View Full Version : Question for curlies (curious)

A friend of mine has very nice (natural) spiral curls. Her hair is about shoulder length (unstretched) and she almost always wears it down. Once I saw she put her hair up with a clip, and when she took it down, the curls were gone, there were just some slight waves left. I asked her what happened to her curls, and she said they always disappear when she wears her hair up and the only way to get them back is to wash it again.
I wonder, do you curly people all have this problem?

Sometimes if I want my hair to be less curly i put it in a bun when its wet and let it down when it's almost dry....it still remains curly but not spiraly. if it's in a bun untill it's completely dry than the curls become much larger.

I've got wavy hair, not curly per se, and yes, my waves almost disappear when I wear my hair up (which is virtually always).

Being a wavy/curly my hair will loose some curl when I wear it up as well. I would need to remist and scrunch to get some wave/curl back.

Yep. If I wash and air dry, there are waves. Usually after wearing it up, though, the only "waves" present are actually just odd shapes created by the updo. Another wash = back to normal.

Yes same thing happens here.

Yeah, putting it up and binding it with something always pulls out the curl. It's the same thign that causes people with straight hair to have a wave where they put a hairtie, or bunwaves from a bun. Same principle, but since our hair already has a pattern going on, it disturbs it, and becomes 'straighter', or just plain screwed up in some cases.
When you wash, or just get it wet, it returns back to its former pattern.

Yes, especially since most updos require combing or brushing of some sort to get the hair to lay smooth. Take it down again and I usually get a massive frizz bomb, or some parts (the ones that were pulled back tightest) losing more curl than others. I prefer to wear my hair down, though.

I'm not exactly curly, only 2c/3a, but my hair is the same. I hate it in its natural shape. I comb it several times while it's drying to lose the curls. I usually braid it or put it in a bun after washing for half a day to get rid of my curls. After braiding I have nice braidwaves, after a cinnamon bun there are big waves in it. But after letting it down there are big curls in the ends an hour later.

I guess maybe that takes away some of the curls....but my hair is SO curly that I never really even notice. It calms it down some so it isn't as big...but it's still pretty curly for me. Now I guess that would be different if I put it up when it was wet, then maybe when it dried the curls would be much looser.

Yeah, especially if I braid it. I get braid waves and curls! They look dreadful together in my hair. I usually put my hair up when its wet, which stops it curling and just lets it get either braid waves or bun curls.

yep, especially if I bun/braid while it's damp (and I only style my hair damp). it just dries stretched.

It's not a problem- it's actually quite pratical. When I want strong curls (spiral) I let my hair down, when I want just a bit of waves I put it up ;)

yes definitely i get this. i think it's because curly hair is elastic. when i comb it it loses the curls and becomes slightly wavy, and when i roll it it gets wurly and takes the shape of the rolls straight away, and then when i wash it the curls form again.

Yes, this happens to me all the time. If I comb my hair and put it up after washing i end up with waves, but if i leave it down without putting it up it gets really curly.

Yep. Though washing isn't necessary for my curls to come back, water is. So I sometimes wet my hair down to bring them back.

I'm not a curly (wishful thinking!! I love curls :) ) but, when I curl my hair and put it up after, the curl goes away almost instantly. Then again, the curl would have been gone after a day or two anyways :o
That being said, if I put my hair up when it's in its normal, straight state, my hair gets much wavier.

I have wavy, almost curly hair, and if I keep my hair in a bun for a day it's almost straight by the time I take it down.
Then I wash and it's back to wavy again!

Yup, happens to me. On top of that, if I don't use gel my curls fall out on me MUCH easier :)

Putting my hair up definitely takes away my curls. I end up with wavy hair when I let it down.

For me it really depends on how I put my hair up too. If I put it up loosely and pin without coiling it much it holds it's curl a lot more. If I were to brush it to put it up when curly (which I usually don't) it would definitely take a lot of curl out. I would imagine it has to do with how tight the curl pattern is as well.

Interesting. I would have expected the curls to be slightly "undone" after an updo, but I thought they would return after a while.
My hair is straight and when I braid it, it becomes wavy. If I leave it loose for hours after that though, it becomes straighter again. I wonder why curls need water to get their original shape back.

I wonder about that too -- though I can attest from my own experience that it's true. My hair isn't dry, but water or moisture of any kind, including humidity or ocean air, will curl my hair in a flash. Does anyone know the science behind this?

I'm curly wash day, wavy second day and almost completely straight by the third day. Then it starts all over again.

^ That's what mine does as well. I've tried to "pineapple" my curls at night to retain them (loosely put all hair on top of the head with a scrunchy before bed), but it only ends up becoming a mess so I don't bother.

