Does anybody know how to do this? I've seen instructions for the regular bun style that tell you to brush the front part of your hair forward and then pull it back, but it looks terrible. (Even the pictures in the instructions usually look terrible, so I wonder if that was really how women used to do that style). Sorry, this was the best example of this style I could find. You can't really see that it's a ponytail from this angle:

A distant aunt of mine still wears her hair like this (longhaired too) and she doesn't backcomb for it. She takes the face framing strands and arranges them to look like this. Then she takes bobby pins a fixes it, buns her hair and is done with it. But she has relatively stiff and coarse hair, it mightn't work this easily for every one.
Nightshade has written an article about giving buns a gentle lift to make them look a little softer. It doesn't look exactly like this, but it might help you!

Unfortunatly the pics have been deleted, but it might give oyu an idea how my auntie does her hair.
