Hello Everyone,

This is my first post here so please go easy on me. I am a rock drummer and have been in and out of bands since I was 16 years old. I am now 33 and have finally landed my dream gig. However this does come with some nightmares.

The Manager of the band loves my style of wardrobe and of course style of playing the music. However he is a little disappointed that I do not have the "rock-star long hair". He ordered me to go speak with some PR people that work with the band to discuss a new look for me.

Needless to say it has been suggested that I get hair extensions. I am very very very freaked by that. After doing some google-ing I found this board.

Can anyone please help me get pointed on the right track here. Before you ask a "wig" will just not work. They said extensions or they drop me and find another drummer.

I suppose I am just worried I will look too girlie?? not to mention going into a salon and having this done. And what do I do IF I do this glued in, clamp, really have respect for you gals with naturally long hair!!

Hope you gals can help a rocker with this :)

Yay to you for landing a gig!!!! I don't think you need to worry about looking "girlie" Loads of guys have long hair and look all the more manly for it. Don't worry about the salon either, when they see you I'm sure giggling and teasing is the last thing they'll do if you already have the rocker dress down. They've seen it all anyway. As for method, you'll probably need to do more research into it, but the hair dresser will be able to help you out on that decision. There are a LOT of different methods, and each has its ups and downs. DO try to get human hair, though, as it looks best and holds up well. I hope you figure this out! Good luck, and tear up some stage.

Oh yeah its for sure an awesome gig. Thanks!! I didn't want to make it sound like I didn't know what a rock star was suppose to look like. I grew up a rocker as I mentioned so yeah I know how it can look on most of those men. I think I am more worried about the "living" with long hair.

I have always been a clean cut when it came to my hair it was never shaggy or over my ears. So I guess its more the how to live it with it that really scares me.

Yeah since I made the first post I have been on you tube a million times watching things on extensions. There sure are a ton of information on it. Is there anyone here that has had any experiences with this? Or could maybe recommend someone who would be willing to explain it all to me?

I have no experience with extensions so I can't help you there, but the living aspect is a different story. If you take care of it (there are tons of tips on this site for that. Check out the articles section) things will go real smooth for you. If extensions are done right they shouldn't be shaggy or messy looking. You can keep it up so it is out of the way and your hair care routine would be simple. Just wash and condition as you usually do. Seriously, this place is great. Have a poke around and I guarantee you'll find very helpful info. There are plenty of long haired guys around here that im sure would be glad to give you advice on "living life as a long haired guy". Sorry I don't have more info for you on the extensions themselves. I tend to see them as regular hair just put on rather than grown out. The way it came to be is the only difference. Other than that you'd be just like any long haired guy by way of maintenance. Good luck and reach out to some of the LHC guys :)

You have been a great help and I can see a veteran at the long hair stuff. I think knowing that there are longed haired guys here on the forum maybe a useful thing!!

Wow the fact that you make it sound so easy :) LOL I am sure it is when you have been growing it out and you have a more day to day through the years type of thing going on. For me though its wake up with short 2" hair to 18-24" in a matter of hours. And then have to learn to live with it in a heartbeat.

Either way, if any of the guys see this post, I'd love to chat with ya.

Thanks again Petite Simone, you'll be on the VIP list when we come through your state or country (that is if I go through with it)!!

Huh. i don't see why having long hair is so amazingly important to be in a band, looks shouldn't matter as much as the actual music!

Hey Rockman. I'm actually a hairstylist, and I will tell you that in my own professional opinion that hair extensions really aren't the best way to go for a natural looking head of long hair. I have myself done some extensions on my clients, so I have indeed seen how extensions really look like on someone's head. To be honest, you can almost always tell if someone is wearing extensions on their head. But especially in your case, since your real hair is so short, the massive difference in length that would occur between your real hair and the extension hair would make the whole look rediculous to tell the truth.

