View Full Version : Has It Really Been A Year?! (PIC HEAVY)

Hello To Everyone,

It's amazing how time flies these days. . . or am I just getting older? Today marks 1 whole year that I have been involved with LHC. I've had to take emotional therapy, sleeping pills, and psychological counseling just to be able to post here. LOL Just Kidding!

On this day, 1 year ago, I came in from mowing my Grandma's yard in Bristol, TN. My hair had grass, thorns, leaves, poison ivy, and bugs in it. I had lurked for about 2 or 3 months before joining LHC. So I decided to go ahead and register, in order to be able to ask questions and receive advice on my hair. I really wanted ideas on pulling my hair back to keep is super secure and safe from the lawn equipment and general outdoor styles to keep my hair out of my face.

Fast forward 1 year later, I never expected my hair to be as long as it is now. Nor, did I expect to learn as much as I have about caring for it. I'm also glad that I could share tips and trick with all of the members here, and help them out on style they are learning as well!

I want to thank You All for responding to my questions, giving me advice, and I really appreciate the compliments you all have given me over the past year!

Here is a pic of my hair in February of 2009, I had layers put in:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/user24018_pic48152_1250561790.jpg?t=1281034342

After just 1 month, I no longer liked the layers. They started to become unmanageable.

I needed a way to keep my hair out of my face and keep it secure, for the outdoors and trail blazing. After all, a heard like this, will keep you busy:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/user24018_pic47253_1249785527.jpg?t=1281034737

^ Yup those are the mastermind escapee's caught on the trail-cam! They put Harry Houdini to shame!

I also needed a way to keep my hair out of my eyes, so I could see the fretboard of the guitar! (Which is another reason why I'm not very good at playing! hehe)

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/user24018_pic48280_1250658657.jpg?t=1281034873

I was stuck with the usually ponytail for my everyday style, but the layers were still cumbersome to deal with:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/user24018_pic48546_1250914904.jpg?t=1281035061

So a friend of mine offered to put a braid in my hair that looked very much like a Mohawk. The Dutch Braid:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/user24018_pic47069_1249668835.jpg?t=1281035168

This was the most secure way I found to wear my hair! It held through everything! The only problem was. . . I did not know how to make one! lol

I tried out the new 'do while mowing, hedging, and weed-eating the yard! I was invisible. . . weeds feared me. . . the grass ran from me. . . The Greek Gods of Old feared me. . . I was the modern day Perseus. Thus, I decided on the username "yellowchariot":

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/CaesarHair.jpg?t=1281036560

One day I shall have a statue, built of Gold, to immortalize my success haha!

*Note: man-boobs were edited out, to comply with rules and regulations, if moderation wants to remove this pic, please do so. I do not want to offend anyone*

After reading some of Your All's tutorials, and YouTube videos, I was able to make the French Braid, which held just as well as the Mohawk Braid:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/AfterMowing1.jpg?t=1281035333

^ That braid held through 3 hours of mowing and lawn work!

Then When I took the braid out, I was surprised to find out that I had waves, and looked like a surfer dude hehe:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/surfwaves.jpg?t=1281035968

*Note: man-boobs were edited out, to comply with rules and regulations, if moderation wants to remove this pic, please do so. I do not want to offend anyone*

Then after another a month of practicing I was able to finally do a Dutch (Mohawk) Braid on myself! It took me a while to get used to going Over the Middle, instead of Under!

I also saw a few pictures of the "French ponytail" aka "Caterpillar" style. This was very easy to do, when I didn't have time to braid:

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc166/pix50/user24018_pic47159_1249758397.jpg?t=1281037018

^ I found this method to hold almost as good as a braid, and it works very well with layered hair, if you use smaller sections.

I have learned to do many more styles. I've never thought how useful a simple basic bun is, now that my hair is much longer. You can even see in my albums and photobucket site the progression of my hair journey from beginning (late 2007-2009 layers), and to this day. I never imagined calling this a "journey" but it has been. When I look at my hair, each inch of length records a day and time in history that an event has happened. When I look at the very tips of my ends, I remember back when my hair was only 3 inches. As I make my way upward to the root of my scalp, I remember everything in-between that took place in my life. I am currently at 22.25 inches long. I have .5"-1" trims every 4-6 months. I plan to grow to at least 30" and then I'll see what that length has in store for me!

