Hi, could someone please point me in the direction of the instructions for the rope braid which then turns into a rose bun ?
TIA

A rose bun is just another name for a rope bun. There is an article on it in the articles section. There is also a link in my signature. :)

I just tried this for the first time today! I like it a lot and it's one of the most secure feeling ones I've every tried (pic in my album)
Good luck figuring it out, I know it took me a few tries this morning! :D

Thank you, Cscheck! My rope braid is only about four inches long at this point, so no bun yet, but I'm so excited that I finally understand how to do the first step!

My braid is short too, so I've found that I can do a sort of rope bun if I do two rope braids instead of just one.

Yay!!! I remember the excitement when I finally got one working correctly and it actually stayed together! Yay for you!
I have yet to try the bun version though, and I need to, I absolutely love the look.

Do you do three-strand or two-strand braids? My hair's too short to do a proper rope braid (due to layers and thickness) but I just had a thought that maybe a three-strand braid would eat up less length than a two-strand one.

I usually do a rope bun from two, two-strand rope braids. I ponytail first, then I separate into two parts. I rope braid one and then wrap it round the rest of the hair and hold it in place with a pin. Then I rope braid the second and wrap it round the outside, take out the pin and hold it all with a hairstick/fork/ficcare. Two braids instead of one means I lose less length because they are thinner.
I can just about get a single two- or three-strand braid into a bun (one of the few advantages of having fine hair) but doing a bun from two braids gives a more even look. I've never tried from two, three-strand briads, I'll have to see what I can do.

A three stand is probably going to amplify the eating effect, not diminish it. If you think about it, the strands have to go around more hair each time you braid (in relation to a two strand braid). So I highly doubt it would eat up less hair.
Have you tried a French rope braid? Just like a French braid except you are doing the rope instead of the regular braid. That would probably work with layers and such.

My reasoning was that each of the three strands in the three-strand is thinner, but yours makes more sense.
The thing with the French rope is that, although it takes in layers on the way, they still tend to poke out further down so the braid gets very fuzzy.

Thanks, Masara - that's a good idea. I'll give it a try and see what happens. :)

This is one of my favorite "fancy" styles! Works for every occasion. :]

The two-strand idea sounds like one I may be able to pull off. The regular rose bun has not worked for me yet (hair's still too short :(), but I'll try the two-stranded one. Thanks for the suggestion, Masara!
