Hey,

First of all - I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this thread

I'm new to this forum - I'm glad I found a forum for long hair because all hair styles forums (including "long hair" ones = shoulder) do not address issues for people with long hair.

Normally I just have my hair up in a ponytail or just letting it down when it looks nice LOL.... looking for hairstyles with my length of hair = no success so I hope I get to see/learn from this forum.

Here goes... I found the following hairstyle that I would like to try:
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6861/1587green0.jpg
http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/1914/1587green1.jpg

Me:
-Hair a little longer than my waste
-Think black hair with reddish streaks (I have bangs not as much as the pictures above too)
-Straight-ish/Wavy-ish (more straight-ish)

I believe I can pull the large curl look well... but I honestly don't know how to do it....

I have a heat protectant spray (which I haven't used yet)... and I did get a iron curler - but the curls lasted for a possible 5 minutes if that.... then my hair because wavy - possible because of my hair length/weight/no hairspray

So my questions:
-How wide should my hair curler be? What heat setting (degrees)?
-For hairspray - any recommendations because I hate it if it's sticky/clumpy and I honestly don't know what/where to start when it comes to this since I've never used spray before
-Should I use anything on my hair before I curl it other than the heat protectant? How about after - only the hairspray

Would appreciate any advice I could get.

Hi,

I think you're possibly in the wrong place for advice on flat / curling irons and hairspray advice; most of the members here find these items horribly damaging to our hair and my initial thought was 'temperature: Step AWAY from the irons.., hairspray: step AWAY from the hairspray'. In any case it sounds as though your hair doesn't seem to respond to heat styling (mine doesn't either, back when I used to make the attempts it would take a couple of hours to get anything close to the effect I wanted and it would all go back to its normal wave and texture in about the same length of time.

The previous poster linked some great non-damaging methods for getting big beautiful curls without heat or chemicals. If you have any frizz, you might like to try using a little aloe gel as a serum to make the curls look a lot sleeker (a lot of the members here swear by it, though I've never found any to try), or I get really good results with coconut oil (just the regular food grade stuff).. take a thumbnail sized lump, melt between your hands and work through with your palms and fingers.. you can always add more if you need it!

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the forum!

^You're right my hair really don't respond to heat... unless they add spray or whatever the hair salon does... it's straight-ish but sometimes it does develop waves... I remember one time I wanted to make it super straight but with a flat iron it didn't work as well as it did when I placed it in giant rolls and slept with it (does that make sense oO?)

Either way I appreciate all help and the links are wonderful!!!! I'll try the methods in 2 days when I have a good amount of sleep available lol!

I've never heard of aloe gel serum but I'll look into it 'cause I do have some frizz when I dry my hair (normally it disappears within 1 day but it still looks funny especially when you have a hair popping out near your head)

I'll try one of the methods and get back to you ^^

I can get that curl pattern with large caruso rollers, but I have a lot of curl in my hair to start.

I'd recommend Caruso steam rollers and a good hairspray to hold the curl.

A very good hairspray is Sebastion Shaper Plus.

Check this out

I just bought these rollers to basically get the same style (only I don't have bangs/a fringe). This is an ebay add but if you scroll down it's pretty much the same hairstyle. If you do a search for soft rollers there are alot of these kinds of things, ones shaped like strawberries etc that will give a similar effect.

I personally would go for paritally dry hair (maybe 50% dry having run gel through it when quite wet), curl up and leave until the morning.

My hair actually holds curl better when I forego the hairspray, and don't use any styling products except water to dampen the hair before I curl it. Hairspray seems to weigh the curls down, and they fall out in a few minutes, while my hair will hold curl pretty well on its own. :)

That style looks super cute, but it also looks like it might be a wig, from the way all the hair seems to be growing out of the same point on the top of her head.

You've received some great advice here on various curling techniques, so I don't have much to add except I'd be really interested to see photos if you decide to try this out. :)

It's okay to ask things like this here. This forum is all about HAIR not necessarily just the way some people want to take care of theirs. Many of us use hairspray and flat irons or even chemical dye sometimes . It's okay if some don't agree. But this forum is not just for natural haired people. :)

BTW, I think that hairstyle is gorgeous!!! I wonder if she has some layers in her hair. Hard to tell.

Thanks for all the great feedback!

I tried the Loepsie (http://www.youtube.com/user/Loepsie)curling method - definitely got the curls... but lol my head looked like a mane! I guess I have more hair than her (stupid me should have realized) so I combined it out and it turned to nice big waves - still a lot of volume so I used a bandana to try to "push" it together and try to de-volumize it. So turns out I have thicker hair than I thought (which is both a good and bad thing)... I guess my question is should I use a de-volumizing cream/spray before I attempt any heat-less curling methods ('cause I figured I'd probably get a lot of volume from any method I try) - if so any suggestions... or maybe something after I curl my hair (sorry if I sound stupid but honestly up until now I just have a ponytail, variations of buns or my hair done)

Also thanks for the eBay link! I just bought those and will give them a shot when I get them immediately (should be around 1 1/2-2 1/2 weeks since it's overseas)

I've seen them do that kind of a curl on video. You open the curling iron, put it near your scalp (an inch or two from the roots), pick up a strand, and wind it around the barrel of the curling iron. The ends are in contact with the curling iron for maybe a second, then you remove the curling iron. You never clamp the hair into the curling iron for this. It gives that open, wavy spiral curl that you linked.