I would like to wish you all a blessed journey!

That’s awesome! I’m keen in styles that hold too... not that I physically work as hard as you. Phew, you seem like a busy person. But just so I don’t have to worry about my style falling out as I walk to work.

It’s grown quite a bit though! Congrats!!

Heres to many more styles and years to come :cheese:

For the record, you, my friend, are hilarious. My son (10) came by and says, "why is he on that mower and why does he have little white boxes on his chest?" Very good, yellowchariot. Your hair looks great, which is really the point of joining LHC to begin with. LHC is like a treatment program for fabulous hair. Common side effects are insight, friendship, tendency to put strange grocery products on hair, sudden urge to take pictures of the back of one's own head (which we all know is harder than it sounds), sense of community, and the list goes on...

I know, the list of side effects is always longer than the list of benefits. ...Wait, those are benefits! Score!

Anyway, you're a party, man. I get a kick out of your humor sometimes. Nice to have you around.

Wow! Has it been a year? It feels like it was just yesterday.

Happy Anniversary!

Looking good! I love your french and dutch braids. They always look perfect!

I know patience, I feel that it has only been a few months! I think this place is a portal to a time worm-hole expanse!

Hey YC! BIG, HUGE congrats on your anni!! Your hair is awesome and your talents are to be admired (and envied )!! Keep it up!

Thank you, whiteisle, I never thought my talents could be envied. I never knew I had any! haha

LOL at censoring the man boobs. Happy anniversary, your hair looks great!

Yes they are dangerous, sugarpixie, I had to get a permit to carry them around lol! Thank you very much!

Time really flies!!! I can't believe its already been a full year since you have joined!
I personally feel honored to have gotten to know you as a friend and I know many other people here feel the same way. Congrats on your first anniversary bro.

eric, I really appreciate that. Thank you for the advice over this past year! Watch out for that LHC time portal, tomorrow could be my 2nd anniversary hehe.

Yay!! Congrats on your anniversary and your great progress!

Thank you very much, TrudieCat!

Ummm......can we get a smilie of "edited man boobs" please!!!

I do have to agree with everyone. It is so nice to have you on here. Your hair looks great and you have a great sense of humor. It is hard to believe it's been a year.

CONGRATS!!!

^ Chrissy, I tried! Really I did! I could not get them to paste over to my pic! I was using MS Paint. However, the smiley wasn't recognized by the program as picture!

Any ideas?!

Nice hair. I covet your guitar!! Erm, I mean, nice hair...

Jenn of Pence, that particular guitar was not mine. I was trying it out at a guitar shop. I wanted it very badly!

Congratulations on one year!

I would never have guessed that yellowchariot referred to a lawn mower. That's totally cool!
Ed

^ EdG, me either! It wasn't until last year, when I began mowing my Granma's, that I find out that a mower was named "Yellow Chariot" by a company called Great Dane. Now if it were a John Deere, I would have gone by the username: "GreenDeere" lol

Great progress, YellowChariot!

Thanks, Kristin!

Your wonderful information and posts have helped my with my spouse's hair, and you always manages to post something that puts a smile on my face. Thnak you so much, we are in your debt.
I can't wait for my one-year anniversary. Congratulations, and keep it up Sir YellowChariot, Guardian of the Trail of the Lonesome Pine.

PrincessBob, I'm really grateful that I could help you out with your spouse's hair! More importantly, its good to know that I bring a smile to those, who read my posts. (Or at least most of the time)

I LOVE that caterpillar style! It looks great! Almost makes me wish I had straight hair so I could pull it off. And also, "now we know" why you're called yellowchariot. Very appropriate name.

Thanks for the compliment, Speedbump! I plan on doing an updated version of the french ponytail/caterpillar just to see how many hair ties I can fit in. haha
BTW: You should be able to do them even if your hair isn't straight!

Happy Anniversary!! Your hair looks awesome!
P.S. Your french/dutch braids look great

Aquamarine, I appreciate your compliment. I never thought that members here would actually think my braids were presentable, because I was (and still am) learning to do them!

Congrats! You pull off long hair as a man so well

LOL MAN BOOBS. Sadly those white "censor boxes" drew my attention more than if you just left it alone.

