Unfortunately, we're still working on getting them back to a functioning, READABLE level, but until then, you can at least log in and review old private messages and profiles. Once I'm finished working on these boards, I'll resume efforts to reclaim the archived information.

Thank you so much, Stephanie for all your hard work, and for starting this board to begin with!
In the past year not only have my hair, skin, and overall appearance dramatically improved, I have found a number of friends here. You've created a wonderful community, from which there has been immeasurable benefit to literally thousands of people.
TLHC may've begun as a hair board for folks to chat about long hair, but it's become a body of diplomacy and compassion to many. You've made an incredible mark on the world.
Bless you.

Bump.
If you go to that link and log in, then scroll alllllllll the way down to the bottom and click Archive you can see some of the posts. They are not very easy to peruse, but if you have a word to search for, you can hit Ctrl+F and search for it. AND most of the stuff from a few weeks before the crash are still not accessible, but older stuff is.
Just FYI, the only blogs I could see were the ones that hadn't been updated in a long time, and then only the public journals (no private journals).

Hello!!!
I can not tell you how happy I am to see the site back up. :cheese:
I have a question about the archived threads.
Are you reposting them all as soon as you get them working or are you just keeping the in an archive for us to view?
I was wondering because I feel strongly about one thread in particular, the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Awareness thread.
I mainly wanted to express how happy I am that the site is back up. :D
And wow... did we have that many smilies before?!?!?!

I'm not sure if this has been posted in this thread before, but if you have the link to a thread/post on the old LHC and change the 'forum' part at the beginning to 'archive', if it's a public thread it'll open up.
ETA: I stumbled upon the fact that this includes public journals. http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=1 (I was typing in random numbers at the end to see which threads I could come up with, and so I thought why not the number 1? And it's Steph's public journal)
ETA2: And if anyone's interested, this http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=78700 is the last thread posted on the old LHC.

Carolyn, did you try just typing in archive in your old private journal link? I am able to see the X day challenge thread, which was in the restricted forums. If you have any old download of your journal, the header information is right there.
iris
March 29th, 2008, 11:29 AM
Seems to me it's just that certain subforums have been imported already, while others haven't. The archive for the herbal subforum doesn't work yet, for instance, even though it's public. It's not that all the public things are working and the private things are not.
When I try to access my private journal, it tells me I'm not logged in (won't allow me to log in, either).
But it's very encouraging that things are being imported! :rockerdud
ETA: I was wrong - some threads in the herbal hairforum can be accessed. Haven't figured out yet what the system is ;-)

Carolyn, I imagine that since the old forum software isn't currently running (as in, the threads that ARE viewable, are viewable only in a text form rather than editable and with the full forum infrastructure around them), perhaps the ability to do something like that doesn't currently exist? Fingers crossed for private journal access again in the future, though.

Steph,
Thanks for making the archive work!
There's one bug:the buttons below the Google site search let you choose between searching the "Web" and "forums.longhaircommunity.com." So clicking the second button will execute the search on the NEW forum instead of the archives.
Could you change that second button to "archive.longhaircommunity.com"?
Thanks again!

Can anyone tell me if the private journals are being worked on, to be available in Archive?
Siamese
April 9th, 2008, 05:26 AM
Great to see the Private Journals are now there along with Public Journals in the archives. Something must be on the move.
I have a query about the Public Journals though and hoping a mod can help me.
I've been working my way through the Public Journals for the past week and documenting which ones are available and which ones are not. It's still unstable though. Sometimes it permits access and other days it doesn't so it's slow going. Right now, I'm locked out from journal 950 onward but expect that to change again and it does, from moment to moment.
In the meantime...
Public Journals 1-250 displayed only 4 journal titles that were not available (error message).
251-500 displayed only 11 journal titles that were not available (error message).
501-750 displayed only 9 journal titles that were not available (error message).
751- 950 displayed only 22 journal titles that were not available (error message).
I really do appreciate we are all busy and this is not a priority per se, however I'm still feeling like I'm limbo - as though someone walked away with the key to a room that my history was stored in, and I have no idea what direction they headed in with it. I need a compass and that key back!
Would it help to know which of the Public Journals are not currently accessible in the list of 950 I've collated thus far? At this time there are 46 journals with error messages out of the 950 I've opened. Of course, mine is one of them.
Any further information would be most gratefully received.

The archives seem to work differently for different people. I'm able to read all the archive links I've posted, but have had other members say the links don't work for them. As regards the private journals, for me, none of the private boards show when I access the archives, whether I log in or not. As far as I know, even those who are able to see the Private Journal forum, are not able to see individual journals.