If I were you, I'd simply patiently grow out my real hair. Your real hair would look much better and would obviously suit you better than extensions would. In the meantime, I really don't see why a man with short hair can't be in a band. I see plenty of artists out there who actually have short hair or in Chris Daughtry's case a totally shaved head, and they are making millions! If I were you, I would actually simply keep my own hair the way it is and grow it out naturally if you want it to be long.

Rockman33
July 29th, 2010, 12:25 AM
I could not agree with you more. If the music Rock's who cares!! But to be up front with you, all of the other members have long hair to at least chest length and management feels that I would be the outcast of the bunch. It's just not an avenue they want to go down. Which I totally respect.

Second let me thank you as a pro hairstylist weighing in on this is great. That's what I was looking for. I was told that my hair would have to be longer before the extensions were put in anyway for them to look "normal". So agreed at my current length it would be a stupid idea.

We (the band) are currently in rehearsals for a nationwide tour opening for a big name headliner. Of course I am not at liberty to express who that is at the present time. However, we have until October before we get the show on the road. Management was hoping to have me ready to go extensions wise by start of October so I'd have time to grow hair out a little more. I guess you can say if I don't go with their solution they will have to find someone else to replace me.

In your experiences with extensions that were not good, could you tell me the type they were?? Glued in or stitched in??

Thanks again, this forum is already turning out to be a useful tool!!

Rockman33

July 29th, 2010, 12:55 AM
Rockman, I work with strand by strand fusion extensions. I don't do any kind of glueing or stitching or anything of that sort, and please even if you eventually decide that you do want extensions DON'T and I repeat DON'T use the glue method or the stitching method. Both of those methods are extremely damaging to your real hair and will cause a lot of your real hair to eventually fall out because they damage the roots of your hair.

I have to warn you though, even strand by strand extensions are still somewhat damaging to your real hair. See, all kinds of extensions put extra weight on the roots of your hair, so that your hair is now not only supporting its own weight but it now is forced to support all the extra weight of all that extension hair. Over time, this can eventually lead to your own natural hair being literally pulled out because over time it simply can't support all that extra weight. So a lot of people who use hair extensions frequently often eventually develop bald spots.

If I were you, I would honestly really grow out my own hair. You are not damaging your own hair obviously and when it does eventually get long, you can totally claim that hair as your own real hair.

Welcome to LHC Rockman33 :henny:

I understand the dilema you are in. It sounds like to keep your job you will have to get the extensions. If you get them in October your hair will be an inch or so longer by this point, which may help a little. I am not a long-haired man but I do happily live with one - he happily lets me tie it up for him or braid at night. If you aren't into braiding you might want to look up Purplebudda's banded tail to help you contain your new locks and keep them tidy at night.

Hopefully you can grow out your own hair while using the extensions temporarily :rockerdud:

Awesome information Ericthegreat. I did see a few youtube videos on the fusion extensions. I was concerned by the glue in ones that's for sure. Are the fusion ones the one that are melted using the natural protein tips?? If so is that in a way the same as gluing them in? Seeing a video on how to remove them had me worried since it was basically paint thinner they are using to break the bond :) ? Sorry for my ignorance here but I think its been stressed my lack of knowledge.

I will for sure take your advise and grow my hair out long. But I am afraid that for me to be part of this gig I am going to need at least a temporary solution. I notice your in the NY area. I will be in that area as well this weekend. Maybe we can meet and go over this some more?

Congrats!! Sounds incredibly exciting.

To ease your mind, I do know that though you may have to baby your extensions a little more, often they wear like normal hair. Obviously you can't brush them too roughly, and have to be careful what products you use, but if they're high quality and human hair, you can wash and condition them like normal.

Best of luck in your new role! Welcome to LHC

Welcome on board Rockman33! First of all, don't worry about the looks, men used to have longer hair and I think it looks awesome! Short hair is nice, but I usually find long hair more charismatic on guys. I find it kind of ironic though, many long haired guys fear having to cut their hair to get or to keep a job, you need long hair to attain the same goal  it's a crazy world we live in, rock on though and best of luck with the gig!

