I have never went to the hairdresser on a regualar basis, but if I did, I can see myself having a hard time breaking the habit.

I used to go every 8-12 weeks depending on the style I was maintaining. I thought it was such a PITA to have to go that often. I could never have handled 4-5 week maintenance trims. It's been such a relief to only go about 3 times a year for high lights and once a year to a long hair salon for a trim. I have a friend who is doing my trims now. It's so nice not to have to go to a salon for that. I've always hated going to salons. I've always been uncomfortable emotionally and physically. I felt bullied and pushed around in the past. I used to be sick to my stomach and so nervous when it came time to go get a trim. I know some people say going to a salon is a time of luxurious pampering but I've never been able to see it that way. It's always been a nerve wracking ordeal I had to make myself get through, kind of like going for dental work :( I used to reward myself for getting a trim by promising myself some kind of a goodie for dealing with it.

Funny story how I stopped getting hair cuts.

When I was little and I had bangs I would go to get a hair cut when my hair would get in my eyes. When I was maybe 12 my dad was just too lazy to make an appointment, and my bangs got pushed to the side.

A month or so passed, and I just stopped getting hair cuts. Been a self-cutting long hair from then on. =P

I used to go to the salon every other week. I had a standing appointment. Thursday at 4:00 for a wash and set. I don't know when or why I started stretching the visits out, but I didn't really miss them when I did. Now I hope to never darker a slaon doorway again.

I got it a little bit. I started out from a regular guy's cut so going to get a trim was just so regular it became a habit really. It's just like breaking a habit. Takes a little bit of metal elbow grease just to keep up the "no." That and the fact I really finally wanted to start growing helped in that department!

hmm i never really went to the hairdresser that often.. we never had enough money to spend on hairdressers all the time.. i could understand why you might feel strange not going.. but think of all the money you are saving.. i never understood the consept of maintaining a haircut.. whenever i did get my hair cut i would get a different one every time.. my last one was so awful that i decided to grow my hair long.. im not so fond of hairdressers ever since.. i just never saw a reason why i should pay for something i could do myself so i hardly ever went to one..

one haircut=25$
haircut 8 times a year=200$
lots of money that i dont have

I never had 'regular' visits. I went every 5-10 months, really, when I decided my hair was getting 'too long' (ie I wore it up in a messy bun just about every day because it got in the way down), and I'd cut it back to shoulder-length, generally with layers.

After ten years of really short hair I went through withdrawal. I missed the scalp massage that I used to get from my regular hairdresser.

The answer for me was to trade scalp massages with a friend. We were both growing out from super short, so we also handled the little trims to keep everything looking neat. Since then, I've been to a hairdresser once in order to get everything evened out when I hit shoulder length. I've been doing my own trims since then about once a year.

I missed it to start with - not the actual hair cutting, but the scalp massage and having somebody else do nice things with my hair.
Now DH brushes my hair, I do neat up-dos myself (without the damage of a straightener) and I am finding collecting hairtoys far more interesting than cutting my hair every could be! :D
I don't miss them pointing out how dry my scalp is (my skin is very dry all over, so it would be a surprise if my scalp was normal!) or feeling dread and guilt each time I paid an exorbitant amount of money for something that wasn't going to last anyway.
I'm going to be a self-trimmer from now on. :D

Nope. Once I started living in "baby world" I went from 4 times a year to once, and I like it better. My stylist is great, and I'm considering going again in September for my annual trim, but then I think I could just have my husband cut it for free (been doing his hair for 10 years now) and spend the money I save on hair toys -- I mean save it! For my daughters' education and rainy days and home improvement projects. Yeah.

Yeah, kind of. I like my regular stylist - she's so sweet. I had my hair short and coloured for a long time, so I used to go every 6-8 weeks. Even when I grew out my hair from a pixie to shoulder length a few years ago, I was still going for a trim every 2-3 months to even out the layers.

I've been going to this stylist for a long time now. She knows my hair and she always does something great-looking with it. And I love getting something done for me - such a nice change from my regular life where I'm always doing something for someone else (DD and DH).

I haven't seen my stylist since October. I'll be getting a trim in July to tidy up my layers (before my sister's wedding) and I'm sure we'll have a really long chat to catch up with each other. :)

When I'm actively growing, I just don't think about the salon and the months fly by. I'd rather spend $30 on accessories and conditioner than a single haircut. I'm okay with going only once every year or two. The only thing I might miss is how good it feels when someone else washes my hair. LOL

I got the salon itch about a half a month ago, but decided to let it pass on its own. It has, and I'm glad on the length I received.
Actually, the LHC helped A LOT.
I decided to quit salons altogether and have my friend cut my hair.
She's trying to grow hers too (and REFUSED to cut mine when I wanted it all chopped off once) so at least I know I can trust her even when I can't trust myself.

Side note: Today my brother commented how nice and long my hair is getting and how much better I look. He's Mr.Macho man who never says nice things about appearance. YAY!

