Seen in yesterday's Independent obituaries:

The American mezzo-soprano Blanche Thebom was not only a fine singer with a lovely voice, she was also a very beautiful woman with a superb figure and amazing hair that, when let down, hung well below her knees.

Wow, beautiful hair! Usually, what we see in old Wagner productions are wigs, and they look pretty much like that... I've always whished the beautiful manes we see on opera stage were real hair, and she is a wonderful example of this! :)

I was very sad to read this news. Over the years I've collected Blanche THebom memorabilia such as recordings, photographs , autographs, etc. Every generation seems to throw up a long hiar icon such as her and Crystal Gayle. Miss Thebom must have been such an icon durung the 1950's. From what I've read about her, she was a true artist and thoroughly aware of how she felt her long hiar was of importance to her self and to those who admired her.

Thanks for the reply , Chris. I've been coming here off and on for quite a few years now. I've got the original of this pic along with the press relesae. It's from 1951 when Miss Thebom was appearing in "Fledermaus" with the Met. Apparently she was playing Prince Orlofsky. To get round the problem of hiding her hair she had a pouch sewn into the collar of her coat. The pic is of her applying a moustache etc for her part.
Drop me a pm sometime being a fellow Brit.