Rockman33

Thanks for the welcome!!!

Yeah if I do this they will be stage quality human hair like a movie star would have. At least from what I am told. Management is willing to make the investment so that shows they really want me.

I will look into this banded tail you talking about. I can probably work a braid :)

So what your saying is I need to get me a girl from the concerts to help me with my hair :henny: (love that)!!!

thanks Acorn!!

I own two salons and we do every type of extensions you can get. So, my professional opinion is....... You will look ridiculous with extensions. Sorry. But it's so true ! There is no way to blend them with your short hair to the extent that they will convince anyone they are real. You will have short hair around your hairline and it will resemble a strange mullet. I cringe at the thought, but I BEG you to post photos if this actually happens..........
I know, I am awful.

Rockman33
July 29th, 2010, 02:21 AM
hahahahaha that is just fantastic!!!! Well as Ericthegreat had said the same thing I am really starting to think you are both right.

So as I still look for alternate ways to do this, could you maybe tell me what length my own hair would have to be to avoid the dreaded Mullet???? 4" or more???

I did read that the average length is 2-4" is needed for females to have this done. Have I read the wrong info??

and let the record show that I would not leave the salon if I did in fact have a mullet. The order would be take them out or shave my head. So pictures are just not an option ;) lol

I do thank you for filling me in on this golden nugget of info.

You are going to look like Mel Gibson in Braveheart. They had great extension mullets.......

Okay, in all seriousness, most women use extensions to give extra length or fullness. If all your length - and fullness - is coming from the extensions, it looks BAD.

Oh my, I just thought of the perfect example for you. You are going to look like Britney Spears when she saved her head ! She got extensions the minute her hair was long enough to attach them to and it looked like poo.
Shoot, I can't quit giggling. Good luck, Britney :)

Ok nuff said hahaha Let me then now shift gears and re-introduce the option of a wig. IF and thats a big IF I can convince management to for-go the extension idea. Could a wig be secured in a way that it would not move around doing the show??

I certainly do not head bang while drumming but I do move around. Wow this feel so awkward talking about this. The things we do to pay the bills geez.

It would have to be convincing to the audience not only on the stage but up close. I can't look like an old man with a bad rug on his head!! or Mel or Britney (which by the way was a great visual).

So lets discuss the wig option.

Rockman33

UltraBella
July 29th, 2010, 02:43 AM
I like the wig option a lot better. And yes, it can be thoroughly secured and it's really easy. I used to swim as a Mermaid for a living and I would put all my hair in a swim cap to protect it and wear a long wig instead. Never once did I have a wig malfunction.

Ok salon UltraBella :) hook a Rock-Man up with a rockstar wig. School me on this. Can we chat in private maybe so we can go over where to buy such a wig, how to secure it etc.

I'd like to have all my research done so I can present it to the powers to be. You have been a great help and I am looking forward to rocking out with the guys. If this all goes down I will owe you one :)

I think it would be best for us to chat about it right here, as there may be others who will be looking for similar info and could benefit from our posts.
You can buy nice quality wigs online, but I think it is always best if you can find one locally. Trying them on and seeing what you like, plus the fit and feel of each wig will be different.
Some beauty supply places will specialize in wigs and you can have someone help you measure your head, figure out the best way to secure for your needs, etc.
Also, many hospitals, cancer institutes, etc... have a wig salon. Often they sell very beautiful wigs to off-set the cost of providing free wigs to patients. This way you could help a good cause and purchase a wig all at the same time. And they will have someone who specializes in cutting wigs too, which may be handy in giving your new hair a more manly style.

Rockman33
July 29th, 2010, 03:10 AM
Once again my ignorance has gotten in the way. I do apologize, chatting in here could be a resource so your right.

I really feel that finding the best quality will be key to making this option work. I would want something that I suppose would be human hair, and not something that looks like it came from a Halloween store.

