Hi there,
I have about hip length hair, which is pretty straight (type 1b/1c) , and lately I've had the extreme urge to cut layers in it.
I currently have a blunt, straight across cut.
I've had long hair for a about 8 years now, keeping it at hip length (if its longer I sit on it, and I dislike that) and 99.9 % of the time I just wear it loose.

Now my problem is, I haven't been to a hairdresser in these 8 years either, and before I just randomly go over to an unknown hairdresser and shout "cut some layers in it!" I'd like to find pictures of people with long hair and layers.

I've been googleing for pictures for a long time now but all I find are pictures of people who don't have long hair (shoulder "flippy" length), pictures of people with lots of layered curls, or if I finally do find a picture of someone with actual long hair with some layers in it they're standing in front of a wind machine, so you still can't see how it was cut.

After a while of searching, I found this forum and I thought, what better place to ask then here? Surely some of you must have a layered cut, or at least one that is growing out? Or maybe some of you have some favorite pictures of someone else with a layered cut?

I look forward to seeing any pictures, thank you in advance!

I see you haven't received any replies yet, but I'm going to subscribe to this thread just in case. I'd love to figure out how to get some long layers.

I wonder if you would have better results posting this in the Mane forum. :hmm:

And yes, I take my son to the hair salon. As I wait for him, I always flip through the 'long' hair style books. It's all shoulder length! Very frustrating.

I hope you can find something helpful in there.

I cut back to BSL fairly recently and got some layers cut in, too. They're starting to loose their definition, though. I haven't taken any pictures yet, either!

ETA: As for what I did, I went to the hairdresser, showed her where I wanted the ends of the longest part of my hair to be, and showed her where I wanted the ends of the shortest layer to be. It was just at the university hairdresser, not a fancy-pants salon, so she was more than happy to just do what I asked for. ^__^

Welcome!

Finding photos is going to be tough because not many ladies grow their hair to tailbone! I think what would suit it best is to have the shortest layers at waist, and a couple of layers in between. So in hairdresser language, you want about 3 or 4 long layers starting 6 inches up (or however high you want.). I would reiterate that you want to keep your overall length the same so the layers need to be light. Also, you may want to ask for a V or U shaped hemline, as this will look better than a blunt hem with layers.

Google-fu:

She's about waist but see how the layers start about 6 inches up? There's a couple around her face as well.

She's got some subtle layers as well

Shorter piecey layers around the face.

You get the drift.

I cut my hair myself and cutting layers really isn't too hard... I pull the top layer of hair (from the back of my crown) in front of my face so I can see it and trim a couple of inches off, then lay it back into place and check it in the mirror. With trial and error and cutting only the smallest amount at a time and point cut (http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=point+cutting&meta=&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=) to make them look softer.

Hope this helps you! :D

This is the photo I brought to my hair dresser and my hair is a little past BSL.
You could tell them to start the layers at the APL if you don't want them too short.
My shortest layers, other than the bangs, start at the shoulders.

I was also considering these

Is the OP able to see the posts? The person only has made one post on this forum, so it might be difficult.
