View Full Version : Going CO

Whenever I wash my hair, sometimes it feels soft and silky, and other times my scalp gets so oily that my bangs stick together, but the actual hair feels dry with oil coating it, if that makes sense. My scalp gets oily very fast, within about six hours of being washed, even if I use a sulfate and silicone free routine and use no conditioner above the ears. I've tried CO two or three times- once even adding a couple table spoons of olive oil to the conditioner, and my hair felt amazing- not dry, oily, or "gunky". I really want to try CO exclusively for a week and see if it makes a difference in oil production and the overall health of my hair, but I'm still in school and I'm afraid my hair will look "icky" in public :o. I also notice that my hair looks worse and more oily on the days I go to school, without any change in product or routine:confused: does anybody have any idea why this might be? What are your thoughts on CO? Does it work for you? Do you think it will work for me?

CO works amazing for me 8D
You could just try it in the weekend, and see how you like it. I think it will only improve your hair, though.
As for the school-grease (XD), I have something similar. When I'm a bit stressy and tired, I run my fingers through my hair a lot, subconsiously. And in classes I often get really tired and I sort of rest my head in my hands, making my hair warm, if that makes sense. Also, while concentrating, I play with my hair a lot, again subconsiously. Even the night before school, because I have to worry about getting my stuff ready and homework and setting the alarm.
Maybe that's your case as well? I could be wrong, but, you know.

I don't think the oil is from me touching it- I play with it and comb it more on the weekends and it still looks better with less oil. Maybe its a result from stress or lack of sleep?

As for trying it for the weekend, I have. I'm more worried about how my hair will look four to five days down the CO road (lol)- I'm worried about build up even if I don't use silicone

I think some people just have oilier scalps than others. Just like skin, some people have dry, some oily. Although I have heard that eventually hair can be "taught" not to produce so much oil overtime by consistently CO washing.
I have oily roots as well and one thing I would suggest if it is bothering you is to try dry shampoo. You can get a really cheap dry shampoo at any drug-store (Batiste is one brand that sprays on and only costs about $8 in Canada). You just spray it on your roots to keep them dry and it helps your hair look cleaner without showering. It might be worth purchasing! Another option is to get some baby powder, it works like dry shampoo but it's messier!

I currently do CO for the most part.... I do like it a lot, however, with my hairtype, I do find I need to clarify about every 6 wks..... trying it for a weekend may not give you an accurate feel for how it works for you. The longer that I have done it (almost 5 months), the longer I can go between washes and the 'oilies'.... I am a week between washes now (I do have to do a midweek bang/ fringe wash though).
I also find that by my weekly wash, my length is still fine, it is my scalp to earlobes that is ready for a wash.....

I tried some dry shampoo from Oscar Blandi and it didn't work at all :(. I want to try some spray dry shampoo, but most have really harsh alcohol in them and I don't want to put that in my hair. At least with my oily skin, I can just use some oil absorbing sheets- I have yet to find something that works like that with hair.

Just give it a go. The worst thing that could happen is you'd have to ponytail your hair for a day.
You can also wash your bangs in the sink with regular shampoo (an often utilized trick for oiliness) without messing with the rest of your hair.

I did find (both with my hair and skin) that the less harsh products I used on it (like CO and OCM), the less oil I eventually produced.
*** I think we double posted above

I definitely hope that COing will help stretch washed for me, I currently have to wash every day with a mild shampoo or my hair sticks together and is pretty much glued to my scalp.

I'm actually thinking about growing out my bangs because they always look so gross; they're side-swept and only my bangs look greasy. Its kind of weird.

Have you tried brushing with a BBB to distribute the oils? Since you have type 1 hair, this should be a great addition to your routine.
A BBB could also help clean and remove excess oil and keep your hair looking less oily, helping you stretch washes.

manderly: I recently discovered that my hair isn't type 1, with your help : P. I used a boar bristle brush, but all it does is make my hair look more oily- it does distribute, but it leaves my roots looking really sticky.

Ah! Time to change your profile ;) :p I couldn't remember your hair.
Anywhoozle, CO is definitely something worth trying in your case. It has helped people with oily scalps since overproduction of oil is usually because we overstrip, CO counters that.
There may be a short bit of time where your hair won't look it's greatest, but give it a chance. :)
If you really are worried about it, wait until you have a break from school to try it out, but I think you'd like it :)
In the meantime, I used to wash my bangs in the sink to keep them looking good since I don't wash my hair every day. You can do that for now to help you out.
Also, do you have toilet lid covers in your school bathrooms? Rub that on your head to help absorb excess oil. I use them as face blotters as well. Don't overdo it on your face or you can actually make you skin too dry!

I didn't know that those could absord oil O.O. haha, we don't have those anymore. I think maybe....I might just have to wait four weeks until school is out for the summer. I"m just so self conscious about my oily bangs. But I am excited to try something new.

Again, just wash your bangs in the sink and don't worry about the effect COing will have on them. It's moot.

I'll try that, definitely. :) I guess the only thing left for me to do is experiment with different conditioners and see which ones I like- I tried VO5 moisture milks in strawberries and cream and Garnier Fructis sleek conditioner, and both worked fine, but I liked the VO5 one better. Both are silicone free. I just need to figure it if it works long term as well as it does short-term!

Cone free ones like Suave and VO5 tend to work better for COing (buildup).
Let us know how it goes when you give it a go :)

About suave- are you sure they are silicone free? I have the coconut and strawberry "naturals" and both of them have ingredients that end in "none", which I've read are relatives to things ending in "cone"

The two "none" ingredients in Suave Coconut:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylchloroisothiazolinone
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylisothiazolinone
Both are preservatives. Suave and VO5 are well known for being cone free :) I use the Suave Coconut myself.

Alrighty : P just checking! Haha I'm being a bit of a freak about cone free products lately. I don't want my hair to rely on cones to look healthy : D

The loose dry shampoos never worked for me either. I tried one by Osis and it didn't do much. But, the spray kind has been awesome. Right now I use the Batiste brand. I'm not sure how damaging it is, I've never noticed anything and I only spray my roots lightly on the second day. If you can find it, it's worth a shot. You can even keep it in your bag at school to touch up during the day.

I would give CO a try :) It works really well for me. I haven't used shampoo in over a year now. If it doesn't work you can always try something else.
I am with Manderly on the Suave conditioners, I love them! I rotate through the Apple, Tangerine, Coconut and Strawberry. Mmm!
I also rub a bit of conditioner into my length after I rinse out the CO wash and leave it in. Makes my hair suuuper nice and soft and no frizzies.

I saw that at Ulta the other day! I put it back though, because of the alcohol and a couple ingredients that I wasn't sure about.

Amraann: The conditioner I mentioned used to have cones, but the formula has changed. I don't know where you live, but ingredients vary in common products in different countries.