Me too. When I used to have longer hair than I do now, it was mostly that way because I was lazy and hated salons.

But now that I cut some off over the winter and "found out that it was curly," I haven't trimmed since February and the shape is already getting a little blah. Sigh, I feel the choice between long hair and curly hair is becoming imminent. My hair will probably be curlier than it once was, because I treat it differently now, but there is no denying that weight pulls out the curls. Which is why it sproinged up into curliness when I cut it in the first place.

Well, I'm purposely setting a goal of not trimming for a year precisely for that reason..I get the itch to cut my hair every so often, or when I am having a bad hair day, thus, keeping my hair short even though I want it long! (duh!) So yes, you're not alone.;)

I think maybe I missed something...I like salons. I don't like cutting my own hair, and my local guy trims it nice for $15 and has never trimmed more than the half inch I asked for. It's like a friend cutting it, 'cept I'm paying him. :)

Nope, I never really had a regular. I just went to whichever cheaper mall salon was the least crowded. I'm probably going to go here and there while my layers grow out, but after that I'm quite content with just having a friend or family member do microtrims.

Fortunately, I have never had an addictive personally- I'm not even a coffee drinker- though I do like herb tea, or sometimes Chai. At this point, I have a trustworthy hairdresser, and I've been trimming more lately, due to an interest in morrocco method. I actually wish that I could start learning the feyer self trimming method. I like by hairdresser, but the prices are always going up.
Also, any time you involve other people your bringing an another view point, another ego, and more energy into the mix. Of course a hairdresser wants to see you as often as they can as its there liveihood. If I lived alone it would be more possible to consider this, however, I live with a relative who prefers that I go to a hairdresser

I was never a fixture at the salon, and I always wondered what it was like to be on a first name basis with that one stylist like so many people are. The main reasons I ever went were either color correction or hacking off the hay  that was caused by damage, which was usually caused by the color correction:p Otherwise, the hair would grow, sometimes for a year even two, before I went. I'm now sticking to DIY approach, self trimming and self coloring because I have a lack of trust in the pro-short hair salon institutions. This is because I went for a trim one year ago and she hacked off 3 months of growth in one shot. :(

I go to the salon about twice a year. It's nice to indulge every now and then, and I'm not real good at cutting my own hair. I would never go to a high end salon unless I needed more than 2 inches off, or layers. The Hair Cuttery is fine for small trims.

I usually got a major haircut (2 or more inches cut off) during May/June, so yes. I'm getting a slight urge right now. My ends have been looking scraggly lately so maybe I'll do a tiny self-trim when I get some decent scissors.

I love your hair Beatnik Guy :) Back to the topic, I went to the hairdresser for a final cut as I hadn't trimmed my hair for a year and I knew it needed at least an inch or two cut off it. I always felt very nervous going to the hairdresser because a lot of them are scissor happy. I have my hair coloured but I love my hair stylist who had curly hair down to her waist and colours my hair exactly the way I wanted it to be. I only get my hair coloured every six months. I've never had a good relationship with a hairdresser. I've always chopped and changed. Part of that reason is because I have afro curly hair and most hairdressers in Australia do not know how to handle it.

I am actually still going to the hairdresser's but a different one. Not a salon but one that visits the home, which saves me a LOT of euros. And she knows what a microtrim is.

A normal average salon will ask on average about 20 euros (31usd) per visit. My current hairdresser gets 5 euros every 6-7 weeks for cutting the bangs, and 10 every 18-21 weeks when she cuts both bangs AND length.

salon going: 60
my hairdresser: 20

Net result: I could get me one 3 prong 60thstreet fork every quarter

no not really my hair when long before only got cut twice a year and my last visit was on 21/12/05 so nearly 3 years since ive been to one, ive terrified of going to one as last time i walked in with waist length hair and asked for a trim i came out with a cropped bob, so i do my own now.

I was at first. My hair seemed to grow out of the styles it was cut into so fast! Keeping it at just above my shoulders was time consuming.. and then there was the year I did highlights on top of that... full head o' honey blonde highlights on dark brown/almost black hair. It became like another errand to make sure my hair maintained the style it was meant to be cut into.

It was especially hard when it was growing out of those awkard stages at first. My usual answer to "Won't stay in a ponytail? To the salon! chop-chop-color Won't stay in my hair sticks? To the salon! chop-chop-color"

Luckily I still had some of my long hair toys from when my hair had been long before so that helped in a strange way. Knowing I could use them if I resisted giving up and chopping it all off.

I don't really miss it now that my hair is at a good stage to throw up with my hairsticks.

For most of my life, I've cut my hair to some length between chin and shoulder, decided to keep it that way, got too lazy before I even got another trim and let it grow out to about APL. At that point, I'd cut it again, let it grow...

So no, I'm not really getting the itch. I had my hair cut in March, to remove the split ends and the ends of my layers, which I can't do myself. I'm going to leave it now until September, when I'll try my first self-trim in the hopes of beginning to even up my layers.