Also what type of lengths are we talking here. I did a quick search and it seems that short to medium length is the overall demand. I'd need it to be at least to mid-back and I am about 5'8".

You being in the industry and a former wig wearer (mermaid), is there a manufacture I should maybe seek or just take advise from local pro.

I almost feel like I should travel to you (where ever you are) since you know my situation (if its approved). As mentioned the thought of going into a ladies salon to have a wig or extensions applied sorta worries me. :)

Rockman33

UltraBella
July 29th, 2010, 03:27 AM
I have quite a bit of experience with wigs, but we only have two places locally that carry them, it is limited here.
Most places will have catalogs to show the styles they do not carry in stock, and you can get VERY long wigs. Mine was waist length and wavy. Yes, human hair is a must, and high quality. A well made wig will be expensive but will last for years, while extensions will have to be done over and over again.
Seeking out a local shop or professional will be your best place to begin. Depending on where you are located, you may have lots of options or very few.

July 29th, 2010, 03:27 AM
One thing you will have to keep in mind is that wigs are HOT. And if you're drumming away on a rock stage, under the big floodlights and especially those little spots, you are going to be absolutely miserable under that thing - so you want to make sure at the least that the one you end up with fits perfectly and is as high quality, lightweight and natural looking as it can be. Also, you would not necessarily have to go to a salon for a wig fitting - but even if you did, no one would be paying any attention - men go into salons all the time, we just don't really pay attention to them.

Honestly, you've mentioned now meeting two of our members - who don't even live anywhere near one another - face to face to discuss this situation in the space of a few posts. Doesn't your management have someone that you can consult with on this, or aren't there any local hair specialists you can speak with? I think it is great to come here for advice and suggestions, but ultimately it is going to be more time efficient and much more effective for you to meet with someone closer to you geographically, and someone who is recommended to you as an expert locally. Ultrabella (who is awesome!) and Eric the Great (also awesome) can only do so much for you in an online forum; you're going to need face time with someone and probably more than once. I'd suggest getting local recommendations and going from there. You don't have to just go to the first person you speak with to take care of this - you have time. Look around, get a lot of recommendations and advice both here and locally, THEN make up your mind.

Rockman33
July 29th, 2010, 03:45 AM
Well I certainly did want to offend anyone by my advise seeking and if I have I am sorry. I am just really hyped up about this gig and being a part of it. Certainly I am sure there are places near by me that I can go and find. Think I made it clear I am flying blind on all this. I figured if I went and found someone here that can help would make me feel more at ease.

On a lighter note I didn't think about the lights and heat generated. That is a valid point. I usually do have a fan or two blowing at my back to keep me cool and circulate the air. However, its certainly something to keep in mind (the heat). I would think it would be like wearing a stocking hat in 90' F :)

I am sure men go into salons all the time for haircuts and such but to be fitted for a wig that is of ladies length hmm ok I will play along and suck it up.

I will try and find a local place that deals with this sorta thing in my area. I'll be heading to NY this weekend so I am sure I can find someone there too.

Management had someone lined up for the extensions but I did not speak with them (obviously) or I would have had most of my questions answered. As far as the wig goes, I am just doing the research so I can convince them to 86 the extension idea.

Again I really want to thank you all for the info and hope I did not cross any lines or break any rules of the forum.

For the record, guys with long hair can be HAWT*, not girlie!

IMO, your best option is a high-quality wig that you can wear while you're growing out your real hair. If you get started with extensions, you're going to be going that route FOREVER b/c the damage will prevent you from ever growing out your real hair.

You might also want to check and see if mgmt. would be willing to let you do something "unconventional" but not "rocker long" so that you will still fit in with the group's vibe. Mohawk, funky colors, spikes, etc... there are all kinds of "different" things that you can do so you don't look conservative/traditional/whatever.

*Please, if you do go the long-hair route, take good care of your hair! Guys in my part of the country with long hair tend to look nasty b/c their hair is dirty / dried out / uncombed / whatever... and that is not hot at all! But a well-groomed head of hair can be very sexy on a guy.

