I got my hair cut yesterday. I was planning to get it on the shorter side, but it is too short! I am kinda panicking now because the stylist said it would be below my shoulder and it isn't! I've never had my hair this short before and now I don't like how it looks :( Here is a photo below, from when the stylist did the styling yesterday but I'm pretty sure I can't replicate what she did...for one thing she used a round brush and I can never seem to get that to work. I tried to style it myself today but it just looks bad!

I have an event I'm going to this weekend and I wanted my hair to look cute but now I can't figure out a way to style it that looks good!
Does anyone know anything about styling layered hair?

Well, you could try to curl it with sponge rollers and then use some pretty pins to style it? You would have some more volume, it coud look cute. Styling shorter hair is something that i think most of us have no idea, as this is a long hair community. I hope it grows back soon :)

Try and see if a sock bun will work on your length.

This looks quite a bit like the style I cut my hair in a couple of years ago.

I made my hair look nice using large rollers. Back then I used my jumbo Caruso rollers when I wanted a bit more curl or I used my set of hot rollers when I just wanted to smooth the hair and give it a bit of a lift. I believe that I used flocked hot rollers on my hair for this particular event.

As my hair grew I put it up with hairsticks as soon as I was able and I've kept my hair up quite a bit for the past few months to get over the awkward growing out phase. I'm slowly working out of it but I swear I'm not cutting it short again, EVER!

I'd also recomment blowing dry upside down for volume, then pinning the front hair on both sides of your head, except the bangs. This hair would be really cute if you do a 40s style bobs as inspiration.

I think your hair looks still good.

You could try doing a French Twist or just make a ponytail and forget about your hair until it is below shoulder which won't last that long.

Btw: Your nickname is the same I used in another forum :D

Xia, I grew mine out from pixie, and though mine was a bit longer before I started trying to put it up, I think my first real updo was a sorta-french-like twist held with what was called a "bear claw" clip.

Yep, this thing (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.scrunchies.com/img/items/043194167746B-1.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.scrunchies.com/index.cfm%3Ftempl%3Daccessories&h=98&w=98&sz=5&hl=en&start=18&um=1&tbnid=PgvVpDxv7Xg7uM:&tbnh=81&tbnw=81&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhair%2B%2522bear%2Bclaw%2522%2Bclip%2 6um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive), (ETA, you'll have to scroll down to the second row, tried to link to a single pic but it didn't take,) except I think mine may have been black. Looks like they make them in more than one size, and I've seen a couple of more decorative versions of the same concept at department stores in the accessories section (jewelry, etc.,) rather than with the hair stuff.

I also found something similar but with a cute faux enamel design when I cut my own hair back too far recently. Not layered, and not quite as short as yours either, but I think that type of clip/clamp would probably still work. :agree:

Ok this is what I came up with today after I went out and bought a curling iron... Does this look ok do you think, or should I try something different?? (ignore the bangs, I messed them up!)

When my hair was seriously layered, like yours an about the same length, I used big hot rollers (not too hot, though) to add volume & a little curl. Worked great until I got to a point where I could put my hair up again. And it was kinda fun.

You could try something like that....or use the curling iron you bought....

One of my chops was similar to yours - what I thought looked really cute was little claw clips holding pieces back leaving some wispy bangs in the front. The fancier the clip you get the idea. You might also try twisting and bobby pinning some sections back. BTW I like the pic with the curling iron. I think once you get used to the length you will find some comfortable styles - plus it will always grow.

Xia - I like the curls! They look really cute!

I was going to suggest hot rollers, but when I had hair your length they'd never stay in - if you can get them to stay, go for it. It would be a bit gentler to your hair, overall.
