I want to start henna, but I'm rather paranoid about getting it wrong my first time, and so am tempted by the Lush bars. Has anyone here tried them? What were your results?
I've seen threads like this about Caca Brun, but never Rouge, and I want red.

Hi :)
I used to use the rouge ( I have medium ash brown) and thought it was a great starter henna. It's an Orangey red that becomes more red the more you use it... I only used 3 squares out of the block to colour shoulder length hair.. The lush henna isn't as strong as BAQ henna, so it is a good start for new henna heads. :)

It's an excellent way to ease yourself in to henna. I do, however, think it's more difficult to use than powdered, BAQ henna. The blocks are much more difficult to deal with than henna powder. The color is sheerer and more diluted than BAQ henna... it's like a strong henna gloss.

So buy two blocks just in case? My hair's only APL, but it takes at least three bottle of chemical dye to cover it. I ought to change my hairtype to iii.

Last time I used Lush rouge I used a whole block on about BSL hair but mines only ii/iii so it depends how much hair youve got to cover :)
Its a good way to ease into henna but I did find it much harder to wash out than regular henna powder, have lots of conditioner on hand for the wash out! :)
Good luck :)

This was the first henna i ever tried years ago. I found it much harder to mix up and there s a smell, i think clove oil that after a while made me feel ill. That said i liked the colour result and the shine it gave my hair.

I used to use Lush's Caca Rouge. I'd put the block in a bag and crush it up with a hammer which made it far easier to mix. I'd usually get 2 or 3 applications out of one block for tailbone length hair, but it's not very thick.
The stain isn't quite as strong as BAQ, but it's certainly a good introduction to henna. :)

Lush was a good intro to henna for me for the first year :) I have dark brown hair and have always used Rouge bars.
After switching to BAQ this month here are my conclusions:
My points for Lush bars: pre-mixed, smells nice for the first while, can use immediately after adding hot water
My points AGAINST Lush bars: hard to liquefy, large amount of product required, colour is not very strong, hard to wash out because of the oils in the mix, headaches after continuous use, high price
My points for BAQ: easier to use, a lot less product, colour is brighter, easier to wash out, super cheap price at a local Indian store
My points AGAINST BAQ: long dye release time, but I mix it in the morning and leave until the evening to apply overnight
I am now a BAQ convert :)

I second, third, fourth everything that has been said.
I enjoyed the Rouge henna and have alternated it with BAQ henna over the years. The Lush henna is easier for me to get, so being lazy and opting to do my henna at the last minute was my reason for choosing Lush.

I use the Marroon Henna and really like it. I agree that it isn't the easiest thing to work with (the very solid blocks) or wash out, but it gives me nice color. I'm planning on shopping around at our local Middle Eastern shop for some other hennas though, after hearing about some of them being a bit easier to use.

Thank you all for your answers! I do have a couple of more specific questions, though.
1) Have you had any trouble freezing the Lush henna after usage, in case there's extra?
2) I'm worried about over-orangyness but I want a true red, so I'm not going to use the marron. I know the indigo will fade, but I don't want it in my hair for now. Did any of you have to reapply a lot? How many times?

1) I haven't tried freezing it, I've always made too little
2) I am not sure you can get a true red out of Lush Rouge. It is orange-red and more on the orange side on my dark brown. It turns dark red with re-application (more towards burgundy) for me. The fresh roots are always orange-y, though.

I've never frozen Lush henna, though I don't imagine there would be any problems freezing it.
As for what colour you will get, all henna is on the orange side of red, to get a deeper less orangey red you will have to do several applications. Also how orange it is depends on your starting colour, it's much more noticeable on blondes than darker hair for instance. Lush's hennas aren't particularly strong so you're unlikely to end up with bright orange though, more a rich auburn.
But remember, henna oxidises during the first couple of days after application which means it gets darker. So if you end up with clown orange hair, don't fret, sit it out a couple of days and you should find it calms down. After that you can decide if you want to do further applications.

Yeah, I'm planning on waiting at least 3 days between reapplications. I'm a natural blonde, but I've been dyeing my hair with semi-perm dyes since the first week of high school, and my hair holds on to both color and perms REALLY well. I know it'll end up orangey no matter what, I was just wondering if there was an average number of reapplications to bring out the burgundy.
It has a warning on the website that it might melt in transit. Has this actually happened to anyone? I'm hoping to order soon.

Yes, I recently ordered some of the marron and it arrived partially melted. No worries though, I just popped it in the fridge for a bit and everything ended up being just fine!

Alright. I was wondering because it says it's 'minimally packaged', which seems...like a bad idea with something that might melt.

You can only freeze the rouge..the marron, brun and noir all contain indigo which doesn't freeze well.

I used to use Caca Rouge a lot, and I always got good results with it. I found it gave me as good a colour as any other store bought henna I've tried, though the pure powdered stuff I got from Jordan last time I was there gives way better results than I've ever got from anything else.
With the Caca Rouge, I used to grate the bars with a cheese grater before mixing and found this was absolutely the best way to go. I'd leave it on my head for 6 hours, because I wanted really strong results. This was about the colour I got from using it on my blonde hair. http://models.com/feed/?p=1031

Is that caca rouge in your sig pic? It is a really nice red, and I wonder what your virgin hair colour is and which henna you use. It is beautiful!!

