Gibson Tuck

I keep seeing this mentioned here. I did a search, and can't find any instructions. Please give instructions, and if you have any pictures, so much the better!

The Gibson Tuck used to be my favourite style when I had BSL hair. Now I cannot wait until my hair is long enough to do it again!

The link Miss Murphy has given you is a good one, but I think it doesn't mention one important thing: when you make the ponytail, make it a high one, about half-way up the back of your head, not at the nape of your neck. I would then pull the pony tail holder back a bit, making it looser.

Then I would divide the hair above the pony tail in two, and flipping the pony tail up, gently and evenly work it into the 'pocket' you have made. Be careful not to push the hair through so that it pokes out underneath. It might help to make the pony tail into a roll before you ease it into the pocket.

The other thing I did differently was to use a barrette to draw the two sides of hair above the ponytail together and hold the style firmly. It also helped hide the ponytail holder.

I hope that this helps and I'm sorry that I couldn't provide pictures. Just a quick question....whenever I do this style, I can never figure out what to do with the hair that goes into the "pocket", it just kinda sits there. Should it be rolled up or laid flat along the pocket? Mine falls through alot!

Don't make the pocket too shallow. And put the hair in folded horizontally so it doesn't fall through.

I know most instructions say to put your pony tail in the middle or higher on your head, but I really prefer putting it a bit lower. Also, you will still be able to do it when your hair gets longer; I was able to do it with hair at tail bone length. I can't speak for anything past that (here's to hoping that some day I will be able to do so!), especially if your hair is a lot thicker than mine, but you will be able to do it for a while yet.

In the below picture, I can't quite tell where I made the pony tail because of the angle, but I think I tend to make it at or just below my 'mid-ear-level' (if that makes sense), with about two inches of looseness before the ponytail holder. Divide your hair above the ponytail holder in half, on top. Then I roll the remaining hair around my hand to slip it in the pocket. Experiment with different clips and fastening methods to hold it... You can see pretty clearly how I hold it with a flexi8 below; I probably also caught some scalp hair in the middle there to better secure it.

Yes, thanks to all who posted info! I think I'll be able to do it now, after I wash my hair. I tried it last night, but my hair kind of clumps because I'm on day 5 of no wash. If I get it right I'll take a pic too. Thanks again!

By coincidence, I tried this again last night -- and it worked! (I haven't been able to do a Gibson Tuck since my hair was about armpit length... I just have too much hair and the tuck bulged out like a duck billed dinosaur's head.)

For me, what worked with longer hair was this:

-- Make the ponytail lower, so the tuck drapes more.
-- Leave some of the ends loose, so they curl over the elastic/join gap.
-- Hold it in place with a hairstick speared in from either side (each going through part of the elastic.
-- Tightly roll the ponytail before folding it in.
-- Do this with extra clean, curly hair. (My curls drop out after a day or so, and this doesn't work as well then.

After I roll up one side of the split ponytail, I anchor it with a hair scroo. The same with the other side of the ponytail. I had a lot of trouble keeping my hair in the pocket until I tried the scroos.

Then I stick a couple of the prongs of my decorative comb through the ponytail elastic. PeggyE. shared this tip with me because I couldn't find a way to make the heavy comb stay in the Gibson Tuck.

I've found a way to make this style work on long (tailbone-classic), medium thickness hair. It's pretty much the same as what everyone else is doing with a few caveats:

1. Make it low so you get something that droops more gracefully over your neck rather than a huge bulge sticking out the back of your head.
2. When you roll up the ponytail to put it in the pocket, don't twist it. Just roll, so that you end up with a nice roll of hair that you can spread to either side, like a fan, when you tuck it in.
3. Secure through the loop of hair on the inside - otherwise it will fall through. I use a Ficcare Maximas. I love my Ficcare. :inlove: (This may seem blindingly obvious, but when my hair was shorter, I used to wear this style without securing it.)
4. I have a lot of taper so if your hair is as long as mine without much taper, this may not work anyway.

Weirdly enough... my waist/hip long hair keeps better in a low Gibson tuck when I use a scrunchie instead of a regular elastic. Somehow, the scrunchie (hair colored and not too big) helps to keep the roll in place. I like to hold it with a flexi 8.

I did a really loose sloppy one once, with my shoulder length hair. I have pics in my album.

I did like everyone else said to do, low ponytail stuffed in. I just put in some pins and it loosely held but I only kept it in for a few hours. I think I'll try it again soon since I just watched Anne of Green Gables recently.... :)

:D Thanks! I think if you roll your hair first, then stuff it, it will turn out ok. Remember to do it loosely so you really get the Gibson girl look. It's even better if you have waves or curls in your hair.

I always thought the Gibson Girl look was higher on the head, kind of poofing out all around a bun. That is the look I would like to achieve (and have on occasion) but my hair is so thick that I have a hard time keeping it in a bun formation - it just springs out.

I will try this method with a high pony and see what happens.

I love this one because, unlike some other updos, it really looks good with my texture.

I essentially make the beginnings an inverted ponytail and then roll and tuck the tail into the formed pocket.

I second getting this book. It is wonderful!!!! The instructions and pictures are very helpful. Very easy to follow. I own this book and love it. The gibson tuck is one of my favorite styles. Can't wait till my hair is long enough again to do it.

Some updos just look bleh with curly hair, but this one works with it. I like it.
