View Full Version : What IS this? - Old Hairtoy of Mine

I have this... hairtoy. I think I've had it since either junior or senior prom, although I've never worn it. Mainly because I can never figure out how.

It's some sort of barrette. The top part is curved, then there's like... I guess a tongue sort of part that is between the top and the bottom part. The tongue part touches the top part when I clip it shut.

I'll have to get a photo of the actual whatever it is later. I did a mouse-drawing of it, but for some reason neither photobucket or imageshack will let me upload it.

Are you sure it's a hair-toy?

Rofl, Merlin, you are going to be back in the naughty chair in no time with those sorts of comments! I think we will need some sort of picture though. For some reason I can't seem to get any sort of visual in my head and Merlin's comment is not helping!

The clip thing that you just put your hair into like a pony and snap it shut? The part in the middle looks sort of like a tongue :p

There's a part of me that knows what you're talking about, but it just won't come to the surface.

Waiting for pictures.

Loreley, I have a brown one of those, but the clip I have is metal with rhinestones going across the top.

I've done a (rather) bad mouse-drawing of it, but for the life of me I cannot get it to upload.. Oooh! Gallery! BRB.
duuuuuh.

It's not that thing in that movie either.

It looks like a ponytail barrette (http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=914061) to me. I'm not entirely sure how to use one, but that's what google thought.

That's it! Thank you!
Now to figure out how to use it.
This one here looks quite a bit like the one I have: http://shop.rhinestonesu.com/ProductImages/j_ponytail.jpg

From your drawing it looks to me like it's a ponytail holder.

Eeuh, well, you clip it around your ponytail instead of using a rubber band :p.

I have those too
and I know how to use it :D

It works like the mentioned barrettes on page one
(those: http://www.supplierlist.com/photo_images/17555/Barrette.jpg )

You stuff your hair in while itīs open
and when you close it your hair is supposed to be sandwiched between the big "U" (on you picture itīs on top) and the little bend in the middle.
I hope you know what I mean, itīs not easy to explain ;)

Itīs not very hairfriendly I suppose, havenīt used them for years...

That is a very cool thing, never seen one before. o_O I suppose it'd hold better than a normal barrette? I want one, because I love unusual things! :p

Ive got one of these I think (if your pic is reasonably accurate)

I use it as an alternative to a hair tie, to put a pony tail in, you can also roll up your hair in a chigon and you use it instead of heaps of pins.

The pack I bought mine in didnt have a name on it sadly , I just like buying strange hair things!

Thanks guys. It's definitely a ponytail barrette. Problem is, if I stuff all my ponytail hair in the top-half it won't shut and if I try the bottom half it just falls off.

Drat.

Yep, the same thing happens to me, too. And for me it's really hair-unfriendly. I've lost quite a few hair with it, and have never even properly worn one . Just tried it on, and decided it didn't work for me. Forgot about it, found it again, tried it on ....

It might look nice as a scarf clip, in case you need an alternative use.

What an interesting thread! I had no idea what it was either and when I saw the pics of the ponytail holder it all came together! It is a bit silly really, you couldn't have thick hair and wear these things, also I can see how they wouldn't be hair friendly at all!

I had one of these and the same thing happened to me. I pitched it after years of staring at it. :suspect: It is odd, isn't it? Why does that little "tongue" piece only go half way across the arch of the barrette?

I'm just guessing, but maybe the tongue can be pushed toward the opening of the clasp, in order to tighten the fit so that it will not fall off of a thin haired person's ponytail.

Nope. That tongue bit doesn't budge. It's firmly attached to the bottom portion that clips into the top.

When you say top or bottom half, are the halves separated by the tongue?

If so, I persist in thinking the tongue can be bent.

These clips are made of steel, and they are difficult to bend, but it can be done.

I have bent heavy steel hair clips with my hands, although they were not shaped like your clip, but the metal appears to be the same weight. It was difficult to bend because the metal is extremely hard.

I just kept trying, and it slowly bent. And that small amount of bending changed the the clip without breaking the clip or interfering with the locking mechanism.

Oh I know that. I think it's built for fine thin hair. You clamp the hair into it to form the U shape so your ponytail would look like it's pretty thick. :) If you actually have pretty thick hair then it wouldn't work too well. I used to have one before I gave it away. My pony is only 3.5" around and most barrettes don't fit. Sometimes I wonder if the hairtoys here are built for fine hair only.

Your hair is probably too thick for it. Have you tried a half up?

This is soooo brilliant, because I too have had one of those thingies in my hairtoy collection for ages and have never been able to get it to work. Which kind of bugged me because it always looked like it might be a really elegant ponytail holder. At least now I know it's not just me. I doubt it would work for people with very fine hair, because a) it would be very damaging and b) the hair could easily slip out on the unattached side of the tongue. Personally I've always wondered if it is for people with very very thick hair.

I had one of these when I was a kid, but used it on my ponytails for decoration only. I would secure the ponytail with elastic. Then, with the clip open, I would slide the "tongue" bit through my ponytail behind the elastic (i.e. closer to my head) and secure. It was really helpful because my hair is super slippery, and normal barrettes would just slide out within the first 5 minutes.