If you want burgandy, I want to say it took maybe 3-4 full head applications for me to get there, and I left it on a good amount of time (around 4 hours). By the time I was done doing henna, my hair was a reddish purple, so once you get to a place you like, stop! Unless you like purple, in which case, full speed ahead :p

it colors good, you just have to stay 6-7 hours with it on. a big minus here- you have to stay indoors basically half of the day.

Or you could scarf it and enjoy a relaxing day outdoors! :D

I'm going to overnight it. Also, the indoors thing is not a big deal for me. Me= mega nerd. Also trying desperately to get rid of a very slight sunburn/tan (slight because it's old. it was SUPER PAINFUL when I got it.). I like being a pale redhead.

I use the caca noir which is in application the same as the caca rouge....
I suggest to crush or grate it on the cheese grater the block -as already mentioned above- before you put the hot water over it, it won't disolve otherwise. I left a little piece of the block uncrushed in the mixture to check if it would disolve- and, well, it didn't :(.
I like the conditioning qualities of the caca noir, I think in this respect the caca rouge will be quite the same.

I have used cacas brun and noir, didn't really grate it and it dissolved the chunks with really hot water pretty easily. Brun gave me this really caramel colour, which I didn't like, but my friends and family loved it. I went over with noir twice. That didn't give me a dark enough colour. Just light brown if compared to chemical hair dye. I never achieved black, and I was looking for brown black. It washes out pretty easy on me, but hair is shiny and healthy looking.
I've got my sister to use rouge and maroon. None of those cacas give her a bright colour as she had with chemical dye, but even her hairdresser noticed how much healthier her hair looks after 2 month. She is looking into ordering some pure henna to get brighter colour.
A friend of mine used caca noir on her dark blond, a shade lighter then my virgin hair, and she achieved exactly the same brown colour as I did.
It was something nice to try, but can't say I commit to cacas:)

I used the Caca Marron very recently and am happy with the results. My previous premixed hendigo product that I liked (I used it for glosses) was Light Mountain Henna's Mahogany, which was also good, just in powder form. I think that I like the Lush better because it has a lot more moisturizing properties from the cocoa butter. It is like a twofer color + intense conditioning!
I didn't grate the bar because my grater is metal and I thought that metal + henna was a no-no. So I just kind of crumbled the bar up into manageable crumb-sized pieces (using a plastic knife) and then added warm (not super hot, because of the indigo) water. I put the whole pyrex bowl over a bain marie to stir it and make sure everything was melted. Everything did fairly easily stir into the mix, I had to break up a few pieces with my stirring implement but they were no harder to mash around than, say, clumps of brown sugar.
I used two squares off of the block of six (1/3 of the bar) and it was barely enough to cover my hair, which is fine and between chin and shoulder length. Left it on for approximately 5 hours-- time was determined by strand tests that I did beforehand to make sure I would be okay with the results! :D
Anyhow, wish you the best of luck. Have fun with it, and remember that henna = variation. It will look wildly different depending on the light you are in. :)

I did my strand test today, as it arrived yesterday. Left it on the shed hair for around 4 1/2 hours. I like it! Definitely redder. I do believe I shall indeed become a hennahead, when DM can find time to help me.

Good luck LadyLately, I too have been researching Henna, my hair needs a good conditioning after going blonde, then brown, then blonde, then brown (which was only a demi and ended up peach, but alot of people commented on the colour suiting me!), dark blonde then wash-in wash-out browns.....phew! Fortunately I still have a full head of fairly good hair (which hasn't been cut for a year (long story short, had my bra strap length hair chopped off to and 2inch short last november, and wore a hat all winter!!! lol) I only chop in layers and fringe if I fancy! Just bought some Caca Rouge from Lush and wil be doing the deed this weekend if I get a chance.
LadyLately, let us know how it goes! x ;)

I use Lush henna but a mix of brun and marron. I don't grate mine just cover the blocks with boiling water and have a cup of tea, then by the time ive drunk it I just get an electric hand mixer and mix it up, add a big squeeze of coconut oil and away i go.....easy!
I love lush henna, mine takes about a week to show its true colour, it does fade a bit but not much and the best bit is as well as thickening my hair, it gives a mirror shine! and yes ive freezed it with no problem.

I am sitting here wondering if I have done the right thing now, I mixed my Caca Rouge with heated red wine a bit of lemon juice and boiling water.....I just re-read somthing on the hennaforhair.com webpage that you shouldn't mix henna with boiling water, but i was going by the instrutions in the 'Lush Times' paper!!!!....so am bricking it a bit if this goes wrong! oh...and talk about messy.....and...I'm sure the mixture was too thick?!?!?!? Am bored already and wanna wash it off as its getting late and I've only had it on for little over an hour!

erm....it turned out a bright orange/copper, hubby said it was nice. But I prefered the colour it was when it was wet...it was gorgeous, so I put the rest of the left over henna on....I used 8 squares last night and that wasn't really enough (as my hair is sooooo thick) and had 4 squares left this morning just enough to do the ends. I managed 3 hours hours last night, it took me over half an hour to get most of it out of my hair (what a bugger! lol). I'll post pics when it's all done girlies! x
