I'm packing for my vacation and trying to decide what to bring. We're going to Hawaii for a week, and will spend a lot of time in the ocean snorkeling and swimming around. :cheese:
I need to keep my hair contained and out of the snorkel straps , so I'm thinking Flexi-8's and Ketylo Aquapearls for swimming. Would it be crazy to wear a Ficcare in ocean water? They hold perfectly, but I don't want to ruin mine. How about dymondwood, is it okay in ocean water for a few hours?

I wouldn't submerge any of those in water. Especially not the ficcare. how about a nice secure french braid with an elastic on the bottom, or if you must have a bun get some Good Hair Days magic grip pins from Sally's, they're plastic and won't be affected by the water.

I am going through the same thing. I decided on some corian sticks. I got some from Screamin' Norwegian (http://www.etsy.com/search_results_shop.php?search_query=corian&search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_7460720). I know Chevelure on etsy also makes them and I requested a custom.

Yeah, the Ficcare was wishful thinking. I'll probably bring one, but save it for times when we're out of the water.
The Aquapearls should be fine, they're glorified plastic. Unless they have some weird reaction to strong sunlight that I'm unaware of, I can't imagine them having a problem.
I've gotten out of the habit of wearing braids, but I guess I should get used to the idea.

I know somebody around here mentioned using a plain Ficcare for swimming, although that was pool water rather than ocean.

I'd worry about sticks falling out. A good braid (or two) is really the best way to go in my opinion.

Why not a swim cap? Silicone if you want to keep your hair dry (drier, it will probably still get damp), Lycra if you just want to keep it from being yanked on by the snorkel straps.

The last time I was in that situation, I relied on nice, snug dutch braids. I would braid with conditioner in my hair, but I've since been informed that conditioner is not good for ocean life, although when compared to - say - crude oil, it seems pretty benign. Next time I'll use coconut oil instead (or some other oil).

A hairstick would come out while you were in the ocean. Unless you plan on not going underwater.
The most carefree way to secure your hair would be an elastic; it would hold your hair, and it wouldn't matter if it was ruined by the sea water.

What about Wavelength-Pins?

Another vote for braids. Hair-safe elastics are cheap and easily replaceable, and with my hair at least, they're the only thing that holds when it's wet. The extra weight, movement and manipulation on the stick in a submerged bun just wouldn't be secure for me.
