Just curious - why winter solstice styles on the first day of summer?

I think it's winter solstice in the southern hemisphere:)

Yep Spidermom the festivals are flipped round once you cross the equator - it can be a little confusing :)

I wore my new Nightblooming hair sticks that I bought especially as they look like they are carved out of ice - very appropriate for a winter festival. I'm sorry my hair is wet in this picture but it was the only chance I had to get it so I had to make do

I'm probably going plain today with the hair down and maybe a hair crown

I thought of that after I'd already posted. Oops; my bad.

Of course the OP is in North America (if the location under the avatar is correct), which would make this the summer solstice for her.

What a cool (pun intended) idea! I just had to give it a go... so here's my midwinter style - with snow!

The decoration is actually a snowflake necklace I made, temporarily doing duty as a... hairlace? I'm wearing snowflake earrings too, just to hammer the theme home, but the photo doesn't really show that.

embee, the style is a flipped bun. Here's a video tutorial (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7581080099802811376#) by Hypnotica. :)

How did you attach the necklace?

Cindi, I just pinned it at the top. slipping the pins out of sight under the bun, and then tucked the necklace ends around the perimeter of the bun. I could have pinned the ends but they got sufficiently snagged on my hair that I didn't need to.

Thank you. I have lots of necklaces that I no longer wear, I never thought of wearing them in my hair. My husband is making wooden hair sticks now to sell in his booth and I'm recycling my old earrings as decorations on the sticks.

That's a cute bun. There's no way to have a bad hair day with that hehe. If I'm staying home all day, I might try something like that.
__________
I really want longer hair and have been thinking about cheating hehe. A little bit of hair extensions (http://www.proextensions.com) and some highlights are really tempting. I'll try to stay true though :blushing:

I don't celebrate winter solstice, but here's what I did for the holidays:

January 11th, 2011, 07:38 AM
Yes, and it's 4cm wide, that's why it shows up so well :-)

I makes a lovely accent on your hair color :flower: I want to try ribbons too. Doesn't it slide off? I know it must keep better in a bun but yet...?

I really like the flip bun and it holds better than I though it would!

I tied the ribbon on one of the strands, one strand I braided and one strand normal, then braided it all together and bunned it.
The ribbon never moved as it was neatly packed in ;-)

Oh thanks for your reply, eresh, I just saw it :) Now I have an unexpected problem of finding a ribbon. It seems people do not use them any more, they are unheard of at hair' or other accessories shops. I think I should try craft shops maybe...
In my childhood they were easily found in sundry shops or fancygoods depts. I'm feeling ancient :D

Yes hobby/craftshops usually have them, and also fabric/sewingshops :-)

Love the ribbon do, eresh.

I can't remember if it was exactly winter solstice, but I definitely had this hairstyle within a few days of it:

I didn't do this specifically for solstice, BUT I would not resist playing with all the holiday ribbons & bows:

This was my holidays updo for this year: 3 braids braided (1st day I let it down as a big braid, 2nd day I put it up like this)
Bunned with 1 M flexi as the centre, the rest wrapped around and 2 amish pins to hold it, added 5 sparkly pink pins for ... sparkle :-)