Happy anniversary!

Thanks Juneii, I believe that after a year of having long hair, the people in my locality realize that I am a guy! HAHA. Sorry about the censor boxes! I was actually trying to do what Chrissy suggested, use the yellow smileys!

A lovely and successful journey - I hope you will have much more of this in the future while you grow towards your goal! Happy Anniversary, yellowchariot

Oh, and I loved the part you wrote about Perseus

Thank you Phexlyn! Currently, my goal is to reach 30 inches. I expect that to be around April or May of 2011.

I had just rented Clash of the Titans on Blue Ray, so a lot of the inspiration came from that. haha

Happy anniversay! Way to g(r)o(w)! I can't believe it's been a whole year!

Gypsygirl, Thanks very much! I also want to wish you the best with the new addition to your family!

I can't believe it's been a year either! It's been a year and a month for me The name yellow chariot always made me think of the song swing low, sweet chariot. I could never guess it was a lawn mower, LOL

Laylah, I now have that song stuck in my head! Thank you for mentioning that, I haven't heard that song in a very long time!

Congratulations on your anniversary and great progress!

Congratulations on your 1st Anniversary Yellowchariot. You are such a funny guy!!! heh heh I really enjoyed reading your post and hair growing journey! Here's to the next year!

Charlotte, I'm glad that I could bring about laughter here on the forums. That is one of my goals in life. I've gone a very long time without laughing or smiling. I've learn in life, if you can spread cheer and laughter about, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones" - Proverbs 17:22

You are so good at braiding, I'm jealous!

anrems, thanks for the compliment. I never would have guessed, that I would be "known" for braiding haha! Who would have thunk it?! Though I try to give back what I learn from everyone by doing tutorials. I am proof that if I can do a braid, anyone can!

Great growing, Yellowchariot!!! Congrats on your anniversary! (The man-boob shot totally cracked me up!!!) Your french ponytail looks fantastic on you. Here's to the coming year and continued growing!!

Pixna, those man-bewb shots ruined my hair, and the soon to be golden statue I plan on having built!
Thanks for the ponytail compliment. I'll try another one soon, and posts pics.

Concratulations with your anniversary. Great post and great humor... it was really funny.

Congratualations! Your hair and your braiding skills are both looking fantastic! I can't believe it's been a year. I'm another one who may not comment much, but I always enjoy your posts! (still giggling over the man-boobs edit!)

Try not to let this horrible heat we're having fry you! Be careful out there on your chariot!

rags, I appreciate that. I should have named this thread the man-bewb anniversary thread. lol
BTW: I am no longer in TN, now. I'm in VA. I don't get out in the weather much, though I need to and I no longer mow due to my health issues.
The furious chariot lives in TN, lurking inside of my Grandma's garage. If you don't feed grass, thorns, leaves, bugs, snakes, spiders, beer cans, and left over fire-crackers from the 4th July. . . then It becomes very angry and difficult to control! It must be feed on a daily basis! I wasn't able to mow one week, due to the heavy rain in TN last year. Finally there was a break of weather, and the sun came out. As I entered into the garage, I found the chariot chewing on a chainsaw, and the pitchfork and rake had already been eaten! hehe

BTW: I have never got the error before: "The text that you have entered is too long (18234 characters). Please shorten it to 10000 characters long."

So I had to dived my post in 2 parts!

Wow - has it only been a year? You learned so much so fast and gained so much attention and respect from LHC by the time I met you I just assumed you were a seasoned veteran! Congrats!

pinkbunny, I honestly did not mean to draw so much attention, for real. I'm a shy person. Though, I'm very grateful that I got quick responses to some questions that I had.
I'm far from a veteran, lol, I haven't even tried any hair potions or treatments yet. After that, then maybe I may grow stronger in The Force! haha

LJ, I'm glad you reminded me! I didn't check for any crack or "pvbes" (<- whatever that is LOL!) I hope its not contagious!

Alright now, the man-pon was your invention, not mine! haha
hm. . . I wonder if they could be used for censoring photos?!

Looks great! Happy Anniversary

Thank you Ashley!

Wow, I love all the variations. I only know how to do 2 braids, its hard when you have layers I find.

Thank you, Hylia! Hang in there, those layers will get longer, I used very small sections to keep the secure.