I don't get why you need to have long hair to be in a band  I know you don't think so and I'm not rolling my eyes at you, I'm rolling them at the idiots.

Not all drummers need to have long hair.
Lars Ulrich (Metallica): http://youthoughtso.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/metallicas-lars-ulrich.jpg It was long when he was younger but he didn't suddenly look awful with short hair. Neither did he cease to be able to play the drums.

John Dolmayan (SOAD): http://realweezy.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/john-dolmayan.jpg I think he's always had short hair. As have/had the majority of the band.

Best of luck with the gig though :)

GRU:

I am pretty sure that the overall goal will be to go with the long haired look as close to chest level as I can get in a high quality wig.

I have spent most of the morning looking at pictures of famous actors and rockers that are able to pull it off. I think I am over the fact on how I will look with it. Now it's more the functionality of it.

Finding the right fit, dealing with the heat, and of course the overall "real" looking feel of it.

Aoife:

Yeah I agree with you. Nothing wrong with a short haired or no haired drummer in my book as long as they can Rock at their craft. Funny how you bring up hair with Lars. If you might recall the whole band cut their hair and thats when things got a little crazy for them. Fans started calling them sell outs. They got caught up in the circus that is the media as well for it.

The way i see it this morning, getting this gig is one if not the greatest achievement to date in my musical career. If I have to wear a wig to be part of the band, well so be it. With people like you guys/gals who have been helping I feel a lot better about the whole thing.

Thanks again ;)

You know, I recently saw ZOSO and then later they played another show up close and personal in a local bar. One of the guitar players had been wearing a wig on stage to better imitate Led Zeppelin and he didnt seem to have any problems at all (he was sans wig at the bar). Does Kiss wear wigs? I bet its really pretty common and there are people in the business who have the know how and could hook you up also.

Yeah I am sure there are plenty doing it (wearing wigs) just not something I ever had to do before :)

Kiss now that I look at some online pics of recent shows you might be right. Not to mention they are up in age, so longer hair may not be able to come their way as a young buck like myself lol.

I will be calling a few places in the next hour wish me luck :)

hey im new to this site as well. first I think you should consider do you really want to grow your hair, is it going to make you feel uncomfortable? hair is an expression of our personality. lots of rock stars have short hair and have done fine. i think this was unfair of your manager to say you have to change as ive always thought it was about the music and how good you are at playing. I hope i havent offended you with this post.
i've found that hair extensions to be a nightmare but that was my experience, if you look after them they should be fine
good luck :)

Good since you have short hair hair extensions would just look silly unless your going for a 80s mullet look.

Since its a wig you can take it off with ease and get on with your normal life without any noticeable changes in your hair since extensions will pull on your hair (if they are clip ins).

I suppose I could but then I am left with the Mullet possibility when walking around not on stage. At least I would gather. Wig is for sure the way to go. Can be rockstar and then shut it off when show is over ;)

What about a lace front wig instead? If your hair is too short for extentions to look decent a wig is probably the way to go - the lace front is quite versatile and looks relatively natural; Beyonce's is probably the best example of this type of wig. I've never had one myself but they seem to be pretty easy to maintain.

I wouldn't recommend glue-ins, not for damage sake really but for how impractical they are. My friend has recently had some and she has to go back to the salon about once a fortnight to get the ones she tears out re-applied (about 20 out of 200 a go). This seems like it would be hard to do on a tour!

And I have to say the irony in this is amazing. To me rock music is all about expressing who you are, and always inspires me (at least) to stay strong as an individual who doesn't quite fit into the mainstream ideals. For them to turn around and dictate a required hair style is a bit strange!

Regardless, I wish you well, and don't let messy hair let this opportunity slip by! I would have my hair looking a complete state every day if I got to go on tour with a band!

