View Full Version : At what length could you do a coronet braid?

Because in past discussions lots of people have used different definitions for the coronet braid/crown braid thing, I'll clarify: I'm talking about the kind that involves no french/dutch braiding, also referred to as a 'fake crown braid' where you plait at the nape, and pin it around your head :)

So, the coronet braid is one of my goals, and occasionally I English braid my hair and then pull it around my head to see if I'm anywhere near close -- which I never am :p I thought (once upon a time) that tailbone would be long enough, but now that I'm about 6-8" away from tailbone and my braid is more than 6" too short, I very much doubt it  And I don't have a massive head, either!

So, those of you with hair long enough to do this wonderful style, I'm just curious at what (minimum) length you could do it, so I can whine about how far away I am :p Thanks! :D

ETA: apparently I fail at making a poll, which I was going to do, so posts will be fine! They are better for specifics anyway (good excuse).

Just tried it, I'm just at tailbone. I can do it, but it looks bad because the ends are so fine. Snip snip soon...

I can make a fake fake crown braid, does that count? ;)
I can go around my head with hair close to hip (~32 inches) if I make two English braids and cross them over. They go quite a bit past each other's ends, so it was probably possible some time before now.

It looks fairly convincing if I put my hair in a ponytail with an elastic, divide it in two and braid the halves. That makes the two braids stay very close together at the back of my head.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this style as one of their hair goals. :) I'm at waist length and the hairband on my braid stops at just over the half-way point round my head. I reckon I'll need to be at classic to do it comfortably, but probably half-way between tailbone and classic to attempt it.

There is a great video on YouTube of how to do a coronet braid with Torrin Page. It looks like it would take some practice...her videos are great and her hair is about tailbone length I think...check them out!

Mine works better if I start with a side-braid. I think this became possible on the long side of tailbone length.

My hair is actually in that "style" right now. It's fluffing up all over the place because I started with a top-of-head sleep braid that slipped down sideways during the night, and I just didn't feel like taking it out and combing, so I wrapped and claw-clipped it in place instead.

freckles, I think it really depends on how thick a person's hair is and the texture (fine, medium, or coarse). For my hair type, I had to reach 50 inches to be able to wrap a braid around my head with enough at the end to tuck under. At my present length (guessing at 55 inches), I can go about a third around on the second wrap.

HTHs...:)

I think I managed that style a bit past tailbone length, but my hair is really fine and has a LOT of taper... which makes it kind of hard to make the braid end stick to where it's supposed to be ;)

To be able to do this and have it balance comfortably is my next length goal (though I've been trying to get thickness first, and it's taking forever!).

I can almost do the style if I braid all the way to the ends and set the braid back a little bit. If I were to do a coronet braid the way I want to (braid at the nape, wrapped in front of the bumps to the side of the crown, roughly at the coronal suture), I think I'd need about classic length. But I've got a big head.

I was going to suggest this also. Splitting the hair into two braids means they only have to cover half the distance. I've got about 3"-4" more until I can do this successfully myself, though I like it better from the back if you cross the braid-bases before you wrap. 'Til then I'm doing Heidi braids, because it's close enough to satisfy the itch for that particular look.

For me the braid itself would have to be at least 28" long, including the tassel, so I could tuck the ends in and hide them. I am currently at about 6" from TBL, and the braid is about 9" too short. I lose about 5" of length to the braid, which is about 25% of braid length or 20% of overall length (from nape of neck, not hairline). So to get 9" of additional braid I would need about a foot of additional length.

So...classic?

I'm at tailbone, and I still can't do it properly. My tassle almost touches the beginning of the braid, but not quite yet... I think I need maybe 2-3 more inches...

I'm at a bit past tailbone length, and I don't have enough to tuck.
I suppose if I pinned it all down, it would look somewhat decent, even if the braid end doesn't touch the braid beginning at the bottom, but I think I need to wait a few more inches.

I've been able to do the dutch crown braid style for quite a while, though, and I prefer it since it hides taper better. :)

The fake crown braid started to work for me at about classic length, which roughly is 40 inches if I remember that correctly.

Classic is about when it started working for me, or maybe a little shorter.

Thanks guys for all your answers! So the overwhelming opinion seems to be that it might work for some people on the long side of tailbone, but more often people need classic length. That's not really the answer I wanted (I'm not sure yet if I want to grow any longer than tailbone) :p but it's good to know! :)

Yeah, my double braids will meet and then some in the center now (if I don't cross them over at the back, but start them low) but I can't work out how to hide the tassels nicely. Besides, I know it's silly, but it's more the 'idea' of the style than the 'look' of the style that I'm in love with -- like, look, my hair goes all round my head! Okay, I can't articulate it. But thanks all the same!

Sounds like you're in the same place as me, mine goes a little over halfway around, too.

I've seen that tutorial, which is what I would call a 'crown braid' (it's a dutch/lace braid version). It's super cool, but torrin struggled with it and I'm far less adept with updos than her, I don't think I'll ever be able to do that. I prefer the look/idea of the coronet braid anyway. Thankyou though :)

I think this is what I would do, too. I think my ends would be too thin to look convincing, otherwise.

