A couple of days ago I tried mixing molasses with my conditioner and left in on for an hour: washed it out and air dried (few drops of jojoba) and my usually dry hair is soo soft and Shiny!!! It also has a rich browner hue to it, especially in the sunlight. I think it definitely helps in terms of moisturizing!
Just wanted to share this positive experience! :)

I LOVE what molasses does for my hair too! The only problem I've had is that molasses turns any conditioner to very watery for me ... did this happen to you too?

Yes ladies, it was pretty watery for me too but I put my head in a plastic bag (lol) which prevented it from dripping too much. It was worth it! Maybe you could add more conditioner than molasses?

I like molasses too. I use it in the caramel treatment.

I did this too the other day! And yeah, it got totally watery. I did mix a fair bit of castor oil and almond oil to try to thicken it up, but I applied it hanging my head over the tub and scooping it onto my hair with my hands so it ran back down into the bowl I was using. Smelt horrid, but my hair was so nice and shiny and it did pull some highlights! :D

Did you use sulphured or non-sulphered molasses?

Yes, I like molasses on my hair and have had the watery experience
Yuk, messy!

I found that putting a tablespoon of molasses in a bowl and then adding the conditioner a little bit at a time until you get the right consistency. Mine looks like melted chocolate, so its not really thick but certainly more managable. I'm going to do one this evening and add a bit of henna paste.

Sounds good! Too bad I have no idea where to buy molasses in my country. I don't know if we even have it. There's some kind of treacle syrup which I think has molasses in it, could I use that?

Hmm Alwayssmiling, you made me wonder what actual melted dark chocolate would do to your hair  Not sure if I could ever try though, chocolate is for eating.

How much color do you get from molasses?

I'm a strawberry blonde with henna added, and I'm always looking for new food to put into my hair, but I don't want to end up with brown hair!

Sarahmoon, molasses is what we call "stroop". Only in the USA it's often made out of sugar cane and our's is made out of sugar beets. Same conditioning properties though.

i have experimented with molasses and conditioner. The molasses i use are made out of a plant called carob, and it's pretty thick and viscous. My mix does not turn runny. It has the prefect texture. The problem though is with the smell.

Glad to hear about people's results! I've been wanting to try it as a substitute for honey in my SMT, because no matter how long I heat the honey I always seem to get some lightening, which I don't want. Off to the kitchen...

I like using treacle. (I think it's the same as mollasses).

I am undecided as to whether it actually makes my hair softer and shinier, or if it's just the conditioner, but I love the way it makes my hair smell like toffee! It's worth it just for the smell. :D

I can't speak for the OP, but I never noticed any color change on my hennaed hair. I would either mix with conditioner for a modified SMT or add a little to my vinegar rinse. Gave me super soft and shiny hair.

I have never heard of using Molasses mixed with conditioner until now. The conditioner I use is mainly honey and I get a nice shine and softness from it, but I'm now thinking that Molasses would add even more shine and softness as it is stronger in colour and appearance than honey! Thank you so much for a great tip and I will be adding this to my shopping list! :)

This sounds so good for my hair but I'm really not sure I could deal with the smell! I can barely stand it when I'm baking, so I'm not too sure about leaving it on my head

how long does the darking proporities of the molassas to your hair last? i might like to give this a try

I don't think I got any darkening out of it when I tried it this weekend. I had it on for about 1.5 hours.

jasper

The darkening for me is pretty temporary. One (or two at the most) wash and it is gone.

I'm not big on using conditioner as conditioner, but has anyone used this mixture for CO washing? If so, how did it work out?

TIA!

I've done this with corn syrup as well as molasses, and cheap pancake syrup (not actual maple syrup, which is way too good for this sort of thing). As near as I can tell, one sugar syrup is as good as another for moisture/humectant properties, and corn syrup is both colorless and incredibly cheap. So it's a good way to go if you don't want darkening from molasses or lightening from honey. It gets runny for me, too.

I've used it as CO, and it works reasonably well. About the same as using SMT mix for CO. My hair's not particularly oily, though, and CO generally does a good job cleaning it without much soaking time. My only caution is that I've gotten sticky hair from too much honey in a mix once -- I don't know if this was a honey-specific thing or too much sticky syrup, but it keeps me from wanting to make the blend majority-sugar.

I mixed about a cup of black strap molasses with a couple of squirts of conditioner, smoothed it through my hair, added a few spritzes of water (to increase humidity) and put it in a plastic bag (that was the tricky bit). I left it for an hour, then washed it out, let it air dry until it was damp, then did a heavy oiling with coconut oil, braided itt, slept over night and washed out the coconut oil in the morning. - after air drying, my hair is lovely and soft and silky.

This is my logic for following the molasses treatment with coconut oil. Molasses is a humectant, so it attracts moisture (that's why I spritzed with water, before bagging my hair). Therefore, my hair should have been full of moisture after the molasses treatment. I am hoping the coating of oil sealed the moisture into my hair, whilst smoothing the cuticle and adding healthy shine.

It certainly feals good to me. I think I am going to add this to my routine, once a week!

Anyone else tried Molasses recently? I'm going to give it a shot on Sunday and let you know, but i'm trying to go no poo, or no product, and seeing if this can be a good alternative to conditioner. What else could i mix it with other than conditioner? Flax gel? Tea? Avo? *shrug*
I used to make honey masks weekly and that worked well for me, giving my highlights and softness, but i don't mind darker hair now.

Is everyone applying this on wet or dry hair? I always use dry hair to counter excessive runnyness in my conditioning treatments and henna if I've messed up and made it too liquid, or just want it easier to work through my hair. I also find on dry hair, it's much easier to make sure you haven't missed bits - they'll still be dry!

Ktani said something about it being too good a humectant that it could strip your hair of moisture.

When my coffee/conditioner/cocoa is too runny, I just add more cocoa powder to thicken it. I don't know how cocoa would chemically affect what you're trying to do, though.

Ok, i spritzed my hair and scalp with water and I've mixed some with Yogurt and put it on my scalp and some with whipped cream and put that on my ends ( past used by date but still smells ok but my family is iffy to eat it. It's what I had laying around) and massaged all the way through my hair. I rinsed it out with just water, i hope it doesn't go gross or oily :S Feels actually drier....i think i didn't wet my hair enough. I had remnant cocoa already in my hair (rice flour and cocoa diy dry shampoo). I can't wait for it to dry (so i can see how it turned out )

eta - i noticed less hairfall actually! And also my hair smells like cheescake due to dairy, vanilla shea, coconut oil and my lime and linseed acidifying rinse. Insane! *yum*

it feels different. The ends could use more moisture perhaps, it seems clean, it is coated in a fine layer of oil. My hair looks slightly greasy, but also somehow- not in a sticky gross way, more in a "i used too much leave on conditioner" way. My hair is so smooth, i actually love it .(my partline is strangly dry looking, the rest has a film???)

ETA - DONT do this if you are no poo....smelled BAD the next day and took nearly a week of non shampoo concoctions to get the smell out and had to wash all my brushes/combs twice!

I think molasses gave me light brown highlights. My hair is the darkest shade of brown and it had a red tint to it because I always finish my hair washes with acv. I tried a deep conditioning treatment by mixing molasses with conditioner and indian powdered herbs like amla. The mixture was really moisturizing and my hair likes it. It has been about a month and I probably used this molasses deep treatment five times. Sections of my hair are considerably light brown in indoor lighting. The problem is that I want jet-black hair and not brown hair. I still use acv just like I always do. It's either the molasses or the tea spritzes that I currently use that changed sections of my hair color to light brown.