Hey Rockman33, I haven't read through the entire thread, but I have read the first page ( :D ) and I wanted to ask if synthetic dreads would be an option? They can be made to look really wild, and you just braid them into your existing hair. From what I've read, your hair needs to be at least 3" long, and yours is 2" long, but the average person's hair grows at a rate of .5" a month...

I totally understand if it wouldn't really work out for your genre though, just wanted to give you something else to research :P

Yeah dreads are not going to fit into the equation at all. But I do thank you for sending in your idea!!

Looks like it will be a wig for sure and probably chest level or what the ladies on the forum would call mid-back.

Hair will be 100% human hair if I can find the right length.

Rockman, you'll probably have BSL hair before you know it (BSL on a guy = below shoulderblade length).

One of my friends is the drummer in a metal band called Cold Shadow, they have a Myspace page (who doesn't?). He's currently rocking BSL ice-blond hair. I'ts to die for.

My DH grew out from the bog-standard corporate cut to BSL hair with fairytale ends in about 18 months (yes, it looks quite a bit like good ole' Mel in braveheart when he first wakes up), sending you good wishes that the wig-wearing days will be relatively few.

Extensions on a guy? Unless you want to rock the Brett Michaels bandana look, I don't think it works...

Oh, and welcome to LHC :)

Ok BSL is another new term. GREAT I am like learning a new language here. But yes BSL will be the goal for not only the wig but my own hair.

Glad I could get a chuckle out you. I swear I can hear the VH-1 behind the music video now. Band Shocked by the lose of their drummer due to OD on hair pills. If only he bought a wig :)

Why can't you just get a freaky hair cut and bleach the ends blonde or something. I actually think long hair on a drummer looks 'meh'. I'd rather look at your arms than your hair.

ETA: A wig made from human hair is HOT under normal circumstances....

Hey, didn't that actually happen to one of the Spinal Tap drummers?

Seriously, though, I too am glad that you have figured out a solution. Yet it amazes me that your management is more worried about the length of your hair than about the very real possibility of this extensions-or-wig story getting out. It seems like it would seriously damage your band's street cred. I cannot think of a single musical genre today that requires long hair. I just had a fun time doing Google Image searches of a few Gothic Metal bands, which would be my best guess for "long hair is required in this subgenre," and the only one I could think of that didn't have a bald or very short haired member was Moonspell.

This is why I have not said the name of the band or the management company :). I don't want to give away the family secrets. But keep in mind the band is part of a theme. So yes once again the need to look uniform is needed.

No, I'm not worried about your or your band's identity being leaked as a result of this discussion--but there is a chance that something will go wrong, either with the extensions or with the wig. And somebody is bound to notice.

Welcome to LHC!

I'm glad you've been able to resolve the wig vs. extensions issue. Sounds like a wig is going to be a MUCH better option.

One thing I do want to mention/advise is that you wear the wig A LOT before it's time for you guys to start touring. Most of us with long hair have had it for a while since we've been waiting for it to grow out, but even then, it GETS IN THE WAY! That is half the reason that a lot of us wear it up and back most of the time (and for protection, of course, but eventually, you get tired of closing your hair in the car door!). If you all of a sudden have BSL hair and you've had it close-cropped your entire life, it's going to seem like the biggest PITA for a while. Especially since you're a drummer, you might find that it gets in your face a lot, and will feel really weird on your arms. It is also going to be HOT, ESPECIALLY under all those lights.
But in general, it will fall in your face. It will stick to you when you sweat. It will get caught in the strangest things (seat belt in the car is the most common for me...).

So give yourself a little bit of time to get accustomed to the feeling of having long hair. Hopefully, you'll come to like it :) But it will probably be annoying at first. I've had long hair my entire life, I love it, but I still get annoyed at it sometimes.

Yes the sooner I get with these wig specialists this weekend the better off I think I am going to be. I'd like to get something picked out ASAP so I can have it on during the rehearsals. Lets face it thats when your allowed to mess things up and find solutions.