Look for Torrin's video on Elizabethan Hair Taping. It is a really pretty style and is closer to what we've been talking about here. She does have that video about the crown braid which I've attempted. It's way too hard. I can do the hair taping, though. It's just my hair isn't quite long enough to look like Torrin's. Not that my hair will ever look like hers. We're just about polar opposites in hair typing. Anyway...have a look at the hair taping vid. It's really cool.

Inspired by a few success reports on a different forum, I tried it, and I could do a true crown braid with my APL hair. It kind of looked like crap though so I took it down. I'm sure with a few more tries it will work better. Anyway, I think it's easier with shorter hair than with hair Torrin's length.

As for the fake crown braid, does it add up if you measure the circumference of your head plus a few inches for tucking the tassel? If I do that, I get 25 inches for the braid plus maybe three inches for tucking, meaning I should be able to do it at iliac length. That's a good three years away for me.

I've done this hairstyle before and my hair isn't even fully waist length yet! Here is the pin where I got the idea, (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/348325352400719398/) but without a rope/twist braid, just three English braids. I actually got A LOT of compliments on it!

When my hair was TBL, I could get the braid about 2/3 of the way around my head....so I'm thinking that at classic, I might be able to do it. We'll see. :)

Classic is the earliest that I can completely tuck my tassel under the braid.

My hair is now at TB again, but I, too, have quite a taper - fairytale ends! - so my braid looks great for the first couple of inches, then goes down to nothing. Wrapping it around my head looks pretty crummy.

Another thing that works is my beloved paranda(s)! I can get pretty great coronet braids with them, if I want to do only a single braid. Otherwise, the two braids wound works fine.

I'm about 2 inches past classic, and I'm just barely at the length where I can do a crown braid. But I'm pretty short (about 5'2"), so that length on me I'd only around 43 inches.

The pigtail variation that was mentioned near the start of the thread is technically called "Milkmaid braids," just to muddy the names up further. :)

I could just barely do milkmaid braids when my hair was midback-length (the braids just managed to meet in the center), and I'd need almost waist-length hair to pull it off properly.

Since my hair is coarse and a nearly four-inch ponytail, even a plain braid at almost-waist only goes three-fourths around my head--and my head is pretty small, since I'm only five feet. I might need to wait until classic-length or longer to do a coronet braid, so I think milkmaid braids or a proper crown braid would be an easier goal.

I'm at 47" (a little beyond fingertip on me) and can just barely get the entire tassel tucked under the braid. If I don't section well enough and wind up with a longer tassel, it doesn't quite reach. And since my hair has thickened a lot since joining LHC, I have a lot of taper, which leads to a very awkward-feeling, unbalanced coronet braid. It's really nice with a paranda braided in about 6" from my neck, though.

I tried a Dutch crown braid once. My hair tangled horribly, my arms got very sore, and my fingers tried to tie themselves in knots. I gave up about halfway through. I've only succeeded in doing a Dutch braid maybe twice, though.

I don't think you mean crown braids. Regular crown braid can usually done at APL/BSL.

I just tried it on hair that's 3" away from tailbone and nope, not even close - unless I wanted to braid right the way to the tips, the tassel finishes behind my ear, and I think to look good this style would need for you to be able to tuck the end of the braid under quite comfortably so I'm guessing it would be classic at the minimum on me.

Yeah me too, I tried it for the first (and only) time at waist. I managed to get it up and looking "artfully messy" but when I took it out it was tangle city so that style is in the "Looks Nice on Other People" basket for me until I get better at updos in general

It all depends on how thick your hair is.Mine isn't all that thick, I'd say on the thinner side of medium, and I can do it at tailbone. I start with a side braid almost under my ear and pin as I wrap, making sure the end tucks back under the start of the braid. For a real crown braid, if you're really good or have someone to do it for you, you should be able to do it at chin length+

I realised that I'm closing in on the coronet braid! I'm at TBL/40"/100 cm and guesstimate that CL/46"/115 cm would probably do it, like quite a few have said above. With a rope braid I might even manage a bit earlier than that. Considering my only socialisation these days seem to be via Zoom I may just do a half-a**ed coronet because no one is going to see that the braid doesn't close at the back

I would love to be able to do this hairstyle eventually, but for now I do a cheat version that looks elegant without being too complicated. My hair is not long enough yet and the ends are too thin to try it for real.
I do two dutch braids like regular, and then I cross those in the back and bring them back up and cross then

There's a really pretty variation of this called "the Madora" after an old LHC member. There's a description here (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?p=3513566#post3513566) if you're interested :)

Also I tried making a half-a**ed coronet today, it ends behind the ear!

I pulled my English braid around my head yesterday just to see and holy moley I’m gonna need about double the length I have now to get ‘er done! I love my thick hair so I’m not complaining but braids eat up length on me and end abruptly, so pinned braid styles don’t look as polished on me as they might on someone else.

I think you must be talking about the crown braid that you do by taking hair from sections all around your head?

vs. Coronet braid which is when you take a single English braid and wrap it around your head.

I don't have the skill to do a crown braid, I could manage a coronet braid around classic. Maybe a little bit before.

OOH this is exciting! I just wrapped an english braid around my head a la knobbly and I think I need about 4-5" more of solid braid for it to work with a smidge of respectability.
