Ooh very nice indeed :) I cant really wrap my ends too tight atm as I have a little bit of dye damage, when get more growth and trim it off, I shall create something wild with just hair.

Hope you get some more replys soon :)

It seems we have a braid pic thread but no bun thread.

I want to see pics of your buns! Please add in what the bun is called so others can look them up.

Also, when quoting people, please take out the photos otherwise we have 7,000 doubleups of pics.

Without further adieu:

Thank you for the compliment :D The Chinese bun is not difficult, basically you either braid your hair or make two ponytails, then you show a stick in there and cross the two strands of hair over and under that stick until you run out of length, then you either pin the ends in place or join them together with a hair tie and hide them under the bun.

Here is a few good tutorials and if you do not figure it out from that just tell me what steps are a problem and I will try to make a tutorial for you, though since I have never done something like that before it might be a not to good one, I can try, however these fine ladies here do make good tutorials so I recommend them:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUT3KJgASac

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tTx9GcNB4A

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n98D0j8Ypfg

Also if you make the bun with one ponytail that you later split into two the bun with be more round and if you use two ponytails then it will be more flat.

Meishkamooshka you have some gorgeous buns there.

Practice updo I did for when I went to a wedding. In the end I ended up just doing a twist on the side instead of the lace braid. The bun is behind my left ear.

And last because I can't not included it. Its my favourite. Just playing around and the bun somehow turned into a heart

My first successful sock bun. :) My hair isn't this dark in real life by the way, it's just the camera.

ETA: I have a lot of difficulty with sock buns because of the simple reason I don't have enough hair to evenly go around the distribution of the sock! Does anyone have any tips for that? I had to take this bun out within ten minutes as sock was obviously visible through my hair and kirby grips weren't being very helpful!

I've fallen in love with the oval bun! How do you do the oval bun? I'm a complete bun newbie as the only 'buns' I know how to do are the 'half way through a ponytail and loop it' (I can't think of a better way to explain it!) bun and the twisting my hair into a bun look, both of which damage my hair badly, the split ends caused by these styles are unreal :(!

Would you say a bun is the best style for hair protection?

I've fallen in love with the oval bun! How do you do the oval bun? I'm a complete bun newbie as the only 'buns' I know how to do are the 'half way through a ponytail and loop it' (I can't think of a better way to explain it!) bun and the twisting my hair into a bun look, both of which damage my hair badly, the split ends caused by these styles are unreal :(!

Would you say a bun is the best style for hair protection?

Here you go, Britasian Dolly:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysyq-w96AWg&feature=plcp

As far as hair protection, just be sure your bun is not pulled tightly. I prefer sectioned buns because they're more comfortable to wear.

Madora that is gorgeous, just gorgeous how do you make those buns?

Thanks, Venefica!

The experimental bun 2 was a hairstyle that went awry. If you look in my blog "Saving a Hairsyle", you'll see how I did it.

The braided bun with stars was just two braids that were lace braided on the sides then braided down to the ends. The braids were then pinned in a double tier, and each end was then wound around and the tassle pinned under.

The rope bun was very loosely roped to create a soft effect.

This is a spiral bun or a vortex bun or whatever you want to call it. It is three strands and you have to excuse that it is messy since this is the first time I have ever used hairpins, I bought some Amish ones that arrived a few days ago and this is my first attempt at doing something with them, it took all 12 of them to get this bun up, but that might be that my hair pinning skills are not up to par.

Thank you for your kind compliments. I finished growing everything to the same length at jaw length and started growing down when I was 24 years old I am now 30.

I love the colour of your hair.

Thank you for your kind words Maybe, I bought it in a bottle or rather in two bottles. :P

Wow Wow Wow - All of you have such lovely hair & make amazing buns.

I did this today. The pencil bun is usually my go-to style as it's very quick and easy but I also like braided buns a lot so I tried a braided pencil bun to see if it would work. I've got just enough length for it! Quite pleased with how it looks, just about the only thing I don't like is that you can see the hair tie in there. Hopefully once I get a bit more length it won't be visible anymore!

With a 4" circumference at MBL/WL I could do one, it just wasn't as stable and was a little petered out at the bottom. Now it's more even-looking and stays better. There is a picture of my earlier attempt in my updos album if you're interested in seeing what it looked like. :)

My attempt at an alternate-method infinity bun: https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/?view=att&th=1398abb7be630ab4&attid=0.1&disp=inline&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P8DZLvFW-Utp87u8YR5WMQJ&sadet=1346653993986&sads=-nwzz2dVL1QtvUBApHBjx0oxoVU

I divided my hair in half and made a cinnabun out of the left half. I twisted the right half of my hair toward the right ear and twisted up and over to the left, surrounding the cinnabun and itself by going around counter-clockwise. I ran out of hair at the top of the whole assembly somewhere. I held all of it flat with my left hand while using my right hand to pull the right-most coil of the cinnabun over to the right, stretching as I went. I didn't pin the cinnabun; I had made it self-holding so I could do this. I covered the right-side twist with this coil and finally used a hairstick to secure. Well, it's not an infinity bun. I don't know what it is.

