Given that I have sharp scissors, does it matter whether to cut straight across a hair? Or, say, 45-degree angle works better for preventing future splits?

You should do a straight-across cut (90-degree angle); that is best for preventing future splits.

I do the same as Spidermom. Straight across is supposed to be the best way.

What they said. A 45 degree angle would expose too much of the cortex and medulla layers of the hair strand and lead to more splits.

In the past, I've had a hair literally split right before my eyes when I trimmed it off on a 45-degree angle. Granted, it was already bleach damaged (at-home highlights :p ), but I second (fourth?) the 90-degree angle.