The same is true for the threads in the regular forums - the henna removal thread, for instance, and the honey thread, both huge threads, both give the database error, while the threads right before and after them do work.
I guess it'll get fixed when and if it gets fixed . There has been no reply to questions in this thread, not from mods or from admins, - I read that as 'it'll get fixed when and if it gets fixed'. It's probably a lot of work to fix it.

Thank you physicschick, it is nice to hear from a mod, doesn't matter that it's 'I don't know, either' :D. It does feel good to hear that it's a major goal.
About the technical issues involved, and to offer some perspective - the email in the place where I work crashed mid March, similar type of problem, 'corrupt database', and they've been working on restoring the data for a month now. The data involved there consists of the email of 2000 people for only 4 days; they're working on it with three people, around the clock, and almost a month later they still haven't fixed it.
So, I don't know what the restoring process involves exactly, either (in my scariest dreams it involves fixing stuff by hand), but I can say that if three people who get paid to do this, can't fix within a month an amount of data that is probably less than all of LHC, that it would be way off the mark to be impatient about LHC data restoration, which is done by volunteers from the kindness of their hearts.

For anyone having login problems, any time you switch between the active forums and the archive forums you must to intentionally "Log Out" of one site before you can login to the other.
We're looking into the possibility of integrating the two better in the future, but for now that's the best we can do.

Another thing I forgot to mention was this:
Keep in mind that any saved links (e.g. in posts or signatures, etc.) that you encounter on the archive forums are going to point to url starting with "forums.longhaircommunity.com". I think the idea is that they will be permanently available. We hope that in the future they will be better integrated with the current site (so that we don't have to do the logout/login/logout thing). However, if there's some information you've been dying to access, it's always safest to download it now just in case there are future database glitches.

I just thought I'd mention that what I did, instead of using the 'download this thread' feature', I saved each page of the thread, using the File:Save Page As option on my browser, and saved them as 'web page complete'. I just made up file names listing the page number, ending in .htm the way the software seemed to prefer.
I've wound up with a) a group of documents, named as I selected, and b) a group of folders, apparently containing other information concerning the files. To access, I click the document.
I just mention it, because I found the 'text only' option pretty hard to read.

For anyone having login problems, any time you switch between the active forums and the archive forums you must to intentionally "Log Out" of one site before you can login to the other.
We're looking into the possibility of integrating the two better in the future, but for now that's the best we can do.

You can set your preferences to increase the number of posts per page. I keep mine set at forty, the maximum, just to minimize the amount of clicking I need to do. Set like that, my old journal was only eight pages long. Big pages, but still, easier to view than otherwise.

That hasn't been asked yet, so I'm glad you brought it up. Currently we have registrations disabled at the archive site. Even if you did register, you would forever remain at "newbie" status and you would never get access to the full site with restricted areas because your post count over there will never increase.
(Side note: A few folks whose post counts had already made 100 posts but were waiting for their 60 day time criteria to be met have been promoted and now have full access over there.)
We are currently investigating the feasibility of importing the old information and merging the two forum databases back together. In the meantime, the two sites will always be out of sync with regards to accounts and levels of access.
We will post more information as it becomes available, but right now I don't have a good answer for you.

I think I have a unique problem. When we still had the Private sections, the moderators had disabled me from being able to see them, as per WritingMum's request. Now that that restriction is gone, my mother has looked at the sections that used to be private and said that they're fine. Is there any way to enable my being able to see private journals (and such) on the archives? There is a journal that I want to retrieve for a friend of mine who doesn't come around as often.

That happened to me many times, and didn't seem to be related to whether I had logged off here or not.
What I finally did was to open the archive it and bookmark it. Then, I logged out of here AND closed the browser just to be sure (as well as the browser with the archived site).

Thanks for restoring the archives, Mods!
Unfortunately, I can't get in to the private area on old LHC. I've tried the log-out from the new, log-in to the old process. Problem is, the site simply will not accept my password. It tells me time and time again that I haven't entered it right. I did the routine for a lost password, even though I knew I was entering the correct one. Neither the old nor the one emailed by the server will let me enter.
Plus, the password to which I changed, during my first attempt, works on the new LHC and the one sent me by the server after that doesn't! Are you thoroughly confused now?
So I enter my username. Then I enter my password. Then I hit Log In and the password disappears from the little box. Then I get the message that I'm invalid. I've tried this with both Firefox and IE. Maybe I need to clear the cache? Clear some cookies? Eat a few chocolate chip cookies? Pray to the cybergoddess? (Although, the screen tells me that cookies have been cleared.)
Any ideas? Thanks!

