View Full Version : Should I tie my hands to my back?

Hi!
when I let my hair down, i feel the constant urge to brush it
i mean, i brush it like, almost all the time, because it just looks like sooo much nicer.
So give it to me straight: how bad is constant brushing?

I also have another question :D
I've been searching almost my entire life for a split end. I've NEVER found one. I know what they look like. Do I have mutant hair or am I really that blind?

Thanks for answering my vague questions! :cheese:

I don't get split ends either. I've had one or two now and then so I know what they look like, but they are definitely the exception rather than the rule.

Congratulations on having good, strong hair!

And no, I would not recommend tying your hands behind my back. Though it's tempting for me to do so. I have a problem with picking at stuff!

What comes to mind is: maybe you could just wear your hair up instead to avoid the temptation of fiddling with it?

However, I know some people are blessed with tangle-free, silky hair that they are able to wear down constantly, and they just don't like wearing it up. If that's the way with you, then either just tell yourself sternly not to play with your hair so much, or else stop worrying about it. If you don't have any split ends, maybe your constant brushing isn't doing any harm. :)

Haha you made me laugh "I know what they look like"!!!! :rollin: Haha :)
You're just born lucky and I'm very jealous.
As for the constant brushing, if you find a tight enough rope or some kind of cure, let me know ;)

Mutant hair:D For sure. In the most positive meaning. There was a time when I had to look for non-split end:D And I didn't found one.

Maybe it's because brushing? You distribut oils well. And if you use a BBB... I don't think it can cause damage. So if you can't stop... brush. I know I wanted to brush ALL THE TIME too when I had my hair down, so that's one of the reasons why I wear it up now.
But, maybe, try tu fingercomb it instead of brushing, if you are afraid of damage.

I comb my hair every time I let it down. :)
If you don't get splits from brushing just do it. You don't have splits, so you are very lucky. :D

I don't constantly brush (in fact, I do it rarely), and I get split ends all the time. Want me to send you some?

I think your listed length of 14 inches might have something to do with why you don't have split ends. Revisit this when you've gotten to waist....

Tying your hands behind your back will only work to a point. Eventually your hair will reach them. :D

My hair is hip length now and is often tailbone length. Minimum length 36 inches.

No split ends then either.

I'm a trimmer. That's my secret.

I used to have split ends before I cut out damage and began trimming while growing. When my hair was later at 29 inches, I still had no split ends.

While my hair is currently shorter, I still have no splits.

I do not brush frequently though. I only brush a little bit after I put in a couple of drops of oil before making my bedtime bun, and also just before a shower, in order to reduce the hairs that get trapped in the drain.

I suggest that at your current length, while your hair is still so healthy, that you try a seamless wide-toothed comb, like a Heavenly Harvest bone comb, instead of brushing.

While you have no splits now, it's never too early to change to healthier hair habits. The damage that you prevent now will show up years from now as healthier longer hair.

Some people are lucky enough to have hair which doesn't split much at any length. As your hair gets longer you'll find out whether you're one of those people or whether you get more splits as your hair lengthens. I had no splits at 14". I have many splits now. I have no idea whether I would have fewer splits at my current length if I'd babied my ends more when my hair was shorter. I'm not planning to cut it and regrow just to find this out, so I'll probably never know. I do know that constant brushing now would cause more splits and breakage, so I don't. I also wear my hair up most of the time, do S&D, use conditioner, oil my ends, avoid unnecessary fiddling with my hair, never blowdry, and still the split ends keep coming. Trimming doesn't really get rid of them either--it just makes my hair shorter. I'm quite jealous of those with waist and longer hair who have no split ends.

I tried S&Ding the other day, but I couldn't find any actual split ends. My very ends are crinkly, but I'm hoping that in another 2-4 months I'll be able to cut that off and have all good hair. I think since I started CO-washing and stopped brushing out my tangles, I stopped doing most of the damage to my hair.

What I ended up S&Ding was knots. I hate those suckers!!! I think little elves break into my house and put knots in the last 1-2 inches of my hair while I sleep.

Since you have no spilts brushing does not seem to be harming your hair.
I agree about re-visiting and keeping an eye out as you grow.
But if it is working for you then go for it:)

Wish it worked for me. Unfortunately, my hemline is not where I get my splits. They seem to be higher up, probably where the little knot was that snagged my comb. They also tend to concentrate on the hair that falls near my face, which seems to be extra-fine.

That's why I don't comb. When I still used a comb, I would get more splits.

Now it's only a boar bristle brush for me. It's much less damaging to my hair.

Cool you don't get splits! I find one or two rarely and they get the snip! My hair is up most of the day because it has to be when at work, but i do find im playing with it if i have it down in the evening. I most typically have it in a pony or claw clip though and pay it little attention:D but as it gets longer i do want to wear it down more, at the moment i just feel its in a flicky stage and my front shortest layers were being vey annoying today, headband wasn't keeping them contained:eek: so lots of head jerking and upwards blowing to get stray layers away from my eyes and nose.

I wish I didn't get split ends, but I do.

I have a BBB and an evil "spawn of satan" ball-tipped paddle brush that I use very carefully. I too love the feeling of brushing my hair, but I have noticed now that I am at tailbone length that the older the hair is, the more prone it is to mechanical damage.

At 14 inches you've still got relatively "young" hair. My ends are 10+ years old ;). So I try to limit the brushing to getting the job done re: detangling/smoothing, and leave it at that.
