I was at a picnic yesterday and covered myself in protection from the sun. But I forgot my scalp :( And it's really badly burned... Is there anything I can put on my scalp to help it heal or to stop it hurting?
This wouldn't impact on hair growth, would it? I'm a slow grower and I'm a little worried.

I have successfully rubbed shea butter into my scalp after a sunburn. I did not have the feeling it had any impact on my growth, however my hair felt a bit dry and brittle for a few days. Nothing you cannot sort out with a deep treatment. Good luck!

And excuse for a deep treatment. I like it :)

I have used aloe gel on my scalp when I have been sunburned. I never noticed any changes in my hair.....just really large dandruff flakes when it peeled. :(

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago on a picnic. Totally forgot my head would burn. Had a red hair line :S

Lots of Aloe gel, and oil helps me. You could mix it with a bit of cool honey and have more benefits!

I'd suggest going light on shampooing for the next few days, then do a scalp wash with massage to help. The massage will help the dead skin fall away, and none of those will hurt your hair and will probably help it more!

Sun burns can make hair shed or break off, but they won't destroy your hair if rare. Just be gentle with your hair.

Seconding going light on shampoo. The last thing you need now is to dry the damaged skin out

I heard advice once about spraying strong, cold green tea on every 15 minutes until it heals but I have actually never tried it myself

I've put coconut oil on my scalp when this has happened. And you do get HUGE flakes of skin falling off (or at least I did) -- I mean, pieces of skin with 7 or so perforations from hair follicles all coming off in one piece that I had to slide down out of my hair. Ick, I hope that description wasn't too gross.

Also, I'd suggest parting your hair somewhere else for the meantime to give that patch of skin a break. And be gentle while combing.

Hope it gets better soon! :flower:

I noticed that my scalp color is bir dark than other area.
which the part line the crown. I wonder if it's sun burn???
I felt pain around the area after I walked under the sun.
I don't think my part is not wider than before but I never noticed it before and never felt burning scalp.
now I am wondering if my top of crown getting thin hair:confused:
I am thinking to get some sun block spray for head.

I use the same sunscreen I use on my body. I dab a bit on my finger and rub it along the part until I know the whole part is covered (have to remember the tips of the ears too). I figure I will be showering later anyway so I will wash it out then.

Thanks for the advice peeps. I'm waiting until Tuesday and then I'll DC followed by CO.

I like the idea of sunblock for my hair/scalp but the only ones I've seen have cones in them :(

If I'm staying outside in the sun for longer periods I use a hat or a buff/scarf to protect my scalp.
I burned the top of my ears and my scalp once and that was awful. It hurt like hell and then I shed big flakes of skin from my part. EEEW!

I did this to myself last summer, while I was washing with baking soda and vinegar. Vinegar will take the heat right out of a sunburn. It'll still be red but it won't be painful anymore. It works great for all burns too, not just sunburns.
I discovered that by accident and had forgotten all about it!!

I would do the vinegar rinse to take the fire out, then aloe gel & honey to help heal (and they're great for your hair as well). Then you'll definitely want to find a stylish hat or scarf to make part of your sunscreen routine :)

Ouch!

Bare Escentuals makes a mineral powder sunscreen that I've used on my part the past couple of years. I keep some in my purse for all the times I get stuck somewhere unexpectedly without a hat.

I've heard good things about applying either vinegar or tea to a sunburn and just letting it dry on there. Both would be sufficiently hair-friendly, though tea might stain light-colored hair for a while.

I've found that the sun goes through my pulled-back hair enough to burn my scalp, not just my part. I opt for wearing a hat rather than attempting to put sunscreen on my head. (Especially after DH's skin cancer on his scalp....)

Hmm well my Pharmacist dad swears by Noxema (cold creme) for burns but it might be bad on the head. We never use aloe vera gel. The issue with Noxema is the color, plus I'm pretty sure it's got mineral oil or parafin in it. But if you've got some lying around you might want to try it out. If your ears got burned it might also give them some relief. GL!