Re: curls coming back, they don't really (unless you're in a very humid place). My experience with my hair has been that it tends to hold styles pretty well - if I straighten, it becomes flat and limp, if I curl it, it holds those curls, if I style it with its natural curl, it retains that. So putting it up to stretch the curls out will stretch them out, though it also usually creates a lot of frizz, since it breaks up the pretty clumped-together curls. It's not as bad as brushing curls out, but depending on how you put it up, it's close.
But as curlsgirl said, it depends on how you put it up. I'll often do a sort of peacock twist on the bottom half of my hair and just let the top half sit on top, if I want to get my hair off of my neck - that pulls the bottom layer out a bit, but it leaves the top layer curly. Or if I twist it up with the curl pattern, it doesn't pull the curls out as much. But a pony tail? Forget about it :)

Yes my curls disappear whenever I put my hair up..all of the wave at the top also goes. The only way I get it back is by washing it or, if it's not a wash day, I spritz it with some water and Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner, scrunch, and go.

Yes, this does happen to me, but I do not consider it a problem but rather my hair is versatile. The pulling on the hair from updos stretches out my curls. I still have them on the ends, but the length looks wavier after. If this happens and I do want curls without washing, I just wet my hair with a spray bottle. My curls love moisture.

Yeah, my curl pattern is really really finicky, and sometimes even if I do something weird while washing my curls will go away. I don't really mind though, if I really want my curls back I can spritz with my mister and add a bit of gel. Besides, I wear it up almost all the time, so it doesn't bother me. :)

I'm curly wash day, wavy second day and almost completely straight by the third day. Then it starts all over again.
This is me in the winter -- I'm 3a-ish if I wash, scrunch and air dry; Day 2 I'm very wavy and Day 3 loose waves. I usually wear it up Day 2 and 3 as a result, esp. since the waves go wonky during the night despite pineappling and a satin pillowcase.
In the summer I usually water-wash and condition every day because I'm out running, biking or swimming most days. Plus it is always way curlier when it's humid out. So I don't know how long curls would last in the summer in between washing/wetting my hair.
If I put my hair up it doesn't get actually straight but it will have loose waves when I take it down rather than tighter waves and the odd spiral here and there.

Funny how everybody's hair reacts in different ways.
My hair is kind of curly ( but no spirals at all) It's frizzy
It doesnt matter how or for how long or when i put it up ..... it always ends up ugly and strange after .... that's why this "putting hair up business" doesn't work for me, on the contrary it gives me more problems!
I guess ... my hair has a mind of its own.

I think it depends on how tight and coarse the curl pattern. I find looser curls and finer hair will tend to lose curl more easily that tightly wound coarse curls...I know my own hair which is on the finer side will lose curls by the second day although it's never become straight. :)

I was surprised the other day when my hair still had a lot of the curls after having been up for about ten hours, because in the past that wouldn't have been the case. I think the "Curly Girl" method was a contributing factor -- my curls are better moisturized, so they were able to hold their pattern better.

What is "pineappling"?
Oh and sorry for calling it a "problem". Just I think I would be annoyed if I had those nice spiral curls and they would disappear whenever I would do something else with my hair than leaving it down ;)

Oh, don't be sorry I was talking about my own experience. Since my layers are mostly grown out, they aren't that bothersome to me anymore. :)

Pineappling is when you pull all of your head into a loose ponytail on top of your head, fastened with a scrunchie.
The idea is that by making the ponytail loose, it won't pull out your curls from your roots. Using a scrunchie instead of a regular elastic reduces tension in any one spot, reducing unwanted "rubber band lines". And having the ponytail on top of your head means that you won't be lying on your curls all night while you sleep.
I think the concept works better for "wavies" than "curlies". It's a very rare day when my curls don't get frizzed up and I can get "second-day-hair". I just CO-wash and condition every day in my daily shower, so I always have first-day-hair.

I can't make my hair totally straight however wearing it up while it drys turns the curls into big waves.

Us curlies are used to dealing with them. It just takes time and patience.

Definitely. Air-dried, my hair is really nice and curly, but as soon as I braid it, bun it, or do anything else to it (which is pretty much every single day, since I can't go around with a hair that has a mind of its own getting on the way), it loses the curls and becomes wavy and frizzy. That's why I usually CO every day, because my hair will hold the pattern of whatever updo I've put it up in until washed.
(on the fun side, I can get perfect ringlets, from my crown to my hip, just by wetting my hair, and curling it around my fingers a couple of times until it dries, without any sort of leave-ins or anything... it holds the pattern really well. Or put it in ten or so little braids and not have to tie them off, they hold by themselves... so it's not all bad, I guess.)
