View Full Version : Gentle(r) Shampoos

I'm considering shifting from CO every day to s/c every other day. And then maybe stretching it from there if I can. This means that I'll be using shampoo more than I have for almost a year.
I still plan to shampoo with a sulphate shampoo once a week to rid myself of silicone build-up. But, I was wondering if there were gentler shampoos that I could use in between. Enough to clean my hair, but not strip it too badly.
It doesn't really matter if they are a bit expensive because I dilute my shampoos quite a bit.
Any ideas?

The only shampoo I allow to touch my strands is Tonic&guys moisture injection shampoo. Very gentle stuff

There was one I liked over the summer when I was swimming in a pool several times a day (and often shampooing afterwards because it was faster than trying to CO when I had to guard the pool in the next half hour), Neutrogena Triple Moisture, which was quite cheap. It has got one sulphate, Sodium Trideceth Sulphate, as well as Dimethicone, but that shouldn't be a problem if you're a conehead.

How about shampoo bars?!

I've heard lots of good things about Aubrey Organics. They're completely sulphate-free and also only use organic and natural ingredients.

I had trouble with the Aubrey Organics line - my sense of smell is weirdly sensitive, and the perfumes that Aubrey uses are too strong.
I use the California Baby Super Sensitive Hair & Body Wash, when there's extra, or I use DevaChan LowPoo. They also make a "NoPoo" that works for my cousin, who has very dry hair.

I tried that Neutrogena stuff and it made my scalp itch and burn like MAD.
You can try the Queen Helene Mint Julep shampoo from Sally's.

I vote for shampoo bars! I use the Chagrin Valley ones, and I am in love with them. :D
I do know that they don't work for everyone (especially for some people with very hard water), so if you've already tried them and hated them, then just ignore this post.

I use the Kiss My Face Whenever when I only need something light.

The whole line of Charles Worthington. Their moisturizing shampoo is awesome. And you can dilute it to at least half strength and it still works perfectly

Jason (pretty much any type) is my gentlest all-time fave.

I've been using Ellin Lavar's Texture line (from CVS drugstores or online) for a good while now. It seems quite gentle, and doesn't have much fragrance.
The shampoo's quite gentle, and moisturizing, so sometimes I skip conditioner.
(FWIW, Creme of Nature makes my head itch. Hair looks great, but wow the itchiness. I had to give it up.)

Have you tried Alba organics? They're supposed to have some gentle shampoos.
Or maybe Nature's Gate or Kissmyface.
I used Dabur Vatika before I switched to CO. I still use it during the summer when I have
to get oceanwater out. Before that I used Kissmyface and loved it.

So far everyone who replied suggested something different! Well, I won't break the trend.
Anything from the Kenra line of shampoo (http://www.kenra.com/) is very gentle.
About Kenra Shampoos: Almost all shampoos use the same surfactant: Sodium Laureth Sulfate. This substance has a problem: it's made up of molecules small enough to penetrate the hair shaft, depleting its moisture and damaging its internal structure. Kenra uses Sodium Myreth Sulfate. It's made up of larger molecules - too large to permeate a hair shaft. This enables Kenra Shampoos to clean as well as the alternatives, without their drying drawbacks. The result: an effective cleanser that is still gentle and mild on hair and skin.
I use the Moisturizing shampoo which seems gentle enough, but if you want to avoid sulphates go for one with "platinum" in the name.
A while back Kenra was giving away free samples (up to 11 bottles with 1oz each per person!) to anyone who asked for one and stated they were from LHC/looking for a good shampoo. If you check the archive boards you can find lots of info about Kenra. I'm a product ho, so I'm not exactly Kenra loyal for every shampoo day, but if I could only have 1 Kenra would be my choice.
May I ask why you are thinking of switching to 'poo? Did daily CO not give good results for you or are you just trying to extend days between washing?

Thanks for the link, I had never heard of Kenra.
I think she mentioned she wants to extend the time between her washings, or I could have had some kind of crazy hallucinations brought on by all this bloody dust flying around from cleaning. ;)

Wow, thank you for all of your replies and suggestions. Ya'll are great! :flower:

CO has made my hair beautiful. It works just fine. But, I have to do it every day to keep my oily scalp at bay. I'd like to extend the days between washing.
Also, my ends are getting thinner and thinner. Maybe stretching washes (and so, fooling with it less) will help that problem, too. On the other hand shampooing more could make it worse...
I still haven't decided if I want to do it. Whenever I try to stretch washes it winds up being a disaster for my scalp. To the point of me scratching it bloody in my sleep...

I have a very sensitive skin and scalp and i find simple rich repair shampoo or any of the simple shampoo range work well and are specially formulated for sensitivity prone scalps etc

Hairboutique (http://mp.hairboutique.com/Burts-Bees/B/16) carries some of the line, but not the haircare, at the moment. (Can't remember if they've carried it in the past.)

I really like Natures Gate- I've used both the herbal and the Henna (not really henna) and they both work well for me.