OMG i totally feel the same way as you about salons. I always felt stressed out about it, because I felt bullied into whatever the sylist thougtht I should have done. And whenever I'd ask questions I was made to feel like an idiot. Needless to say going was enough to begin a panic attack. I'd almost on every vist have to go over and over again about how I wanted my hair and still they pushed and did whatever they thought was best. Needless to say I feel very FREE now not doing to salons and my hair is thanking me .

I didn't feel any kind of withdrawal when I first stopped going to the hairdresser's, mainly because I've always been pretty low maintenance when it comes to my hair and therefore also haven't felt the need to visit the salon very often.

But now, after two years without setting my foot to the hairdresser's, I've lately felt a strange strong urge to sit in the chair and let someone else have their go at the mop. But that is a whole different story.

I did. I used to go every 6-8 weeks for a trim. I very slowly increased the time between trims and have decided that every 3 months works perfectly for me. Every 4 months was too long; my ends would be a mess by then.

No. Salons always want to cut layers into my hair or give me bangs or thin it or something else completely not what I want. I also have bad memories of my mother dragging me into them and having them give me not only layers, but feathering it Farrah Fawcett style! EEEEK! Not only was I not enamoured with either look....but that style had gone out a good decade before that.

Yes! I went to the grocery store yesterday and saw a salon right next to it...I was feeling really depressed and in the past, when I get depressed,I chop off all my hair.I was so proud of my will power that I managed to walk right on by and get to where I needed to go.I am determined more than ever now to grow.It might take me forever but I'm looking for the day when some stranger walks up to me and says"wow!!!! your hair is sooooo long!" :)

The last time I visited anywhere that charged money for cutting hair was in 1969 (I was 14), and I hated it so much that I refused to go ever again.

I can see, though, that if salon visits have been part of your social life it is going to be hard to give them up. One solution might be to do something else - visit a friend, or go to an art gallery, or do something else you might enjoy, like buying something nice to eat from a specialist store, or buying a hair toy for later on.

For about 20 years I went to the salon for highlights and a trim every 8 - 10 weeks, depending on how unbearable the roots were.

Last year saw my "cut out all the bleach and start over" phase followed by henna - which got too dark! Most salons wouldn't highlight over henna, but I found one that did (after 8 months of henna red, followed by dark brown). So I didn't/couldn't go to a salon for aaages!!!

I often used to worry about whether they were going to make me too blonde or cut too much off. Then again, I remembered the occasions when the salon did it perfectly and I walked out feeling amazing...so yes I must have missed it!

So I went back to the highlights, but only a couple of times. Didn't look as good as I remembered, and the roots and salon visits were tiresome! Plus my hair was so trashed in comparison with virgin, henna'd hair.

So now I hendigo gloss making sure not to go too dark and I use Feye's self-trim. It is so liberating to not go at all (let alone hardly ever, like last year). I walk by them, especially Toni & Guy, home of the trendy chop 'n fry, and think happy thoughts about having control over how my hair looks! Frankly it is ... :magic:

Me too! I hated hairdresser appointments when the lady who cut my hair got carpal tunnel and had to quit. She was pretty nice and wouldn't have done anything I didn't ask her to do...unfortunately, my mother had her cut my hair into the most godawful style I can think of for a round-faced little girl with HUGE glasses. On a bimonthly basis. For the first 8 years of my life.

In addition to feeling bullied and not listened to and forced into things, I hate being touched by people that I'm not friends with, whether that's enemies or strangers it's all the same to me. It's really, really stressful (read: panic inducing) for me to HAVE to be touched, especially around my head and neck, for something to be done. The only reason dentist visits are worse is that they're making me hold my mouth open and they involve reclined chairs.

So, OP, no I didn't. I'd quit going and just trimmed/cut my own hair for a couple years before I started growing and now, I wouldn't dream of going to a stylist for ANYTHING.

I don't miss it and the wallet doesn't either. I used to get about four cuts a year and two highlights. I would scour the magazines for a new style to try - knowing that I would never be able to duplicate at home. I had the same layered style through the 90's and then cut to basically bangs and a bob - which I liked but the dh didn't - go figure.

I SO agree with all you say. I haven't had a trim for 6 months and keep putting off going back, even though the guy who does the actual cutting is really cute. I just hate sitting there with people fussing over me, not knowing whether to meet their eyes in the mirror, too nervous to make small talk! and you can't even enjoy the trashy magazines because I seem to move my head when I read :o which is not advisable.

Also I find the salon chairs hurt my back to sit in for the several hours it needed for my lowlights so I have several inches of natural hair right now (you can sort of see in my sig, near the scalp is more ashy than the ends). I'm going to reassess whether I really need them but to be honest I think they did give my face a lift, I feel rather frumpy without them all round my face.

I've never liked spending the $$$$ for regular hair cuts and the cheap places always butchered my hair. I've been trimming it regularly lately and it sucks. I can't wait until it gets long enough on the sides that I won't need it to be professionally done anymore (I'm growing it from pixie length).
