What do you find are the best (cone free or with cones) conditioners out there for softer and silkier looking - and feeling - hair? Preferably shop-bought.

Softer = Aussie Moist.
Silkier = Finesse Moisturizing and L'Oreal Smooth Vive(although this one can weigh down fine straight hair)
All have cones.
Hope that helps. :flower:

Giovanni Deep Conditioner - softer AND silkier. Excellent for very damaged hair or too-much-proteined hair. Cone-free, organic stuff. Very rich!

I have NEVER found anything that makes my hair feel more delicious than Karen's Body Beautiful Deep Conditioner (http://www.karensbodybeautiful.com/product_p/1005.htm) (cone free). It states it is best for thick, kinky, curly hair, but I have ii hair that is slightly curly/wavy, and it works like a CHARM for me.
It is deceptively light when you put it in your hand, but when you apply it to your hair it melts in like butter and then kind of feels like it has disappeared. At first I was a bit alarmed, but now I understand that that is just how it does its magic.
Since I found this conditioner, my hair always feels smooth and silky. Man, I love it! :inlove:

Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner does wonderful things for my hair - you can get it at most health food stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or Vitamin Shoppe.
I also really like SheaMoisture's Moisture Retention line (look for the gold labeled products, the pink and black label ones aren't as conditioning IMHO), the regular conditioner (in a pump bottle) and the deep conditioner (in a screw topped tub) are both really nice and you can find both at Target.
Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition (emerald green bottle) conditioners are all really nice as well. You can find them anywhere - Target, Walmart, Walgreens, even the regular old grocery store.
All of those ones are protein and silicone free.
Edit; I just saw you were in the UK, ha. So the SheaMoisture ones might not be available, I'm not sure. The other two might be though...

I just wanted to note that this product does have protein in it (also, ethylhexylglycerin and phenoxyethanol, if you care). joiekimochi, did you try this on hair with too much protein and notice a positive result?
Sadly, I have nothing to offer -- I'm looking for the same myself, sans protein. :/

Yes my hair was super proteined and really velcro-ey, thanks to my stylist's misconception that since my hair is so thin and fine, it needs protein treatments to give it "strength" and "body". After many expensive treatments I noticed that my hair was going from bad to worse. I had ordered a bottle of Giovanni from iherb.com since it was one of the best-selling conditioners, and was AMAZED at the complete turnaround in the condition of my hair.

I like the carrots one, but it has a cone that my hair eventually doesn't like and I haven't tried the cucumber one.

Giovanni's Tea Tree Triple Treat (http://www.giovannicosmetics.net/item.asp?prodtype=HAIR%20CARE&category=ORGANIC&model=CONDITIONER&item=TTC-8) for me. The Deep Conditioner was too rich for my baby-fine hair.
It's been harder to find lately (in Canada), but then I went to Homesense and they had a huge bottle of it with a pump top for $15! I'm thinking about going back and buying up all the other bottles too. :cheese:
I wash with it daily, and shampoo with this fantastic bar (http://www.natural.ca/products/shampoo-bar-esp)about every 5 days.

I second (or third or fourth at this point lol) Giovanni Deep Condition, although I went through it too fast for CO.
Lately I've been using Pantene Nature Fusion Moisture Balance and am amazed at how silky my hair is right now. It's been a long time since I've used a product that worked so well for my hair. I CO with it and it works great.
Paul Mitchell The Detangler also left my hair very soft.

I love Kiss My Face conditioners! I think the most moisturizing is Miss Treated, but all of them make my hair soft and smooth. I think this brand is becoming more readily available in most stores, but I always order it online at IHerb for the best price.

I love the GVP (Sally's brand) Conditioning Balm, which is a knock off of Biolage Conditioning Balm.
It works wonders! My daughter's hair is almost TB length, and I used to have to really 'cone her hair up to get it detangled. Now, ALL I use on her hair is this Conditioning Balm and I don't even need detangling spray or anything. It is really a wonder-product!!

I used Giovanni's conditioners for a while (I found them on yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk), but much as I liked what they did for my hair, I couldn't afford them with the amount I needed - £8 for 250ml, plus postage, is a bit steep.
I went searching for conditioner than wouldn't break the bank and found Pure Nuff Stuff (http://www.purenuffstuff.co.uk/hair.html). They're still not as cheap as the typical store-bought stuff, but they're the cheapest I've found with an ingredients list that doesn't make me cringe. And oh my - the first time I used their conditioner, my hair felt softer than it ever has. :crush: Also, for a quid more you can pick a custom scent, which is the option I normally go for since I'm picky with smells.
