I didn't want to believe it, but it's true: http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/ourcountry/32905/willie-nelson-cuts-off-his-braids/

Wasn't there a thread recently about how cool his long hair is (well, was I suppose) ....

One of the comments in that link says they hope he donated his braids to Locks of Love, so hopefully some old person undergoing chemo can enjoy them ....

Would be pretty cool I suppose :D

I liked his long hair, but if this makes him feel better then hey ho. Good luck to him :)

Yeah. It's a shame, but he can pretty much do whatever he wants. I think he's earned that. :D

I just read that online! Well, he cut his hair in the '80s too, and then just regrew it.

He really had awesome waist length hair. I guess it was just time for a change and maybe less of a long hair routine. I think he's amazing no matter what the length of his hair. :crush:

He could just have put on a wig then.

I am sad his braids are gone; they made his appearance unique.

Aw, I'm sad, his braids were amazing. I wish I hadn't seen the pictures, that little bob thing makes him look like a little girl :( He can totally do whatever he wants, though.

Well phooey! I hope someone in his family saved the braids. I saved the braid when my son had mid-back length hair cut short.

I was hoping they were going to put the braids up for auction! (I bet they'd sell for quite a lot).

I'm a bit sad he cut them. but hey, it's his hair to do whatever he wants with... (and yeah, he wouldn't listen to a crazy lady like me saying "Ooooh no!")

I just saw this bit of news light up facebook. (Granted, I'm in the South U.S.)
It gives me a sad. :(
It IS ironic that we were just talking about his awesome long hair.
Again, with the sad. :(

I also haz a sad. But I think the flip length he chose is flattering. I'd love it see it without the hat.

Unfortunatley, Willie's hair had to go in la garbage. You can't donate gray hair. Locks of love and any other hair wig company cannot use damaged, colored or gray hair. it has to be virgin due to the wig making process.

I guess after awhile, long hair is up-keep. I'm sure it's easier for him to manage this way. I'm sure he'll grow it long again too ;)

How odd! Well, I don't want to give them my gray hair anyway. So there!

As for Willie, I'm sad his long hair is gone. :(

I'll miss seeing his braids. I thought they rocked. I think the new cut is really dreadful. He looks like Karen the nosy neighbor on Desparate Housewives. That's NOT a compliment. I left a comment on Yahoo saying I hoped he wouldn't donate his hair to the LoL scam. I bet that will piss the do-gooders off  The good thing is a haircut won't affect his music.

Not exactly.

From Locks of Love FAQ (http://www.locksoflove.org/faq.html#Aa9):

Q. Can I donate gray hair?
A. Yes, we can accept donations of gray hair. Because we only provide hairpieces to children, we cannot use this hair in a hairpiece but will sell it to offset our manufacturing costs.

Q. Can I donate colored hair?
A. Yes, we can accept donations of colored hair.

Q. Can I donate permed hair?
A. Yes, we can accept donations of permed hair.

Q. Can I donate bleached hair?
A. No, we cannot use bleached hair. The bleach causes the hair to dissolve as it goes through the manufacturing process. Note: Many times highlights are done with bleach.

My hair dresser was the one who told me locks of love would not use gray, bleached or damaged hair--apparently all hair dressers get this big book from locks of love and other wig companies, so I was just repeating what she said.

Bottom line is that gray hair, sun damaged, bleached hair and colored won't hold up to the process of making wigs--it snaps. So, yes, they will take your hair and sell it, but I would think you could sell it and donate that money directly to your chairty of choice and you'll know the money is actually going to that charity, not the organization.

I think its good that he did that. He's had his signature waist length hair for years, change is very freeing to a person. I have a good feeling he'll grow it long again. Afterall it is just hair, and hair grows back. Nothing to get upset about :):blossom:

Aww man, thats a shame!
Did they really throw out his hair???
That seems such a waste, he could have auctioned off the braids and given the money to a charity. I would imagine that would bring in quite lot of cash. Man, If I owned one of Willie Nelson's braids people would begin to hate me because I would never stop talking about it!