Happy Anniversary! Your hair is growing really well! How do you braid so neatly...? Love the caterpillar

Aredhel, I'd like to know how to braid neatly! Really! There are members here such as Igor, hmmm, and a few others, whose braids put mine to shame. I always get those bumps sticking up!

Happy anniversary, your hair looks great! Also, hur hur... boobs

Synthemesc, thanks! There have been innocent people, go blind, after seeing my bewbs. Its like staring into Medusa's eyes. Except you don't turn into a statue, you just go blind and run away!

Congrats on the anniversary!

Even though I've been braiding hair most of my life (on others, then on myself) it wasn't until recently that I've really gotten the dutch braid. I could do it on somebody else, but I couldn't do it on myself for some reason.

I really like the french caterpillar thing. I've seen the caterpillar look on a ponytail, but never french. I might have to try that!

NorthernDancer, I could french braid on my ex g/f's hair at the time. However I had to re-learn the process on my own head! The dutch braid, for me, was the most difficult! I was so used to doing the french method. It took a month of practice to really get it in my brain. Now I can alternate whenever I want to.

Happy Anniversary, yellowchariot!

Your hair looks wonderful - you've achieved fantastic growth, and it's been a pleasure getting to know you.

Thanks Indigo Girl, I appreciate that! Also the same to you!

Jessikinz, I agree, time has gone by too quick! yes every time I look at my hair, there is a moment in time, that I recall. Some said, some happy. Nevertheless, it keeps a regard of progression, of moving forward no matter where you are.

Congrats YC! You, your humor, and your hair have a great presence on LHC!

Great post. Entertaining and informative! I like the french ponytail - have never seen it before, obviously I still have lots to learn about styles!

Top_Cat, I've seen a lot of french ponytails out and about in town. I guess it's an easy way to mimic the braid. However I still had to find instructions on how to do one haha.

Thank you, lilravendark! I appreciate that hair compliment very much! My "Ultimate" goal isn't necessarily growing length, but obtaining thicker texture!
However, I have noticed that my hair is starting to cover more of my scalp, on top, with my texture progression :cheese:

Tangerine, I hope you had a wonderful holiday! I really appreciate those kind words. When I first joined, I felt like a fish out of water. . . A tiger without camouflage. . . a knight without armor, A swordsman without his sword. . .
Now. . . I can swim, hunt, defend myself, and strike :cheese: lol :p Ok I know that was WAY OVER THE TOP!

Happy 1 year! And you look great with long hair and I like the braids too! Keep growing, it suits you well!

Thanks Gothic Lolita, I remember over a year and half ago, about half of the people I knew, told me to cut, and the other half told me not to. Though, it was never their decision. I also thanked those that told me to keep growing. Now everybody just "accepts" my long hair. Its not even an issue anymore. Almost as if, once they get past that "mental psyche" and the idea soaks in their brain, everything is fine!

Happy Anniversary, great progress

Thanks much, Liluri!

Yellowchariot, congratulations!! It looks as though you have had fantastic growth over the past year, and sounds as though you have learnt an amazing amount too... LHC will do that to ya, hehe!

Your pictures and post made me laugh out loud, I really enjoyed reading through it. Congratulations again, and here's to many more years of learning and growth :D

*BelievingAgain, I'm grateful for you kind words. Thanks. LHC is a great place to gather inspiration from other members! I have learned a lot, but still not enough, in the past year just by browsing through the threads and reading various posts. There is simply not enough time to view them all!

I'm glad to make you laugh, or anyone else for that matter. It's always good to bring cheer to those around you!

Congratulations on the year YC - your encouragment got me dutch braiding

Yay yellowchariot! I love your long haired knights name too :D

Thank you triumphator! I'm fond of wolves, so I was looking for a Native American name for wolf. I ran across two names that I thought were interesting to pick. . . either "Waya" (which is Cherokee) or "Shoemowetochawcawewahcatowe" (which is the Cheyenne name for "high-backed wolf")

Naturally, I went with the most epic sounding one :D :cheese:

I love the "caterpillar" on you. A very masculine way of braiding. Of course, you're totally rocking the dutch braid, too. Happy anniversary!!!

Now you've said at least twice that you have a certificate. You do realize that it must now be posted..... ;)
