Recently I have found I have splits running up and down my BSL hair. A lot of my hairs are diffrent lengths, and some of the shorter ones are broken or split.
I don't know what to do! I thought my hair was in good condition for chemically treated hair until now.
My goal is WL.
My questions are
1. What happens to splits or broken hairs if you dont trim them?
2. What should I do to my hair to "fix" it?
3. If I have to do a trim, how do I ensure that my splits and broken hairs are trimmes since a lot of my hair is diffrent lengths?
4. Will I need a big chop?

It is always trickier to trim hair that has varying lengths. I don't know if you self trim, but I like the method where you twist a small piece of hair until just the ends stick out and then trim those that need it. I find that my splits cause more tangles, which in turn leads to more splits, so I keep my trimmed as much as possible.
If it is any consolation, my hair splits whether I chemically color treat it or not. I just consider frequent trims a necessary part of my hair care routine.

Thanks, I will give that a try. It will take so long cause I have so much hair!

I have the same problem from old layers that I'm still growing out. I'd avoid a big chop - a certain number of splits are unavoidable - but a full S&D session (followed by a microtrim if you feel the need) might help make the problem seem less daunting. I use the same method Ravenreed describes, twisting strands and looking for the splits that peek out - there's an article here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=146).

I think the twisted self trim and a lot of babying / oiling / protective styles are in order : /

If you have a small- moderate amount of splits then S&D might suffice however you really should do a trim especially if you have a lot of splits. Even if you do need to do a big trim you can greatly reduce your number of splits in the future by doing S&D regularly. I find that they show up better when I look at my hair against a contrasting background (black paper if you are blonde and white paper if you have dark hair).
Good luck! :)

I had this happen to me and when I thought about it, I hadn't had a trim in 7 months. So off I went and had a one inch trim which turned out to be a two inch trim and since then (march) my splits are more maintainable.
I do S & D fairly regularly and find that most of my splitting is happening to the hairs that grow from the nape of my neck. I think they are the ones that get caught in my seatbelt, bag straps etc so I'm guess that's the root of the damage.
If you only find, say 20 splits in one sitting, I would think that it would be fairly under control and you could continue with S & D on a regular basis. If you are finding so many splits that you can't cut one off without finding another ten as you do so, then I would advise getting a small trim now to get them under control.
Good luck and let us know how you go.

I'll answer question one, since everyone missed that ;). The damage travels further up the strand, required more length to be trimmed off. The best thing you can do is as soon as you notice damage is to S&D it with very sharp hair only scissors.
