View Full Version : Product for beachy waves?

I really want "beachy" waves for the summer. I sometimes like braid waves (sometimes they are too wavy) and love bun waves. If I scrunch my hair nd let it air dry, it will hold a bit of wave. I don't really have product that I like to help hold the waves. I tried Aussie Leave-in Conditioner + Mousse and that was OK. I wanted to try Sally Hershberger's Mineral Spray, but it apparently contains alcohol.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
(Sorry if I missed an existing thread on this topic.)
EDIT: Ok, so there is this http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=47100&highlight=beach+waves&page=3 thread (to which I actually contributed, lol), but there is no mention of a good, gentle PRODUCT to use. Grr.

Hey Kristen. I styled my hair wavy for my birthday which just passed a few weeks ago. You can check out my thread here : http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=48758

Spray gels work very well to hold a beachy wave and texture in hair that is more straight by nature.

Try making the braid *very* loose so that there's almost no tension on the braid. You can play with that quite a bit to vary those waves.

I find that fishtail braids work well for beach waves but also Tigi Bed Head foxy curls cream - it goes a bit crunchy but holds them well and combs out easy. And it smells like skittles!! I put it into slighty damp hair and scrunch a bit and leave to dry naturally but my hair is naturally wavy.

I can't live without Garnier Fructis Surf Hair texture paste!!! And it's inexpensive too...I pick it up at Wal-mart for $3 and the 5oz jar lasts a long time. It does have a wax base, but washes out easily with CO or regular shampoo. Oh, and this does not make my hair look oily. I just rub some on my hands as if I'm using hand lotion and then scrunch my hair in different sections. I LOVE THIS LOOK! :D

I was kinda wanting waves like Amanda Seyfried's in Dear John. If you haven't seen the movie, here are a couple of pics:

I could probably get these waves pretty easily with one or two sleep braids, but the waves either: 1) will not hold, or; 2) will become frizzy. I usually oil my hair lightly before braiding (which obviously does nothing for waves) and have also used aloe (which makes my hair very soft, but does not help to hold waves).
I guess I just need a good suggestion for a mousse, gel, or styling lotion that will help hold my waves.

I've heard that a salt water mix works! You just simply spray it in your hair and scrunch. I'm not sure of the concentrations though. A bit of googeling may help here. It makes sense that you can get beachy waves by mimicking what your hair is exposed to at the beach :D

I've had good results with Jessicurl Gelebration Spray. I spray a little onto my palm, rub my hands together and scrunch it into my hair. It doesn't have cones, but it is on the pricey side.

What about Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray? It looks to be a bit expensive, but here are the ingredients:
Ingredients
Water (Aqua), Magnesium Sulfate, Macrocystic Pyrifera Extract (Kelp), Algae Extract (Algae), Isoceteth 20, Potassium Sorbate, Propylene Glycol, Citric Acid, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance (Parfum)
Are any of these damaging/drying? I tried a loose braid with mousse last night and my hair felt sticky. It was a bit better after combing it with a wide-tooth comb, but the waves wouldn't hold all day or even for a few hours.