May 27th, 2010, 03:27 PM
Willie Nelson can do whatever he damn well pleases with his hair, he's still an awesome musician. :rockerdud

Perhaps the heat in Hawaii was getting to him and he wanted a shorter style to stay cool. Or it could simply be that he felt like he's had his signature braids for so many decades now that it was time to let them go. He definitely looked to be all smiles when he had his picture taken of him with his new haircut, so if he's happy then I'm certainly happy for him. :)

I agree Eric, I am not so much sad that he cut his hair, but that is was a goner after that.
those are some very famous braids, that could have brought tons of money to a charity of his choice

ETA: My brother lives in Hawaii, I visited him and the heat is really real with long hair. Equator heat and humid. I put my hair up every day my two weeks there, and still with the hair up, it was a lot. It also bleached my hair to the extreme! I was growing out very dark blond/ brown roots, about 6 inches of them, two weeks in that sun, all 6 inches of roots were bleached to platinum from the sun. I was a little pissed off as I was trying to grow out my natural color and now I was back to no roots and back to Chicago . I would be an awsome natural blonde if I live in Hawaii.

Well, the L.o.L. website (http://www.locksoflove.org/faq.html#Aa9) itself says that they *can* accept colored and permed hair, but not bleached (and they sell gray that they receive).

Q. Can I donate gray hair?
A. Yes, we can accept donations of gray hair. Because we only provide hairpieces to children, we cannot use this hair in a hairpiece but will sell it to offset our manufacturing costs.

Q. Can I donate colored hair?

Q. Can I donate bleached hair?
A. No, we cannot use bleached hair.

I'm not trying to start a flame war here or anything, just pointing out that either your hairdresser or the L.o.L. website is wrong, because they're both saying opposite things.

I witnessed an acquaintance with several-times-dyed hair donate her hair at a very public L.o.L. donation event that was sponsored by a local salon, so I knew that they did, in fact, accepted colored hair. I was simply trying to clarify (LOL -- no pun intended ;)) the donation status of colored/permed hair (yes) compared to bleached/gray hair (no).

One of the comments in that link says they hope he donated his braids to Locks of Love, so hopefully some old person undergoing chemo can enjoy them ....
For good or bad, they make wigs for kids with alopecia or other permanent hairloss, though. Not generally to folks with cancer, except when the cancer is in the head or throat and the treatment permanently kills the follicles.

Now if LoL is smart, they've got his hair identified and will be auctioning it on eBay. His hair has to be worth a lot more than your standard gray braids, to someone out there. In that way, he'll be helping the organization and hopefully reduce the wig cost for kids, which appears to be the goal.

I know. I was only repeating what was written in one of the comments to the article because it was such a predictable response.
I don't think there's anything that says he's actually donated his hair for real (but then I haven't looked further than the linked article to be honest).
Still, if he has done so then that's his business of course.

I have just spent 20 minutes looking over the comments and I am absolutely gobsmacked at how pervasive the notion of Locks of Love actually is. My gods, at least one person commented about it on each page of the comments! I am shocked and a little suprised. These people must have an unbelievable PR department.

Almost all the comments said, "I hope he donated it to LoL to help the kids with Cancer." It is such a gross overstatement since the amount of wigs that go to cancer patients are nominal at best. It just shows how very uninformed the public is on this issue. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/fashion/06locks.html?_r=4&pagewanted=1&adxnnlx=1189688589-tkg5awRMcBm627D1VsotpQ

I actually worry about the pressure to donate for my middle school girls. :(

If Willie Nelson is happy with with haircut ... good for him! that's all that matters :D

If Willie Nelson wants to stuff the pillow on his couch with his hair and not donate it, it's his business also ! Who on earth am i to judge???????

Am I the hair police or something?

NO.

I remember watching Johny Carson years ago when Willie was on. He had just cut his hair and Johny talked about it with Willie. I remember Willie responding with something about "change".
Of course it was long again within a short time.

At age 77, Willie might not have ample time to regrow it. Plus, a lot of people's hair doesn't grow as fast when they are older.

This is just my humble opinion....I hope he decides to go one way or the other with his current "style". I hope he does let it grow a little, or just cut it a little shorter into some type of style.

Another slant on this whole thing...maybe this is a great move on his part to get free publicity. Maybe he has money issues again and he knew that cutting his hair would make the news.

Aw, boo. It's still long by most standards for a guy his age though, he'll probably grow it back out. I hope so anyway. I remember my sister being so upset when Metallica cut their hair back in the 90's. I was so young I didn't quite understand it though, I just have a very vivid memory of her being outraged and disappointed

I'm sorry I'm late to this thread but I have just known that Willie Nelson has no braids now. Three Months later...yeah. How many men wish to be in their 70's and still have hair left in their heads!

At first I tought It was a joke...official images prove it isn't so. Such a pitty.
