Now the combs remain. More than any other hair accessories, the antique and vintage combs tie us to those gone-from-us-times, those we gaze back upon, as simple, sweet, naive. And speeding along the crowded expressways of our lives, we long for those days. Sadly we accept the fact they are now lost to us, that what remains of these earlier lives, their tales of joy, struggle, adventure, comes to us in the folds of a gilded fog of misplaced memories, merely told to us, not our own.
These bits of lovely hair jewelry are left to us, adorned on these earlier women when they put on their best to run and meet a lover, or when a more demure look was called for when supping with a friend. Some of these combs were special to them, some they liked well enough, some they would give little thought to at all - just as we do now with the accessories we use to adorn our styles, match our moods.
Though the years have marched along unrelenting, and the tunes to which they danced have changed, the true and honest hearts that beat within us all are so much the same. And it is this that calls to us when we turn to the classical combs - the joining of our lives with those of others, a connection that is otherwise impossible. To admit to, and welcome, the tide of history in this swirling ocean of humanity in which we all swim for our lives every day.
And so it is, in this most welcome of all seasons, I’m offering up lovely florals, bright-glowing stones, spring-in-your-hair colors to brighten the gloom of rain-swept days - for you to wear with pride and others to enjoy the lovely view when you come into sight. With the lifting of the final veil of winter, we are reminded once again to rejoice in all of life’s sweet goodness!