Tutorial is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2t0IMASesI)- but it will probably be quite a while before you can manage to do the helix bun. My hair is almost classic, and I felt that the taper if my hair was rather noticeable - not to mention all the fuzzy ends exploding out of the bun! I'd say you probably need hair as long as or longer than mine to get it to work.
And thank you for the compliments, spirals and lis_sing! :flower:

Sparrowspring: Lovely bun! What dpns did you use? I also use dpns as hair sticks, but the smallest size I've found easily are 5". Currently I'm using a 4" Knit Picks cable needle and love how it mostly hides in my bun.

meishkamooshka: Wow, what a lovely thick bun. Totally jealous of your volume.

How long of a stick is that?

September 5th, 2012, 02:27 PM
Thank you so much, Chimom & Maybe *blushes*! That stick is one of a pair, the first ones I owned long before discovering LHC. They are really cheap & crappy, from Claire's Accessories & I think I paid £1-2 for them! I haven't measured it but it's pretty long, I'd say around 7". They have a selection of them in from time to time, DD has some with cute transparent red butterflies on :)
Aww, you have made me feel so good about my hair today I'm gonna put that as my avatar now, thank you so much! :D

Keep the lovely pictures coming! As my pixie grows out, I'll need some inspiration to keep going when it gets bad!

When I was a kid I'd ALWAYS have my hair in a "bun" which was really just a ponytail I didn't pull through all the way. So glad those days are behind me now....

Yes, this what my daughter does most days. She is 10. I would love to do her hair. It's thick, 1B, APL and the most gorgeous colour.

Sometimes (like first day of school) she will let me do something. Just a lace rope braid into a side pony or some such thing.

Wow, look at the shine! Pretty bun and a nice stick too :)*grins* ... shiny, slippery & layered, so I'll be shocked if it's not a fuzzball of sticky out hair sometime very soon!

... actually, it's staying in very well considering ... much easier doing it with two braids instead of just the one, I don't have enough hair for one yet, so was trying out the double braided method suggested in another thread!

Thanks! x

This was really big when I was in high school (mid '90s). We used to do it with SKERRRRUNCHIES!! That was the hot updo.

I still see it from time to time - sometimes waaaaaay up on top of the head, sometimes with the loop thing fanned out like a slinky. I personally don't wear that style or much care for it.

Mid-nineties? Yeah, that's about right. I was in college. In high school it was either a french braid or a half-up ponytail. Every day. For four years. :cheese:

Inky, I have thick, layered hair. I find workarounds involving making two buns and combining somehow. For instance, to make a big cinnabun, I make a small one with one third of my hair and add strands to it as I go.

My attempts at a cinnabun:(

The first, using all my hair.

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh582/Sarahlabyrinth/FC-9.jpg

And the second using Spiral's ides of a sectioned bun - I used 3 sections of hair parted horizontally.

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh582/Sarahlabyrinth/FC-10.jpg

I just want a fat tidy good looking solid cinnabun, guess that just ain't goin' to happen at my length.

Which one do you guys think looks best on me?

Any suggestions of how I can do a new improved version?

My hair is about your length and my bun is about your size, it looks pretty tidy to me, on you. I don't think that there is really anything to do until you have more length. Sorry. It does look great now though

I think the first one looks much better. It's much tidier and solid looking.

I couldn't do a good cinnabun until I was about 25/26 inches, because my hair was too thick to stay up and look neat. Once you get some more length you'll find it easier.

I am so proud of myself. I learned this bun last night on youtube. It's an upside down Nautilus bun. I am truly only 19" and I hope I will be able to regularly do this bun, because it seems better for forks than the lazy wrap bun. This morning, it took me some finangling, and four tries, but I GOT IT. It held all day, even through changing forks three times for action shots. This is at the start of the day: (Does it look correct?)

Tried (again...) this bun Wildcat Diva suggested... my hair has been soaking in coco oil for 2 (?) days that I still didn't wash out, and the roots are soaking in rooibos tea - my whole head is kind of damp from either substance. So I expect my hair be more "flexible" and "bunnable" than dry...

This is what I got, but barely... I just don't have enough length - 31" at its longest as of today and not enough for this. First try on oiled hair...
