Hey everyone! Hoping for some really good ideas here since I seem to be starting on an old problem from my youth. My fine and oily hair is now once again starting to tangle after a shower. I use a non sulfate poo and no conditioner since most conditioners just weigh my hair down. So what is your favorite detangling solution? I'd really like to hear from the fine and oily haired folks especially ^_^

I would really suggest experimenting with conditioners to find the right one. Since I found some good ones I have not needed leave ins. That being said, my hair is uber tangly and used to need a good leave in. My hair hates creams, so I found a "heat protection" spray that was a wonderful when used instead as a leave in and I will forever love it. It's the Nexxus Heat Protexx, I sprayed it on wet hair and slept on my wet hair overnight. It smells great in my opinion and gave amazing detangling. There is a $5 coupon for nexxus products at rite aid this week, it's typically $13 so if you want to try it that might be a good time.

You could try diluting a very light conditioner like VO5 and detangling when your hair is in the shower, then rinsing it out well. When your hair is longer, you can put conditioner everywhere but your scalp to avoid that problem. Or a teensy bit of a coney serum.

I have fine but oily hair, but it needs to be weighed down a lot when it's longish.(and short as well.)

TThanks for your tips, x0h bother and Fractalsofhair! I don't have the money right now to try the Nexxus, but I did have 1/2 bottle of condi sitting around I wasn't using and filled the bottle with water. It was still a little too heavy for my hair, but then again it was only 1/2 condi to 1/2 water, so maybe after diluting it to 1/4 condi it will work a little better ^_^ I'm going on a trip soon and took a smaller bottle of the 1/2 mixture and added enough water to make it into the 1/4, so we'll see how that goes.

Anyone else have a favorite detangler they like to use? I've seen other sites toting about aloe juice with water, does anyone use this method? How about commercial detanglers?

I mix a detangler for my daughters: distilled water with a bit of conditioner and some drops of oil (camellia oil, almond oil, grape seed oil). Mix it well, spray it on, detangle carefully with fingers and horn comb. the tangle teezer is also very good.

I have super fine hair, but I don't think I can be of much help. My hair only tangled when it was damaged from dye, and even then it didn't tangle much. With the henna/cassia as my only color now, it barely tangles at all. I just run a wide tooth bone comb through it and call it good.

Hmm, but I do CO - have you tried that? It took me a while when I first started (which was pre-LHC) to find a conditioner my hair liked (had to figure out the no-cone thing by trial and error), but I've found the Suave Naturals and the VO5 cheapies are the ones my hair likes best. Good luck in your search! :)

I have hard water and when my fine hair starts to tangle, it usually means I need to clarify. I use either a clarifying shampoo or an SLS one left a bit longer. Then I condition it a lot.

If you find that conditioners weigh your hair down (and I understand that one, now I have enough length to just condition the length, but before the whole lot got conditioned and the result wasn't so good) you might want to try what I do for my daughter. I put the conditioner on first, then I rince it all out and shampoo . It seems to give conditioning effects without the heavy, greasy problems.
You may want to try oils as prewash teatments too.

2nd Masara's advice to clarify.
My hair is all knots and no conditioner or anything will help until I've clarified the ends really well.

After clarifying and deep conditioning, I've found that a *tiny* bit of jojoba oil is great for keeping tangles away - and my hair is fine and curly which = tangle city. I usually put a little all over, but since your hair is fine and oily I'd only put it on the very ends.

Hope that helps. :flower:

I also recommend clarifying, and my go-to light weight detangler is a mix of aloe vera gel (the clear kind) with water, varying the ratio depending on how heavy you want it to be. I use about acup of water and 20 squirts of aloe from my Fruit of The Earth 20 oz aloe container. It also works to tamp down frizz. :)

Pantene conditioner and Biolage Conditioning Balm work wonders for me. The latter I use in the shower and as a leave-in when my hair gets snarly.

Detangle It from Karpati, no cones. It doesn't weigh my hair down and it works great :) It even gives some thickness.