I think the sweating and the heat will be the most annoying part for me. I have seen the other band members who have had to deal with that. But like you said they have grown accustom to the hair on their head.

Thanks for the welcome and the "heads" up

Congrats on the gig! Whoo! How long is your hair now? I wonder if you could try dreads instead of extensions? Dreads don't have the same feel of femininity that's often associated with extensions. Dreads are also quite rocker-ish. Especially as they become longer (ps: dreads tend to get longer faster than regular hair, because they hair isn't shed and lost, but shed and trapped). Talk to your PR guy maybe? You could also do extensions for a while, until your own hair grows out. Maybe just get your extensions to your jaw? That's quite a masculine length IMO.

ETA: Oh, I see you already resolved this issue. Well, that's good! Enjoy your awesome dream job!

Good luck Rockman!

Ive been following the thread, have you settled on the wig choice yet?

Ive had extensions in the past and theyre HORRID, id never say "oh i know best" on something but in my experience they get all ratted and gnarly and uh they feel reall nasty like lots of little pony tails you cant take down and you cant really brush your hair or scrath your head! And if they have some weight in them they hurt a little if they havent been put in at the correct tension. I had them taken off after three days despite the significant cost!

So the wig is a great idea!

Congratulations on the band! Such a massive achivement! Go you! :cheer:

Thanks LouLaLa. I have not made a "choice" yet but I am now in NYC and going to meet with a wig specialist in about 2 hours. She is apparently going to show me some basic options with caps, length, and style. Then I'll have a better understanding on how it all works.

Then she will order everything and I will have to go back and have it fitted and cut and styled. That is of course if I choose this particular specialist.

It will be quite the experience I am sure. But the good news it's private and not in a major busy salon. I am told this is the unfortunate routine one would have to go through if they had cancer. Thankfully that is not my case. I do feel for those who do though :(

Oooh drummers= win! Welcome to the forum! :)

I seem to think the wig option is a great idea if you're not interested in really growing out your hair...though, long hair on a guy is awesome! Wigs can hold on well and come in a range or styles and colours so you can mix it up a little.
Have fun on your gig and rock those paradiddles! ;)

You made me crack up with the overdosing on hair pills thing.....HAHAHAHAHA!

Just to chime in....one of my favorite drummers happens to be Dave Grohl....he had long hair when in Nirvana.....it was awesome.

I didn't read through all the replies, so I may be echoing others.

I'm both a stylist and a metalhead/rocker, so I can give an opinion from both viewpoints. Extensions are going look obvious, and you most likely wont like them based on everything I read from you on the first page of comments.

As to the being forced or they'll find a new drummer, that just doesn't even make sense. If you're going to be drumming, it is not only more practical for you to have shorter hair, but very common. In fact, I don't know many drummers who have long rocker hair, many of them are short cropped and wear bandanas, or are bald. I've grown up in a family of drummers, and I've even played myself some. Do the people forcing you to get extensions have any idea how hot it gets drumming for long periods on a lit stage? Can they imagine it with a thick shag of hair?

How is having short hair going to make you stand out from the group? I know you say this is your dream gig, but it sounds like the potential for a nightmare to me. If they're actually going to drop you if you don't conform to their hair idea, then what's to say they aren't going to control your every move. To me, if you fold on this, they'll have you where they want you forever, and that just doesn't make for a good working relationship. Eventually squabbles, and resentment will come up.

Maybe you should ask them if wearing a bandana is possible for now, and that you'll start growing your hair out steadily, if that is what you choose. Or try telling them that the majority of fans don't give a thought to how a drummer looks, honestly unless you're Portnoy, Carey, Peart or up there with them, the drummer is often way overlooked.

Even I as a person who is passionate about drums, and always keep the drummer in my mind, and listens to them in the forefront, do not care how they look. It wouldn't even occur to me... I think you maybe need to reevaluate this job, not your hair.

