I finally got this to work. It took me a few weeks to figure out.

Does anyone happen to know if people cosplay as Grand Duchess Anastasia? I'm just asking because people asked me for her 'do, not her sisters. Very specific. I thought it was interesting.

The style looks gorgeous! :D I will definately try it some time seeing as I have quite a few bobbie pins lying around that I have never put to good use.
It will be my first "real" updo attempt in a while.

I have a few questions though:
Do you know how long the final look lasts, generally? (Does it come down on its own easily or not?)
Also, does it "tug" at the scalp a lot? I have yet to find an updo that does not hurt my head; I'd love to find that something this attractive might not be as painful as the more "boring" buns I have tried. (I rarely wear my hair up for that reason.)

I notice that the sides tend to loosen over time, but I haven't had it fall out. If you use product in your hair, it would probably last longer. If you "x" the bobby pins, they'll stick better.

The back part stays firm, especially if you use Amish hair pins instead of bobby pins. Since the updo is really pretty loose, I haven't had any pulling or tugging on my scalp. Maybe someone with a more sensitive scalp could give it a try and report back?:eyebrows:

I'm totally trying this after my hair dries. Actually, now I'm wishing I'd seen this before washing so I could try it tomorrow morning with cooperative hair. :)

Oh, I love how you mention teasing out the pompadour, but then say very matter-of-factly, "I'm not doing that to my hair."

Glad you liked that. I try to figure out hair styles without using rats, teasing and product. I try to do styles that any woman would be able to do relatively easily.

It's styles that are more historical that are begging me to grow out my bangs! :justy: I don't think I could do this one and make it look authentic. Your hair looks lovely, even on 'wash day' :) Thanks for the video!

Actually, Grand Duchess Anastasia had bangs, so you'd be more authentic than me.:eyebrows:

I made a similar video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M77hqKdnQf8). :) Still have to redo it and move it to my hair youtube page. You have a good video too. :)

Love the Moonlight Sonata on...is that a harp? I didn't know you did hair tutorials, LittleOrca. I've seen some of your mermaid videos (which are beautiful, by the way.)

I looked up the Victorian pompadour on YouTube and couldn't find much. I guess I was searching for the wrong phrase.

Actually the music is not a harp, it's little hammers hitting stalactite in the Luray Caverns in Virginia and it makes music. :) I used to have more tutorials, but I moved them off the mermaid tail and harp site and over to it's own page. They are not very original, mostly basic ones, and I am going to redo them so they are not up yet, but my hair videos will be here: http://www.youtube.com/TheMermaidsHair

That's amazing! I've been to Luray Caverns (I'm from Virginia originally.)

Most of my tutorials are turning out to be interpretations of historical hair and movie hair. That wasn't planned, but people asked me for certain styles.

Do you count cornstarch as product?

I was thinking while I watched your video that if you brushed a bunch of cornstarch through wash-day hair (like some of us, me included, do to counter-act oily looking wash-day hair), it would make the pompadour part fuller. I know cornstarch on sebum-coated hair does tend to make it thicker/fuller looking in general. Of course, you'd have to brush it through really well so you didn't look like you were wearing a powdered wig or something...

Just a thought I had! Great video!

I don't generally have a problem with product; I just choose not to use it.

Cornstarch isn't a bad idea. I've been known to put Lush's dusting powder on my roots in a pinch when I couldn't wash. I just doubt most women would feel comfortable putting cornstarch in their hair.

I think I will put it in the information for those that want the volume without using product, if that's okay with you.:D

Thank you! :D I tried it out on Tuesday and it worked for me as well. It didn't tug at all and stayed up (for the most part) from 7 am to 5 pm when I got back home! The video helped a lot. I was in a hurry and used way too many bobby pins just to be safe, though. Next time I will take my time and think about the fact that I have to get out what I put in! :p

I love Anastasia, I love Victorians, I love pompadours, and I love your video! :cheese:

I'm not sure if my hair is too short and layered for this. But I'm going to try it out. To get me into that state of mind, I started out small - with my first successful Gibson tuck. :grnbiggri

As for people asking for her specifically... my guess would be that it's because she's always been the favourite child, both of the family and of the public. Her and poor, sick little Alexei. :o

Well, gave it a shot.

I was so worried about other things that I forgot about my HAIR PART OF DOOM. That thing can never go away. Ever.

So my first try was pretty awful. On the second try, I tried to work with the part by intentionally doing the poof sideways. Less poofy, but at least the part doesn't kill it as hard.

Here are a few more pictures. Hairpins ahoy! It's a total mess, but I do think that with some practice I could make it work.

I think it looks okay. Try pushing the pompadour forward more and work with your part. There are tons of pictures of Victorian pompadours that are parted. Your hair color is gorgeous!

Thank you. :) I also have to make the back part neater next time, heh. I'm not discouraged, it just takes some practice. Thanks for making the tutorial. :flower:

Maybe the part would calm down if I combed my hair backwards after washing and let it dry that way...! :hmm:

Don't stress too much about the back part. As you can see in the video, mine is all sorts of crooked. It doesn't show up in the final product.
