frustrating. lol If I'm straightening my hair it's not a problem I just concentrate more on certain areas and if I'm wearing it curly I might have to go over a few pieces with the curling iron. I've been doing it all my life so I don't really notice or care or find it extra work. My crown is the curliest and underneath and in front are more straight. Weiiiird.

2a it is then! Thanks everyone! This whole half straight half wurly thing is frustrating, but what can you do.

For those who have 2a hair - obviously CO washing and plopping can encourage the curl, but what if you want to do straight hair one day? Is there a way to make it straight(er) without using heat and without damaging it and making it frizzy? Will doing something like that *discourage* the curl the next time I plop?

Bump ^ because of a new question in the post above. :)

Actually you have lovely volume, and from my read approximately the same degree of body on both sides of the head. The thing with any furl whatsoever is that the pattern of the furl isn't the same on both sides -- ever. It isn't perfectly symmetrical. When you get to the bottom of both sides it's clear to me that the same degree of body is at the bottom. I see what you describe as the 'straight spot', but it's still curved a bit.

By the way, it's not uncommon for people to have a spot that's less furl, more curl in one selected zonage of hair. Just as it's not uncommon to have a spot that's darker or lighter.....

It's just genetics. ETA: It just means a few hair follicles are different shaped than the majority of hair follicles, for example, when we have a spot that's (hypothetically) stick straight and the rest say, wavy, as yours is. Hair curl factor is determined mostly by shape of hair follicle, which is inherited genetically.

Frankly, you have the hair that everyone wants. Your hair type, possessing all that body, can be worn straight (if you want to do the heat thing to get it there); you can use large rollers for more controlled wave and just get a certain kind of curl in a particular direction (depending on size of roller and rolling under/over, and what angle, position on the head....; you can have a lot more curl if you were to use smaller rollers; you can put back in some kind of pretty updo with a furl fiesta topping the whole thing....all kinds of stuff).

I cannot offer you a number based on Feia's Hair Typing system. I never really looked at it much. I do recommend you find a hair twin or two on this or any other hair site, and learn what those folks do for their hair.

You could consider a side part, even with bangs. It can look pretty cool.

Mine's a 1c/2a, much wavier in the front (right on the bangs especially, darnit!) and a couple of spots on one side and one spot at the back, so yeah, I think some of us have these weird combo types. I would also say 2a/2b for yours, 'cause it is combo, so ya know, we need those extra categories! *when just one won't do* :)
