I really need help in figuring out how to find the thickness of your hair. Can anybody further explain the proseess and may show pics of how to do it?

Make sure you gather all of your hair in a pony tail, and measure the circumference at the base of the ponytail.
It's as simple as that, and the amount of inches (translated http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=8954) determines the thickness.

So do you put your hair in an elastic after gathering it all? What if you can't fit your bangs in? (like me)

Yes, you put it in an elastic and measure right behind the elastic, where you hair is still compressed. Don't worry about your bangs, they won't add that much to the total.

How tight do you know to make the elastic around your hair?

Tight as you can reasonably go. You want to measure the circumference of your hair, not air.