OK, now that I understand how to change the date on posting to my new blog, I am just wondering what most people have done to move their archived journal over to their new blog.
* Are you moving your entries from your archived journal into your new blog, or are you just keeping a downloaded copy on your PC?
* If you are moving your old journal entries into your new blog, are you doing that for each single entry, or are you moving them over in a bulk entry? I've noticed the space limitation per entry, so wondering what the best approach is.
* Started my blog but want to delete the first entries since I goofed on them. I deleted them myself, but there is still the entry name and that I deleted it there. If I contact a mod, can they blow away my blog goofs?

Only you (and the mods) should be able to see that you have deleted entries. Other members can't see it, so don't worry about it.

The archives and the current boards are not very well integrated yet, so this may be the case at the moment. I will check. In the future, we hope that the two will work together more seamlessly.

I'm actually having trouble too - originally, I could log out here and log in there and access all of the information including the "private/members only" areas, but now I cannot access even the main boards. If I go to the forums page, all of the topics are available, but once I click on them I receive an error message. I assume there must be something "up" with the database? I can't really think of anything I need over there, I've already grabbed my journal history (out of private journal section) but it is nice to access for old information. Any ideas?

Also, I can never look at any blogs. It will just send me to a page that says I don't have permission to post in that area.

That's because there is a problem with database. When it gets fixed, it'll be up again. Unfortunately, there's no good permanent fix for what ails it, so it need periodic fixing.
Also, I can never look at any blogs. It will just send me to a page that says I don't have permission to post in that area.
And that's because with only 22 posts, you don't have permission to view the blogs yet. When you reach 25+ posts, you will.

I'd like to request that my private journal on the old board be deleted. The title was Darian Moone's Hair Journal.
I was able to access it today and downloaded it, so all that's needed is a deletion.
I have to make a horrid confession now...I started deleting posts on it myself...THEN I noticed on this thread that I wasn't supposed to do anything like that on the old boards. :o Begging forgiveness!!!!! :cheese: All I can say *uses her most pitiful voice* is that I was reading a different thread than this one and didn't mean to mess up anything. (Please don't let me be the one to "break the board"! )
I'm sorry if I messed anything up. Thanks in advance for deleting my old private journal. :flower:
Adding another request if it's possible: Could my old photo journal be removed also? It was called Darian Moone's Photo Journal. I was able to access it today also, but I SWEAR I didn't do a thing to it.

I'm linking to my old journal in my signature, and when I click on the link, it's not letting me in. Will linking that way not work? I made sure that I was signed out of the new LHC when I clicked the link and it still didn't work. Just trying to see if it works that way, or if I should remove that link altogether. I've already downloaded my old journal.

I thought I read that if you did not have 100posts/60+ days and access to the private boards BEFORE the site crashed, you won't have it now (over there) as the system will not sinc up the access you've gained. Please correct me if I'm wrong...

You're correct - you won't have the upgraded access automatically. However, an admin can go manually fix your account in the archives to match your current level of access here on the main site.

If this isn't appropriate to ask on this thread, please let me know.
I'm wondering if one of you old-LHC members would be willing to do me a favor. I found the old Chagrin Valley Soap and Shampoo Bar thread in the archive a week or two ago and was slowly reading through it. I apparently failed to add it to my favorites, and the power went out the other day and I lost what I had open.
The problem is that since I wasn't a member of the old LHC, I didn't find this thread using the search function, but by reading through 100+ pages of archived threads. I don't have the ability to search the "old" forums, and I am wondering if someone who *does* have that ability would be willing to post a link to the thread I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance!
Edited to add: I'm pretty sure from reading through this thread that I can't get an account on the archived forum if I wasn't already a member at the time it crashed, so my question is based on that assumption. If I am incorrect and there is some way for me to gain "search" access on the old board, please let me know. :)

Well yes, so can tresses, apparently, but in my version of firefox, I can't.
And it'll take more than this to get me to switch to explorer ;-P. (M$ would have to start making a version for mac os for a start... the last explorer version they have for mac is 5, last time I looked, - which has no tabs and is generally hopeless).

