So I just watched An Education with my mother just tonight and I loved Carey Mulligan's hair in this. All of her fabulous updos. My hair skills in putting my own hair up are limited to a bun and some of these looked a bit more complicated than that. So, of course, I thought of this site. I just don't know what her updos styles were and I would love to know... so anyone offer any help? I would just appreciate it oh so much.

I tried Google Images searching this and I didn't come up with many good shots of her hair, I guess most people don't watch movies to observe the hair styles... weird, right? So here's what I've got:

Oh and the movie is supposedly 1960's London if that helps.

P.S. I don't know if this is topic-appropriate for this section, please let me know if it isn't!

The 4th might be some variation of a french twist... As for the others, I have absolutely no idea... They look complicated...

The style where she piles it all up on her head is so pretty! That was my grandmother's style too, she always looked so stylish with her blond pile of hair, heels, big chunky handbag and Jackie O clothes!

This looks just like my hair when I remove my hot rollers!

I set my hot rollers on top of my head because they have a tendency to be too heavy and fall off, and when I remove them, I gently slide them out of the center of the curl. This tends to leave a tube shape. After I remove all of the rollers, I shake my hair or flip it upside down to loosen the curls at once.

If you were to set your hair in rollers and remove the roller, you would be left with a bed of curls that you could easily pin in place.

Thankyou! I now have something else to try for my challenge :D :cheese:

I read a vintage blog written by a lady from Australia- the vintage hairstyles she does are jawdroppingly THUD. Maybe you can get some inspiration there? I've emailed her about certain hairstyles several times, and she's been very helpful. Here's the link: http://www.superkawaiimama.com.au/tag/hair/

I hope it works!

I am in love with hot rollers, you can create so many looks with them. Whenever we performed "Amadeus", we did a similar method to create a a piled curls look. You use hot rollers or curling irons and create loose ringlets and bobby pin the curls into a pile, then leave one accent curl to hang and rest around your shoulder and onto your chest.

Think Kiera Knightley (http://www.halloween-costume-stores.net/2009/05/take-ride-with-pirates-of-caribbean.html) from Pirates, but more curls and less front poof.

I like the sound of this alot! i may sleep in some bendy rollers or rags as im trying to avoid heat atm, but i may use some as a special treat if non heat curls wont hold the style.

I love your creativity! Thankyou soo much :D

Bendy rollers and rags work really well.

The past few nights, I've used thick strips of rags to create gentle waves.

I saw An Education last night - fab film. We were discussing the hairstyles as we watched. Talking to my mum, we decided that the flat, wide curled bun on top could well be a hairpiece - which would be authentic to the period as people used them a lot then. My mum (who had pretty great hair in the 60s anyway) certainly did. Perhaps the Rosamund Pike character (Helen?) helped her out with this as she did with the clothes?

Still, I'd love to know if it can be done securely with real hair so will give it a try one of these days - might need to wait a few months though....

Ooh, I love this film!

I also love the hair (and outfits) that appear in it, especially the blue dress Carey Mulligan's character wears in Paris (in a couple of those pics linked).

Take a look at this style (http://www.hairarchives.com/private/archive2/early70supdo/evolution2.htm). It may give you an idea about how to get started, without the teasing of course. Actually, the whole site (http://www.hairarchives.com/private/archivesnew.htm#french) has some good instructions for vintage hairstyles.
