View Full Version : ...Bad hair decision today.

I only have two more days of Cosmetology school left, so my teacher basically let me and my classmates do whatever we want. She brought out some colored hair extensions (something we've never really worked with, she showed us how today), and of course we were very interested. I wasn't going to get any put in my hair, but my friend talked me into letting her put them in my hair I thought "why not..it will be fun for now and I can get them out tonight." Wrong move! They are applied with what looks like a hot glue gun (I can see how this is damaging, ugh). These are now glued onto chunks of my hair, and the glue has hardened around my hair shafts by the roots with the extensions to keep them from falling out. It feels like I have little rocks in my head. Luckily I only let my friend put 5 of them in, but I'm kind of regretting this. I have to crack open the hardened beads of glue with pliers, and then somehow get all of the gunk out of my hair. :undecided Anyone else wanna share bad hair decisions? Feel free. Tips to get this yucky glue out are very welcome. Lol.

Just curious... did you use weave glue? (There is special glue to attach extensions.) Or did you use... err... regular glue?

It's a glue meant for extensions, I'm not sure exactly what kind though if there are different types.

Maybe your teacher can tell you if there is something to remove the glue, made to take extensions out? Hope you can get it out without too much damage!

I'm definitely going to ask tomorrow. I mentioned it today, and I know she said to crack the glue with pliers..but there are still little chunks of glue lying around that are gonna be difficult to remove. thank you!

I'd leave them alone. I would guess that the glue will slowly start to degrade, especially through washings and the colored bits will fall out over time. Seems like taking them out would be much more damaging than letting them come out on their own.

I'm no specialist here, but will the glue "wear off"? Perhaps it will eventually loose it's strength and fall off of your hair, with little to no damage?

If it was glue intend for use on human hair, then it SHOULD be safe and not very damaging. . . right?!

Well I'd probably just wait for the glue to unattach on its own time but...

If you really want to get them off now, an acetone nail polish remover *might* work. I don't know what it would do for your hair... but acetone cuts through glue no problem. And you use it on nails... which is keratin just like hair. So I don't know. Just a thought. I've never heard of this being done though, so take this idea with caution.

I had a little google and there are actually Bonding Glue removers. Also, some of the advice suggested trying Baby Oil, let it sit on for an hour.

Nail polish remover will apparently do it too. It's not great for the hair, but then it's not that bad, because I had to use it once to get globs of glue off my head following an EEG and my hair survived it ok.

I would rather wait for the glue to fall out on its own that put nail polish remover on my hair, I think.

I would work with some oils like EVOO or cocunut oil. You may be able to soften the glue, or at least make the hair slippery enough for the glue to slide out.

And by the way, please remember that just about everyone here has made bad hair decisions at one time or another. Some of us are still paying years later for our bad decisions. :o

However you decide to get rid of it, do be gentle, and perhaps it won't be a big deal at all, in the end. :blossom:

Maybe try holding a blowdryer to the glued parts? (Don't burn yourself, obviously.) I know that when I had extensions they told me not to use any heat because it would dissolve the glue. Sorry you are in this predicament!

*Please* don't take this as a condemnation of your judgment, okay? Because it's not directed at you at all, but...

"Crack it with pliers"?!?! What in the name of all that's holy is anything that needs pliers to remove it doing on anyone's head?? shudder:

I'm so glad to hear that another longhair is joining the ranks of the hairstyling community! The more of us there are in that field, the fewer of us will suffer at the hands of stylists who don't "get" long hair care. And just think, what a useful crash course in extensions this is for you... ;)

I'm sorry about your crisis, and hope it resolves quickly and with minimal damage.

From what I've heard of weave glue, there's always some sort of solution to help degrade the glue. I've never done it myself, but I've heard a lot of people soak their hair through with conditioner and slowly pull out the extension...

again, I have no kind of idea what glue you used, just offering my two cents.

I second FrannyG's olive oil suggestion.

Because:
a) I softened and removed some bonded extensions that way once (not sure if they were the exact same type of bonds but can't hurt to try)
b) It is at least kinder to the hair than pliers

Good luck!

I feel for you and your hair! We all make crazy hair decisions every now and then...thank god the stuff grows :).

Anyways...I was getting my last round ever of highlights back in March and watching a girl get her extensions removed. The stylist was squirting stuff on to the glued area and I asked what is was...151 proof alcohol....she said it works great and is less damaging that using acetone. You can google it for more information.

A squirt in your hair, a squirt in your mouth, a squirt in your hair, a squirt in your mouth and you should either have them out in no time :eyebrows:.

Good Luck!

With the glue they usually sell a special solvent to remove it. If you ask your teacher she will probobly have it or you could buy some at a hair salon. It sounds like they did it wrong since extentions are usually sewn in or glued to the scalp.

I've seen extensions fall out with chunks of hair attached to them at the glue tips. Root Hair? :( I think I'd try to remove them before any real damage is done. Good luck with it.

Too much of that squirting pattern and she'll end up squirting herself in the eye! :hooched:

Aww sweety! What if you keep slopping oil onto them , i mean its a way different scenario but i was painting with my friends and my friend was up on a ladder painting the ceiling , I was not paying attention and I got a big drop of paint on my head without even realizing! It was hard by the time I got home so I put olive oil all over it and let it sit over night , it slipped right off in the morning , now I am fully aware it will take a lot more oiling to get glue off but its worth a shot :-<

I have never heard of extensions being glued to the scalp. They aren't supposed to be. We do three types of extensions at my salons. The type where your own hair is braided into tracks and the extensions are sewn in, the type that are glued on in a long weft to your braided hair track ( not to your scalp ! ) and the kind that are attached small segments at a time with hot wax. The wax ones have to be loosened with pliers, just squeezed enough to loosen the bond and then the solution that breaks the wax down is applied. You continue gently squeezing with the pliers until the whole wax piece is loose and can slide out. It is messy and time consuming, but it works. You never want to try to remove them without the solution, it can result in hair loss and breakage. Atleast you don't have a whole head full !!!!

Eeesh. It does dry out nails rather severely, at least for me. Maybe non-acetone nail polish remover might work the same way?

Thank you very much everyone for your replies! Pliers didn't work really, I have nothing in my house that can help take them out, I got one out just by picking and pulling at the glue..but I also lost a small chunk of hair with it. I'm gonna have my teacher help me in class tomorrow.

I can hear the title of the day's class already..." Removing Extentions, 101"

They should, in my opinion, teach you how to take them out if they teach you how to put them in!

I'd suggest to maybe use oil, but not any kind of chemical that your teacher or another professional haircare stylist hasn't recommended. You'd hate to have more damage afterwards from using something to remove them that wasn't suppossed to be used on hair than having damage from the extensions themselves!

So just have fun with them today! Take some pics, and wait till tomorrow to tak them out.

As far as i know, oil can make extension glue wash out. When i had my extensions, the hairdresser strictly warned me about keeping my hair oil-free.

I realize you've probably gotten them out by now (lol) but nail polish remover, as bad as it sounds, was the only thing that ever worked for me to remove hair glue.
