My friend has curly hair but does not want to keep it long because when it's long it won't hold curls that nice. I don't know anything about curly hair. Can you point me to an article or a site where she can get info how to get long hair and keep her curls? She doesn't want to come here or read forums because her husband would not approve.

Get her the book Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey, it is an excellent starting point :)

www.naturallycurly.com is a great website for tips and advice, the forum is where most of the information is, so your friend may not be able to access it.

Before that book arrives she will have cut it.

And no, she can't access forum information. Any forum. She specifically said so.

Although it sounds like an awful idea, a few layers in canopy will display curl pattern. Layers should be long, not ear-length.

She might be surprised with what her hair will do if she gives it "the curly girl treatment" instead of "the everybody else treatment".

My hair in the back will reach the top of the old "vertical smile" if I stretch it out, although it's about waist when in its normal state:

And while the crown area of my head is a bit more "wavy" than "curly" it's still not straight by any means:

Not sure if her husband will allow her to get on the internet at all (), but here are some articles that you could print for her:

You'll also find all kinds of real-life experiences in our own Curly-Wurly thread: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=369 but it would depend on if her husband would give her permission to view it. ()

This is a little beside the point but why the hell would the husband not approve and furthermore what right does he have not to?

You could try showing her pictures of people who have long, curly hair. GRU and I being two lovely examples, if I do say so myself.

DEFINITELY, Quixii -- even though I have curls too, I am SO jealous of your hair -- it's so beautiful!!! I wish I'd known then what you know now about curly hair care back in the Stone Ages when I was your age!!!!

It is about socialising online. That's what he is against. Internet articles should be fine but I will in fact print it for her. I don't want to mess with their business.

Also, show her the "triangle head" that can afflict curlies if they don't have that weight holding the ends down!

That should be enough to scare her into leaving her hair long! :D

(yes, that is me, back in 1997, with bangs and layers and just a teensy tiny bit of frizz :p)

Could you recommend some curl-enhancing products for her? I've heard great things about Jessicurl and DevaCurl, which could really help her hair get it's curliness back :)

She should get some long layers if she wants to keep it long. Does she want to keep it long or are you just the friend who can't bear to see it cut? I have curly hair and I will tell you it does not look the same at every length. Maybe she is right and her hair doesn't look the way she wants it to when it's long. And maybe long layers will fix that and maybe they won't. Ultimately, it is her hair and it is going to be fine no matter what she does.

I have short hair at the moment and I don't have a triangle puff! Well-placed layers fix all. Long live the layers. Also never underestimate the power of really good conditioners and styling products. But seriously, layers. GOOD layers. Bad ones are...bad. Jessicurl.com. Just sayin'.

my friend Jade has tail bone length curly hair and she has lots of curls still waves up top but curls none the less and takes her 4 hours to straighten it with a 2 1/2 inch flat iron and its nearly to her knees.

Waaaaait I missed something. Is it tailbone length or nearly to her knees? And why would she bother straightening it?

That one threw me for a minute, too, Quixii -- my guess is that it's tailbone when curled, nearly to knees when straightened.

(And yeah, I don't get why she would bother straightening. :crazyq:)

There are articles you can print if you search 'curly girl'.

You could also buy the book offline. They sell it at Barnes and Noble.

o.o

I think her hair not curling as much when it gets longer is the LEAST of her problems!

She wants long hair if she can make it curly enough. Her mother is jelous of her hair. All the more reason to get it long I say :). Thanks, it feels so good you could help me help her. She's going to try those advice.

The biggest thing for curlies is moisture, moisture, moisture. If you had told me a year ago that I'd be leaving regular conditioner on my hair after a shower, I would have told you that you were :crazyq: !!! But it REALLY REALLY works -- my hair doesn't get greasy or sticky or dull or anything from having the extra conditioner in it -- it just soaks the whole thing up completely!

I really second this! This is the biggest change I've made for my hair- I used to just use a little teeny bit of rinse-out conditioner, and then wonder why my hair was dry. Now I rinse-out, then leave in, then a little oil on the ends, and I just keep adding more layers of conditioning between washes. My hair really eats it up, and lots of curlies find the same.

I like long layers, myself- I actually just got some more cut in. But she really needs to ask around for a stylist who's good with curls if she wants to go that route- bad layers will make you cry.