Hello, I just came back after a few months away (last visit was December 13th 2007) and apparently there was a major crash and loss of data in the interim. Kudos to the folks who got the archives restored!
That leaves me with some questions (sorry if this isn't the designated thread for this but I am a bit disoriented due to the changes):
1) Even though they no longer exist on the new forum, will my previous 53 posts count toward the total of 100? I hope so!
2) Can I get my title of "Long Hair Devotee" restored on the new forum, or do I have to earn it all over again?
3) Do we now have blogs AND journals, or have the journal threads been replaced with blogs now? It took some doing, but I was finally able to log into the archives forum and find my old journal... and I suppose I could copy and paste the old entries into the new interface to rebuild it here... if that's the best way.
4) Do blog posts count toward our total post count the way journal posts used to?
5) Is there still a private journal option (after 100 posts and sufficient time) or is that gone? And if we still have that option, does it work with blogs, or only with a journal thread like we had on the old forum? I really want to have the option of a private journal.
Thanks for any and all help in getting re-oriented here. I've missed this forum and look forward to participating enthusiastically once again. Off to wash my hair, will check back for replies. :D

I don't think we have those titles here anymore. But once you reach 1000 posts you can change your title at will.
3) Do we now have blogs AND journals, or have the journal threads been replaced with blogs now? The blogs replace the old journals. They are a bit different, and may need some getting used to.
Some of the main differences: you can add tags/labels to your blog entries, you can allow people to leave comments, you can write a blog description, which I think is a really good substitute for the common "intro" many members had in their first journal post.
I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of anything else right now.
4) Do blog posts count toward our total post count the way journal posts used to?
No, they don't. They're separate.
5) Is there still a private journal option (after 100 posts and sufficient time) or is that gone? And if we still have that option, does it work with blogs, or only with a journal thread like we had on the old forum? I really want to have the option of a private journal.
You have two options for your blog:
1) public will allow anyone with 25+ posts to see it, and
2) friends only will only allow your friends and contacts (I'm sure you'll have a lot of questions about those too , I think there is a thread here somewhere about that, though) to see your blog.
You cannot, unfortunately, set some entries as public and some as friends only, you have to choose for your whole blog.
HTH!
PS: Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. And I hope it was ok to reply in this thread. :o

I found my blog setup controls and have created a blog with a few categories, etc. It's a nicer option than the old journal thread, overall, especially with the categories feature. Nice enhancement!
Overall I am impressed with the improvements in the forum. I still haven't looked around the topics much yet, but hope to do that later today.
I've now restored my profile and everything seems to be up and running again. It's nice to be back!

Welcome back, Vanille! I'm glad you're enjoying the new blog features. I really love that aspect of the upgrade. One more thing... Could you please translate the Latin in your sig? (You can either put the translation next to the Latin, or make the phrase a hyperlink to a page containing the translation.) Thanks!
Once you get to 1000 posts and 1 year's membership, you can choose a custom title. Options abound, including Latin. :) [ETA: Just Isabel, you were super informative. This is the only piece of information missing (the 1 year requirement); everything else was spot on. Thanks!]

Well, now I'm confused. The greeting I get when I come to the site talks about a shorter time period...
Some of these features are restricted to our dedicated members (>100 posts + >30 days of membership), so if you've been lurking, please come on out and say hi so you can use the forums to their full advantage!
So are you saying that we get even more privileges at the 1000+ posts and one year+ membership mark?
Also... why would Latin in a sig be a problem for people? I thought everyone was familiar with the old "Knowledge is power" saying, and it's fitting for such an informative community as this one. So I'm just wondering why you want it translated? Is there a fear that someone will put something rude in a foreign language in their sig? Just wondering why you requested that.
Thanks again for all the helpful answers, I look forward to learning more about what's what so I can get all settled in comfortably. :)

Yes, there is more! See this thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=1658) for details. (By the way, the 100 posts/30 days in the site heading is a typo. It's actually 100/60 for one level of privileges.)

It's because English is the one language that everyone here knows. LHC is very international, and people from, for example, non-Western backgrounds might have zero exposure to Latin during their schooling. Also, we've recently found with Latin that even in the US what one person thinks is obvious and covered in every high school, another person might not have ever seen before. We just want to make sure everyone can understand the discussions here. Thanks for your willingness to translate. We appreciate it. :flowers:

Hi Morguebabe, in order to access the archives, you will first have to log out of the "new" LHC, then you can log into the archives. You should be able to see the old forums and access your inbox, although you cannot send/receive new PMs in the archives.

I know it is a long shot, but is it possible to recover my Journal- Phoenix Rising and/or album Faeflame’s Fotos? It would kinda .be nice to have those pics, etc. for inspiration as I start the journey to classic again.
Thank you!