That said, welcome to the board, if you are interested in growing longer hair, you're certainly in the right place.
ETA: Just saw that this is a themed band, and fitting in is important, so maybe my reply doesn't fit. Also the wig will be a better option, I am sure. They have great little clips and adjustment bands in the higher end ones that will ensure it "stays on your melon"..lol.

Echoes no man we are way past that into re-verb and feedback from the speakers!! :) But it's all good.

The key element of the whole on stage "show" is that the band comes off as a long haired rock band. I want to say out of the 80s but that's not the music we play. As I said before (echos again), they are not forcing me in the sense because they can...they are forcing me cause of the theme of the show!! It's like you do it and be a team player or we find someone who is. So I am not being told DO it or your fired I am being told...DO it cause we need to have it this way.

Not sure if that made any sense at all what I just wrote. Anyway bottom line is I am getting a wig and doing the gig ;)

I went to the wig specialist who let the record show was the sweetest little old lady you have ever seen. She wasn't 80 but she was in her early late 60s early 70s. She had been doing hair for years and now does wigs for people with breast cancer or other hair loss related diseases. (This by the way was a GREAT suggestion whoever posted that)

It was a very private consultation and she walked me through the entire process. She measured my head which I am not going to lie was a little awkward, but I did laugh it off. She then explained the differences between the lace wigs and other types of "caps". Really came down to the whole lightweight and heat factor here.

Then it was time to try some on. WOW is all I can say!! I really have a new found respect for you ladies!!! Hope this doesn't sound gay or anything cause lord knows I am not (to each their own though)...but Ladies its got to be tough having all that hair some of you have. I mean I tried on wigs that were only to shoulder length and I thought it was a lot. Not to mention the ones that were the target length of BSL (using the terms people take note). Some of you have it to your knees!!! DAMN!!

Anyway at this point I have a few catalogs that she has supplied me with to look through. It looks like I can get the 100% human hair wig to the length I am thinking the management wants me to have. However it will be all one length and will need to be cut to suit a more manly style...and less Ozzy Osbourne like. :)

I suppose now the idea is to pick a style and order it up. I do have to send this info to management tonight and get their take on it. Hard part is the catalogs are all ladies!! how am I suppose to visualize myself in a style for ladies :( any suggestions

Oh last thing. I was shocked to hear the total on the wig should only be about 1000 - 1800 $ max. I was expecting it to be so much more. Also 35% of the cost whatever it may be will be going to cancer research. I was pleased to hear that!!

I've been following this thread with interest. Welcome! Glad that you have found an option and I hope the management goes for it. I think they're silly to care so much about the "uniform" hair, but it's their choice, of course.

Someone else already mentioned the thing that came first to my mind - take time to get used to having long hair! Going from super short to BSL will be quite a shock. Most of us get there slowly, but you'll be going from 0-60 in 2 seconds!

It takes practice to handle long hair safely, especially in public. :) Since you've got to meet a 'look' I gather you won't be able to do what many of us do and just put it up. On the other hand, you can take off a wig. If you can wear it up in some circumstances consider some nice bone or horn sticks or forks, or maybe the short metal chopsticks from Garrett Wade (http://www.garrettwade.com/product.asp?pn=39C04.01).

In my opinion many of the simple, functional and elegant items and styles work for anyone.

And if you are going to grow out your own hair, you've come to the right place! There is so much information and a whole new language to learn, as I can see you've already been doing! Keep us informed!

Get extensions if you need to, but definitely be gentle with them because they can cause baldness. Work on growing out your own hair as well, so you don't have to have the extensions in for that long. When your hair hits shoulder length(which it might within a year), you probably won't need extensions.

Welcome Rockman33!

I agree that the wig is the best option until your own hair becomes long enough.

Incidentally, about 10% of the LHC members are men. We're a small group, but we're the most dedicated longhairs one would ever encounter.

I've had long hair for many years and have never been perceived as girly, especially since I also have a beard.

I would expect that you won't get any flack for having long hair since you are a musician. I wish you the best with your gig! :rockerdud
